The March 8, 1976, issue of Sports Illustrated featured Buffalo Braves star Bob McAdoo on the cover, captured in a striking close-up portrait by photographer Neil Leifer, holding the ball at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium under the headline "Hottest Shot in the Game: Buffalo's Bob McAdoo." Just one year removed from winning the 1975 NBA MVP award—his second straight scoring title at 34.1 PPG in 1974-75—McAdoo was still dominating as one of the league's premier scorers and rebounders, leading the Braves in a strong season and representing the peak of his individual brilliance in Buffalo. However, his tenure with the Braves ended abruptly that December when contract disputes and the team's unwillingness to meet his salary demands prompted a trade to the New York Knicks for center John Gianelli and cash. Injuries, including a persistent back issue and later more severe setbacks, began to erode his consistency despite continued high scoring. McAdoo then became a journeyman: traded to the Boston Celtics in 1979 (one season), then to the Detroit Pistons (waived in 1981 due to injuries), a brief stint with the New Jersey Nets, before landing with the Los Angeles Lakers on Christmas Eve 1981 in a low-key trade for a second-round pick and cash to bolster depth after Mitch Kupchak's injury. In L.A., he reinvented himself as a potent sixth man on the Showtime-era teams alongside Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy, contributing key scoring off the bench to help secure two NBA championships in 1982 and 1985 before concluding his NBA career. Named to the NBA's 75th anniversary team, the 6-10 McAdoo was a force in the NBA and one of it's most prolific scorers winning three scoring titles in succession and is the last player in the league to average 30 points and 15 rebounds per game in 1974. One of the most dominant players in NBA history was still at his peak in 1976, scoring 42 points for the Braves on December 7th of that year. But two days later he was traded to the Knicks and McAdoo tells us that's when he knew this game was actually a business. He remembers what a thrill it was to be on the cover of SI for the first and only time and he recalls how being named MVP is the ultimate prize… until you win an NBA Championship. He tells us how he came off the bench for the first time ever for Pat Riley's teams and while he didn't start most games, he certainly finished them. And he reminisces about meeting his childhood hero Earl “The Pearl” Monroe and what it his relationship was like with Kareem, Riley and Jerry West. One of the smoothest to ever do it in the NBA… Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo on the Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It appears teams are looking to exploit the Pistons weaknesses. Are you concerned about the NBA Playoffs?
On this episode of the Palace of Pistons Podcast, Aaron Johnson and Jasper Apollonia break down the Detroit Pistons' recent losses to the Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs and what those games revealed about Detroit's ability to compete with the NBA's best teams. As expectations continue to rise around the Pistons this season, the guys analyze where Detroit struggled against elite competition and whether those issues could become a problem in the playoffs. Aaron and Jasper dive into the biggest takeaways from both matchups, including Detroit's offensive execution, defensive breakdowns, and the areas where the team still needs to improve if it wants to truly contend for an NBA championship. They also discuss the impact of star guard Cade Cunningham and whether the supporting cast around him is strong enough to match up with the league's top contenders. The episode also explores whether head coach J.B. Bickerstaff should consider making adjustments to the Pistons' rotation moving forward. Should Detroit tighten the rotation, experiment with different lineups, or make strategic changes to compete with the league's elite teams? With the playoffs approaching and championship conversations beginning to heat up, the guys debate the biggest question surrounding the Pistons right now: Are the Detroit Pistons actually a legitimate NBA championship contender, or are they still a step behind the league's top teams? Valenti and Rico wonder the importance of tonight's game for the Pistons against the Spurs.
Mike and Rico put a bow on today's show with a Pistons conversation regarding their game against the Spurs tonight and what to make of their recent rough stretch. The guys were then joined by Wojo and Riger in cross-talk.
The guys continue their Pistons talk, incorporating some of their thoughts on how the rest of the season could shake up.
Cinco de Luncho goes full sports-history rabbit hole. Evan counts down the top five most “nondescript” championship teams ever, sparked by a debate about OKC not being much of a road draw. From the 2011 Mavericks to the 2004 Pistons to the undefeated 1972 Dolphins, the list turns into an argument about what really makes a team memorable. Then it gets weird in the best way: the guys dive into an old Super Bowl III conspiracy angle, argue about whether history would even care if something like that came out today, and somehow end up comparing it to an Abe Lincoln “what if” scenario. Plus, the conversation spills into free agency chaos, “New Team Who Dis” season, and a quick Giants roster-building debate off the calls.

Munaf Manji and Dave Essler talk betting for Thursday. Cash That Ticket returned Thursday, March 5, 2026, with Munaf Manji and Dave Esler recapping a Best Bet win on Arkansas over Texas and pivoting to Thursday night picks across the NBA, plus two MLB win totals. Manji said his prior play, 76ers Jazz over 237.5, missed badly, while Esler noted Arkansas delivered without stress. In the NBA, they opened Pistons at Spurs, with San Antonio favored by 3.5 and a 228.5 total, and both teams largely healthy. With the clubs meeting recently in Detroit, Esler framed the matchup as a Pistons revenge spot and questioned whether the Spurs were becoming overvalued, leaning Detroit plus the points and the under, expecting a tighter, playoff type game. Manji agreed on the under and said Detroit's season long defensive profile supported another lower scoring result, while suggesting a better Pistons number could appear closer to tip. Esler also highlighted Jalen Duren points and rebounds over 29.5, and Manji backed it with Duren's production in recent Spurs matchups. Next was Lakers at Nuggets, with Denver favored by 5.5 and a 240.5 total. Manji cited a clean Lakers report aside from Maxi Kleber questionable and noted Denver's report included Cam Johnson questionable, Spencer Jones and Peyton Watson out, and Aaron Gordon not expected back yet. Esler said the rising total was the most notable market feature and leaned Lakers plus the points, including a first half look, along with the over. Manji also leaned Lakers and the over, pointing to Denver's recent defensive issues and shaky home cover results. The show then promoted a pregame.com special, described as $10 for $50 in bulk dollars, limited to one per person. On MLB win totals, Esler and Manji both leaned under 83.5 on the Rangers, citing injury concerns and rotation uncertainty, and both leaned under 84.5 on the Brewers, citing rotation questions and a step back expectation. For Best Bets, Esler played Arkansas State minus 7 or 7.5 over Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Tournament, while Manji made Pistons Spurs under 228.5 his Best Bet, and both closed with caution on conference tournament betting volatility.
