In this episode of Battleground '45 Saul and Patrick look at the Nazi Occupation of The Channel Islands, the only part of British territory occupied by the Germans in World War Two. Together they examine the complexities of this occupation, the treatment of the locals, the collaboration and resistance that arose, and the lasting questions it raises about wartime choices. They also look at few instances the war came ashore on the otherwise peaceful islands, with commando raids and the remarkable story of double agent Eddie Chapman. Mayor Grant Smith is defending Palmerston North after ESPN reported a source close to the Spanish Women's World Cup team said they left the city two days early because it's boring. Staff cutbacks are brewing at Massey University, as the main campus in Manawatu, as well as Auckland and Wellington, has been unable to escape the troubles the tertiary sector is experiencing - falling student numbers and overseas students staying away. The University is asking for expressions of interest for voluntary redundancies. And Jimmy talks to Kathryn about two local centenarians, both WWII vets, Eddie Chapman, and Oliver Candy, who recently passed away.
An air force plane has flown low over Palmerston North to say a special happy birthday. World War 2 veteran Eddie Chapman is turning 100 today, quite the achievement for a man who spent his 21st birthday in a German prisoner of war camp. Jimmy Ellingham reports.

On this episode of Highkey Obsessed, Thomas dives deep into the story of Eddie Chapman aka Agent ZigZag. Chapman was a man of many skills, a truant turned soldier, turned petty criminal, turned criminal mastermind turned Nazi spy, he would prove to be one of the most important double agents during World War II. This is one of the few stories odd enough to truly deserve the mantle, stranger than fiction. If you dig what you're hearing be sure to give us a rating and review wherever you get your podcasts. HUNGARY AND ROMANIA BY TRAIN: PART ONE In this episode I'm joined by someone you've never heard of, my good friend Eddie Chapman. Eddie is a devoted rambler and part-time rapper who lives in Glasgow, Scotland. Eddie grew up in the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield and developed a love for the landscape through hiking in the nearby Peak District. He now spends his walking time bagging munros in the Scottish Highlands. This is part one of two episodes covering a trip Eddie and I undertook across Hungary and Romania in 2015. In part one we recount our travels through the Great Hungarian Plain, en route to the Romanian Carpathians. It's a light-hearted episode with recollections of unusual experiences, including owl-headed body-builders, fire water and rural sports bars. All this was experienced as we walked the Great Plain and fumbled our way through Europe by train. We saw some incredible wildlife in one of Europe's most important landscapes - the Great Hungarian Plain - and would definitely recommend it if you're into birds. But do listen to what we did wrong! On that note, the episode contains an important safety message: don't take risks out on the water and always bring safety equipment with you. Don't make the same stupid mistakes that we did if you visit the River Tisza! Thanks for tuning in and we hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Brush Pass with Bill Koenig. The long-running U.S. panel show To Tell The Truth had a panel trying to determine who of three people had performed some feat or had some career, etc. At least four times, the show had people who worked in intelligence. One was John Le Carre. Others were Eric Ericsson, who posed as a traitor in World War II and wrote a book called The Counterfeit Traitor. It was made into a movie starring William Holden. Others were Pawal Monat, a Polish spy who defected and the other was Eddie Chapman, who was a double agent for the British against the Nazis.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, the old saying goes, and the dark days of World War Two were definitely desperate times. Had Chapman been living, working, and stealing at any other time in history, he may have found governments and military agencies — and those who regularly arrested him — to be much less lenient than they were. He wasn't the sort to be trusted with anything, yet British intelligence did trust him. And so did the Germans.
Eddie Chapman has made many contributions to his various roles in life regarding his family and friends. This interview allows my listeners an opportunity to hear "The Man" tell his story. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wcps/support
Cairns is the main project of Milwaukee musician, John Larkin, who debuted his initial recordings in 2015. The newest release, Entanglement, is Cairns’ debut full-length with a full band. While performed and recorded by mostly Larkin, himself, he added contributions from other Milwaukee musicians to fill out the soundscape – Caley Conway, Eli Smith, Eddie Chapman, Sam Pekarske and Joe Kirschling are now also part of the live ensemble. Layered and expansive, Entanglement masks its complex time signatures and rhythms with layers of meticulous sound and dynamic swells through every track and nearly every song features drastic stylistic changes throughout. No two moments carry the same weight. This release marks significant development in the complexity of Cairns’ sound and Larkin’s songwriting. Its name is derived from the phenomenon of quantum entanglement, befitting of the direction the project has taken. Tune into WMSE’s Local/Live on Tuesday, November 27th to hear the newest from Milwaukee’s Cairns. Cairns began back in early 2013 following the release of a self-titled EP. Back then, the live format was simpler and quieter, staying truer to the bedroom recordings done by John Larkin. The project was originally intended to remain in a simple format – light percussion, sparse acoustic/electric guitar, keyboard – but quickly built into something more aggressive and dynamic, evolving beyond what could be considered a solo project. The latest release, Current, was released in June of 2016. These songs were originally written and recorded by John, but in the process of preparing to perform them live, the songs strayed from the original recordings. This process created something much more organic, influenced by the different perspectives of each member of the group. The latest incarnation features Caley Conway on bass, Eli Smith on drums, Eddie Chapman on electric organ and percussion, and D’amato on bari sax. It’s worth noting that everyone in Cairns has their own project that they actively pursue. Caley and D’amato each have projects under their own names, Eli performs solo as Honeymooners, and Eddie fronts a band called Gauss. Upcoming releases include a pair of collaboratively written songs that were recorded by Kevin Dixon as well as three music videos directed and shot by Sam Kirchoff. These will all be released sometime throughout the summer. Upcoming shows are July 7th at Circle A with Wavvy V; Aug 4 with Har-di-har, JE Sunde, and Bum Alum; and Breadfest, which will be happening mid-August. Tune into WMSE to listen to a live set from Cairns on Tuesday, May 23rd — WMSE.org to stream live or in the archives, or simply tune your radio to 91.7 FM at the 6 o’clock hour.
Ben Macintyre discusses Agent Zigzag - his bestselling book on the true story of a professional criminal named Eddie Chapman, a successful British double agent who infiltrated the Nazi intelligence services during World War II. A notorious safe-breaker before the war, Chapman duped the Germans so successfully that he was awarded their highest decoration, the Iron Cross. He remains the only British citizen ever to win one. His story is one of chance and charm. Recruited as a spy whilst serving time in a Jersey jail, Chapman persuaded his German spy-masters that he was serving the Third Reich, but when they parachuted him into Norfolk in 1944 he delivered himself immediately to MI5. Because of the advanced and highly secretive code breaking at Bletchley Park, MI5 were expecting this unknown spy, with his German name of Agent Fritz. Reflecting his ambivalent status, his new British handlers called him Agent Zigzag. Ben Macintyre says that Chapman's missions of sabotage and feeding false messages back to Germany were instrumental in saving hundreds of lives, as well as averting the V1 bombers from St Paul's Cathedral.
