The Conquering Truth
Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth: Dispensationalism's Favorite Verse

The Conquering Truth

One of the most common objections we get from dispensationalists is that we do not know how to “rightly divide the Word of Truth”, which is taken from II Timothy 2:15. Based on the dispensational view popularized by Scofield, Larkin, Ryrie, and others, this verse is a foundational hermeneutical passage instructing the church that God's word must be broken into divisions so that it can be properly understood. But not only is the dispensational view of this verse incorrect, it also goes against the hermeneutical and doctrinal thrust of all of Scripture, which instead of teaching division, teaches that Christ's purpose was to bring unity. In this episode, we examine II Timothy 2:15 in light of a broader view of God's Word. We look at many passages where scripture teaches that Christ came to reconcile man to God, to unify the Jews and the Gentiles, and to restore God's creation. We look at the dispensational insistence that the church and Israel must be forever separated from one another, and explain why Scripture teaches this is not true. God did divorce the physical nation of Israel, and to the extent that it continues in the world, it is an example of what happens to those who reject Him. But the Israel that is made up of those Old and New Testament saints that are the children of Abraham by faith, is reckoned in the Son of David, the risen Christ, the True Israel, and regardless of their earthly heritage, all those who believer are made one in Christ and are partakers of the promises. Interview by Kris PetersTweed Heads rock outfit The Whiskeys are a time bomb waiting to go off. After a number of years honing their skills, mainly by playing a bunch of live shows, the double-edged sword of Benny Whiskey (guitar, vocals)and Josh Larkin (drums) are now in the final stages of getting ready to unleash their debut EP Old Soul Young Blood on the world. The EP cycle began in February 2024 when The Whiskeys premiered their very first single, Hoedown, through HEAVY, and after a highly promising start, it seemed as though the Metal Gods had claimed yet another victim when more than 12 months passed without a follow-up single. But there was much more happening behind the scenes than the band's lack of releasing more music implied.Instead of rushing things out and hoping for interest, The Whiskeys elected to play the long game, plugging away on the live circuit and fine-tuning their songs so that when they finally come out on June 20, they are given the best possible chance of invading the earholes of as many people as possible. After being privy to an advance listen, HEAVY can assure you the wait has been more than worth it, with Lankin joining us earlier this week for a chat about the past, present and future of The Whiskeys."We recorded this close to two years ago," he admitted, "and we've been sitting on it. We released one track already - Hoedown - which we're really happy with. We've got good feedback from that, and we're just ready to do the EP now. As life gets in the way and things happen and time just goes pretty fast, so we were like, we better drop this thing (laughs). We just made a decision, and the time is now, next Friday."We asked Larkin to dive into the musical nature of the EP."We wanted to pay homage to some old school vibe," he smiled. "Like a bit of old soul, young blood, which is the name of the EP. We wanted to hark back to the 70s and the 60s, Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and just all the vibe that just gives modern rock its soul. We just tried to dig deep into that and bring all our influences, which comes from the modern punk rock and hardcore era. Then we just threw it in a pot and served it up (laughs)."In the full interview, Josh shared insights into the creative process of The Whiskeys music, noting the blend of musical influences and the challenges of balancing genres while maintaining their unique sound. We reviewed the EP's tracks one at a time, highlighting the energetic Hoedown, the blues-influenced Places, and the catchy Break Away, with Josh affirming their goal of creating an engaging atmosphere. We discussed the intro and outro pieces and their intended effect, as well as upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The Compton's Cafeteria Riot Play, with Shane Zaldivar and Saoirse Grace, Part 1 (S7E16)

Storied: San Francisco

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2025 40:59

Saoirse Grace was one of the first successful in vitro pregnancies in Massachusetts. In this episode, Saoirse is joined by her Compton's Cafeteria Riot play costar, Shane Zaldivar. The two share short versions of their respective life stories and how they got to the Bay Area and San Francisco. Then we dig into the history of the Compton's Cafeteria riot, followed by a conversation on the play about the riot, their roles in it, and the actual lived experiences of trans people today. Saoirse, who plays Collette in the play, was born in Boston and grew up a little there, and a little in San Diego. But she got into some trouble in school and was sent to reform school in Austria, near her ancestral homeland in the Dolomites. After high school, not exactly wanting to come back to the US, she went to France for college, where she studied Spanish language literature. This whole time, Saoirse was a professional actor. She started acting in third grade. By seventh grade or so, she knew that acting was something she loved to do. After about a decade of just acting, Saoirse joined an aerial circus, where she was a trapeze artist for a group in Texas called Sky Candy. After a few years in Austin, working and doing circus performances, Saoirse came to San Francisco to go to law school. She says, perhaps half-jokingly, that she still wanted to perform, but to do so in a way that made more money than acting. She went to USF and did some police accountability work, but ultimately, practicing law didn't work out. And so, after a short time in Las Vegas doing porn and sex work, Saoirse came back to The Bay to do a PhD program to become a professor. It was another opportunity to have an audience, but to also make more money than other performing careers. But that also didn't pan out. This run with the Compton's Cafeteria Riot play is Saoirse's first foray back into acting in more than a decade. Backing up a little, I ask Saoirse about her first move to San Francisco and what she thought of it. She shares the story of leaving Austin, packing up as much as she could fit on her bicycle in Seattle, and riding down the Pacific coast to get here. Wow. At the end of that roughly 1,000-mile ride, she arrived in The City during the Pride parade in 2013. The timing! She soon found work as a bicycle mechanic, something Saoirse still does more than a decade later. Then we get to know Shane Zaldivar, who plays Rusty in Compton's Cafeteria Riot. Shane was born and raised in Florida, where she spent time between there and Belize, where a lot of her family is from. Her mom had Shane when she was relatively young, and so she spent a lot of time with her mom's family, both in Belize and in the US. Life in Florida was rough for Shane. She was bullied a lot early in life for her femininity. She says that when she visits now, she gets no joy out of the place except to be with family members. Belize was much more hospitable for her. She went to middle school and high school in the Central American country. But she ended up getting a scholarship to attend college at Florida International University, which she says is a diverse place. It was at college that Shane had several awakenings—her sexuality, her love of doing drag. But she says her biggest realization, the one that led her to the Bay Area, was around cannabis. Where she had previously bought into the idea that weed was this terrible thing, from the first time Shane tried it, it changed everything for her. Shane set out to learn everything she could about the plant and its medicinal, healing properties. She took a college class in Florida on hallucinogens and in that class learned about a school in Oakland called Oaksterdam University. That's what led Shane to The Bay. She raised money for the flight and registration at her new school. Once here, she patched together a liberal arts degree in Oakland, studying such topics as hospitality, theater, and anthropology. It was 2014, and she lived in Oakland, too. But it dawned on her later that San Francisco was only a bridge away. After moving around from hostel to hostel, she found an affordable place of her own in The City. It didn't take Shane long to fall in love with the Bay Area. She soon discovered events like Folsom Street Fair and spots like The Stud. She got a job in the Ferry Building and found a place to live, a place she still resides in 10 years later. She says that San Francisco is where she really got to explore her art and her activism. In addition to being in a band, Shane is the Pop-up Drag Queen, a local fixture who performs al fresco, usually in front of the Ferry Building. Then we talk about her foray into acting, something that came about relatively recently in Shane's life. From the first time she acted, back in Florida, she felt an intense joy that has stayed with her. It marked the first time she played with gender. Today, she identifies as a trans woman. The first run of Compton's, back in 2018, was her return to the art and her first really serious acting gig. We wrap up Part 1 with the historical event behind the Compton's Cafeteria riot, the basis of the play. It was August 1966, so nearly 60 years ago. No one is sure of the exact date, but it was a weekend. “The Tenderloin at the time was the Vegas of San Francisco,” Saoirse tells us. The neighborhood was also the only place that drag queens and trans women were allowed to exist. There was less of a distinction between the two back then—something important to understand, both in this conversation and also in the play. Similarly to the story of Stonewall in New York (which took place two years after Compton's), police did their best not to let these folks exist. The cops commonly conducted raids and sweeps, both on the street and in otherwise safe spaces, which Compton's Cafeteria was. But on that day in August 1966, a trans woman at Compton's decided to fight back, throwing a mug of hot coffee on an officer. Her tight-knit community had her back, as did Vanguard (a radical queer and trans youth organization), and the riot had begun. Check back next week for Part 2 with Shane and Saoirse. And find tickets to the Compton's Cafeteria Riot play here. We recorded this podcast inside the performance space on Larkin in the Tenderloin where Compton's Cafeteria Riot is having its 2025 run. Remember, good bourbon equals good times with friends and family. Live your life uncut and unfiltered. What happens when an Australian Navy veteran brings his larrikin spirit to Kentucky bourbon country? Pure magic in a bottle. Larrikin Distillery represents the beautiful collision of Aussie irreverence with America's native spirit, creating something truly special in the heart of bourbon country. In this father-son tasting adventure, we explore Larrikin's remarkable 124.2 proof Single Barrel bourbon with special guest Knobs, who brings a refreshingly honest beginner's perspective to high-proof whiskey. "It's like if sand could be liquefied," he observes, capturing that distinctive dry mouthfeel that characterizes this unique expression.Founded by Greg Keely, who served with distinction in both the US and Australian navies, Larrikin doesn't pretend to have bourbon heritage dating back to the Pilgrims. Instead, they focus on crafting extraordinary Kentucky whiskey they're genuinely "stoked to pour." That authenticity shines through in this 8-year single barrel, with its mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% barley delivering deep complexity. The tasting reveals a fascinating contrast between experienced and novice palates. While Tiny picks up nuanced notes of caramel, tart apple, and leather, Knobs navigates the high proof with candid commentary that will resonate with whiskey newcomers. Their Barrel Bottle Breakdown scoring system (examining nose, body, taste, and finish) ultimately awards this bourbon a respectable 13/18 – impressive for an $79 bottle.Between sips, we explore the world of hazmat whiskeys (over 140 proof), the regulations governing bourbon production, and why Larkin's boxing kangaroo logo perfectly captures their approach to whiskey-making. Frank Larkin's commitment to America is remarkable. A former Navy SEAL, he served in the Secret Service, at the Pentagon and as sergeant-at-arms of the U.S. Senate. However, as correspondent Scott Pelley reports, Larkin's most significant contribution may be what he's done since his son, Ryan, took his own life. Ryan was, like his father, a decorated Navy SEAL, and his death by suicide was attributed to depression. But Frank Larkin did not accept this explanation, and when pathologists discovered Ryan suffered from scarring in his brain, likely due to repeated low-level blast exposure, this father campaigned for a change in how Special Operations and the rest of the military train and protect their service members. When wildfires tore through the Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods of Los Angeles this winter, 9 billion pounds of toxic ash and debris were left behind. Now, a massive cleanup effort is underway to clear the 13,000 properties destroyed in the fire. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi goes behind the scenes with the Environmental Protection Agency as it completes the first step: removing the hazardous waste. The rest of the debris is in the hands of the Army Corps of Engineers. Despite expedited cleanup efforts, some residents say they still don't feel safe returning home. Bill Whitaker reports from the chaotic and high-speed racetrack of “America's original extreme sport” - Indian Relay. As horse nation tribes unite for an exciting and dangerous bareback horse race, Whitaker looks at how the sport continues to grow and offer new opportunities of pride to the next generation of Native American youth. Philip Larkin was terrified of death from an early age; Thomas Hardy contemplated what the neighbours would say after he had gone; and Sylvia Plath imagined her own death in vivid and controversial ways. The genre of self-elegy, in which poets have reflected on their own passing, is a small but eloquent one in the history of English poetry. In this episode, Seamus and Mark consider some of its most striking examples, including Chidiock Tichborne's laconic lament on the night of his execution in 1586, Jonathan Swift's breezy anticipation of his posthumous reception, and the more comfortless efforts of 20th-century poets confronting godless extinction.Non-subscribers will only hear an extract from this episode. The Detroit Red Wings offseason changes have already begun, with more potentially on the way. Tune in as we're joined by Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit (and Winged Wheel Podcast contributor) on this episode, opening by discussing the report that Todd McLellan, Steve Yzerman, and the Red Wings have moved on from goaltending coach Alex Westlund, and how this relates to Hockeytown's issues in net over the years: can new coaching help, or is the rotating group of Cam Talbot, Petr Mrazek, Alex Lyon, and others to blame? How does this affect Sebastian Cossa coming up (with Trey Augustine a ways away) (3:40)? Next, Max offers his thoughts on Steve Yzerman's biggest holes and offseason tasks to help the Red Wings roster: what support does Detroit need for Dylan Larkin, Patrick Kane, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, and Marco Kasper at forward - like Mitch Marner or Nikolaj Ehlers? Do they need to prioritize a defenseman to help Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson - like Gavrikov? Can Nate Danielson, Carter Mazur, Axel Sandin Pellikka, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, or others be the answer (9:35)? After that, a comprehensive NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs update, including Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson in a lively bench brawl between Washington and Montreal, the Leafs dominating Tkachuk's Senators, the Lightning and Panthers trading majors (and Cooper and Maurice exchanging banter) in the Battle of Florida, Connor Hellebuyck collapsing for the Winnipeg Jets, TNT not calling games in person, & plenty more (29:25). We then get into our 2025 NHL Draft Prospect Profile on Cameron Reid: can the Kitchener Rangers defenseman be of interest for the Red Wings, or is someone like Aitcheson or Smith for attractive for Steve Yzerman and Detroit, who will want more size (1:02:45)? All of that and plenty more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:12:20) - enjoy! Gold Coast Film Festival: Jane Larkin on the lived-in perspective of her elite sports drama The Edge

The Curb | Culture. Unity. Reviews. Banter.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 40:13

Before commencing her career as a filmmaker, Jane Larkin was an Australian representative sprinter, pushing her body to the limits on the track. In the moments of preparation, cooldowns, and every minute in between, Jane was building friendships, learning from fellow athletes, and seeing a world of sports that we rarely get to see in cinema. After shifting over to acting in 2018, Jane embraced roles in films like Ron Howard's Thirteen Lives and the Netflix series Boy Swallows Universe, before commencing on her biggest creative project yet: The Edge. Jane wears multiple hats on her feature film debut, embracing the role of director, writer, producer, and co-lead actor, as she plays the role of Annie Murphy.Like Jane, Annie is a sprinter, and it's her performance, alongside fellow athletes-turned-actors, Lily Riley a powerlifter who plays Sylvia, and paralympic swimmer Mei Ichinose who plays Yui, that gives The Edge a docu-drama feeling. This is ultimately a film about the world of sport, and to get that holistic perspective, Jane consciously brings us into the lives of Annie, Sylvia, and Yui, with each given their chance to explore their lived perspectives of women in the world of athletics.Jane's script comfortably gives space for each actor to explore the realities of sports: the visceral nature of vomiting during training, the prevalence of sexual abuse, the continued harassment and criticism which leads to complex relationships with body images. But, while these are heavy subjects to present on screen, Jane consciously gives them space to breath by imbuing each character with another aspect that is rarely seen on screen from a woman's perspective: friendship in competitive spaces. As Annie, Sylvia, and Yui don't directly compete with one another on a sports level, a lesser film might find space to have them compete with each other outside of the sporting arena. It's then comforting to see The Edge delve into supportive relationships, with each character given the other the space to be nurtured, heard, and guided through whatever challenges they're facing. The Edge's levity and warmth comes from these core relationships, allowing the film to resonate long after its finished. These aspects are also elevated by scenes that carry immense visual weight, whether it be a closing shot of the women on a beach, or the overwhelming in tone underwater shots of Yui. In the following interview, Jane refers to one of cinemas great sporting films - Chariots of Fire - as an inspiration for her creative work as a filmmaker, and it's in these moments of invigoration, captured brilliantly by cinematographer Ben Knibb, that The Edge makes its mark as an impressive entry in the Australian sports genre. This is an expansive interview which ranges from Jane discussing her decision to shift from athletics to acting, how she managed that docu-drama vibe, and finally, talking about the films upcoming world premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival on Friday 2 May 2025. The Edge will also have an encore screening on Tuesday 6 May 2025. For all ticketing details, visit GCFF.com.au. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
