Please listen with care.Host Lira Ndifon opens this powerful episode with an urgent and heartfelt call for awareness, shedding light on the political violence, military brutality, and internet shutdowns currently happening in her home country of Cameroon. From this space of global empathy, Lira sits down with Alicia Rupin, a first-generation American and successful floral designer, for one of the most personal conversations on the podcast to date. Alicia shares the raw and vulnerable story of the tragedy that reshaped her entire life: the loss of her beloved uncle to suicide. This is a must-listen masterclass in navigating profound grief, especially when it's shrouded in the silence and stigma that often surround suicide in many cultures.Alicia gets radically honest about the "what ifs" and the guilt that haunted her family, and the unique, personal coping mechanisms she used to heal—including keeping her uncle's phone number active for two years just so she could continue to text him. She offers a perspective that will change the way you think about loss, defining grief as "love that just has nowhere to go".This episode is a tender and powerful guide for anyone who has ever felt lost in their grief. You will discover:The Truth About Grief: How to understand your grief as a form of deep love and why you must "ride the wave" instead of running from it.Healing When There Are No Answers: A raw look at the complex emotions that follow a suicide and how to process them without shame. From Pain to Purpose: How Alicia channeled her depression and grief into her floral business, turning her uncle's motto—"It's cool to be kind"—into her brand's identity.Unique Coping Mechanisms: The power of finding your own way to heal, even if it seems unconventional to others (like texting a loved one who has passed). This conversation is a beautiful reminder that you are not alone in your struggle, that healing is not linear, and that our deepest pain can often be the source of our greatest purpose. If this episode touched your heart, please share it with someone who might be navigating their own waves of grief. This week, Jake and Bob welcome Dr. Shane Owens to explore how desire, the heart, and theology work together for our good, through the lens of St. Augustine's Confessions. Dr. Owens breaks down St. Augustine's healing journey and how by understanding the desires motivating our actions, we are led into deeper communion with God. They also discuss how memories shape our view of reality, why we distrust a good God, and what the Scriptures teach us about our identity. Key Points: Our desires ultimately point us towards God Sin is a result of misdirecting our desires towards something that is not God. It is an attempt to counterfeit the beautiful Memory is dynamic, not static, and returning to our heart to examine our memories plays an important role in forming our identity and facilitating healing. St. Augustine's willingness to be vulnerable in his "Confessions" is a model for vulnerability and understanding our desires. Scripture helps us recognize true beauty and reveals our true identity There will always be a tension between our desires and satisfying those desires. Healing and maturation occurs when we listen to our desires but wait for true fulfillment in God rather than settling for counterfeits. We talk about the endless noise out there—how easy it is to chase the next fix—and why the real work often looks less like control and more like compassion. Today, I interview Heidi Fischbach who grew up in a strict, high-control environment where fear and rules shaped how she learned to speak and exist. From an early age, she carried the weight of right and wrong, heaven and hell, and learned to stay small to stay safe.As she grew older, this constant vigilance became anxiety and self-silencing. Her turning point came when she began to understand how the body holds old fear-based patterns, and how healing the nervous system can restore a sense of safety and calm. Through curiosity and self-friendliness, she learned that safety isn't just emotional, it's physical, and that when the body feels safe, the voice naturally begins to emerge.Today, Heidi helps others reset their nervous systems and rediscover what it feels like to be calm, connected, and expressive. She teaches that healing happens in small, steady increments, not through force, but through gentleness and presence.__________________Heidi Fischbach is a nervous system coach and writer who helps people reset after high-control environments, whether that's a fundamentalist religion, a rigid family system, or chronic survival mode.
