It's 2025, new year, new beginnings and what a start for Tigers Women as they bank their first ever home win in the domestic top flight with a resounding victory over Sale. This also marks our first pod since the news that Jess has become the new Tigers Women and Development Officer and as such as had to leave the Fancast, this means that this week Jacob is joined by friend of the pod and Tigers Women superfan Max Kirby to chat about that big win against Sale and looking forward to an away fixture at a less-than-invincible Sarries. Enjoy!
John Maytham speaks with Stormers head coach John Dobson about the upcoming Champions Cup clash against Sale Sharks at Cape Town Stadium. Jacob is joined by star guest co-host and ex-Tigers Women legend Ufure Ugiagbe (sitting in for Jess) as they talk about Meg Jones hatred of low ponytails, a vegan haggis story that has some very loose relevance to the Big Game and in-between all that we chat through the news that Harry Simmons will be joining the coaching staff of the Women's team as well as his other new coaching duties at the club and the World record Quins broke at Big Game before we review Tigers 42-17 defeat to table-topping high-flying Quins. We then preview Tigers Women's next fixture at home to Sale which is Tigers best opportunity since Ealing to finally getting that mythical home victory over the line! Enjoy!
Welcome to episode 196 with Rory Lamont, who is a former professional Rugby Union player and the co-founder of CAIM, a health and wellness retreat centre in highland Scotland. During his time as a professional rugby player, Rory played for Glasgow Warriors, Sale Sharks and Toulon. He has 29 international caps for Scotland and has represented his country in two world cups. Over the years he was plagued by various injuries and concussions and whilst playing against Wales in the 2012 Six Nations tournament, he suffered a career ending leg break. The injury, the surgeries, medical drugs and loss of both his career and identity pushed Rory in a mental and spiritual crisis which took him to the brink of ending his own life. The collapse of his physical and mental health forced Rory to confront himself and he travelled to Costa Rica where he experienced the transformational healing power of the plant medicine Iboga which helped him to identify the changes he needed to make and he began the journey of healing and inner work that would lead him to the work he does now. In this episode Rory guides me through the highs and lows of his rugby career and the injuries that kickstarted the decline in his mental health. We chat about his first experience with plant medicine and how it helped him and we chat about what we can learn from depression, about learning to let go and to be vulnerable, the importance of healing as part of a community and why this work needs to be made more accessible. We also chat about how scary it is to do these things, why men need rites of passage and the role of the hero's journey and we chat about some of the incredible things that Rory has witnessed while holding space and supporting others. It was wonderful to hear Rory's story and how he learned to navigate his struggles. I can't thank him enough for his openness. The work he does now feels vital and I came away from this conversation feeling hopeful and inspired. Sid has worked with FTSE 100 companies, invested in, and mentored over 30 SME businesses, and had served as the CEO of Sale Sharks rugby for three years. What he discovered is that the most valuable asset in all sectors is people. Sid became involved in the sports sector because of its unique focus on human potential. He wanted to explore what lessons sport could offer and how they might overlap with the business world. As a CEO, he faced common challenges: limited resources, no increase in budget, limited beliefs and a product with limited room for change. All challenges are shared by leaders in many organisations. Achieving their objectives required a shift in behaviour. The same principles applied to maximising performance both on and off the field. To increase productivity Sid knew he needed a fully engaged workforce. Most importantly his first step was to employ a leadership style that demonstrated and embodied his message rather than staying at the usual level of just words on a wall. And this is why I am excited to bring you this conversation with Sid. I've heard many practitioners and coaches discuss the gap between the coaching staff and the CEO level, and so Sid's views and experience on bridging this gap is a powerful insight for all who work in performance sport and within in business outside of sport. Talking Points: The lone voice in creating a connection Putting a foundation of culture in place Past hurt informs future fear Why you can have the best strategy in the world but it's useless if the Human potential is missing Winning is a process bigger than you Why leadership is a show and not a tell If you enjoy this episode please leave a review on iTunes or Spotify platforms, and by doing this you will actively help spread this content to the practitioners that need it. Great catch up with Joe, who's transitioning well into finance and business, after a career in Rugby. A Wasps legend, and stints with Gloucester, Bath, Saracens and Sale Sharks. Proud of his England cap, but accepts he was in an era of Ben Youngs and Danny Care. Loved Rugby, but also didn't love parts of it. The Women's 2021 RWC (held in 2022) was an unforgettable kiwi experience. Not only is New Zealand a beautiful country (flora, fauna & great people), but rugby runs through their veins. The hosts were spectacular, and the Black Ferns put on a show throughout. They defeated a great French side in an exciting semi final, followed by a world class performance against England in the final. The Women's Eagles left it all on the pitch, but it wasn't enough to beat a stout Canadian side. Led by Canadian rugby royalty Sophie de Goede, the team played big against the USA, defeating them twice in 8 days. Both of the de Goede parents were captains for their perspective Canadian sides and they're also great fans of the game travelling the North Island throughout the tournament and livin' the van life. USA won the tourney in 1991, and are only one of three teams to lift the cup (New Zealand has won 6, and England 1). Can the Women's Eagles win it back down unda in 2027 or on home soil in 2031? Allianz Premier 15s Shrinks Update: On the eve of editing and releasing our prerecorded audio, there has been some bitter news out of the Allianz Premier 15s (full press release here). The league will shrink to the following 8 teams, leaving Sale Sharks and Wasps out of the picture for the following year. British fans seem quite upset on twitter (who isn't mad on Twitter these days though?) at the fact that the northern part of the country doesn't have any representation (see the map below). I get that young professional sporting leagues want to grow at a "sustainable rate" ... but why shrink the league? Don't know all of the details, but seems like a step back for growth especially considering that England is hosting the next Women's RWC in 2025. PICKEM!
As part of the launch of the new Heineken Champions Cup season, Aisling O'Reilly was in England catching up with players from all of the competing teams this season. She catches up with some of the Premiership's new signings and transfers, Leicester Tigers' Handre Pollard, Sale Sharks' George Ford, as well as Saracens' Nick Isiekwe and Gloucester's Alex Craig.
