DC's Joker was released this week to simultaneously thunderous uproar and acclaim. Early critics boasted the movie's brilliance, giving it an eight minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Audiences gave it a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, there also seems to be a class of (often deeply cynical) pundits and critics who found the movie problematic, culturally tone deaf, and even dangerous, citing the mass shootings in Aurora and recent acts of Incel violence. Many critics vowed to not see the movie, despite writing about it at length. So, which is it? Is the film a misunderstood masterpiece, hamfisted Todd Phillips bro slop that stands on the shoulders of giants, or something else entirely? Shea, Kasey, and Caleb remote in for a special bonus episode discussing the movie and the hubris surrounding it. Turn That Off! is a podcast that examines the spectacle of popular culture, exploring the bizarre relationship between humans and the (often terrible) media we consume. Please note that we regularly explore unsavory corners of the internet, and don't condone everything we discuss.
