EP:174 In this episode, I'm finally taking you behind the scenes of my Hashimoto's journey—from being told I was “in remission” to hitting a full-blown flare that looked a lot like grief, burnout, and perimenopause all rolled into one. I'll walk you through the timeline of my diagnosis, the scary symptoms (brain fog, hair loss, fatigue, joint pain, irregular cycles, sudden weight loss), and how I slowly realized this wasn't “just stress” or “just motherhood”… it was my thyroid and my nervous system screaming for help. I'm sharing exactly what I tried, what I quit, and what I still use today: low-dose naltrexone, why I chose not to start thyroid meds (for now), getting my IUD removed, my experience with functional and holistic doctors, parasite cleanses, Candida protocols, coffee enemas (spoiler: hard pass), and the vitamins, supplements, and Standard Process cleanse that actually help me feel human again. Most importantly, I'll talk about how learning to read my own body—my flares, fatigue, mood, sleep, and stress—has turned me into my own best advocate, not a passive patient waiting for someone else to “fix” me. This anchoring practice is about creating a daily habit of tuning into your nervous system with curiosity.A few years ago, one of my mentors shared something that has stayed with me. You don't want to attune to your nervous system only when life gets hard or everything feels like it's falling apart. You want nervous system hygiene. A daily relationship. A practice of checking in before you're overwhelmed, reactive, or exhausted. So that when life does get hard, you don't find yourself upside down and completely shaken.Because this is how we change generational patterns.Not in the hot moments of crisis.Crisis will happen. Life will inevitably get hard but this is not the time to try to figure out your nervous system. You don't learn how to anchor a boat for the first time in the middle of a storm. When you've practiced anchoring in calm waters, you intuitively know how to respond when things get rough.It's pretty easy to move through life when things are going well. When our health feels stable, our kids are okay, our relationships feel calm, and life isn't asking too much of us.Our strength isn't tested when life is easy. It's tested when something feels uncertain. When a symptom shows up. When a child is struggling. When we're exhausted, overwhelmed, or carrying more than we know what to do with.And in those moments, most of us instinctively look outward for support. For answers. For something to fix or soothe what we're feeling.But one of the most powerful shifts we can make is realizing that the greatest support isn't external. It's internal.It's the relationship you have with your own body. It's whether you know how to check in. It's whether you can notice what's happening inside of you before you're pushed into reaction.This is what we are doing in this practice.Just learning how to be with yourself, consistently, so that when life gets hard, you know how to loving sit with yourself and respond with confidence instead of reacting with fear.This practice is about connecting your own dots and getting curious about how your system speaks.Thanks for listening! One great-grandmother was the local healer in her small rural community. When the Spanish Flu erupted, she used an elixir of elderberries and alcohol to treat 20 community members who fell ill with that dread disease. Not a single patient died. Lynn reports that no one in her extended family fell ill from that disease, and attributes their resistance to the nightly dose of elderberry elixir for all family members, which was a family ritual. Dr. Lafferty is an endowed professor at Nova Southeastern University, teaching pharmacy and medical students. She attributes her career choice to influences from her grandmothers, who inspired her direction in life. The life lessons she learned also drove her to seek rational solutions to the SARS-CoV-2 virus when it broke out, causing COVID in 2020. Challenges in Medical Education Dr Lafferty highlighted her concerns about the lack of education on essential nutrients and the influence of hospital protocols over resident physicians. She described a concerning mindset among psychiatry residents who expressed fear of harming patients with prescribed drugs, despite their extensive training and financial investment.
