[This episode originally aired on August 20th of 2024][Watch this on YouTube]Seacoast Church was started in 1988 by Pastor Greg and Debbie Surratt who moved from Illinois to Charleston, SC in 1987 with their four kids, Jason, Josh, Jessica, and Jenny. Early on, their family endured life-threatening hardship—two of the kids surviving a massive car wreck and their oldest daughter, Jessica, surviving an extremely close-call in a jet ski accident. On this episode, Pastor Greg, Pastor Josh Surratt, and Jenny Mayer (the youngest of the bunch) sit down with host, Joey Svendsen to discuss those dark times, including the narratives of those dreadful accidents. They reflect on God's goodness shown through church community and ponder these early seasons in the context of spiritual warfare and God's sustenance. The three also treat the listenership to some fun stories with  hilarious insight on the Surratt family, back in the old days when our Lead Pastor, Josh Surratt, still got spankings. On this EpisodeJenny Mayer / Instagram Greg Surratt / Instagram Josh Surratt / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramSeacoast Podcast is now on InstagramBe a Patron of the podcast We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. We'd love to hear from you.  E-mail Joey HERE. Producer/Editor/host: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn Vandiver

Andrew Schwab, lead singer of the metal band, Project 86, joins the host crew to talk about the first installment of his fictional novel series. The novels tell a futuristic story from a Christian perspective of what a future could look like when you combine flawed humanity with the intoxication of technological advancement. With his book as the context, Andrew joins Adam Erickson, Jack Hoey, and Joey Svendsen to ponder just how likely Andrew's story points to the reality that humanity is heading toward. At the top of the episode, the host crew argues about corn (yeah the food), discusses their own comfort levels with A.I., and Joey asks what may be his biggest blunder of a question to date.About the novel, OMNI: A global technocracy, has risen to unite humanity under one government, social media network, and commerce system. Their applications, released to the public to combat a series of international crises, transform daily life in dramatic fashion. In celebration of their latest application called the AUGMENT, many millions gather at a massive music festival called OMNIFEST. The company marketing describes it as “the most significant innovation in all recorded history.” Although the specific details surrounding the app are murky, it is rumored to extend human lifespans. The hype is enormous. David Markham, an influencer for OMNI Social Media, is commissioned to document the festival on an official livestream for the state. It is his “big break,” his first opportunity to host content on a worldwide stage. As the festival proceeds, he learns the dark truth about the company he serves, the tech he worships, the people he trusts, and ultimately, himself. OMNI, the debut novel from Andrew Schwab, is a mind-bending journey through a plausible near-future scenario, one where the singularity is only inches away. It explores our relationship with metaphysics, AI, media, and one another in the emerging transhumanistic order. It also examines an existential dilemma which all of us may soon face: What would you sacrifice in order to cheat mortality? How would you respond if you no longer feared death? Andrew Schwab | Instagram | Website Hosts  Tomelex Copeland | Adam Erickson | Jack Hoey III | Brianna Mcleod | Lynne Stroy | Joey Svendsen Seacoast Podcast is now onInstagramBe a Patron of the podcast We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. We'd love to hear from you.  E-mail Joey HERE. Producer/Editor/host: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn Vandiver

Artificial Intelligence isn't going anywhere—and it may prove to be more transformative than any invention in human history. At the same time, the Church isn't going anywhere either. Over the last century of rapid technological change, it has continually adapted and even expanded its ability to spread the gospel of love. So, what happens when these two forces collide? With AI now capable of processing and synthesizing information at a level far beyond any individual, this episode explores how it should—and should not—be used in ministry. Specifically, we dig into its role in Bible study, prayer, and biblical counsel. On this episode, biblical scholar, Marc Turnage, joins the podcast to unpack this concept with Jack Hoey, Lynne Story, and Joey Svendsen. Marc focuses especially on the benefits of AI—particularly how it can deepen our understanding of Scripture, which is what his new app, Ask Ezra, has great potential for.  DOWNLOAD: Ask Ezra: Your AI Bible Tutor  On this Episode | Marc Turnage | Jack Hoey III | Lynne Stroy | Joey SvendsenSeacoast Podcast is now on InstagramBe a Patron of the podcast We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. We'd love to hear from you.  E-mail Joey HERE. Producer/Editor/host: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn Vandiver

Do Christians have a responsibility to serve their neighbors? The verse Jeremiah 29:7 calls God's people to seek the peace and prosperity of the city—to pray for it, to care about it, and to invest in it.  To live this out, Seacoast launched "Love Where You Live” in March to create intentionality around serving people in our communities. It isn't a one-time event, but rather an initiative to create a culture around loving the people in the communities where God has placed us. Listeners will hear from Local Missions Pastor, Jen Cameron, and three Seacoasters who share their stories about how they've made "loving where they live" a lifestyle. With Jack Hoey, Lynne Stroy, Josh Walters, and Joey Svendsen, this episode dissects what serving can look like and explores why it's not really a choice for those who follow Jesus. In this Episode:Nikie Johnson | Facebook | North Charleston Seacoast Dream CenterMegan Masters | Instagram | The Navigation CenterAmy and Joe Welch | Instagram | Welch Community HopeHosts: Jen Cameron | Jack Hoey | Lynne Stroy | Joey Svendsen | Josh Walters To find a community partner or Seacoast Local Missions Ministry you can serve with, check out www.seacoast.org/localmissions and choose your campus. Seacoast Podcast is now on InstagramBe a Patron of the podcast We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. We'd love to hear from you.  E-mail Joey HERE. Producer/Editor/host: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn Vandiver

Jill also names the parts of deep grief that really can't be understood unless you've lived through it.At the top of the episode, the hosts take a moment to talk through the old “Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays” culture wars, process the brokenness and beauty of our world, and hear Luke share what Christmas looks like for Christians in India. It's a tender, honest, and hopeful conversation — one that sits right in the middle of both ache and celebration, much like the season itself. On this episode: Jill ForbesHosts: Lynne Stroy, Joey Svendsen, Luke Gaikwad, Roy Jacques "What Child is This," by Seacoast Music. We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. [The episode has three friends in it: Joey Svendsen, Amy Alderman, and Hayne Griffin and Stoy Prioleau]Joey stands up for himself when a peer calls him a "fake pastor" for not having time to engage in a conversation, uncharacteristically responding to this guy with a bit of abrasiveness.  Joey ponders with his friends whether the confrontation  was necessary, helpful or good.  Amy, Hayne, Stoy and Joey discuss confronting others as well as their personal comfort levels with times when it's necessary for them to do the confronting.  When close relationships go awry, Joey articulates why solidarity and support from others feels like a need. Amy shares why she believes some people are garbage and are deserving of being ghosted, Hayne processes confrontations the same way he processes mowing the lawn, and Stoy recounts a lesson that stuck with him, when he learned to listen more and speak less.  E-mail Joey here.Support Joey's work by Being a Patron / (Venmo)Check out Joey's Substack.Theme Song by Stoy Prioleau (aka: Riggy Roc): Apple MusicE-mail Joey here. Pastor Naeem Fazal, Lead Pastor at Mosaic Church and author of his second book, Tomorrow Needs You, joins hosts Roy Jacques, Abbie Love, and Joey Svendsen to talk about the book and a little about his time as a former pastor at Seacoast Church.  In Tomorrow Needs You, Naeem accounts for his own pain, as well as the pain he has seen others walk through recently—some from senseless tragedy. Naeem empathizes with anyone who doubts whether the world is better tomorrow and encourages us all with the truth—tomorrow needs each one of us. Naeem reminds us to slow down and recognize the beauty in humanity and that we all have a purpose. With deep conversation and lots of laughs, the four discuss being free from fear, if safety is something God promises, how treating God as a transactional "genie" leads to religion, and what's at stake if God doesn't redeem all things. Be a Patron of the podcastOn this Episode: Naeem Fazal / Instagram / BookRoy Jacques, host / FB Abbie Love, host / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / Instagram Producer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn VandiverWe have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. In her book, Lisa shares personal stories, with a fair share of humor, to reveal how the Holy Spirit has shown her that following Jesus should cause her to become more like him. Its pages theologically support this revelation and explain why studying the Scriptures should make us all more like Jesus. Along the way, Lisa shares fascinating, and perhaps surprising context behind the terminology "Word of God," why it's important to remember that the Bible isn't part of the Trinity, and what believers miss out on by not maintaining a truly restful posture with their maker.  On this Episode: Dr. Lisa Harper /  Instagram / Book / Podcast / WebsiteLynne Stroy, host / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / Instagram Luke Gaikwad, host / Instagram Bri McCleod, host / Instagram Producer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: Katelyn VandiverWe have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024.
