Kris Schultz - From Merch Slinger to Bonafide Singer!

To the best of my knowledge, Kris Schultz is the second“merch slinger” I've met that went on to pursue a lyrical life as a troubadour in her own right.  My first experience was with Texas songwriter Kayla Ray as she first visited KC slinging merch for Jason Eady.  I love Kris' trajectory…. check this out.  Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Kris was obsessed at an early age with the country songs of heartbreak and loss on the jukebox at a bar she visited regularly with her parents.  At an early age, she showed promise in several sports, especially the field part of track and field eventually accepted a scholarship to throw Javelin at Kansas State University, where she majored in Radio/Television Journalism.  While competing in the Texas Relays during her college career, she fell in love with Austin, TX.  And soon moved there with only a box of books & CDs, a small stereo, and a bag of clothes.  She walked into the city-ran Austin Music Network TV channel, asked for an internship, and soon was spending her days proof-checking videos of local music and taking in every note. But she still hadn't thought of playing music herself. After years assisting musicians as merch slinger, roadmanager and van driver, but never playing or singing herself, Kris eventually  acquired a guitar and began writing songs. She released her full-length album, Standard Issue Heart, inOctober 2021, has played such legendary venues as The Saxon Pub and Cactus Café in Texas, toured in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeastern US, has been featured in the live performance series “Songs In Places.”  Kris recently found herself in the Heartland and we connected to make an appearance on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show happen.   Enjoy this performance and conversation with Austin transplant Kris Schultz.  Tasty Brew Music Radio Show "Showcasing the best of Americana/Roots Music in andfrom the Heartland!”Fridays 10 AM to Noon CST on 90.1FM KKFI Kansas CityCommunity Radio !!Since 2010, spinning a “tasty brew” of Americana/Bluegrass/Country/Roots Music… empowering the art of the song! All The Lilacs In Ohio". Su versión junto a Rodney Crowell de "I Ain’t Living Long Like This" es soberbia. On Top Of The World”. Escuchar audio

Escuchar audio

My friend Courtney Patton is a storyteller. She’s also a mother, a wife, a producer, a singer, a songwriter, a tour-van driver and a musician- as well as a world-traveler when she’s out on tour throughout the continental U.S., Canada and Europe. In a musical era in which clichés and bravado are the norm, Courtney is far more brave in peeling back highly personal and emotional open-book songs delivering them with sensitivity and sentiment Following her previous solo albums, Triggering a Flood (2013) and So This Is Life (2015), and her acoustic collaborative project with her husband and fellow Texas troubadour Jason Eady, Something Together, (2017), Patton has drawn on true life day-to-day autobiographical life experiences released a third album, What It’s Like To Fly Alone. As you will hear in this recent conversation I had with Courtney on my radio show, she is on the road again after spending a very challenging, but productive year in quarantine, raising her two children while co-founding a new non profit during a pandemic. Hmmm…that sounds familiar. The Sequestered Songwriters Relief Fund was an idea born out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mission of the Sequestered Songwriters Relief Fund is to… Provide emergency relief funds for full-time Americana musicians in need. A group of songwriter friends gathered virtually to participate in an online guitar pull to celebrate Merle Haggard on his birthday. The following week, John Prine passed, and the group again gathered virtually to pay tribute to him. None of the songwriters wanted to stop, and the fans were just as excited, so the weekly tributes continued. Fans started asking about how they could financially support the endeavor. As none of the musicians wanted any kind of compensation for the amount of fun they were having online each week, the idea to start a nonprofit that would benefit songwriters in future financial crisis seemed like the perfect solution. Next up…the Sequestered Songwriters Festival to be held on October 17, 2021 in Justin, Texas. Enjoy my conversation with my friend, Courtney Patton!

Alright folks, let’s talk about cutting teeth. This weeks guest is literally the first guy I cut my teeth with playing country music. It’s my ol pal Jason Eady.

Solo artist. Frontman. Behind-the-scenes songwriter. For more than a decade, Adam Hood has left his mark both onstage and in the writing room, carving out a southern sound that mixes equal parts country, soul and American roots music. It's a sound that began shape in Opelika, Alabama. Raised by working-class parents, Hood started playing hometown shows as a 16 year-old, landing a weekly residency at a local restaurant. He'd perform there every Friday and Saturday night, filling his set list with songs by John Hiatt, Hank Williams Jr, and Vince Gill. As the years progressed, the gigs continued — not only in his home state, but across the entire country. Eventually even landing himself a three-year nationwide tour opening for Leon Russell. These days, though, Hood is no longer just putting his own stamp on the songs of chart-topping country stars. Instead, many of those acts -- including Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert, Anderson East, Josh Abbott Band, Lee Ann Womack & Brent Cobb -- are playing his songs. In 2016, Hood signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Nashville and GRAMMY Award-winning producer Dave Cobb's Low Country Sound. All while remaining adamantly focused on his own career, playing around 100 shows annually promoting third solo release, Welcome to the Big World, and now his newest release, Somewhere in Between. A showcase for both his frontman abilities and songwriting chops, Somewhere in Between shines a light on Hood's strength as a live performer. He recorded most of the album live at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios over two quick days. Teaming up with friend and producer Oran Thornton (Miranda Lambert's Revolution, Angaleena Presley's Wrangled) their goal was to create something that reflected the raw, real sound of his concerts, where overdubs and unlimited takes are never an option. The result is a record that reflects Hood's working-class roots, mixing the upbeat thrill of his roadhouse roots-rock songs with the contemplative, stripped-down sway of his country ballads. Joining him in the studio were guitarist Pat McLaughlin, bassist Lex Price, and drummer Jerry Roe. All of whom captured their parts in just a handful of live takes while Hood simultaneously tracked his vocals. Stripped free of studio trickery and lushly layered arrangements, Somewhere in Between is an honest, story-driven record. One that's both relatable and deeply autobiographical, with Hood writing or co-writing ten of the record's eleven tracks, alongside friends like McLaughlin, Brent Cobb -- who also appears on the electrified "She Don't Love Me" -- Josh Abbott, Jason Eady, and plenty of others. Somewhere in Between is an album that finally finds Hood telling his own story. A dedicated family man, he wrote "Locomotive" — a heartland anthem, full of Telecaster twang and sunny swagger — after watching his young daughter develop her motor skills while playing with a set of blocks. Balancing his life as a relentless road-warrior, Hood penned highway ballad "Downturn" about a life filled with wanderlust and long drives from gig to gig. As a blue-collar songwriter, Hood shines a light on everyday experiences — from family and friends to the thrill of Friday nights. Partly because he's stuck to his roots. The native Alabaman still lives in the Yellowhammer State and celebrates America's rural pockets with songs like "Keeping Me Here" and "Real Small Town," two songs filled with images of main streets, open landscapes, hard times, and good people. "It's southern music," he says, grouping Somewhere in Between's wide range of music under an appropriate banner. "That's what it represents: the soulful side of southern music, the country side of southern music, the genuineness of southern culture, and the way I grew up. One of the t-shirts I sell at every show simply says ‘Southern Songs,' and It's a good summary of what I do. It's what I've always done."

DittyTV's Insights | Artist Interviews

On his last two albums, Jason Eady earned major acclaim for his ahead-of-the- curve take on classic country, a bold departure from his earlier excursions into blues-infused Americana. The Mississippi-bred singer/guitarist merges his distinct sensibilities into a stripped-down, roots- oriented sound that starkly showcases the gritty elegance of his songwriting. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

In this interview with singer-songwriter Jason Eady, we once again really demonstrate why conversations we have on this podcast with these artists are so interesting.  We end up learning things about the artist and their lives that are just down right fascinating. For example, fans of Eady’s music already appreciate his unique approach to songwriting but, were they aware that before he became a professional musician he was involved in clandestine and secret operations as a linguist for the military?  No joke… While we get into his music a little later in the interview, initially we visit about his path to the stage as a musician and singer-songwriter which started when he was quite young.  He had the dream to be a country music star so as soon as he’d graduated high school, he moved to Music City.  While the Nashville excursion ultimately didn’t pan out as he’d hoped, it was during his time there that he decided to go to an Air Force recruiting office and soon found himself as a member of the military.  Therefore, he put his musical aspirations on hold and spent 6 years in the Air Force acting as a linguist and translator focusing on speaking Arabic. Upon his return to civilian life he wound up working a day job in Ft. Worth, TX; but the music bug started gnawing at him again.  Soon he was singing his own songs at open mic nights and developing a loyal following.  When a chance for a big promotion came up, he realized it was a fork in the road of his life.  He could either take the promotion and give up on the music, OR, he could take a leap of faith and start really focusing on a career in music.  Luckily for his fans, he chose the second option and the rest is history. Since making that fateful decision, he’s released multiple projects to great critical acclaim and has worked regularly with now longtime collaborator, Kevin Welch, and even had superstars like Vince Gill sing on his records! Jason’s latest record is called “I Travel On” and is available by clicking HERE. I’ll let the rest of the episode’s conversation speak for itself! Sit back and enjoy the episode!
