In this week's episode, Paul Andrews dives into a fundamental topic for guitar beginners: what sets a riff, a lick, and a solo apart? Understanding these building blocks is essential for learning songs, improving improvisation, and practicing with intention.Key Topics CoveredBeginner Guitar Academy Updates"Wonderful Tonight" Song Study is being re-released on Friday, February 13th, just in time for Valentine's Day. The updated lesson will have in-depth breakdowns of lead and rhythm parts, along with play-along tracks featuring scrolling tabs.February's Live Member Q&A is set for Monday, February 23rd at 9 pm GMT / 4 pm EST / 1 pm PST. Submit questions ahead of time if you can't attend live—recordings will be available for all members. What is a Riff?A riff is a repeating, recognizable musical idea and often forms the backbone or foundation of a song.Iconic examples: "Smoke on the Water," "Sunshine of Your Love."Riffs repeat often, sync with rhythm & groove, and are usually played the same way every time.If you're a BGA member, check the riff section for 75+ riffs and the workshop section for themed riff collections. What is a Lick?A lick is a short, reusable musical phrase, like a "word" you can insert into solos or different playing contexts.Licks are flexible and show up in various songs and keys. Blues and rock are full of classic licks recycled by greats like B.B. King, Albert King, and Joe Bonamassa.Key traits: short, flexible, easy to move around.Find blues licks and "Quick Licks" lessons inside the Academy. What is a Solo?A solo is a longer musical statement, usually constructed from multiple licks.Great solos are like stories, with phrases, space, dynamics, and emotion (think David Gilmour's "Comfortably Numb").Solos aren't just fast runs—they use repetition, variation, and phrasing.BGA members can check out the workshop "Learn to Play 5 Beginner Guitar Solos" for a progressive solo study. How Do They Work Together?Riff = song identity.Licks = your vocabulary.Solos = arranging licks into a musical story. Most beginners miss the "lick" step when trying to solo. Learning licks is crucial.Common Beginner MistakesCalling everything a solo.
Episode #311 of Blues From The Ouse delivers two hours of carefully curated blues, spanning brand-new releases, deep roots classics, powerful themes and listener-selected favourites. We open the show with fresh blues releases, featuring new music from Selwyn Birchwood, Robert John & The Wreck, Alex Lopez, and Ally Venable, including a Grammy-timed re-release with Buddy Guy. Expect modern electric swamp blues, retro revival sounds and blues-rock that bends the rules just enough. The first themed set, “The Legal Blues”, explores songs of judges, juries, prisons and punishment. From Furry Lewis and Bukka White's Parchman Farm Blues to Joe Bonamassa's cinematic re-working of Prisoner and Sonny Boy Williamson II's courtroom classic Your Funeral And My Trial, this is blues born from hard time and harder truths.Next, “Sight Unseen” shines a light on musicians who lost their sight but sharpened their sound. Featuring Ray Charles, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Sonny Terry, and Jeff Healey, this set celebrates artists whose hearing, feel and phrasing changed the shape of blues music forever. The second hour is all about listener requests, digging deep beyond algorithm playlists. Tracks come from Chicago Bob and the Blues Squad, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Hitman Blues Band, Canyon Lights, Sherman Robertson, The Zac Schulze Gang, and more — plus the latest Blues From The Ouse Gig Round-Up, highlighting upcoming UK blues shows and festivals. We wind the night down with The Great Divide, tracing the crossover between blues and country with The Allman Brothers Band, Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Mudcrutch, and Area Code 615.If you love modern blues, classic blues, UK blues radio, deep themes, and music with a story to tell, this episode is for you.#311 Blues From The Ouse Playlist:Blues From The Ouse - Show Intro - 00:00:00Selwyn Birchwood - The Church Of Electric Swamp Funkin' Blues - 00:02:05Robert Jon & The Wreck - Old Man - 00:10:02Alex Lopez - Your Lovin' - 00:13:08Ally Venable Band (ft. This week, we're scratching The Itch to officially close out 2025! We've got reports on a pair of holiday shows, because of course 'twas the season to see concerts. First, KC and Dan saw Itch guest and arguably the world's greatest living blues rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa at Thanksgiving. Then, the entire crew (plus Dan's family!) continues our tradition of seeing our boys in Nonpoint in any state but our own, checking out their Nu Metal New Year tour with fellow Itch guests Boy Hits Car and Aurorawave in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were some wildly different experiences, but both very much worthwhile! Enjoy. Listen to The Itch Rock Radio Show Rock with us every Sunday night from 6-9pm CST on KCLC-FM in St. Louis. S9E3 went out live from the TSORR Studio on Myoli Beach on 15 January 2026 at 19h00 on Bulldogs Radio. It was a tough show; you shouldn't notice listening to the podcast, but it was a technical challenge with the station cutting out every couple of minutes and massive latency of 3-5 minutes. Rock and Metal Time Machine continues to get great support on the show, and the momentum is building on the Diabolical Challenge. We're now taking votes on the Story of Rock and Roll Central poll and on the TSORR Facebook page. On this episode, we got our third album for the playoff in two weeks, Guns N' Roses beat out Metallica, ACDC, and Def Leppard. They'll meet Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, and whoever wins next week. The challenge played out after Immortals about two-thirds of the way through the show. There's not a lot of new stuff out, so we're still listening to Alter Bridge and Megadeth from last week. Please help me have a great year on The Story of Rock and Roll by sharing the links and sharing the show. It's the 10th anniversary of the book, The Story of Rock and Roll. You can get that on Kindle, via Amazon. Hello friends! What a year. For our 2025 year in review, "How Did I Get Here?" teams up with the power trio from the "Hey, Good For You!" podcast - bass players, Rachel Loy, Alison Prestwood, and Harmoni Kelley (who have collectively played with Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Peter Frampton, Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Joe Bonamassa, Wynonna Judd, Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, and many more) to discuss our 2025. We get into everything from our personal highs and lows, some of our favorite music, movies, shows, and books, things we learned, and there's a lot of laughter. I am a big fan of these women and their awesome podcast, "Hey, Good For You!" which you can find on Apple, Spotify or wherever you pod. I hope you all have a safe and happy new year. See you in 2026! Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Send someone the gift of Johnny with Cameo. If you feel so inclined. This week, Mark and Alan take a look back at 2025 and reveal their favorite concert, album, and song of the year—and then turn the spotlight over to our listeners' picks. Alan reviews shows by Susanna Hoffs and Joe Bonamassa, and recaps new documentaries about Counting Crows and Taylor Swift. In music news, the members of Jane's Addiction apologize to each other and formally break up, Cher gives a controversial performance on SNL, and James Hetfield gets in the holiday spirit. The new episode of Blues is the Truth is up now and it is another one of those shows that just feels good to put together and even better to listen back to. Hosted by Ian McHugh, this week is all about letting the music do its thing, with the regular features ticking along and plenty of moments that stop you in your tracks. There is a brilliant spread of music this time from Tad Robinson, Emma Wilson, The Greaseland All Stars, Monster Mike Welch, Buddy Whittington, Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa, Del Bromham, Tim Aves and Wolfpack, The Hoax, Chad Strenz, The Vibrationists, The Notting Hillbillies, Guitar Shorty, John Lee Hooker, Rock Candy Funk Party, Little Walter, Royal Enfield, Mary Lane, Junior Wells, Charlie Musselwhite, Steve Howell and the Mighty Men, Angela Strehli, Chuck Jackson's Big Bad Blues Band and Lil' Red and the Rooster. It is a mix that moves easily between roots, soul, grit and groove, with every track chosen for a reason. If you fancy a couple of hours in good company with some great music, this one is well worth your time. Stick it on, turn it up a little and enjoy.

It is with heavy hearts that we present this week's episode as a tribute to Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley. The rock 'n' roll icon, legendary guitar god, and former KISS guitarist, passed away on October 16, 2025, after suffering a fall in his home studio weeks earlier. Kevin has a profound connection to KISS and Ace as a lifelong fan and proud member of the KISS Army. While not an obscure artist by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had 10 gold records, 5 multi-platinum records with KISS, and a platinum solo album), the duo tries to share some lesser-known songs, including a few crazy guest appearances. Excuse Kevin's extensive ramblings about the great Space Ace, but this loss was hard, and the tribute is necessary. Ace was a true character, who played a character, and played with character. A genuine original. A true rock star.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the FORGOTTEN. Although a member of a band that holds the RIAA distinction of having the most gold-certified albums overall by any American band is hardly forgotten… In any case, we are paying tribute to one of the greatest guitarists of all time! Tom Hambridge is a Grammy Award-winning drummer, songwriter, and producer whose fingerprints are all over modern blues and rock music. Known for his powerhouse drumming, soulful songwriting, and Grammy-winning production work, Hambridge has built an extraordinary career that bridges the worlds of stage and studio — working alongside some of the biggest legends in American music.Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Tom began playing drums at the age of five, showing an instinctive sense of rhythm that would shape his life. He studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he honed his craft not only as a drummer but also as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Before becoming one of Nashville's most in-demand producers, Hambridge led his own band, Tom Hambridge & The Rattlesnakes, building a devoted following for his high-energy live shows and original songs that blended blues, rock, and Americana influences.Hambridge's reputation as a go-to songwriter and producer skyrocketed when he began collaborating with blues icon Buddy Guy. Their creative partnership produced a string of critically acclaimed albums, including Skin Deep, Living Proof, and The Blues Don't Lie. These records not only revitalized Guy's career but also earned multiple Grammy Awards and Blues Music Awards, cementing Hambridge's place as one of the leading producers in contemporary blues.Beyond Buddy Guy, Tom has written and produced for an impressive roster of legendary artists, including Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood, Joe Bonamassa, James Cotton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, and Johnny Winter. His songs have been covered and recorded by icons across genres, from rock to country, demonstrating his remarkable versatility and storytelling gift. While his songwriting and production credits are extensive, Tom Hambridge's drumming credentials are equally impressive. He has toured and recorded with artists such as Delbert McClinton, Boston, and Chuck Berry, always delivering his signature mix of groove, drive, and precision. Whether behind the kit in the studio or on stage at major festivals, Hambridge's playing exudes both heart and technical mastery. As a solo artist, Tom has released several acclaimed albums that showcase his gritty vocals and songwriting depth. Today, Tom Hambridge stands as one of the most respected figures in modern blues and roots music. With multiple Grammys, dozens of producer credits, and a reputation for elevating every artist he works with, Hambridge's influence reaches far beyond the studio. Whether producing chart-topping albums, writing soulful hits, or performing his own electrifying shows, he continues to shape the sound of contemporary American music — one song, one beat, and one record at a time. What's Inside This EpisodeTom Hambridge's early years, musical upbringing, and path to BerkleeHow he built his career before writing for major artistsThe rise of Tom Hambridge & The Rattlesnakes and his early solo workHis game-changing songwriting and production partnership with Buddy GuyThe major artists he has written for and produced, from Joe Bonamassa to Susan TedeschiThe legendary musicians he has drummed for on stage and in the studioA look at his acclaimed solo albums including Boom!, The NOLA Sessions, and Blues Don't CareHow Hambridge helped shape the modern blues soundHis ongoing influence as a drummer, songwriter, and Grammy-winning producerFor further information on Tom head to his website: http://hambridgetunes.com/With comments or suggestions head to my website: https:www.abreathoffreshair.com.au

And who knows, maybe it'll get delayed again! Full disclosure, I edited this after getting home from a concert where I forgot to bring ear plugs. I *think* the sound levels are fine. Apologies if not. I blame Joe Bonamassa. Don't forget to head to our discord to leave your #discorner questions! When people talk about the great rock vocalists of all time, several familiar and redundant names will always appear, like Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Chris Cornell and others. One name that appears on those same lists is Rock And Roll Hall of Famer, Glenn Hughes, known for his work in Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze, Black Country Communion, and as a solo artist. We were lucky enough to speak with him about the new record, upcoming confirmed projects with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Joe Bonamassa, as well as what it was like to play Cal Jam I in Ontario and his thoughts on loosing his friend Ozzy Osbourne the prior week.
It's a high-energy Friday on Right on Radio as the host welcomes listeners to the “grand illusion” and sets the table for a sweeping tour through faith, media, and geopolitics. The episode opens with the interactive Word on Word segment, comparing Luke 1:49 with Romans 14:8—listeners overwhelmingly choose Romans 14:8—and a teased clue about the next New Testament book for the returning Sunday Bible study. A dance-inducing outro track is promised to cap the show, complete with another hint for eager Bible-readers. Challenging mainstream and alternative media alike, the host argues that coordinated talking points, sentiment-tracking, and AI-driven feedback loops are used to steer public opinion and prevent unity. The conversation frames current narratives as flexible storylines that are constantly adjusted based on measured dissent, with control—rather than outcomes—presented as the primary objective of the so-called elites. From there, the lens widens to Canada, where the host describes economic decline, internal trade barriers, resource constraints, and growing separatist talk in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec. The discussion then shifts to the UK and Commonwealth, highlighting October timelines for central bank digital currencies, rising public resistance, and the broader struggle between central banking power and the BRICS push toward gold-backed systems. Gold signals, shifting Arctic trade routes (with Canada and Russia as key stakeholders), and an alternative to the Suez chokepoint (the proposed Ben Gurion Canal) are presented as pieces of a fast-changing global chessboard. Turning to Ukraine, the episode outlines the host's view of Russia's red lines—retaining eastern regions, rolling back NATO encroachment, and “de‑nazification”—and the claim that public messaging obscures the real stakes. The much-discussed Trump–Putin meeting is portrayed as pre-scripted, with the true agenda said to involve trade corridors, currency realignment, and dismantling the old power triad of the City of London, the Vatican, and Washington, D.C. A reported threat of a false-flag attack in Kyiv is also mentioned as part of the day's tense backdrop. The episode detours into the UFO debate as it ricochets through Congress and media: “greys,” “Nordics,” “insectoids,” and “reptilians” are reinterpreted through a spiritual lens, with the host framing them as angelic or demonic manifestations rather than extraterrestrials. This leads into a prophetic thread on the rise of “ten kings,” a brief transfer of power, and the emergence of the Antichrist—tying scriptural expectations to contemporary events and symbols, including the meeting location dubbed “Q1” on 17th Street. Throughout, the host emphasizes keeping faith centered: do not look to politicians for salvation, trust God's sovereignty, and weigh unfolding events against Scripture. Community notes include a Saturday night prayer call on Telegram and a lighthearted household saga featuring a soot-covered dog, a stubborn squirrel, and a reluctant fireplace. The show closes with a Joe Bonamassa track—“Love Ain't a Love Song”—and a final nudge for listeners to guess the next Bible study book. No guest joins this episode; instead, it's a spirited solo deep-dive with real-time audience participation, weaving together media critique, geopolitics, spiritual warfare, and practical faith. Guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa returns to Chewing the Gristle, bringing his characteristic wit and wisdom as he prepares for an ambitious European tour season. This conversation between two master guitarists reveals the realities of sustaining a music career with both artistic integrity and business savvy.Bonamassa takes us behind the scenes of his upcoming three-month European adventure, which includes solo performances, a Black Country Communion reunion after 14 years, and a special tribute to blues legend Rory Gallagher. The logistics are fascinating – he maintains duplicate touring rigs for Europe and America, a practical response to shipping costs that have nearly tripled since the pandemic. The highlight comes when Bonamassa shares treasures from his 1,200+ instrument collection, including his beloved "Principal Skinner" 1959 Les Paul. Rather than treating these vintage pieces as museum exhibits, he plays them regularly, embracing each new ding and scratch as part of their continuing story. "They're not out here to be preserved," he explains, challenging the collector mentality that prioritizes value over music-making.What truly distinguishes this episode is Bonamassa's candid assessment of music business realities. After discovering early in his career that middlemen were taking substantial portions of his performance fees, he developed a direct-to-consumer approach that has sustained his career. "My motto is I don't need millions, I just need enough," he shares, articulating a philosophy that values artistic fulfillment over commercial peaks. For aspiring musicians, Bonamassa offers both sobering and inspiring advice: "You have to love this thing so much that you're willing to take a vow of poverty, still be happy, and can't live with yourself if you don't play." It's this unwavering passion, combined with business acumen, that has enabled his enduring career in the often unforgiving music industry.Ready to hear more wisdom from one of blues rock's most successful independent artists? Seth Rosenbloom, the fiery young blues guitarist from Massachusetts, brings his wealth of musical knowledge and performing experience to the Chewing the Gristle podcast. What begins as a gear chat about Two Rock amplifiers quickly evolves into a fascinating exploration of musical authenticity and the hard realities of making a living as a performing musician. When Seth discovered his prized 1956 Stratocaster at Lark Street Music, it changed his entire perspective on the instrument. "It's not as bright as I associated with maple neck Strats," he explains, highlighting how vintage instruments often defy our modern expectations. The same revelation occurred when he first played genuine 1950s Les Pauls with their bell-like clarity, so different from the heavier, woofier sound of later models. These insights reveal how our perceptions of iconic instruments are often shaped by mass-produced versions rather than the originals that created their legendary status. The conversation takes a compelling turn as Seth shares his journey from metal-loving teenager to blues guitarist. A pivotal moment came when his mother, hoping to discourage his musical aspirations, took him to see an up-and-coming blues player at a small jazz club - Joe Bonamassa. Rather than dissuading Seth, the experience ignited his passion for blues guitar. With his father's cautious blessing (himself a professional classical musician), Seth eventually dropped out of high school to pursue music full-time, a decision that shaped his career path. What truly sets this episode apart is the candid discussion about the business realities musicians face. From the challenge of finding good booking agents to the economics of small venues, Seth and Greg pull back the curtain on aspects of performing that fans rarely consider. "Getting a record deal is almost easy in comparison to getting a decent booking agent," Greg notes, while Seth reveals why he consistently performs better in seated venues than standing rock clubs.Ready to discover how professional musicians navigate the modern industry while staying true to their artistic vision? Send Steve a Text MessageWhat really holds most guitar players back? After teaching thousands of guitarists, I've discovered it's rarely about technical ability—it's about confidence. That feeling of certainty when you play, knowing who you are as a musician, and being comfortable in your own skin. The journey to guitar confidence follows five distinct phases, each building upon the last. It begins with curiosity—that moment when you hear Hendrix, Van Halen, or whoever your inspiration might be, and think "I want to do that!" This natural motivation fuels your early development. Next comes foundation building, where you develop the essential skills needed for your musical goals. This is where many players get distracted by "bright shiny objects" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that will truly advance their playing. The third phase—developing actual confidence—is where most guitarists get stuck. It requires something scary: being vulnerable enough to play for others and receive feedback. "I'll play with people once I'm better" becomes a perpetual excuse, creating a cycle where improvement stalls because you're not getting the feedback needed to grow. Breaking through this barrier transforms your playing.Once confidence develops, you enter the creative expression phase, where your playing begins to sound more human and personal. This naturally evolves into the final phase—musical identity. The liberating truth is that even guitar legends have limitations. Tommy Emanuel doesn't play like Eddie Van Halen, and Joe Bonamassa doesn't sound like Steve Vai. These players succeeded not by mastering everything, but by embracing who they are musically. The guitar truly is Pandora's box—endless possibilities that will outlive us all. Don't let that overwhelm you. Finding your center and developing confidence in your unique voice is the real path to becoming the guitarist you want to be. Where are you in these five phases, and what's your next step toward confident playing?
