"The decisions you're making now, in four, eight or 12 years' time people are going to be benefiting or suffering from - and it won't be you," says Conor O'Shea. "You have to make the right decisions for you now, for the future, rather than the right decisions for you now, selfishly." The Director of Performance Rugby at the Rugby Football Union [RFU] is talking about the organisation's efforts to mitigate the disruption caused by the pandemic at levels of the game. It was just one of the topics on the agenda as the Irishman caught up with co-hosts Matthew Stone, Leaders’ Senior Product Manager, and sports psychologist and consultant Michael Caulfield, whose clients include Brentford FC, Northampton Saints RFC and Hampshire CCC. Also up for discussion were: - The communication and provisions around player welfare [8:30]; - How coaches and staff will evolve as the game develops [12:00]; - Setting out the most efficient way to operate in the next phase the return to play [17:30]; - The head coach of the future [23:30]. In this episode we discuss: - leadership and followership Why genuinely caring for your people can increase their motivation and get the most out of them? - get your team to come up with the values so that they take ownership of them - respect differing views of other people and acknowledge those - why do leaders need to be brutally honest? - first impressions are powerful and a compliment can get someone on board straight away - you must be willing to support your people as they go through challenges to improve - leaders lead by example - getting to the stage where everyone knows their role that they need very little guidance or assistance - getting your leaders to set an example with their work ethic, desire to constantly improve and promoting/reinforcing that - are your leaders' actions infectious? - how to deliver ‘brutal' news in an emotionally intelligent way? - importance of everyone knowing their role - control the controllable

Conor O'Shea is a Personal Trainer, Nutrition coach, and Yoga teacher from Ireland, currently based in Melbourne, Australia. Conor is also a certified GMB trainer - which is one aspect of his work which particularly interested us. GMB is a training method that incorporates yoga, martial arts, physiotherapy, gymnastics and mindful movement. As we will hear in the podcast Rane has a personal interest in this methodology! In this conversation, we learn how Conor discovered yoga, and how a trip to India changed his perspective on movement, physical exercise, meditation and life. We hear about his approach to nutrition and coaching, and how he cultivates positive habits in his clients, helping them build an awareness of where they might be at a particular point in time. This leads into his personal philosophy on living a happy and healthy life, and he shares some wisdom he learned on his life journey. This is another fascinating episode, and we just love Conor and his laidback, realistic and holistic style of yoga, movement and nutrition.
