GUY DAVIS and FABRIZIO POGGI pay homage to the legendary blues duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee on their latest release Sonny & Brownies Last Train on MC Records. The deep, acoustic blues sessions for the album took place in Milan Italy and were recorded live in the studio. The result captured the special musical connection that “The Ambassador of the Blues" and this award winning international harmonica sensation possess from the years of playing and recording together. THE AFFRILACHIAN POETS have been writing together, defying the persistent stereotype of a racially homogenized rural region of Appalachia since 1991. The term "Affrilachia" was originally coined by Frank X Walker who was named the youngest Poet Laureate of Kentucky in 2013. Through their writing and the very existence of their enclave, the Affrilachian Poets continue to reveal relationships that link identity to familial roots, socio-economic stratification and cultural influence, and an inherent connection to the land. An all-star team of poets lead by Frank X and Bianca Spriggs will read and discuss their poetry, the 25th Anniversary of the group and the release of the Black Bone Anthology. Reknown Louisville jazz pianist Harry Pickens will appear as a special guest to back the poets readings. WoodSongs Kid: Zakia Holland-Tucker is lives in Richmond, Kentucky and attends Madison Central High School. She is one of newest members of the Affrilachian Poets.

For musicians Guy Davis and Fabrizio Poggi, two of those inspirations are bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Earlier in 2017, they released a tribute album, 'Sonny and Brownie's Last Train.' Guy Davis explains the concept of the recording: "Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry were two musicians whose work will not be surpassed, let alone improved on. This musical opus, was produced by Fabrizio Poggi. It features our combined musical talents, and is not meant to compete with the originals. It's meant to be a love letter to Brownie and Sonny signed by the both of us. They were two of my favorites."In March 2017, Davis and Poggi came to Beehive Productions studio in Saranac Lake, NY for an exclusive in-studio performance and to share their tribute to Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.

I’ve got an old school blues cover of Libba Cotten by Guy Davis and Fabrizio Poggi, honky-tonk from Matt Urmy, more country from that Jason Eady album, a hand clapper from Valerie June, rock & roll from Killbuck and the new string band album from Joseph Huber. "Ep349 For people who are train wreckers" originated from Americana Music Show.
A photograph taken around 1960 appeared recently at Ebony magazine's website featuring renowned actors and activists Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee with their three kids at an anti-war protest. One of those kids – about six years old – is Guy Davis. He made the cardboard signs that the family is carrying. Guy Davis, now 64 years old, still has a lot to say as one of America's finest blues musician and folk singers. Traditional acoustic blues is arguably the bedrock of American popular music, but even in today's roots revival, the legacy of artists like Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Mississippi John Hurt – takes a bit of a backseat. We'd have to talk about Taj Mahal and Corey Harris. I had Rory Block on this show some time ago. Ben Harper and Keb Mo keep traditional blues in their mix. Less celebrated than he should be is Guy Davis. His most recent album is a duo recording with Italian harmonica master Fabrizio Poggi on an album-length tribute to Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee. In our conversation, Davis talks about growing up at the epicenter of New York culture and how the ethos of engagement he learned from his parents is translating to the here and now.
