In her book, Lisa shares personal stories, with a fair share of humor, to reveal how the Holy Spirit has shown her that following Jesus should cause her to become more like him. Its pages theologically support this revelation and explain why studying the Scriptures should make us all more like Jesus. Along the way, Lisa shares fascinating, and perhaps surprising context behind the terminology "Word of God," why it's important to remember that the Bible isn't part of the Trinity, and what believers miss out on by not maintaining a truly restful posture with their maker.  On this Episode: Dr. Lisa Harper /  Instagram / Book / Podcast / WebsiteLynne Stroy, host / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / Instagram Luke Gaikwad, host / Instagram Bri McCleod, host / Instagram Producer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn VandiverWe have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. With the ugly, green guy as the backdrop of the conversation, Josh and Joey discuss the beauty behind the gift of salvation, how most people have "some grinch" in them, and how hurtful people have typically been hurt in their past. The two also talk faith and grief, as Josh's family is experiencing their first Christmas without a particular loved one. He and Joey wrap up their conversation by offering encouragement to those who are grieving and offer advice heading into the holidays.  At the top of the episode, the host crew discusses the various remakes of "Grinch Movies" and reminisce on Christmases past.  Be a Patron of the Podcast!  / extended audio commercial Other Past Christmas Episodes:Santa Claus and Other LiesThis Christmas, Rejoice With Those Who RejoiceChristmas Episodes on Grief:This Holiday, Mourn with those Who MournThis Holiday, Mourn with those Who Mourn II"Oh Holy Night (LIVE)" by Seacoast MusicIn this episodeJosh Walters / InstagramRoy Jacques, host / FacebookTomelex Copeland, host / FacebookLynne Stroy, host / InstagramJoey Svendsen, host / InstagramJack Hoey, host / InstagramAmy Worley, host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, including theme song: Joel T. The topics of predestination and free will have been debated for centuries. On this week's episode, we'll hear from individuals with varying opinions on these complex topics. Bible scholar, writer, and podcaster, Chris Date believes in the theology of Calvinism (term often used synonymously for predestination) and sees one's salvation as something that God predetermined and that only individuals whom God chose will live with him for eternity. Chris and Joey Svendsen are joined by Pastor Chip Judd to discuss this belief. Chris and Chip also share sharp opinions on whether a person's actions or choices are authored by God and if he controls the outcome. At top of the episode, Tomelex Copeland, Roy Jacques, Lynne Stroy and Joey have their own discussion on predestination and they revisit a conversation from an earlier episode and assess whether it's possible for a person to remain quiet in a stressful, high pressure situation.Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page  In this episodeChris Date / Facebook / Website Chip Judd / Instagram / PodcastRoy Jacques, host / FacebookTomelex Copeland, host / FacebookLynne Stroy, host / InstagramJoey Svendsen, host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, including theme song: Joel T. In a pre-MP3 and CD era, vinyl full-albums abounded in Christian bookstores and at local record stores. It's 1986, and today's guest, Michael Sweet, and his band Stryper ("by His stripes, you are healed.." Isaiah 53:5) just released their album To Hell With the Devil. It's about to sell millions in both Christian and secular markets, with its songs all over the radio, and music videos on MTV. Host, Joey Svendsen was in the 4th grade, but found that Stryper album at Family Christian Bookstore and it turned his life upside-down, resulting in music exploration being a full-blown hobby.Stryper was no different than the other "metal band greats," like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and Poison. From impeccable songwriting to catchy melodies and shredding guitars, Stryper was on top of their game. The things that separated them from the rest was their motivation to spread the gospel of Jesus and their song lyrics that matched that passion.Joey talks to Michael Sweet about the early days of Stryper, the hair and make-up culture of the 80s metal scene, and why Michael had to walk away to get healthy and prioritize God and family. Throughout the episode, Joey highlights some of his favorite Stryper songs as listeners are treated to audio clips of them all.At top of the episode, Abbie Love, Joey, Tomelex and Jack Hoey III talk pointless homework assignments and spiritual warfare in context of the Surratt's wreck discussed in episode 112. Pastor Adam Martin makes his first appearance on the Seacoast Podcast, it's been long overdue. He delivered a sermon four days ago on Sunday (August 25th), "God Help Me With My Faith."  On this bonus episode, he's in studio with Jack Hoey III (Creative Director, Pastor, host of show), Joey Svendsen (host of the show, Pastor) and Geoff Reppard (Pastor of Seacoast Small Groups, also first time on the podcast) to talk faith, doubt, certainty and disbelief.  Other questions are discussed: Has western Christianity taken the "personal relationship" component of faith too far and perhaps have not enough emphasis on the beauty and truth of "the Faith" being originally birthed into "the church" (a group of people) and never starting with "one person having his or her own personal faith?"  If painful seasons are "building blocks" of faith, are they also good? Does God give these seasons as gifts?  Pastor Adam explains the important distinction between "God causing" and "God ordaining," especially in regards to growth from suffering.  Lastly, the four reflect on the importance of experiencing God through the Holy Spirit while also discussing how an overemphasis on "personal feeling" and a zealous drive for experiences can both be counterproductive or even harmful to one's faith. The guys today can't answer emphatically on a lot of these questions, but they can ponder on it all and certainly give their best guesses; after many years of seeking God, a lot of invested prayer (Adam more than others, very likely. holier, tad older), and a lot of scripture reading. Certainly each having his own experiences with past seasons of doubt and unbelief and now each in a season of peace and belief in the core essentials of the Gospel.    Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page I YouTubeOn this EpisodeAdam Martin / InstagramGeoff Rappard / Facebook Jack Hoey III / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editors: Joey SvendsenSound Engineers/Editor: JT Price and Katelyn Vandivertheme song: Joel T. Joey presents a couple of jokes he saw on instagram, one was a story by a comedian about a family member with down syndrome, the other was a black male mocking the voices and facial expressions of white college, female students. Can comedy go too far?  Is every topic fair game to laugh at?  Is there a "right way" to make fun of anything?  Recently on a text feed amongst the podcast host team, Amy thought Hayne made a "fat joke" about her and even though he didn't, Amy shares why she wouldn't have objected.  Get The B-Sides Feed  Facebook Discussion Group here.E-mail the PWNA team here.Theme Song, other Music by Stoy Prioleau (aka: Riggy Roc): Apple MusicOther music: Mechanical River, Derek Minor. Nick and Rich bring to the table helpful insight on finances from a wealth of knowledge and from extensive professional experience and personal practice.  Most importantly they demonstrate lives of astute personal financial stewardship with "living out the gospel" being the goal (i.e. increasing generosity is the goal). [This episode is produced by Hayne Griffen and hosted by Joey Svendsen, Hayne Griffen, Robbie Madison, and Matt Oxley]Robbie became a father [thrice] recently and the four reflect on parenting in the context of faith, Joey sharing seasons in which he didn't have the tools to guide his kids spiritually, given his own confusion and angst about the deeper things, at those points in his life.  Joey also processes out loud a situation in which an adult with leadership position over one of his kids crossed major lines and asks his co-hosts for feedback on how he handled the situation.  Peer mentoring in high gear!  The three also talk appropriateness in regards to joking about some one's gayness, they offer Robbie moral support for his upcoming vasectomy and share what they believe to be backwards, the emphasis Christians put on a "sinners' prayer," when simultaneously putting very little focus on whether one has any fruit from living a gospel-centered life. Seacoast Church was started in 1988 by Pastor Greg and Debbie Surratt who moved from Illinois to Charleston, SC in 1987 with their four kids, Jason, Josh, Jessica, and Jenny. Early on, their family endured life-threatening hardship—two of the kids surviving a massive car wreck and their oldest daughter, Jessica, surviving an extremely close-call in a jet ski accident. On this episode, Pastor Greg, Pastor Josh Surratt, and Jenny Mayer (the youngest of the bunch) sit down with host, Joey Svendsen to discuss those dark times, including the narratives of those dreadful accidents. They reflect on God's goodness shown through church community and ponder these early seasons in the context of spiritual warfare and God's sustenance. The three also treat the listenership to some fun stories with  hilarious insight on the Surratt family, back in the old days when our Lead Pastor, Josh Surratt, still got spankings. [This episode is produced by Stoy Prioleau and hosted by Joey Svendsen, Amy Alderman, Ellen Mauro, Liz Miller]Birthed out of the discussion in "episode 36: generation z people, trans people and those gay olympic ceremonies,"  in this episode, Joey shares how he posted some sentiments on that archaic social networking platform, Facebook, fairly certain the straight-forwardness of its message to fellow Christians in regards to Jesus' radical message of love.  Numerous comments on the post however highlighted some very different takes on how a Christ-follower is to reflect the gospel.  Joey, Amy, Liz and Ellen talk about here what seems to be two very opposing views amongst Christians about what "Christ's love" for the world should look like amongst the body of believers.  As the four discuss, it seems that certain actions and words the hosts see as "peeing on the gospel" of radical love, many other christians see as "taking stands" for what is good and right.  Joey's Facebook post reflected on the outrage by many christians  on the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics. He expressed the potential delight it would be to see all Christians truly serving and loving how he personally believes Jesus is calling all Christians to love.  It says the following: "I've made some of the biggest screw ups of all, so I totally understand the whole “he who is without sin cast the first stone” concept and how it plays out here.  But man, it's so hard to see the church miss the mark on the very basics of the Christian faith.  TBH, I think it's debatable whether this is Christian persecution in the first place, but wouldn't it be so refreshing to see brothers & sisters all over the world actually loving their neighbors & not having such a short fuse with stuff that rubs them the wrong way?  Is it fear?  Have we not been perfected by love? HAHA, let's bring those WWJD bracelets back."Get The B-Sides Feed  Facebook Discussion Group here.E-mail the PWNA team here.Theme Song, other Music by Stoy Prioleau (aka: Riggy Rock): Apple MusicOther music: Mechanical River.Send a text to the crew (we may read these on air)Host and producer, Joey Svendsen also hosts and produces two other podcasts, coming more from the church world:Seacoast Church's Things You Won't Hear on Sunday Podcast &The Endurance Factor Podcast Other podcasts affiliated with co-hosts of PWNA:Jed's Church & Other DrugsMatt's The Great Deconstruction
