This week we are talking with Andrea and David Peet. Before receiving a death sentence of ALS at 33, Andrea was living a normal life: urban planner, triathlete, and wife hoping to start a family with her beloved husband, David. In four months, she went from completing a half Ironman to walking with a cane. Like a true athlete, she decided to do one final race before her body failed her—an extraordinary experience that convinced Andrea she could create something positive from her journey. After five years with ALS, Andrea embarked on the craziest goal she could imagine: become the first person with ALS to complete a marathon in all 50 US states. Andrea and David created the Team Drea Foundation, raising more than $1 million for ALS research and inspiring over 400 people to take on challenges they did not think possible. With co-author Meredith Atwood, Andrea's memoir, Hope Fights Back, was released in Fall 2023 by Pegasus Books. David Peet's life was turned upside down in 2014 when his wife Andrea was diagnosed with ALS and given only 2-5 years to live. At the time, they were living in Washington, DC and David was working long hours as a young attorney in a highly-regarded law firm. Andrea's diagnosis changed everything. “I stopped thinking in terms of five- and ten-year plans,” David explains, “I want to make all of her goals and dreams come true, and I want to be there every step of the way.”  Today, David works full-time as an attorney for a software company while also serving as Chairman of the Board of The Team Drea Foundation. Foundation: teamdrea.orgDocumentary "Go On, Be Brave": goonbebravefilm.comBook "Hope Fights Back": https://www.simonandschuster.com/book...The Co-Movement Gym Podcast is supported by Native Path Supplements, Lombardi Chiropractic, Home Sweet Home Cleaning and Thin Line Martial Arts. Here I chat with a young woman living with ALS, who defies all odds by finishing fifty marathons and, in turn, inspires people to “go on, be brave.” I'm absolutely thrilled to catch up with Andrea Lytle Peet again and meet Meredith Atwood in this chat.  Andrea and Meredith coauthor Andrea's new memoir titled, "Hope Fights Back."  Andrea was thirty-three years old—newly married and a triathlete—when she received the death sentence of an ALS diagnosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). After grappling with the fact that she will likely become paralyzed and die within two to five years, Andrea experienced an unexpected spark that changes her outlook in the most magnificent way.  She set a goal to  become the first person with ALS to complete 50 marathons in 50 states.  In May 2022, she accomplished this goal with the 50th race in Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  Andrea shares her journey in a recently released documentary,  "Go On Be Brave: The Drea Story."  Now, she's publishing a book on 9/5/23 "Hope Fights Back."  In this episode we catch up on it all, especially her inspiring memoir.  Hope Fights Back chronicles what happens when we choose to live instead of waiting to die. It is a "love letter to life" and a beautiful love story between Andrea and her husband, Dave.  Andrea's message is awe-inspiring for everyone.  Listen in and share this incredible story with a friend.  Hugs, LorriFollow:  https://bit.ly/ImDyingToTellYouInstagram  Visit: http://goonbebravefilm.com/

By 2013, Andrea Peet had run a marathon and done nine triathlons, including a 70.3-mile half IRONMAN. In 8 months, she went from the strongest she'd ever been to walking with a cane – as she was diagnosed with ALS in May 2014, at 33 years old. ALS is a debilitating disease for which there is no treatment or cure. Andrea realized that if there was something she wanted to accomplish, the time was now.  Andrea Peet's journey began in 2016 at the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, Va., though most of her races were completed in the last three years. Along the way, Peet has raised over $850,000 for the Team Drea Foundation, an organization she co-founded in 2016 that supports ALS research efforts. Andrea most recently achieved her goal of running a marathon in all 50 states.  Listen in to Andrea and Meredith as they take you through her incredible journey on Find Your Finish Line.  Follow Andrea: Website: https://www.teamdrea.org/about/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teamdreafoundation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/teamdreafoundation/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TeamDreaFdn

Laila Tarraf was the Chief People Officer for Peet's Coffee and Tea, the iconic Berkeley coffee roaster that launched the craft coffee movement in America, but she had a secret: she was failing in the most important relationships in her life. Yes, she was a strong and effective business leader, the successful daughter of immigrants, and the mother of a toddler, but she was disconnected from her own feelings and had little patience for the feelings of others. All that changed when life handed her a trifecta of losses: her husband died of an accidental drug overdose, and her parents' deaths followed in quick succession. Laila had spent her life leading from the head, convinced that any display of vulnerability would make her soft. And it did, but soft turned out to be strong. As she reconnected to her heart, one painful step at a time, something remarkable happened: she became a better leader, a better mother, and a better person. Her heart turned out to be the true source of her power, at home and at work. Strong Like Water is a book about healing, about waking up, about learning who you are -- who you really, truly are at the core -- and reclaiming and embracing all the pieces of yourself you had long abandoned in the name of survival. For women longing for balance, this is a path to opening our hearts and infusing our leadership and relationships with love, compassion, and authenticity. The amazing Kevin Curry of "Fit Men Cook."  He says: "I think we’ve all been there. My “ah-ha” moment happened when I saw a photo of myself on my friend’s Facebook page.  My initial reaction was a mixture of denial, surprise and quite truthfully, a little shame for letting myself go as much as I had.  I was overweight and felt sluggish, and to compound the issue, my physician told me my blood pressure was steadily rising. So, I did what most people try to do— I started exercising to try to “out train” a poor diet. "I was wrong.  There was not enough cardio or weights in the world that could get this fat off my back. I realized that if I was going to accomplish my fitness goals, it would have to be through a steady, healthy diet, complemented by hard work in the gym. "So, I went to a half price book store, bought every single book about dieting and started studying nutrition.  Shortly after, I got started cooking.  I did not have much money so I started experimenting in the kitchen with different proteins and veggies in order to make simple, relatively inexpensive items, taste great.  I vowed that I would never eat another boiled chicken breast again unless I had to! "Fitness is a lifelong journey and I could not imagine a life of eating boring, bland food just to be healthy.  Now more than ever, I firmly believe that healthier food options do not have to be boring. Ever. In fact, they are pretty tasty.  And even better, the lifestyle changed worked. As I saw my physique begin to change, I was motivated to push harder and set more aggressive goals.  Not only did I learn how to lose weight, but also I learned how to gain muscle, with small tweaks in both my diet and training."   Follow Kevin Website: https://fitmencook.com/ Instagram: https://instagram.com/fitmencook Twitter: https://twitter.com/fitmencook  Buy The Spices https://www.amazon.com/fitmencook Buy the Book https://fitmencook.com/cookbook ======================  Request to Join the FREE Meredith Atwood Community & Coaching https://meredith-atwood-coaching.mn.co/ ======================  Buy Meredith’s Books: The Year of No Nonsense https://amzn.to/3su5qWp Triathlon for the Every Woman: https://amzn.to/3nOkjiH =======================   Follow Meredith Atwood & The Podcast on Social: Web: http://www.swimbikemom.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/swimbikemom   =======================  Want to Connect?  Email: same24hourspodcast@gmail.com =======================  Credits: Host & Production: Meredith Atwood Copyright 2017-2020, 2021 All Rights Reserved, Meredith Atwood, LLC

Britt Frank is a therapist, teacher, speaker, and trauma specialist who is committed to dismantling the mental health myths that keep us feeling STUCK and SICK. Her work focuses on empowering people to understand the inner mechanisms of their brains and bodies and how they connect. When we know how things work, the capacity for CHOICE is restored and life can and does change.  Plain and simple: Britt is the therapist we all wish we had. And we could have her! You can work with her through her business - the Greenhouse in Kansas City, or thx to a pandemic, anywhere virtually. I was introduced to her by my friend and previous guest Meredith Atwood of the Same 24 Hours Podcast. Be sure to get over to Instagram and follow her right now @brittfrank. Today I took the liberty to have a personal therapy session that I think you'll both enjoy and relate to the various angles. On that note, get ready for a good one. It's time to get Britt on the show. Notables from our conversation: Trauma definition: "There are Big T and Little T traumas. We all have trauma. It just depends on what degree." Sexual abuse: Communication is the key to helping stop or identify abuse when it is happening The Fuckery of Life: I just like this concept :) Guilt is actually important Stages of grief were actually designed for people who were dying. Britt uses the "4 tasks of grief." "The opposite of trauma is choice." "The Road to Happy starts with neutrality." Guilt is a gift. Shame is "I am bad." Guilt is "I did something bad." The floating head: The feeling of being disconnected from your body. The goal is to find happiness in our bodies. Start by assuming you're not crazy. The word perfect is a beast! I was just thinking of this episode the other day, and realized... this was a GREAT one. So I wanted to make sure we hit a replay of it! In case you missed, here we go! Family doctor and expert, Dr. William Sears, is the co-author of the book : The Healthy Brain Book. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five U.S. adults will experience mental illness in their lifetime, and most end up paying more for treatment than they would for physical health conditions. While this is an alarming truth, family Doctor William Sears and neurologist Vincent F. Fortanasce - have positive news: it’s possible to treat and even prevent the onset of mental illness with the right medication or even WITHOUT medication at all, ultimately leading to a better quality of life. In their groundbreaking new book, The Healthy Brain Book, Sears and Fortanasce team up to bring readers an all-ages guide to having a calmer, happier, sharper brain, whether experiencing “normal” mental and emotional burnout or wrestling with diagnosed illness. In the Healthy Brain Book, the authors explain that while the brain is a complex organ, the diverse set of mental and emotional challenges we have stem from one cause: imbalance in the brain. The Healthy Brain Book will help those struggling to thrive and get their brain back in balance by teaching readers the following: What we think can change how well we think The role of inflammation in the brain, and how food and activity can reverse it What drugs can enhance or suppress the brain’s ability to heal itself Actionable advice to improve your memory, promote learning, and prevent common brain ailments How to personalize the book’s tools for your unique brain Buy The Healthy Brain Book: https://amzn.to/2VEJ32b  Website: https://www.askdrsears.com/  What you will learn: [3:45] What keeps an author motivated to write more than 40 books? Meredith Atwood is a speaker, writer, coach, podcaster & more. Her work is about empowering women to change their lives and reach their goals.  But what she's currently making waves about is not the work she does with other women, but the work she has recently had done on her own body.  After years of frustration with the loose skin on her belly (she calls it the "apron") due to childbearing and weight loss, she decided to have a procedure that included both a "tummy tuck" and ab muscle repair to bring her abs muscles back together. Her goals were not to look hot, although she admits this is a great side effect, but to kick some ass on the weightlifting stage.  In true Meredith Atwood form, she has been open, vulnerable and honest about her journey. We decided it would be a perfect time to get her on the show to talk about our changing bodies, our rights to make our own decisions about our bodies, and how to deal with other people's opinions about our own decisions.  You will learn about the actual process that Meredith went through, but more than that, this episode is about the ultimate goal we all hope to achieve someday: Love and acceptance of our own bodies - however we need to get there.  Takeaways:  1) Meredith Atwood is awesome and we're so happy to know her! 2) You CAN change your life, step by step, just keep showing up. Keep following a path even if you don't know what it is and look inside at what is happening in there. What are you covering up? Keep trying to solve that little by little.  3) The minute you say, "I have got this," you need to turn around and dig back in because the universe is going to show you that you don't. 4) When you realize something is taking up too much negative headspace, that is the moment it is time to make a change. Garrain dealt with homelessness for 2 ½ years, living out of his car and feeling like he was drowning in misery, as well as being sent to prison for 2 ½ years. Yet, going through both of those difficulties, and more, he found a way to turn his life around. Garrain’s story is a perfect example of how you can go through so many difficult things in life, but that it doesn’t mean you’ll never find success. In a place of difficulty, Garrain developed the strength to rescue himself.    Health and fitness play such a big role in his life because he grew up thinking success was in material things. It wasn’t until he got healthy that he started to feel different. Once he started to feel different he then started to think, speak, and act differently. His actions changed based on how he was feeling. “You can only reach a certain level of happiness when you’re not healthy.  There’s no way you can be happy if your heart isn’t healthy!” 6 ½ years after being homeless, Garrain is now a serial entrepreneur who motivates and inspires thousands. The knowledge he gained while being shaped and molded sent him down the pathway to become a Transformation Coach. I never listened to my intuition. I did what I was expected to do. I made other people proud. That was how I lived my life. -Meredith Atwood Meredith Atwood remembers working very hard to get into law school, knowing all the while that being a lawyer was not what she was meant to do with her life. She did it anyway. The years flew by, she married her college sweetheart, had babies, and was making lots of money as an attorney, but somewhere deep down inside, Meredith had lost her way. One morning, after drinking too much wine and binging on pizza and ice cream, the triathlete just couldn't get out of bed. She didn't even remember the promise she had made to her daughter to help with a project before school. Instead, she pulled the covers over her head and slept through the entire morning. When she woke up, she found a note from her husband with four powerful words on it: GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER. Says Meredith: “When you are in a state of emotional despair, you are not living your authentic life. You are sick.” And so began an open, painfully honest 365 day experiment which is now the title of her book: The Year of No Nonsense: How to get over yourself and on with your life.” Published by Hatchette Books, it reads like a journal and is both heartbreaking and hysterically funny, all at the same time. Determined to figure out what was working in her life and what wasn't, Meredith gave up both her legal career and drinking wine, and set about the task of adjusting her compass. The result is a book that resonates for any woman who has also lost her way. In this candid interview, Meredith shares her belief that we all suffer losses throughout our lives, but “getting over the past requires seeing it, acknowledging it, and then saying to yourself: hey, I can do nothing about that. I only have today, so let's get on with it.” For 23 minutes of truth and wisdom, just hit that download button. #yearofnononsense #storybehindhersuccess #triathletes
