In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren examine the Detroit Red Wings—a franchise inching toward contention but still battling to break through. It's been nine consecutive seasons without a playoff berth in Hockeytown. The last time the Red Wings won a playoff series? Back in 2013.Now, under Steve Yzerman's front office leadership, Detroit hopes that one major offseason swing—a trade for John Gibson—can stabilize their goaltending and finally push them over the edge. Will it be enough?IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Red Wings: A decade of frustration[00:36] Power play high, penalty kill worst in the league[01:00] John Gibson acquisition: a franchise-altering gamble?[02:00] Goaltending swap: Gibson for Mrazek[02:45] Other offseason additions: JVR, Appleton, Hamonic[03:50] Prospect pool preview: Danielson, Mazur, Cossa[04:30] Offensive core: DeBrincat, Larkin, Raymond, Kane[05:15] Is there enough depth if someone goes down?[06:00] Playoff competition: Too many contenders, too few spotsKEY TAKEAWAYS:John Gibson is the swing piece. If he returns to form, Detroit may finally have the goaltending they've lacked for years. If not, the playoff drought could hit a full decade.Power play success masked penalty kill disaster. Detroit ranked 4th in PP% last year—but dead last (32nd) in PK%, and had just 2 shorthanded goals.Yzerman's offseason was conservative. Outside of the Gibson trade, additions like James van Riemsdyk, Mason Appleton, and Travis Hamonic won't move the needle significantly.Detroit's window is tightening. With the East getting deeper (Montreal, Ottawa, Columbus, Buffalo all fighting), the margin for error is razor thin.Offensive leaders like Dylan Larkin, DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond, and Patrick Kane must stay healthy—this team can't afford to lose top-end scoring.FINAL VERDICT:Detroit made one major move this offseason—and if John Gibson plays like the All-Star he once was, it could be a franchise-defining deal. But with penalty-kill woes, aging secondary scoring, and intense wild card competition, the Red Wings remain a bubble team in a crowded East.Is year 10 of the rebuild the one that finally breaks the curse—or does the streak stretch into double digits?RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX (Twitter): https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787HASHTAGS:#DetroitRedWings #NHLWraparound #SummerCoolers #JohnGibson #PetrMrazek #JamesvanRiemsdyk #MasonAppleton #WilliamLagesson #AlbertJohansson #JonatanBerggren #ElmerSoderblom #SteveYzerman #VladimirTarasenko #AlexLyon #PatVerbeek #LucasRaymond #AlexDebrincat #DylanLarkin

Larkin Seiple on shaping the horror of Weapons

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 323: Cinematographer Larkin Seiple Cinematographer Larkin Seiple was ready to take a well-deserved break after wrapping the film Wolfs when director Zach Cregger sent him the script for Weapons. Larkin loved the horror mystery/thriller and that it follows the characters through the story from beginning to end. “It was the most fun I'd had reading a script for a really long time,” he says. Larkin, who is not a big horror fan, watched Cregger's previous movie, Barbarian and enjoyed his approach to the genre. “In the first five minutes, I could instantly tell that Zach knew what he was doing. I was like, if this is what he's doing with Barbarian, then I'm very curious to see what he wants to do with Weapons.” Larkin and Cregger met, immediately connected, and began shotlisting and brainstorming for Weapons. Cregger was brutal about keeping coverage shots to a minimum, so the audience only sees enough to keep the story going. This meant few establishing shots or characters driving from one destination to another. But with a short shooting schedule and hundreds of scenes in the script, it was essential to have fewer shots when possible. Crafting the look of Weapons proved challenging, due to the time of year they were shooting. Originally, the film was planned for winter, when the setting would be dreary and melancholy, but they ended up shooting during summertime in Georgia. “We ultimately wanted to find a look that kind of enhanced the scenery and the mood,” explains Larkin. “Something very melancholy, and this sense of something evil happening, and the sense of frustration.” Since the look was dark and moody, more windows were built into the sets so that diffused light could come in, which was shaped with negative fill. Night shots looked natural, with lights and a camera mounted on a condor crane in the neighborhood location. With about 249 scenes to shoot, Larkin was very involved in scheduling and location scouting for Weapons. The crew had to move extremely quickly, averaging about 6-8 scenes per day. “You're relighting and re-blocking six to eight times and trying to do it as quickly as possible,” Larkin says. “We found ways to do a lot of it in one shot or two, which affected the visual language of the movie. It was a very ambitious approach to the shoot. You're working with child actors that turn into pumpkins after six hours.” The crew had two months of prep, which Larkin used to scout and create photoboards for each location. “It was a very laborious process, but there was no problem solving on the day. Photoboarding forces you to do all the problem solving because you're there- unlike storyboarding, which is very cute,” he remarks. “Being on the ground and being on the location, you actually get to see what you're up against.” Weapons maintains constant camera movement throughout, speeding the story along and propelling each character's point of view through their ordeals during the film. But the camera never reveals anything before the time is right. “There's a maliciousness to the camera in that it does show you information but it's not gonna help you,” laughs Larkin. “It's very much trying to enhance what is going on, trying to put you in the shoes of the characters to be like, what was that? The camera ALSO wants to know what that was!” Find Larkin Seiple: http://www.larkinseiple.com/ Instagram: @larksss See Weapons currently in theaters. No matter what genre of music you listen to, if you had an ear to the radio in 1995, then you would have heard a track by Skunkhour called Up To Our Necks In It. A raw, jazzy and ultimately uplifting tune, Up To Our Necks In It opens with melancholic instrumentation before swelling into a swooning and soulful affair, embracing rapped spoken-word vocal verses balanced alongside soaring melodies and rousing arrangements. While such genre mashes might be considered the norm in the modern age of music, back then, it was a concept still very much in the experimental stage. Sometimes it worked, more often than not it didn't.But when Skunkhour released Up To Our Necks In It, the musical landscape shifted forever. Before then, it was seemingly impossible to blend sounds and instrumentalisation together and still achieve commercial success. Not that the idea of combining musical ideas was entirely new to Skunkhour, whose career to that point had been laced with songs of varying experimentation. But this time it had struck a chord with the masses and catapulted Skunkhour from the local scene into international infamy. Now, thirty years later and still rocking out, Skunkhour plan to celebrate that groundbreaking single by honouring it on a national tour through October and November. HEAVY sat down with vocalist Aya Larkin to take a trip down memory lane. We start with Up To Our Necks In It and ask if the band had any inkling that there was something special about the song when they initially wrote it."It's a good question," he measured. "It came together pretty quickly, and we did, we enjoyed it a lot as it was forming. The guitarists came into the rehearsal studio one day and said, 'oh, I dreamt this part' - and I think that was the intro section. Then he got a couple of the other riffs, because it's like a whole series of riffs that kind of just work, you know, rolling over each other. But my brother Del had had this idea in his back pocket - he's the MC. He had this idea in his back pocket of a spoken word thing that didn't rhyme, and those parts came together. They kind of grafted onto each other seamlessly. And yeah, it felt good. But it didn't…we didn't know that it would be our biggest song…"In the full interview, Aya announced the band's upcoming tour to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Up To Our Necks In It, which will take place along the east coast of Australia in October and November. He shared insights into the song's creation, emphasising its themes related to urban life and its pivotal role in the band's evolution, contrasting it with their heavier subsequent album. We talked about how that one hit song forever changed the career of Skunkhour, the title of the song and its broader meaning, what to expect from the live shows, the band's progressing sonic direction during the period Up To Our Necks In It came out, the musical climate that gave birth to Skunkhour, new music and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

SUMMARY  What do we do when God asks us to make business risks for His kingdom? This episode dives into the world of entrepreneurship through acquisition (ETA) with two incredible stories of how God leads ordinary people into extraordinary ventures. In the first half, we sit down with Matt Barnes, an ETA who acquired a laundry service, as he shares his story of how the Lord guided him into and through this journey of business ownership. In the second half, you'll hear a live recording from our annual Business for the Common Good event, where Denver Institute founder Jeff Haanen interviews another ETA, Bob Larkin. Each entrepreneur brings a unique perspective on integrating faith into business, creating caring work environments, and the risks and rewards of following God's call in the marketplace. Together, their stories highlight the importance of community, wisdom, and a vision for businesses that prioritize both employee well-being and spiritual growth. HIGHLIGHTS  On Ownership as Shepherding "We bought a small business and we're functionally the shepherds or pastors of this group of people, most of which don't find themselves in church. And we think that that's an incredible opportunity to glorify the Lord in excellence in what we do, provide a service to the front range, and then care for our employees and their families while we do it." - Matt Barnes On Risk  "....First and foremost is surrendering to the Lord's will. Treatment tech belongs to the Lord. It's very obvious to me in how he brought the business to the table, right? That's a huge blessing to look at one business and that be the business that you acquire and allow it to grow. And so every day I can look at Treatment Tech and say, this is yours, Lord. When things are going well, you're blessing us. When things are challenging, you're teaching us. And In both circumstances, you're drawing us closer to you, and I'm open to both of those." - Bob Larkin RESOURCES  Download the episode transcript here Learn more about Matt Barnes redemptive business story here from Christ At Work or this video by Aquiring Minds  Nominate a Founder or Mentor for our upcoming Denver Redemptive Lab this Fall November 12 to 14, 2025. He discusses the significant impact of environment on learning, particularly in relation to trauma and resilience. Dr. Larkin emphasizes the importance of working with children and families, advocating for trauma-informed approaches in education and mental health. He reflects on his experiences in policy development and the challenges of implementing trauma-informed care in various settings. The conversation also covers the REACH model, which focuses on routine inquiry about childhood adversity, and highlights the importance of safety and relationships in fostering well-being. https://warrenlarkinassociates.co.uk/portfolio-items/routine-enquiry-about-adversity-in-childhood-reach-programme/ He is now managing director of Warren Larkin Associates which, among other things helps organisations recognise and respond more effectively to the needs of staff and clients affected by trauma.   https://warrenlarkinassociates.co.uk/   Takeaways   Warren Larkin's educational journey highlights the impact of supportive environments. Trauma and resilience are crucial in educational settings. Early intervention is important, but prevention is even better. Policy changes often do not translate to practice changes. The REACH model emphasizes routine inquiry about childhood adversity. Creating safe environments is essential for effective trauma-informed care. Relationships are key to resilience and well-being. Social support is the most powerful factor in coping with stress. Trauma-informed care is still not well understood in many settings. There is a need for more robust evaluations of trauma-informed interventions.   Sound bites   "I left school with one O level and one CSE." "I've never looked back since leaving the NHS." The Detroit Red Wings have Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, Albert Johansson, Axel Sandin Pellikka, and others in their homegrown blue line talent - but is this enough to be competitive for the Stanley Cup, or does Steve Yzerman need to add a Gavrikov, Ekblad, or K'Andre Miller to bolster things?
