Today we discuss the decline in Home Economic type classes in schools, and the benefit they have on our kids. I'm sure some form of life skills are taught, but from what we can tell, these classes aren't offered as often any more. Why not? Unless we're taking the time to teach our kids how to cook, change tires, balance a budget, and just basic life skills at home, school is the next best place. As we discuss in the episode, make it a compulsory class for everyone to take and make it well rounded for everyone to enjoy it. When we think "Home Ec." our minds go to a room full of girls learning to cook muffins while mending aprons, but it doesn't have to be like that. If your school still offers these classes, that's awesome, if it doesn't, what are your thoughts? Would your child benefit from a life skills type class...maybe call it somethings like "Life Skills Sciences" to make it more generic. Let us know what you think and if you had classes like this in school. Find us on Facebook and Instagram, or email us at momvoicepod@gmail.com. Our mom this week is the amazing CINDY WALSH from the iconic 90s teen drama, Beverly Hills 90210.

This week, I catch up with rural mum Cindy Walsh. Just weeks before her son Thomas was born, she was told he had just a 2% chance of survival. After countless tests and thousands of kilometres of travel from their farm, at four months of age, he was finally diagnosed with an extremely rare disease called Hypophosphatasia (HPP), otherwise known as 'soft bones'. But thanks to a miracle treatment, Cindy's little boy not only survived, but has thrived. This is her story.SPONSOR: Possums & Co., founded by Dr Pamela Douglas has been awarded funding through the Australian Government's Perinatal Mental Health and Wellbeing Program. Carol Potter steps Behind The Rope. Cindy Walsh from the beloved and iconic Beverly Hills, 90210. We start at the beginning chatting about how Carol was cast, the buzz around town about Aaron Spelling's new teen drama, and just what life was like in the early days when all of its cast were virtual unknowns. Life was anything but stellar. We chat about the show premiered to blah ratings and how that one unprecedented decision to air new “Beverly Beach” episodes over the summer changed everything. Carol discusses what it was like when the relatively unknown cast skyrocketed to fame of epic proportions and answers all out nuanced questions about Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Luke Perry, Jason Priestley, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering. We talk about all the buzzed about topics from back in the day - Tori auditioning under a fake name, Shannen Doherty's bad behavior, Shannen and Jennie's physical altercation and Shannen's cutting of her hair, despite warnings, which ultimately led to her firing. Carol recounts stories from the tension on set caused by Shannen and what is was like once she was replaced by Tiffani Thiessen who was then dating Brian Austin Green. We also discuss Oscar winner Hillary Swank's role, how and why she was fired, and all our other favs Vanessa Marcil, Christine Elise, Kathleen Robertson, and Lindsay Price, to name a few. We pay homage to the reboot (AnnaLynne McCord shout out) before discussing what it is like to receive a call regarding the BH90210 Tori/Jennie produced “heightened version”of themselves show, to see the gang again and why she thinks it was so short lived and didn't resonate with audiences. That heightened version of herself included played a “therapist” since, well, she is a licensed therapist in real life. On that note, Carol chats about her new book “When Your Child has a Chronic Medical Illness”, the untimely passing of Luke Perry, Shannen Doherty's unfortunate battle with cancer, and what is next for the actress who was part of one of the most groundbreaking, revolutionary, classic, iconic, life changing shows in history.@carolpotter90210@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by BETTER HELP - https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope (10% Off First Month - Use Code "velvet rope")Brought to you by BOLL & BRANCH - https://www.bollandbranch.com (15% Off First Set of Sheets - Use Code “Velvet”) Merch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Best known for her work as Cindy Walsh in Beverly Hills 90210, Carol has been a working actress for close to 40 years. In 2001 she also became a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and recently co-wrote a book with Dr. Frank Sileo which has been published by the American Psychological Association for parents of children with chronic medical illness. A charming interview, and a wonderful quote on parenting: "The only power we have is influence... and our influence is only as strong as the strength of our relationship" (with our children). According to studies, if automatic braking systems were installed in every vehicle, the number of rear-end crashes would likely be cut in half… which is one major factor behind the decision by dozens of automakers to agree to put automatic braking systems in each of their new cars by year 2022. Within three years of the standard, the IIHS says the systems will prevent an estimated 28,000 crashes – which is great, right? Well, as we move towards this established feature there are some people out there who have some reservations about automatic braking. In fact, the NHTSA is investigating a claim by one woman that her 2018 Nissan Rogue inexplicably slammed on the brakes while she was driving down the highway at 55 mph – coming to a complete stop. Cindy Walsh says the Rogue’s automatic braking has engaged two other times. When she has taken it to the dealership, they said it worked. She told CBS News that’s she’s now too scared to even drive it anymore. NHTSA’s investigation will cover the 2017 and 2018 Rogue after some 850 complaints of false activation of the SUV’s automatic braking – the results of which have reportedly been 14 crashes and five injuries. Jason Levine of the Center for Auto Safety also told CBS that people were beginning to turn the system off, which added to the incentive for these agencies to resolve the matter and “move towards a recall very quickly.”A recent study by the IIHS says the systems are safe, but “there is definitely room for improvement.” Outside of any potential issues with the Rogue, there have been seven recalls relating to automatic braking systems in the past three years. The “phantom braking” problem in the Rogue could add more than a half million to that list.
