Two historic events happened in the last week and this week's ‘Mehdi Unfiltered' covered both of them. On the international front…The International Court of Justice, the ICJ, issued a landmark 83-page opinion on Friday agreeing with the decades-long assertions from Palestinians that Israel's occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is unlawful and should come to an end “as rapidly as possible”. Award-winning journalist and Zeteo contributor Rula Jebreal joins Mehdi to talk about what the historic decision means, what it could lead to, and shares some strong opinions about Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. On the domestic front…For the first time since 1968, a sitting U.S. president decided not to run for re-election. But how will Vice President Kamala Harris fare against Donald Trump? And how do progressive Members of Congress feel about Biden's decision to bow out of the race? Mehdi spoke to Congressman Ro Khanna of California - who also discusses why he won't be attending Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to Congress on Wednesday.PLUS! JOIN ZETEO TOMORROW DURING NETANYAHU'S SPEECH TO CONGRESSMehdi and Zeteo's new political correspondent, Prem Thakker, will go LIVE on Substack Chats tomorrow, July 24th, at 10:30am reporting on the historic and controversial speech from the Israeli prime minister. Prem will be on Capitol Hill, both outside with protestors and inside with members of Congress, and chatting live during Netanyahu's speech at 2pm. Over the past few years, Israel's ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtually everywhere in the world -- except the United States. The Occupation of the American Mind takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception, zeroing in on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S. Narrated by Roger Waters and featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. media culture, the film explores how the Israeli government, the U.S. government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel's favor. From the U.S.-based public relations campaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today, the film provides a sweeping analysis of Israel's decades-long battle for the hearts, minds, and tax dollars of the American people in the face of widening international condemnation of its increasingly right-wing policies. Narrated by Roger Waters / Featuring Amira Hass, M.J. Rosenberg, Stephen M. Walt, Noam Chomsky, Rula Jebreal, Henry Siegman, Rashid Khalidi, Rami Khouri, Yousef Munayyer, Norman Finkelstein, Max Blumenthal, Phyllis Bennis, Norman Solomon, Mark Crispin Miller, Peter Hart, and Sut Jhally.

These days, I've been thinking a lot about dreams. When I was growing up in Bangladesh in the 1980's, my biggest dream was to get Bollywood but lucky for everyone, especially my parents, I found and settled on my true passion pretty early on-- journalism and writing--by my senior year of high school. That being said, I never imagined any kind of career or even a cameo in American media. I first came to the States to go to college in 1998 at the University of Virginia (UVA) and the number of people who looked like me on TV back then compared to the diversity you see on-air now, has barely changed. Don't believe me? Look at the numbers. The US population might be changing, but American newsrooms aren't reflecting that diversity. It's a just a fact. According The Status Of Women In The United States Media 2017 report, not only is 79% of people working in the publishing industry white, only 16.6% of newspaper staff are people of color. The report also found that 37 percent of news articles and opinion pieces regarding reproductive rights and related issues were written by women. In a nutshell, when newsrooms and the media aren't diverse, crucial perspectives and facts get missed. My point is that there are so few women of color in the news as anchors, commentators, reporters, on-air talent basically, media personalities in American media that even when you make it from the control room to the Green room, you'll be lucky if you find anyone else that looks like you. Which is what makes our guest today even more amazing. How does one become an unapologetic woman of color in the media and the world? Lucky for us, we have Rula Jebreal here today to ask her exactly that.

E in politica? In politica vince l’opportunismo, di donne è meglio parlarne solo l’otto marzo. In questa puntata di Kevlar analizziamo con l’aiuto di Jennifer Guerra il rapporto tra mondo dell’informazione italiana e le donne .

The world of journalism faces an existential crisis . Attacks on the press as "the enemy of the people" by the president of the United States and other authoritarian leaders is just the beginning. Bombs sent to CNN, reporters spat on at political rallies, and the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi make the prima facie case. Award-winning international journalist and foreign policy analyst Rula Jebreal, comes to this discussion with a unique perspective. Having covered stories and worked in Italy, the US, and the Middle East, she sees the global dimensions of the issues. Perhaps most significantly, she secretly conducted one of the last interviews with Jamal Khashoggi. In that interview Khashoggi talks about what it might take for the US to actually look objectively at Saudi Arabia. But this would only happen, he believed, in the face of a serious crisis. Little did he know that his brutal murder would be that crisis. My WhoWhatWhy.org interview with Rula Jebreal.

This week feels like the culmination of two years of attacks on journalism — including President Donald Trump's ongoing denunciations of the press as “the enemy of the people,” the bombs sent to CNN along with other targets of Trump's verbal venom, and more revelations about the horrifying murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi, who feared for his life in the months leading up to his killing, spoke about much of this with international journalist Rula Jebreal in one of his last interviews. She is Jeff Schechtman's guest on this week's WhoWhatWhy podcast. Jebreal talks about Khashoggi's views on the Saudi regime of Mohammed bin Salman — views that were, by any objective standard, nuanced and measured. He told Jebreal, in that last interview, that he was not seeking the overthrow of the bin Salman regime, but its reform. Jebreal explains how mournful Khashoggi was that he had tried, in vain, to foster the reformist impulses of the young crown prince.   Khashoggi saw the crown prince as a deeply divided figure: While bin Salman sought to win accolades as a reformer, he also wanted to rule as his grandfather and great-grandfather had — as a tribal leader of unquestioned authority. It was Khashoggi's exposure of bin Salman as a ruler trying to have it both ways that Jebreal thinks most angered him. She says that Khashoggi was murdered “for the crime of having an opinion.”   Jebreal shares with Schechtman what else she learned from Khashoggi, who was her friend. She talks passionately of Khashoggi's views on the Saudi-led, US-supported war in Yemen; the role of journalism in how Americans view the Saudis; and how shocking it is that defense of the Saudi regime is still permissible in polite society.   She tells Schechtman that Khashoggi thought it would probably take a major crisis to change US policy toward Saudi Arabia. What he didn't know was that his murder might be the trigger for that crisis.

Then we have "Thanks Obama" author David Litt share what it was like working at his dream job as a speech writer in The White House during the Obama years. And finally, as part of our “Flip that Seat” series, we interview veteran and West Virginia State Senator Richard Ojeda, who once survived a brutal beating two days before his primary, and recovered to become a Democratic State Senator in the heart of Trump country and is now on the warpath to represent his district in Washington. Enjoy!
