In this episode of Nevermind the Dambusters, hosts Jane Gulliford Lowes and James Jefferies discuss the intersection of video games and military history, particularly focusing on RAF Bomber Command. Joined by Ethan Adato, they explore how video games can serve as educational tools, the ethical implications of portraying historical events, and specific games like Bomber Crew that simulate the experiences of bomber crews during WWII. The conversation delves into the immersive nature of video games, their potential to engage younger audiences in history, and the moral complexities involved in recreating wartime scenarios. In this conversation, the speakers explore the representation of war in video games, particularly focusing on the impact of bombing on civilian populations, the challenges of accurately portraying historical events, and the ethical implications of gameplay. They discuss how games can both educate and sanitize war, the responsibility of popular games to address historical realities, and the cultural reflections of war in media. The conversation also touches on the future of war gaming, including the potential of VR experiences and the historical context of war gaming as a whole.Send us a textSupport the showPlease subscribe to Never Mind The Dambusters wherever you get your podcasts. In this special episode, our guest is Mr. William Atkinson "Mr. Bill". His father was an airman in WWII serving in a B-24 Bomber Crew. Mr. Bill co-wrote a book with his father to recount his incredible story. In this episode Bill shares his story and the impact his father had on him. Below is a brief description of the book: James C. Atkinson began life the descendant of an impoverished farming family in rural east-central Mississippi. While a high school senior, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and, like so many young men of his generation, left his home to fight for his country in WWII. After a year of rigorous training, he was qualified as a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B-24 bomber, and what began as the adventure of a lifetime for Sgt. Atkinson, ended in horror and tragedy in the war-torn skies over Ploesti, Romania. Though this is Dr. Atkinson's personal story, it is not unique. Rather, it is representative of the stories of legions of young men from the Greatest Generation who would face the challenge of rebuilding their lives after rising from the ashes of the most destructive war in history. Get the book here: https://a.co/d/2TmQMVu
In this episode, historian and author Jane Gulliford Lowes tells us about the daily lives of Royal Air Force Bomber Crews in 1943, including the story of her Great Uncle. With absolutely astonishing attrition rates, her Uncle Jack's survival is nothing short of remarkable. The story also brings us some insight into the amount of stress these young men experienced, no doubt having lasting effects on those who survived the war. While not air force-specific, we do have an episode coming up in a couple of weeks that talks about combat fatigue and PTSD, and how we approach it so differently now. Chris O'Regan talks to David Miller and Jon Wingrove about how Bomber Crew was developed. World War II bombers have often been simulated in videogame form, be it B17 Bomber on the Intellivision through to B-17 Flying Fortress on the Amiga, Atari ST and PC. Runner Duck Games have taken another look at the simulation of managing a crew in a flying fortress with Bomber Crew on consoles and Steam platforms. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/180728_TSF_Episode192.mp3 Edited by Chris O'Regan

Merry almost Christmas/seasons greetings/have a good time/I should have research religious holidays that happening around now/shut up Nevi, to everyone! I should firstly apologies for me derailing the topic of this podcast. I was tired and it wasn't until I listened back to it I realised I was being an arse, so sorry for that. Anyway, we start this podcast with some news related stuff which we've never done before. We talk about the weirdness that is Death Stranding and the badness that is the loss of Net Neutrality. After that, we have a good chat about video game companions and tired Nevi does his best to ruin it. But then George talks us through Bomber Crew and I get to do a quiz on Earthlock: Festival of Magic. That about sums it up. The chances are extremely slim that we will get to do another podcast before the New Year, I hope you all have a good one. Until next time, bye!
In this episode, we talk about Super Mario Odyssey, mobile-controlled games, cross-platform multiplayer, and the games we're playing (Super Mario Odyssey, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, and Bomber Crew). This episode was recorded in November 2017.
Four hours since leaving home, who knows how many 'til you get there, and only the idle putts of the outboard motor have broken the silence. Silence so thick it's suffocating, to the point that you don't know what will happen if you actually do say something. You almost did early on, but you saw it in its eyes: the nervous anticipation, the anxiety, the fear sweating out of that cartoon cap when it saw you open your mouth, and spared you both the embarrassment. But... Maybe it's not both of you, maybe it's just you. Maybe the cap has no clue what to say to you because you never say anything to it. Maybe if you opened up a little, people would be interested, they'd reciprocate, they'd share too. Maybe you'd be able to start making friends again, have a goddamn life. You realize you've spent so long thinking about this that it wouldn't make sense to talk now, so you just stay quiet. The puttering slows then stops, replaced by the hissing and servos of the ship’s landing gear, as the door whizzes open and meets the ground with a clank. You sigh and reach for the cap, avoiding its gaze as you put it on your head, then look out onto a new world. "Let's-a go." Discussed: The number 314, Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo Switch, the Wii U Curse, Doom (2016), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, Waluigi's Demon Keeper: A Doom Game, backseat game development, Super Mario Bros. 3 McDonald's Happy Meal Goomba, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Time, ugh those Super Mario Odyssey rabbits, Super Mario Mumblecore Roadtrip, Donkey Kong, Pauline's revenge, upcoming Mario film, Minions: A Feast for Bacchus - Total War, Crusader Kings II: Minions Nation DLC, Charles Martinet, the triple-A game design spectrum, fine-toothed special-case comb, Steam Link, Thimbleweed Park, Bomber Crew, Steam, Terroir, wacky upbeat klezmer, boosting the marketing phrase, the arc of microtransactions over time, J Allard, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Xbox One X, game fatigue, Nick Breckon Sponsored by: Squarespace (with offer code "thumbs" for 10% off), Omaha Steaks (enter offer code "idle" into the search bar for a special offer)

In this super-special (to read: fucking insanely long) ultra-ranty completely blue-light-special-on-psychotic episode, we mark our 3 Year Anniversary with an epic exploration of the historical, WWII apocrypha that explains "Bomber Crew." It looks like a happy sttupid cartoon game for kids, but (much like our podcast itself) is actually a demonic clown that rips its own face off as it consumes you in it's gaping maw of abyssal hellfire. Many thanks to all our listeners, celebrating 3 years of ULTRA-EXCELLENCE! -ENDURANCE CHALLENGE: Reach the end of this episode, and earn a imaginary "Fucking Super Champeeen-Fan: BLGPC, 17'" achievement-get badge). - ...or... (FOR POSERS): BLG THE COLUMN: Can't handle the 7 hours of pure fucking awesome? Well, this week's installment of the column will be up by Weds, offering a condensed version of our feelings regarding "Bomber Crew." www.bestlinuxgames.com

We had the privilege of having a complete 7-man crew who made up the different roles on a Lancaster bomber during the Second World War at Chalke Valley History Festival in 2015. George ‘Johnnie’ Johnson, Jo Lancaster, Frank Tilley, Hal Gardner, John de Hoop, Dave Fellowes, Steve Bethell were in discussion with Paul Beaver. It was the chance to hear what it was like to fly over Nazi-occupied Europe, whether pilot, bomb- aimer, navigator, flight engineer, tail-gunner, radio operator or mid-upper gunner – and from men whose combined experience amounted to over 150 operations.Recorded at Chalke Valley History Festival 2016.www.cvhf.org.uk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dec. 17, 2015. Journalist and author Gregg Jones reconstructed the lives and times of ten airmen aboard U.S. Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator 41-23711, Jerk's Natural, which disappeared over Austria on October 1, 1943. Jones traced the lives of the fallen servicemen, situates them within a larger story of air combat deaths in Europe in the summer and fall of 1943, and tells of his own personal journeys to the village in southern Austria where the men disappeared. Through his encounters in Austria and communities across America, Jones drew a portrait of the lingering impact of war and the ordeal of "ambiguous loss" and "unresolved grief" experienced by the loved ones of the missing crew.
