Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office with a vow to eliminate illegal drugs. His “war on drugs” resulted in the brutal killing of between 12,000 and 30,000 people. Despite the international outcry and extensive media coverage of the deaths and their impact, Duterte remained popular—and untouchable – until recently. In March, he was arrested on an International Criminal Court warrant for crimes against humanity and is now sitting in a jail cell in The Hague. Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa, whose fearless reporting helped expose Duterte's brutal drug war, was targeted by Duterte – accused of everything from tax evasion to libel. In this episode of Rights & Wrongs, host Ngofeen Mputubwele speaks with Ressa and Human Rights Watch researchers about Duterte's bloody legacy, the importance of standing up to dictators, and what his arrest means for other leaders indicted by the ICC. Maria Ressa: CEO of Rappler and Nobel Peace Prize winner Carlos Conde: Senior researcher at the Asia division of Human Rights Watch Maria Elena Vignoli: Senior counsel in the International Justice Program of Human Rights Watch

Will this endorsement give these two candidates a much-needed push ahead of the senatorial election?
A conversation with Atty Dino de Leon.
On March 11, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested by Interpol on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and transferred to The Hague in the Netherlands to stand trial. The former Philippine leader is accused of crimes against humanity for his deadly war on drugs. Human rights groups say his policies left tens of thousands of Filipino men dead, many of them from poor backgrounds with no proven connections to drug use. But despite these accusations, many Filipinos continue to support Duterte and denounce a worsening security situation, particularly in the capital Manila. Meanwhile, relatives of victims are demanding justice. FRANCE 24's correspondents Alexis Bregere, Mélodie Sforza and Jan Camenzind Broomby report.

On Filipino politics and geopolitics. Renowned public intellectual Walden Bello talks to Alex and contributing editor Lee Jones about his recently published memoirs, former president Rodrigo Duterte's arrest, warring political dynasties and more. How has Walden been involved with the social-democratic party Akbayan? What does China's rise mean for developing countries and the global South? With four episodes on tariffs this month, the podcast has already broken its monthly episode record. Nevertheless, news is also happening elsewhere, and for the past few months a number of interesting stories emerged in Southeast Asia. Then, given that Southeast Asian economies are some of the most directly affected by Trump's tariff policies, the need for a conversation centred on Southeast Asia only increased, starting with how the US is perceived and the assessments being made regarding the region's strategic trajectory. To discuss all this and more, Aaron Connolly returns to the podcast. Aaron is Asia Diplomatic Editor and Singapore Bureau Chief at The Economist, having joined the newspaper from the International Institute of Strategic Studies where he was working the last time he appeared on the podcast. Aaron offers both a big picture strategic landscape of the region, and broad and deep knowledge of details, both political and economic. In addition to Trump and tariffs, Darren and Aaron discuss Indonesia's recent military reforms and other policies of the Prabowo administration, Thailand's deportation of Uighurs to China, and the arrest of former Philippines president Duterte. Australia in the World is written, hosted, and produced by Darren Lim, with research and editing this episode by Hannah Nelson and theme music composed by Rory Stenning. With the recent arrest of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte for crimes against humanity, a spotlight is again on actions taken during his presidency. Even years after Duterte declared his war on drugs, the reverberations continue to tear through the country. The loved ones of those killed are still left seeking justice and the extra-judicial killings, commonly called EJKs, that defined Duterte's war continue to sow fear amongst the people.Today on The Sunday Story, we share an episode that originally aired last year with reporter Emily Feng. She traveled to the Philippines to understand the aftermath of Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
