Original Airdate: November 19, 2018 It's Thanksgiving weekend in the USA. It's a warm, friendly, family holiday provided that a.) your family does not discuss politics, b.) your unhinged uncle does not drink too much and c.) the indoor deep-fryer does not burn the whole house down. Maybe you'll go to a class reunion. Those are always...terrible. Or, alternatively, maybe you'll do what you did on prom night...stay home alone. Except this time you'll have Rosa Brooks, Emily Brandwin and Maggie Feldman-Piltch to join you and they'll be talking about what's right with the world and what they're thankful for. They will, that is, just as soon as they get their own awful high school experiences off their chests. Join us! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

But we hope you will enjoy this political, pop culture -themed rerun from 2019 featuring Emily Brandwin & Philippe Reines, hosts of the podcast "Unredacted". Trump talks tough. But like most bullies, he shies away from any real fight. The problem is talking tough increases tensions and that raises the risk of accidental war (made more possible by the fact our National Security Advisor is a pyromaniac with a box of matches). But scary as all that is, more dangerous is what is happening at home--both in terms of the GOP war on our democracy, on women, on immigrants and on our every standard of decency and in terms of what has been a pretty sluggish response to it all by the Democrats in the Congress. What's next and why you should always have a basement full of non-perishable treats are what we discuss with DSR regular Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law School and our friends from the Unredacted from DSR podcast, Philippe Reines, Molly Jong-Fast and Emily Brandwin. To impeach or not to impeach -- that is the question. This week our own Joe Lockhart had a op-ed column published in The New York Times under the headline: “There’s a Prize Bigger than Impeachment” -- that followed a Times column back in March by our friend Philippe Reines co-Host of the new podcast Unredacted with Emily Brandwin and Molly Jong Fast, entitled -- “Why Impeaching Trump is ‘Worth It’”. Philippe's argument was the exact opposite of Joe's.So, they decided to debate the issue face to face on Words Matter. Katie moderates Round 1 of the Great Impeachment Debate. We can debate the policy and personal successes and failures of George H.W. Bush but there is no question that his example stands in stark contrast to that of America's current president and many in the generation of political leaders around him. The question is: Was Bush the last of a breed? Did something change a quarter century ago when he left the presidency? Did it change even earlier? And are those changes--many that have produced today's disfunction--permanent or can our system reverse them? Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law, Ed Luce of the Financial Times, attorney and former prosecutor Katie Phang and former CIA operative Emily Brandwin discuss. When Donald Trump was presented with the overwhelming evidence of Russian interference in the US elections (of which he was Exhibit A) he said, "I don't believe it." When presented with proof of the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's role in ordering the murder of Jamal Khashoggi he said, "I don't believe it." When presented with his own government's assessment of the catastrophic costs of climate change he said, you guessed it, "I don't believe it." Who needs rose-colored glasses when you have your head that far up your own narcissism? Is this a canny strategy or is Trump our Maroon-in-Chief? Kori Schake offers Henry the IVth, Part 1 as one of her Tiara-of-Optimism worthy examples. Mieke Eoyang and Emily Brandwin are not quite so sanguine but all discuss this phenomenon as well as Russia & Ukraine, Brexit, our self-inflicted border crisis and more! Trump has forged an indelible bond not with our allies nor with the American people (a majority of whom can't stand him) but with a group of really bad men worldwide who are not just evil, they're creeps. Vlad. Bibi. Duterte. And of course, now topping that list Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. Trump's defense of MBS and his indefensible crimes--from murder to torture--and his and MBS's strategy has counted on the rest of the world not caring for long about those crimes. But in Europe, governments are standing up to the Saudis and against the US position. And soon this going gap, between most of the nations of the west and Trump and his Axis of Assholes, may be on display at the upcoming G20 meeting. Kori Schake, Mieke Eoyang, Rula Jebreal and Emily Brandwin discuss what to expect from Trump, MBS and their not-so-nice friends.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/deepstateradio. Today's guest is comedian, entertainer, and former CIA agent, Emily Brandwin. No, really. This episode, if you choose to accept listening to it, will (not) self destruct in 2 minutes. But it is explosive! Emily is awesome and she has an exciting and intriguing story! She tells Jason about her comedy beginnings doing improv in dingy bars, how she found her way into the CIA, her six years working in the agency, how improv helped her in her role as an operative, what Hollywood gets right and wrong about the espionage, life after the CIA, and of course Val Kilmer. It's a super fun episode! More online: CIASpyGirl.com Twitter: @CIASpyGirl, @ThereItIsPod, @JasonFarrJokes Facebook: @ThereItIsPod
On a jam-packed show, the Cons, Chaps and Kate open with the marines who get suspended from cheating on their land navigation tests. Kenny Mayne joins the show to talk about runfreely.org, an organization helping veterans recover from their injuries to be active again. Former CIA agent Emily Brandwin also joins the show and tells Chaps all about how she got into the CIA, what a CIA agent does and a ton more.
Emily Brandwin may be one of the funniest guests we have had on the show. She is an ex-CIA agent, ex-Stand up comic, present day comedy writer. No, we are serious. You will enjoy this conversation where: We find out how a haiku landed her in the CIA? Why did she even apply in the first place? Pretexting, pretexting and more pretexting - top tips from a spy Does Chris really own a cat suit? Can he truly speak pirate? There is just so much more.... This is one to not miss! Emily, like many of you, is an avid reader and gives us an amazing list of books this month: The Things We Tell Ourselves: A Novel by Victoria Namkung Everybody’s got something by Robin Roberts Patti LuPone: A Memoir by Patti LuPone The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee by Sarah Silverman Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhoodby Trevor Noah
SPY Historian Vince Houghton sat down with former improv comedienne and CIA operations officer Emily Brandwin to discuss her career(s) and views on many things intel-related.
