When Julie was in high school, she came home from school to find her mother was gone. That traumatic experience changed her life, and although she didn't know it yet, Jesus was creating divine appointments in which she would begin to know Him, trust Him, and draw closer to Him.Julie's career path helped to grow her faith. She began as an interior designer, and just as she visualized the beauty of a space's transformation, she began to see the same potential in the hearts of those around her. She worked in church ministry for several years, then in 2018, Julie moved to Arizona and became the Director of a prison ministry. Now she serves as the Director of Programming at House of Refuge Sunnyslope in Phoenix, AZ.Listen in as we talk to Julie about leadership, what it means to lead with a trauma-informed lens, and what she envisions for House of Refuge Sunnyslope. With beautiful honesty and humility, Julie shares the wrestlings of her faith and God's revelations to her in the midst of her questions. This episode mirrors the heart of the Weave & Cleave movement and the Great Commission.Connect with Julie: julieann@refugesunnyslope.comLearn more about House of Refuge: https://www.refugesunnyslope.org/

In this episode, we sit down with Timothy and Stephanie Gordon to discuss their compelling new book, “Leave and Cleave: Nine Marriage-Prep Secrets, Once Taught, Now Censored.” We all see the havoc wreaked by divorce. The victims lie strewn everywhere. Why not nip the problem in the bud and start at the beginning—and the head of the marriage river, which is how marriage preparation is done? Tim and Stephanie Gordon, parents of seven, podcast hosts and authors, tackle the essential principles of preparing for a lifelong commitment within the framework of Catholic teaching, including (especially?) the challenging bits. Here they share their motivation behind writing the book, drawing from their personal experiences and the urgent need they see for revitalizing traditional marriage preparation in the Church. We explore key themes from the book, such as the importance of understanding the sacramental nature of marriage, the biblical roles of husband and wife, and the significance of leaving behind past attachments to fully cleave to one's spouse. Timothy and Stephanie offer practical advice for couples, blending theological insights with real-world applications. Whether you're engaged, married, or simply interested in Catholic views on marriage, this episode provides valuable guidance and inspiration. Tune in for an enriching conversation that promises to strengthen your understanding and approach to Catholic marriage. In this interview, we cover: How marriage prep began to weaken after Vatican II Why confusion about the very definition of marriage leads to bad outcomes The Gordon's own journey toward Catholic orthodoxy How the extended adolescence of our culture has cause massive disruptions to the very idea of marriage as a lifelong commitment Why Humanae Vitae didn't quote persuade skeptics of Catholic teaching on contraception Why the traditional view of the roles of husband and wives is enjoying a resurgence among young Catholics Resources mentioned in this episode: The Rules for Retrogrades main website (including the book “Leave and Cleave” under discussion)
Dr. Bob Rhoton is a therapist and professor, as well as the founder of the Arizona Trauma Institute and President of Trauma Institute International - an impressive resume for a man who admits he didn't intend to take the mental health path over four decades ago. What kept Rhoton in the field? As he says, "The more I learned, the more dissatisfied I was with what was out there." In a time when neuroscience wasn't a household word, Rhoton found the ACEs study. He learned the salutogenic model of treatment. He tried things, collected research, helped people regulate, and taught them how to be accountable to themselves. He started seeing sustainable growth in his clients. He started to see change. Today, he's still on a mission to create change - all over the world. With a passion for relationship and connection, Rhoton's view of trauma-informed care is simple: it is the intentional application of compassion - without force, control, manipulation, regimentation, or the pursuit of efficiency. You master it for yourself first, THEN you begin applying it to others. This episode is the heart of trauma-informed care. Jake and Keely Embleton began their trauma-informed care journey in the mission field of Northern Africa. The people they served needed trauma-infomed care, but as newlyweds and new parents in a new country, they needed trauma-informed care, too. Since learning how to vulnerably ask for help, Jake and Keely have dedicated themselves to the work of building encouraging communities where people can grow, learn, and heal. Where they can ask for help, pray, hear the truth, and find their God-given identity. This special episode looks at trauma and healing through the male and female lenses, tackling the big questions: 'How do we keep hold of our TRUE identity and how do we help others do the same?' Please note, this episode discusses PTSD, post-partum depression, and suicidal ideation. For more about Mission Connexion. For more about School Connect.**Looking for Season 1 of Weave & Cleave? From crushing hordes of enemies to perfecting your combat strategy, this system is sure to enhance your D&D experience. Plus, we'll discuss the potential of using minions in combat and how these masteries can take your gameplay to the next level. Prepare for epic battles and let your weapons reign supreme! Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we discuss the new weapon mastery system in the 2024 D&D 5E rules. We cover the Cleave mastery, which allows for an extra attack against a second creature within reach; the Graze mastery, which deals damage to a missed target; and the Nick mastery, which allows for an extra attack as part of the attack action. We discuss the weapons that can have these masteries, when to use them, and potential synergies. We talk about the possibility of using minions in combat and how the weapon masteries can enhance gameplay. Our conversation focuses on the weapon properties introduced in the 2024 rules, specifically the light, push, slow, and topple properties. We breakdown the changes made to two-weapon fighting, the action economy, and the impact on different classes. We highlight the potential power and balance issues with the slow and push properties, as well as the synergy between slow and topple. We express concerns about the potential for combat encounters to become unbalanced and frustrating for players. The conversation in this part focuses on the Vex weapon mastery and its impact on ranged weapons. We discuss the weapons that get the Vex mastery and how it can be used to set up sneak attacks. We also talk about the balance between longbows and shortbows, and the advantages of using Vex for repeated attacks. We share our opinions on the weapon masteries in general and discuss the meta of the game, particularly the disparity between spellcasters and martial characters. We address a listener question about bringing martial characters up to snuff and the potential solutions to the imbalance. The Cleave mastery allows for an extra attack against a second creature within reach. The Graze mastery deals damage to a missed target, providing a consistent damage floor. The Nick mastery allows for an extra attack as part of the attack action. Weapon masteries can enhance gameplay and provide more options for character builds. The 2024 rules introduced new weapon properties, including light, push, slow, and topple. The changes to two-weapon fighting make it more accessible for new players and simplify the action economy. The slow and push properties have the potential to unbalance combat encounters and frustrate players. The synergy between slow and topple can lead to powerful combinations and make melee combat less viable. The hosts suggest that the slow property should have a saving throw or be reduced to a smaller speed penalty. The Vex weapon mastery is primarily for ranged weapons and is useful for setting up sneak attacks. The choice between longbows and shortbows now depends on whether you prioritize slow or more damage. Advantage has become more accessible in 5e, making Vex less impactful in certain situations. The weapon masteries in the 2024 rules have shifted the meta and given martial characters a significant boost. The hosts have mixed opinions on the weapon masteries, with some concerns about balance and power level. In Genesis 2, we get a close look at the events that occurred in the Garden of Eden. We get to focus on the relationship between God and man. Pastor Greg Laurie shares valuable points from this book today. Notes: Genesis 2/Genesis 3 Elohim is the appropriate word to portray God as the Majestic Creator. Yahweh is the personal name God uses when dealing with humanity. Read: Genesis 2:7–9 God created man and breathed life into him. The word, “breathed,” is warmly personal. Genesis 2:7 Eden means, “delight.” God placed man in a real place called, Eden. Eden was hand-made by God Himself, untouched by sin and death, perfect. Adam was tasked with naming the animals. Genesis 2:20 Read: Genesis 2:18, 21–25 God created woman and brought her to the man. The word, “helper,” does not imply inferiority; it's the same term God uses to describe Himself as a helper to His people. God establishes the family and the home: A man and a woman. To have a successful marriage, you must both leave other relationships. Genesis 2:24 To have a successful marriage, the couple must cleave together. Cleave means, “to glue, to cling.” Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church! 1 Corinthians 7:32–33 Our greatest needs are not fulfilled in marriage but in Jesus! Read: Genesis 3:1–9 The devil undermines in four ways. Satan questioned God's Word. “Has God, indeed, said?” Satan added to God's Word. Genesis 3:3 God never said, “Neither shall you touch it.” Satan questioned God's love. Satan denied God's Word. Satan substituted his own lie. Every temptation can be resisted and overcome. James 1:12 Genesis 3:8 God wanted Adam to admit to and confess his sin. --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org.
