In this episode of The Birdshot Podcast, host Nick Larson sits down with Todd Bumgardner, founder of Pack Mule Training Co., for a deep dive into physical preparation for the uplands. They discuss the shift from extreme "murder yourself" workouts to a philosophy of long-term consistency, focusing on how small, frictionless habits can pay massive dividends come September. Todd brings nearly 20 years of experience training hunters and elite military units to help upland hunters move better, stay resilient, and extend their longevity in the field. I've been following these principles for three years now, and the biggest change for me wasn't some fancy new gear—it was realizing that consistency is the most important variable. I used to tolerate sore shoulders and heavy legs during those first few grouse hunts, but by keeping a simple routine and rucking year-round, those opening-day miles now feel like a breeze. Todd and I dig into the "why" behind Zone 2 cardio, the efficiency of the 20% body weight ruck, and how to outsmart your own willpower by making your training environment frictionless. Expect to Learn: Why consistency over a long period is the ultimate driver for progress in the field. The "environmental design" trick of putting your gear in your way to reduce startup friction. How to use the 3-mile rucking assessment to establish your baseline aerobic fitness. Why Zone 2 training acts as your "recovery system" for handling back-to-back hunting days. The technical benefits of the Zercher squat for hunters looking to protect their spine while building strength. A simple one-minute mobility routine you can do every morning while your coffee is brewing. And we give a bit of a nuanced take on this subject (to try and balance out a lot of the exaggeration that is seen online with this subject). Inside, we answer the questions: Is rucking an effective way to build muscle strength? Is rucking useful for improving or maintaining bone density? Can rucking help with weight loss? Is rucking beneficial for the immune system? Can rucking help with longevity? == Want to get fit, strong and resilient for your hiking adventures? The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this episode, I sit down with Terrence Ogden, founder of Official Project Grit — a man who transformed a life of addiction, jail time, and rock bottom into one of the most inspiring stories of resilience, grit, and faith you'll ever hear. We start with the Immortal 32 Ruck — a 75-mile road march from Gonzales, Texas to the Alamo, now in its seventh year, inspired by the 32 men who answered the call at the Alamo knowing it was a one-way ticket. But what makes Terrence's story so gripping is where he came from. Years as a severe heroin addict, cycling in and out of jail, until a mentor named Kenny Baker reached out a hand and changed everything. That spirit of one man helping another became the DNA of Project Grit. We also get into Terrence's most extraordinary feat: a solo, self-supported 1,046-mile ruck across the entire state of Texas — 40 days, no crew, with food caches buried in the desert weeks in advance. He shares what it taught him about faith, discipline, and a peace found not in the absence of chaos, but in the presence of God within it. We close with a powerful call to any man carrying something heavy in silence. Terrence's message is simple: we are tribal by nature, and you will never find your true purpose until you're willing to ask another man for help. Timeline Summary [0:00] Introduction to the Dad Edge mission and the movement to raise leaders of families and communities [1:01] Introducing Terrence Ogden — founder of Official Project Grit and one of the toughest non-veterans you'll ever meet [1:46] The Immortal 32 Ruck: a 75-mile road march from Gonzales to the Alamo held every year around Texas Independence Day [4:18] Terrence recaps the seventh annual event — 51 starters, 35 finishers, record-breaking heat in Texas [7:32] How Official Project Grit was born — and why it starts with Terrence's story of addiction and redemption [8:19] The mentor who changed everything: Kenny Baker, the man who pulled Terrence out of the gutter [10:32] The Soul Crusher: the defining moment at mile 40 that gave birth to Project Grit's true mission [13:25] Ad break — Roommates to Soulmates Cohort preview call [15:11] Rucking as an equalizer: how a knee injury transitioned Terrence from ultramarathons to rucking [20:28] The power of reaching out — Larry's personal story of texting a friend in a dark moment [23:06] Six years sober and on the edge: Terrence's most gripping near-relapse story and the friend who saved him [28:15] The battle cry — a message for any man who is lone-wolfing it right now [30:04] Discipline before confidence: Terrence's leadership philosophy and how he's raising his kids [32:49] The 1,046-mile Texas ruck: 40 days, solo, self-supported, food caches buried in the desert [39:10] Finding peace in the desert — and why peace isn't the absence of chaos but the presence of God [41:54] The spiritual parallels to 40 days in the desert — temptation, faith, and miraculous provision [48:07] What's next: the Gritty 50 event, a book, and an upcoming documentary [50:37] Final words for the man in the dark — why reaching out to a brother changes everything Five Key Takeaways You don't have to be born tough — grit is built through facing adversity head on, one hard decision at a time. Every man needs a "running buddy" — someone who will call you out, show up for you, and help you make the right decision when your own mind is working against you. Discipline comes before confidence. Motivation fades, but discipline gives you the structure and confidence to overcome whatever comes your way. We are tribal by nature. Lone-wolfing it is a trap — strength, purpose, and redemption are almost always found by letting another man in. Peace is not found in the absence of chaos — it's found in the presence of God within the chaos. Terrence Ogden went from a heroin addict cycling in and out of jail to rucking 1,046 miles solo across the state of Texas — not because he was born tough, but because one man reached out a hand when he was at rock bottom. And Terrence paid that forward. Whether you're in a season of darkness right now, or you know someone who is — this episode is a reminder that the bravest thing a man can do is pick up the phone and say, "I need help." If this conversation moved you, share it with a man in your life who needs to hear it. Go out and live legendary.

If you're looking for a way to improve your fitness, boost your mental health, and reconnect with a deeply human activity — all without going to the gym or pounding your knees on a daily run — then rucking may be the practice you've been looking for.Rucking is simple: throw some weight on your back and start walking. But a little context and a few key tips can make it a safer, more effective, and more satisfying experience. Here to unpack those principles and practicals is Michael Easter, author of Walk With Weight: The Definitive Guide to Rucking. Michael and I first explore the evolutionary and military history of carrying load. We then dive into why rucking is perhaps the most accessible form of training for strength and stamina, and such an effective tool for alleviating back pain, building bone health, and fostering fat loss. We get into using a backpack versus a weighted vest, how much weight you should carry, and how you can get started today with stuff you've probably already got lying around.Resources Related to the PodcastMichael's previous appearances on the AoM podcast: Episode #708: Overcome the Comfort CrisisEpisode #930: Break Your Bad Habits by Escaping the Scarcity LoopThe Comfort Crisis by Michael EasterAoM Article: Cardio for the Man Who Hates Cardio — The Benefits of RuckingAoM podcast interview with the founder of GoRuckAoM Podcast #682: Get RuckingAoM Article: Don't Just Lift Heavy, Carry HeavyAoM Article: How to Take Care of Feet on a Hike or RuckAoM Article: One Weird Trick for Busting Through a Weight-Loss PlateauAoM Article: The Benefits of Hanging for Strength and MobilityAoM Article: Lessons From the Roman Art of WarGoRuckConnect with Michael EasterMichael's Substack: Two PercentSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Michael Easter is a New York Times bestselling author, UNLV professor, and the mind behind “Walk With Weight.” This conversation explores rucking, the evolutionary movement pattern humans are built for that modern fitness has largely overlooked. We discuss why it affects body composition differently, how GPS navigation impacts cognition, and why optimization culture can undermine resilience. Plus, he challenges my assumptions about comfort zones. Michael's insights are practical, contrarian, and rooted in science and experience. Enjoy! This episode is focused on connecting with your body and soul through walking. Yes. Walking. Something I have had zero focus on my entire life. I looked at walking as a waste of time. But now I'm devoting near ⅓ of my exercise time to it. I am about to go out for a 2.5 walk with 45lbs on my back, right now. My guest here is Michael Easter who I've known about since 2021 when he published his book, The Comfort Crisis. In my peer group of people pursuing wellness, this book immediately became a mainstay and I resonated with the message hugely because I continue to question that our modern day conveniences have helped us at all. I think they have hurt us, and this is what Michael showcased in The Comfort Crisis. In that book he really helped put rucking on the map. Rucking is simply walking while carrying weight. It's well known in the military, but now has become commonplace amongst us civilians. Here we discuss the physiological and psychological benefits of not only walking with weights, but simply walking. I feel that through walking, differently than running or mountain biking or other activities, I am connecting with me, and possibly benefitting my body more than with all my more extreme athletic pursuits. Michael's brand new book is called, Walk with Weight: The Definitive Guide to Rucking. Michael Easter has built a remarkable career traveling the world in search of practical ideas that help people live healthier, happier, and more remarkable lives. I tune into hisTwo Percent blog weekly as do hundreds of thousands of other people to hear the latest findings from his extensive research and personal experimenting. Reflections on the Peter Attia/Epstein scandal; How to lower lp(a)—does diet help? What are bio-active peptides? Could they stave off kidney disease? Scientists just tested the fittest 81-year-old in the world—here's what they found; Media erroneously report that intermittent fasting is not effective for weight loss; Sugary drinks may stoke anxiety in teens; Omega-3s support kids' reading fluency and spelling scores; Surprising study shows saturated fats not harmful to kidneys.
What if the simplest way to build strength, improve endurance, and sharpen your mind is already sitting in your closet as an old backpack? Rucking sounds almost too simple to matter. Add weight to a walk and head outside. Yet in this conversation, Dr. Andrew Fix and registered dietitian and RuckFit author Kayla Girgen make a compelling case that rucking may be one of the most practical tools for long-term health. It builds strength, supports bone density, elevates heart rate, and challenges posture without the joint stress that sidelines so many active adults. The deeper insight centers on sustainability. How often do we abandon fitness because we cannot execute the perfect plan? Kayla shares how rucking helped her move beyond all-or-nothing thinking and build consistency. Weight and distance can scale with your season of life. A stroller walk becomes training. A short neighborhood loop becomes meaningful work. When paired with thoughtful nutrition and simple lifestyle shifts like better sleep and stress awareness, the results compound. What changes when we stop chasing optimal conditions and start valuing repeatable effort? The conversation also explores metabolic health through continuous glucose monitoring and how nutrition choices, stress levels, and daily lifestyle patterns influence inflammation and energy. Awareness shapes behavior. Manageable discomfort builds resilience. Whether the load is physical or psychological, growth follows when we choose to engage. The takeaway is grounded and actionable. You do not need elite gear or ideal weather. You need a backpack, a little weight, and the willingness to step outside. I sit down with yet another Jeff, but this one took things to a different level. Over the course of October and November, he completed 122 laps of the Manitou Incline, nearly a mile and over 2,000 feet of gain per lap, turning one of the most brutal stair climbs in the country into a month-long experiment in mental resilience. What started as training for a future unsupported FKT evolved into something much bigger. A Navy veteran with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, he shares how his nervous system adapted to years in combat and why returning to everyday civilian life felt overwhelming. Loud environments, crowds, and constant inputs became difficult, while long, repetitive movement in nature helped turn the volume back down.We talk about why hiking and rucking can work where therapy and medication do not for some veterans, how mundane suffering and repetition create space for processing trauma, and why unsupported FKTs and long efforts with weight may be a wide-open niche for athletes with military backgrounds. He explains how the incline project became a fundraiser and awareness campaign for Warrior Expeditions, a veteran-led nonprofit that helps veterans heal through long-distance hiking. This conversation dives into combat stress, family life, fatherhood, endurance, mental health, and the simple power of left foot, right foot. It is a powerful reminder that the outdoors offers different things to different people, and sometimes the hardest, most boring path is the one that helps us heal the most.Check out Warrier Expeditions: https://warriorexpeditions.org/Follow Jeff Snyder: https://www.instagram.com/jsnydersoloadventures/Chapters00:00 The Manitou Incline Challenge05:10 Mental Resilience Through Hiking07:41 The Impact of Combat on Mental Health10:07 Nature as a Healing Tool13:01 The Role of Community in Recovery15:36 Fundraising for Warrior Expeditions17:58 Accidental Discoveries in Nature20:35 Transitioning from Rucking to Hiking23:15 The Importance of Mindset in Outdoor Challenges25:23 Unexpected Changes in Combat Situations28:01 Daily Life and the Incline Challenge30:31 Supporting Veterans Through Outdoor ActivitiesSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
Chris Anderson speaks with Dr. Brian McCarley about his journey from a head athletic trainer to a long-time successful chiropractor, guiding entrepreneurs, business leaders, and families. From Athletic Training to Chiropractic: Dr. Brian recounts his career shift, explaining that the late-night, intense lifestyle of an athletic trainer was incompatible with being a newlywed. This led him through a brief stint in the business world before choosing chiropractic—a more natural, faith-aligned healthcare approach—necessitating a difficult move to Texas for three years of school. The Entrepreneurial Decision Cascade: Success after the initial leap requires navigating a continuous series of smaller, difficult decisions that, when stacked together, can feel overwhelming. Dr. Brian advocates for prioritizing based on what's urgent versus what's truly important, and learning to make the "least bad decision" when all options are challenging. He suggests using whiteboards and Post-it Notes to visualize and prioritize tasks, and to always assess how one decision will affect others down the road. The Value of Advisors: Having a team of trusted advisors is crucial for gaining an outside perspective, simplifying complex issues, and identifying personal "blind spots" or ego-driven blocks that cloud judgment. Dr. Brian sees his role with patients and clients not as an educator, but as a "guide" to help them become the "hero of their own life."Overcoming "Brain Fog" with Health: The episode dives into the connection between health and entrepreneurial performance. Dr. Brian pinpoints "bright shiny syndrome" and neglecting self-care as common causes of mental clarity issues that compromise business-critical decisions.Practical Health Strategies for High-Achievers:Efficient Exercise: Focus on activities that offer the greatest benefit in the shortest time, citing rucking (walking with a weighted vest) as an effective, low-impact method.Time Management & Delegation: Calculate your effective hourly rate and delegate tasks that cost less than that rate to a VA or part-time help, freeing up the entrepreneur for high-value work and personal time.Hourly Brain Breaks: Set a timer to take a 5-minute break every hour to step away from the computer. This prevents neurological burnout and increases efficiency and problem-solving.The Logic of Intermittent Fasting: Dr. Brian shares his thoughts on intermittent fasting, noting that three meals a day is a product of the industrial revolution and that bodies are designed for periods of fasting. He advises anyone trying it to be deliberate, prepare for mental shifts, and learn to distinguish between true hunger and boredom by drinking water. This episode is NOT sponsored. Summary In this conversation, Ali Damron and Kayla Girgen discuss the benefits of rucking, a form of exercise that involves walking with weight. Kayla shares her journey from a corporate job to becoming a registered dietitian and personal trainer, emphasizing the importance of evolving perspectives on nutrition. They explore the role of AI in nutrition coaching, the integration of rucking with other forms of exercise, and the significance of managing stress and sleep for overall health. Kayla also highlights her upcoming book and programs designed to help women navigate their health journeys, particularly during midlife. Takeaways Rucking is an accessible and effective form of exercise for women. Nutrition perspectives have evolved significantly over the years. AI can assist in nutrition coaching but cannot replace human interpretation. Rucking provides both physical and mental health benefits. It's important to integrate rucking with strength training for optimal results. Women can start rucking with as little as 10 pounds of weight. Rucking can help manage stress and improve blood sugar levels. Sleep and stress management are crucial for weight management in midlife. CGMs provide valuable insights into how lifestyle factors affect health. Community support is essential for maintaining motivation in health journeys. Sound bites "Rucking is walking with weight." "Rucking can help counter bone density." "Rucking is cardio that doesn't suck." Today on Marni On The Move, I'm joined by someone who has redefined what it means to be strong, resilient, and connected to community: Emily McCarthy, co-founder of GORUCK. Emily's story is a masterclass in courage and reinvention. We dive into her rare journey from college athlete to the CIA, the lessons she learned operating in high-stakes environments, and how those same principles—leadership, grit, trust—ultimately inspired the creation of GORUCK with her husband, Jason. We get into the birth and evolution of GORUCK, from launching the very first rucks to building a global movement rooted in service, teamwork, and pushing your limits—physically and mentally. Emily shares how GORUCK helped spark the rise of rucking as a social fitness phenomenon, why it's quietly one of the most effective forms of strength and endurance training, and the very real posture, mobility, and caloric-burn benefits people are experiencing with this accessible, low-impact sport. We talk about gear innovation, why GORUCK's approach to durability changed the industry, and how Emily helped lead the development of women-specific products—something the community had been asking for and she felt deeply passionate about. We also explore the crossover between endurance sports, coaching, and business, how building GORUCK mirrors building any long-term athletic goal, and why the next generation of athletes and leaders is being shaped by community-driven fitness. Emily and I get personal, too—discussing surfing as her passion, navigating fear (yes, even sharks), staying grounded, and the importance of truly dialing into your local community, your body, and your recovery. This conversation is about strength, evolution, leadership, and building something that lasts—whether that's a brand, a sport, or a life you're proud of. On todays episode of Rucking Around, host Ari Fleman chats with guest Chris Vick, owner of Squatch Survival Gear. Chris, a former airborne infantry soldier, explains that his business was born out of modifying his uncomfortable military Alice pack and later using rucking to manage PTSD and chronic injuries following his service. The company's core mission is to overcome existing industry flaws by prioritizing comfort and endurance in pack design, recognizing that proper fit is crucial for both physical and mental resilience during long events. Chris emphasizes that packs intended for carrying significant weight must incorporate a true pack frame and be ergonomically designed to distribute the load across the body's power zone rather than relying solely on connective tissues. They also cover market trends, noting the importance of considering biometric differences when designing gear, leading to new products like a specialized chest strap for women. they wrap it up by offering general advice for new ruckers regarding how to safely adjust the variables of weight, speed, and distance in their training.Follow Chris on Instagram @squatchsurvivalgearVisit the website: squatchsurvivalgear.comSupport the showSubscribe to Running Scared Media wherever you get your podcasts for more Sole Sisters episodes! Our ancestors thrived on struggle; we wilt from inconvenience. The Comfort Crisis author Michael Easter shows how embracing discomfort builds resilience.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1186What We Discuss with Michael Easter:Modern comfort crisis: We've engineered physical activity and challenges out of our lives, leading to sedentary diseases and reduced mental resilience — but our bodies and minds still need discomfort to thrive.Discomfort as medicine: Physical effort, hunger, and temperature swings protect against disease by triggering beneficial adaptations — 80 percent of eating today is driven by boredom or stress, not actual hunger.Transferable toughness: Mental resilience built through physical challenges transfers to other life areas — like how overcoming a difficult hike builds confidence to tackle career or relationship obstacles.Nature's measurable benefits: The "25-3 rule" — 20 minutes in city parks three times a week reduces stress; five hours monthly in wilder nature increases happiness; three days yearly off-grid resets priorities.Start with a two percent mindset: Only two percent of people take stairs when escalators exist. Begin building discomfort tolerance with small daily choices — take stairs, walk during calls, sit on the floor while reading. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps!
