It's that special time, where Erika and Paul dive into an 80s comedy! This week, they're talking about the Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase vehicle Spies Like Us…and you might think you can guess how they'll feel about it, but this is a film that defies (some) expectations. This week on the Exciting & New podcast, Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dan back on the podcast as they discuss the 1985 comedy Spies Like Us. As we roll into the Summer of Chase, we get our first look at Prime Chevy along with Cuck Dan. Honestly how odd is it to cast your wife in a movie you wrote, but have her hooking up with your Co-Star. Weird, right? I guess even in the movie world it seemed odd to have Donna Dixon hooking up with a nerd like Dan Aykroyd. Anyway, there are some Russian in this one but the American turn out to be the bad guys. Just like last week, there was a difference of opinions when it came to the scores for this movie, but more toward the positive side. Enjoy the podcast.
Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dan back on the podcast as they discuss what they were up to this last week. Spies Like Us is coming this Wednesday.
Grab your dickfers and join us as we cover one of our oldest movies yet! Would they have actually been good if not for Fitz-Hume? Just how many cameos does this film contain? Can Kayla actually get Millbarge's name right? Check it out now!

Episode 320: “Spies Like Us” (1985): Movie Review This week, Chris and Derek go back in time to 1985 to review the John Landis comedy “Spies Like Us” starring Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd. The show before the Oscars. I've been watching all the movies. Anora and The Substance are pretty good HOWEVER, if we're comparing them to The Godfather or Titanic or Forrest Gump -- they stink! You know how angry I get about this - so it's that time of the year. We'll see. And of course watch my companion piece where we make our selections from the Comedy Cellar on YouTube. Otherwise, this week - the big awful showing at the University with all the professors in one room greeting each other, "professor, professor, professor" - like in Spies Like Us, "doctor, doctor, doctor". Epic. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” – and while many of the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” have gone on to achieve remarkable careers, few have had as fascinating a journey as Dan Aykroyd's. As the youngest member of the 1975 original cast, Aykroyd quickly became known for his iconic sketches, including parodies of Julia Child and Richard Nixon, the beloved “Two Wild and Crazy Guys,” and the absurd “Bass-o-Matic.” His sketch “The Blues Brothers” not only became a cultural touchstone, but evolved into successful feature films and a live musical act. Aykroyd's talents also extend to behind the camera, as he wrote and starred in the comedy classics “Dragnet,” “Coneheads,” “Spies Like Us” and “Ghostbusters.” Aykroyd's career has earned him numerous accolades, including an Emmy Award and Grammy and Academy Award nominations. He is also an entrepreneur and co-founder of the House of Blues music venues and Crystal Head Vodka. In this conversation, host Alec Baldwin speaks with Aykroyd about the early days of “SNL,” the evolution of his career into music and dramatic roles, and how his upbringing helped shape the creation of “Ghostbusters.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A Schwarzenegger-style action movie with more goofiness and fewer steroids. Fictional countries are at odds. One of them hires the Megaforce, a band of skilled, highly-armed mercenaries to handle their dirty work for them. Plans go awry. The Expendables meets Spies Like Us. Silly, unrealistic effects, like a flying motorcycle with 7" wings with no more flight controls than one man's hopes and dreams. Sweet dune buggies. Repurposed Death Cycles from Deathsport. More rockets than an eight-year-old boy could dream of. The old guy from Knight Rider. What more could you ask for? A charming offering from the 80s. But what is intentionally campy or did it just miss the mark on a real action movie? Who knows? Doesn't matter anyway. The good guys win, even in the 80s. 'Merica. Megaforce Final Grades Steve: An above average addition to the subgenre. Dad jokes abound. Sweet dune buggies. 3/5 Brandon These silly 80s goofball action movies are finding a special place in this movie watcher's heart. This one was a little more family-friendly than the Roger Corman flicks of a similar style, meaning...less boobs. The motorcycles are painted like tigers. 3.57/5 Cocktail of the Week: The Freedom Martini 2 oz Vodka 1/2 oz Raspberry Liqueur 1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice Shake ingredients in a martini shaker. Strain into frosted martini glasses. Cocktail Grade: A fine little martini option. Good flavors, not too sweet. Maybe a hint of caramel on the back end, unless that's just the effect of using a 20-year-old bottle of liqueur? ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

Virigina Hall studied at Radcliffe College and Barnard College (the women's colleges of Harvard and Columbia) and spoke three languages. She served as a consular clerk in Poland and Turkey, where a hunting accident required an amputation below the knee.Noor Inayat Kahn studied child psychology at the Sorbonne and music at the Paris Conservatory. The daughter of Sufi Muslims, she was described as quiet, shy, sensitive, and dreamy.Josephine Baker was an American-born French dancer, singer and actress and the first Black woman to star in a major motion picture. She was a school drop out who ascended to international stardom in France and befriended the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso.A studious amputee, a shy artist, and a flamboyant entertainer. Who also happened to be secret agents during World War II and integral to the Resistance movement against the Axis powers. Could these women, who confronted sexism, ableism, racism, who refused to speak under Nazi interrogation and bamboozled German officials while extracting secrets also convince West Texas high school students that history is not about “the dead, old and irrelevant.” It was a mission two teachers chose to accept when they also accepted a $10,000 Fund for Teachers grant.Today we're learning from Renee Parson and Cory Cason, history teachers at Alpine High School in Alpine, Texas, set in the high plateau of the Chihuahuan Desert between the Glass and Davis Mountain Ranges. When not in adjoining classrooms, these women are coaching track and field, sponsoring History Club and supporting students involved in Future Farmers of America and UIL academic contests, among other activities. While the small school environment is rich with opportunities, exposure to the world beyond Brewster County – not so much. Cory and Renee leveraged their interest in female spies to craft a fellowship that researched Virginia Hall, Noor Inayat Khan and Josephine Baker throughout Europe to expand students' mindset of what can be accomplished when ordinary people employ the courage to defy rigid societal norms in the name of humanity and justice.

It's time for one of Katie's favorite episodes, which marks the first time B613 is mentioned. Naturally this leads to a big discussion about ghosts and Monica Lewinsky's purse line. Then, Guillermo explains what it's like to use so many guns on set. And Katie points out two flaws in her acting that made it to the final version of the episode. Buckle in, this episode takes Katie & Guillermo on quite a... spin.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Set against the backdrop of heightened Cold War tensions, this 80s flick introduces us to two bumbling government employees unwittingly thrust into the world of international espionage. Tasked with a decoy mission to distract attention from a genuine covert operation, the duo becomes entangled in a web of conspiracies, encounters with KGB agents, and a journey that takes them from the treacherous terrains of Afghanistan to the frigid landscapes of the Soviet Union. It not only capitalizes on the chemistry between its lead actors but also serves as a parody of spy movie tropes prevalent in the '80s. Cleverly satirizing the political climate of its time, it offered a light-hearted take on the Cold War anxieties that gripped the world. By infusing humor into the serious business of espionage, the film manages to lampoon both political posturing and the conventions of the spy genre itself. So start studying for the foreign service exam, pull out your book on Colloquial Russian, and meet us at the Ace Tomato Company as Tim Williams and guest co-host, Laramy Wells from "Moving Panels" Podcast to discuss “Spies Like Us” from 1985 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Chevy Chase's co-worker asks him if he's going to take the Foreign Service Board Exam and explains "it's supposed to be all new this year. There will be 500 questions in two hours." This means that an exam taker would have to answer a question at least every 14.4 seconds. Chevy Chase's character tells the test administrator, played by Frank Oz, that he's late because he was at the reading of a will. In "Knives Out" (2019), Oz plays a lawyer reading a will. Chevy Chase's most successful film at the North American box office in 1985. It grossed $60 million domestically, while his other pictures Fletch (1985) and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) grossed $50 million and $49 million respectively. Ironically the latter two less financially successful films inspired sequels while there never was a sequel to this film. It's the end of 1985, and in many ways the end cap on a year of realignment for the former Beatles. While the successes of the Spies Like Us single and his lauded Live Aid performance kept Paul McCartney a part of the cultural conversation, Macca's critical and commercial wounds from 1984's Broadstreet fiasco remained. Ringo Starr and George Harrison's continued musical silence left only Julian Lennon - still riding high on the success of 1984's Valotte - standing to carry the torch of Beatles-related relevance as the back half of the decade approached. Yoko Ono's Starpeace LP too faltered commercially, despite the continued goodwill John's widow enjoyed since that fateful day in 1980. Of course, the latter half of the 80s would see a number of tables turn, and further developments within the legacy of the Beatles... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's the fall of 1985 and new music from the three remaining former Beatles abounds! First up, in their first joint concert appearance together since the Concert for Bangladesh over a decade prior, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are once again singing together on stage -- this time in support of rockabilly legend and founding rock and roll pioneer Carl Perkins. In a new special titled Carl Perkins & Friends, the two fabs are on hand alongside other legendary talents such as Eric Clapton, Dave Edmonds and more, to pay homage to the man who inspired an entire generation. Meanwhile, on the original music front, Paul McCartney's latest single release, a film soundtrack theme titled Spies Like Us, marks Macca's first new release since the disastrous Give My Regards to Broadstreet film the previous year. And a certified hit was most certainly welcome news to Macca's weary ears... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of Chatter, a podcast hosted by David Priess and Shane Harris that features in-depth discussions with fascinating people at the creative edges of national security, Harris and Priess speak jointly with former intelligence officer, prominent yacht-watcher and book author Alex Finley. They talk about her career in the CIA's Directorate of Operations (which became the National Clandestine Service during her tenure there), her keen observation and analysis of Russian oligarchs' mega-yachts (which brought her onto cable news networks this spring after several countries started to seize the ships in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine), and her experience writing a series of spy satire novels (which take espionage absurdity to a new level). The three of them also kicked around views on a range of spy satire films, from 1985's Spies Like Us to the puppet-centric Team America to Spy with Melissa McCarthy.
