This week's Blues is the Truth is packed with soul, grit and powerful music from across the blues spectrum, hosted as always by Ian McHugh. There's a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Joe Louis Walker, who features heavily in the show, and Ian also brings news about two outstanding new blues films you won't want to miss. Musically, it's a journey through classics and new favourites, including the raw emotion of John Primer and the powerful collaboration between Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Bobby Rush. Katie Bradley and Chris Corcoran light up the speakers with their distinctive style, and we've got searing guitar work from the likes of Eric Clapton, Popa Chubby, Matt Schofield, Robin Bibi, Sean Chambers, and Eric Johansen. The iconic sounds of Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker, Charlie Musselwhite, and the Vaughan Brothers sit comfortably alongside the soulful voices of Janiva Magness, Kyla Brox, Lou Pride, and Ally Venable. There's also music from Darcy Perry, Jordan Officer, and a brilliant track from Joe Louis Walker that reminds us just how much he's shaped the modern blues landscape. Don't miss this emotional, exciting and expertly curated episode. As always, like, follow, share, subscribe, and leave a review—it all helps spread the blues even further!

Michael Jerome had been drumming in a post-industrial metal band when he auditioned for Richard Thompson in 1999, little knowing he would be this brilliant guitarist's percussive foil for the next 25 years and counting. Jerome also has played with Charlie Musselwhite, the Blind Boys of Alabama and, for several years, John Cale. He's been Better Than Ezra's drummer since 2009 and played and toured with Slash for his latest album—and what started as an experimental side project is now moving center stage: The Third Mind, the improvisatory psychedelic band assembled by Dave Alvin and Victor Krummenacher. As thoughtful in conversation as he is dazzling behind his kit, Jerome tells how he developed his unique style and adapts it for each project—and he relates what it's like to be in Los Angeles now as he tries to help friends and others who have lost almost everything in the catastrophic wildfires. Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop, two towering legends in the blues world, have carved their places in music history through decades of innovation, collaboration, and a shared love for the blues. Both emerged from the heart of Chicago's thriving 1960s blues scene, though they took distinct paths that would eventually lead to an unforgettable partnership. Musselwhite, born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, grew up surrounded by the rich musical traditions of Delta blues, country, and gospel. Moving to Chicago in the early 1960s, he quickly became part of the city's electric blues explosion, playing alongside legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. His 1967 debut album, Stand Back! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's Southside Band, was a groundbreaking success, blending traditional blues with elements of jazz, rock, and country, and establishing him as one of the foremost harmonica players in the world. Over the years, Musselwhite's deep, soulful harmonica playing and gritty, heartfelt vocals earned him multiple Grammy Awards and Blues Music Awards, solidifying his place as a key figure in the preservation and progression of blues music. Elvin Bishop, born in California and raised in Oklahoma, brought his own unique style to the blues. Influenced by the sounds of country and rhythm and blues, Bishop's guitar playing drew from his Southern roots, blending blues with rock and country in a way that was both electrifying and soulful. After moving to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago, Bishop found himself immersed in the local blues scene, joining forces with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the early 1960s. His time with the band was pivotal, as they helped pioneer the fusion of blues and rock, which would soon come to define much of the music of that era. Bishop's solo career took off in the 1970s, highlighted by the massive hit “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” (1976), which remains a classic of the rock and blues genres. Over the course of his career, Bishop has released more than 20 albums, receiving critical acclaim for his fiery guitar work, playful lyrics, and his seamless blending of blues, boogie-woogie, country, and rock. The collaboration between Musselwhite and Bishop brought together two titans of blues who shared a deep respect for the genre's traditions while continuously pushing its boundaries. The pair had crossed paths many times throughout their careers, but their formal collaboration came to full fruition with the release of their album 100 Years of Blues (2020). The album, steeped in the authenticity of their combined experience, features raw, unfiltered blues with a modern twist. Their chemistry, honed over years of friendship and mutual admiration, shines through on every track, with Musselwhite's masterful harmonica complementing Bishop's electrifying guitar riffs and distinctive vocals. Together, Charlie Musselwhite and Elvin Bishop represent a unique blend of two blues journeys that began in the same place but evolved along different paths. Whether playing in a stripped-down duo format or backed by a full band, their collaboration embodies the timelessness of the blues while showcasing the creative innovation that has kept the genre alive and thriving for over half a century. Today, they continue to perform and record, keeping their sound fresh, vital, and deeply rooted in the authentic blues tradition, ensuring that their legacy will influence future generations of musicians and fans alike.

Colin's 21st album is called Chasing the Sun. Today, Aug 17 is his Birthday. Happy Day Colin Co-produced by Colin Linden in his Pinhead Studios in Nashville. Colin's coming to the Mulligan Stew Podcast with the complete story of how he and his friends wrote and created these outstanding songs. Colin singing a Lucinda Williams song, Protection, with Lucinda in the studio doing harmony. Two tracks with blues harp legend Charlie Musselwhite, co-writing memorable songs with Tom Wilson, Terra Lightfoot, Thompson Wilson, Jesse Obrien and others. A great rhythm section of Darryl Jones (Stones) Charley Drayton (Keith Richards). A splendid cover of Paul Butterfield's classic In My Own Dream. Also vocals by The McCrary Sisters and Ruby Amanfu Colin Linden leading the all-star band and co-writing with Colin James. It's their 6th album together. Colin and I have been doing interviews for a long time but there are still events and moments in his life that need retelling. For example, when the two Colins' met on the Canadian Prairies Colin James was 13 and Colin Linden was 17. Both were into playing the blues. A short time later Colin, still a teenager, got to play for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Stevie helped him take the next steps in his career. This is the complete Interview. His 2021 album Open Road won the JUNO Award for Best Blues Album and was nominated for Blues Foundation Best Blues Rock Album in 2023. Catching the Sun may very well get the best reception yet.

With its ever-changing course, its flowing waters and historical significance, the Mississippi River serves as a powerful metaphor for the American story. The river is a lifeblood nourishing the land while also serving as a path to freedom itself, symbolizing the pursuit of freedom and progress from the North to the Gulf of Mexico. Additional to all of this are its routes of trade and commerce that highlight both the American spirit and prosperity. This week's Deeper Roots show celebrates the river that got its name after the northern Minnesota people, the Ojibway, and their name for ‘big river' as well as songs of the namesake state and delta as well. Performances include mid-century recordings from country favorites the Delmore Brothers and Jimmie Skinner, blues from Charlie Musselwhite and the Rufus Thomas, as well as classic recordings of Bob Dylan, Charley Pride, Pops Staples and the Boswell Sisters. Tune into West County radio each Friday morning at 9 Pacific.

Vanguard Records is best known for its eclectic catalog of pivotal jazz, folk, rock and blues recordings by iconic artists like Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt, Buddy Guy, Charlie Musselwhite, John Fahey, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and countless others. Most recently, Vanguard has carried forward the label's legacy of artistic excellence with a diverse roster including Barenaked Ladies, Indigo Girls, O.A.R. and Collective Soul.Riding the tail end of the popular boom of commercialized Folk Music, Vanguard's unexpected mega-hit "Walk Right In" soared to the top of the pop chart. Looking for a long forgotten treasure to mine, Erik Darling and Bill Svanoe, doing what many had done before them, updated an old string band tune, composed by Gus Cannon and recorded with his Jug Stompers in 1929. They arranged it for TWO 12-String guitars (one of which, a leftie model, had to be specially constructed for Bill), and adding the mellifluous tones of Lynne Taylor to complete the trio, the magic concoction was brewed to MOR perfection. And, just in time for Gus Cannon, too! He had recently pawned his banjo to pay his heating bill, and the royalties and national recognition breathed new life into a long dormant career.

My guest in this episode has two names! In his day to day life he is Noury Bernard-Hasan , or in true rock star style simply ‘Noury' to anyone who knows him. However, for the last 15+ years he has also been a semi-professional Blues musician and he performs under the name of ‘Son Jack Jr'. Born in 1962, shortly after his parents emigrated to England from India, Noury grew up around West Kensington and the Hammersmith Road. His love of music started at an early age when he was given his first guitar by Manny Elias who went on to be the drummer with Tears for Fears in their heyday. Noury was not a fan of Progressive Rock or Disco and in 1973 the film American Graffiti resulted in in a dalliance with playing Rock & Roll over the next couple of years. But all that changed on his 15th Birthday (7/02/77) when he went to The Nashville Room and saw a band he'd never heard of – The Jam! The world was never the same for Noury after that night and subsequently he was in a band who released an album and were well known on ‘the London Scene'. As is so often the case though the band eventually petered out and in the early 80's, encouraged by his girlfriend at the time, Noury enrolled on a programming course convincing himself this was another creative outlet. Cobol and writing Capex systems for Hertz didn't initially deliver against that brief but it did lead to a successful 30-year career with Microsoft and then Amazon from which he recently retired at the end of last year. Whilst working for Microsoft he moved to Seattle in 1997 which reignited his interest in music and resulted in a massive life change. In the city of grunge Noury developed an interest and then a deep passion for the Blues which kick-started his semi pro career as Son Jack Jr. His passion for the Blues comes across loud and clear in this episode and I for one learnt a lot. It's also great to hear him talk how he got to support Charlie Musselwhite and Chuck Berry amongst others. Noury moved back to the UK in the summer of 2020 with his wife and their 17-year-old daughter and in December of last year he announced his retirement from corporate life. Which of course leaves a lot more time for music. A new band is being put together as we speak, and I can't wait to see them live. I hope you enjoy our conversation half as much as I did. #electricflag #sanfranciscoscene Nick Gravenites played in clubs with Mike Bloomfield, Charlie Musselwhite and others. In 1967 he formed the Electric Flag with Bloomfield. Gravenites also wrote the score for the film The Trip and produced the music for the film Steelyard Blues. Gravenites is credited as a "musical handyman", helping such San Francisco bands as Quicksilver Messenger Service and Janis Joplin's first solo group, the Kozmic Blues Band. He wrote several songs for Joplin, including "Work Me, Lord" and the unfinished instrumental track "Buried Alive in the Blues". Gravenites was the lead singer in the re-formed Big Brother and the Holding Company (without Joplin) from 1969 to 1972. He also worked extensively with John Cipollina after producing the first album by Quicksilver Messenger Service. Gravenites produced the pop hit "One Toke Over the Line" for Brewer & Shipley and the album Right Place, Wrong Time for Otis Rush, for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award. This week's guest is Matthew Stubbs. As a guitarist and founding member of GA-20, Stubbs has released two well-received albums, toured extensively, ascended the Billboard charts and helped to usher in a traditional blues revival. With a new album on the way — Crackdown, out Sept. 9 on Colemine Records! — and a bunch of shows on the horizon, Stubbs has a lot of modern day things to talk about. Even beyond his work with GA-20, Stubbs has quite an impressive musical resume. Prior to setting out on tour, Stubbs spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about the new GA-20 record, what it's been like to get back on the road and why he feels it's important to give new life to traditional blues music. Of course, he also spoke about his musical past, including learning to play guitar at an early age, performing throughout New England with his dad's band, moving to Los Angeles in his early 20s and making a living as a side man. Along the way, he talked about touring with notable blues musicians like Janiva Magness and James Watson before landing a spot in the band of the legendary Charlie Musselwhite — where he's spent roughly 15 years and counting. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. [12:00] Rain and Ben discuss impermanence and being present with the people you care about. [19:00] Staying out of the comparison trap. [25:00] Making connections with music. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Music is a universal language that helps people from all over make connections. Being aware of our own impermanence helps us strive to be the best version of ourselves. Live music is such an immersive and personal experience for every person in the crowd. Every show has something special about it. BIO: Grammy award-winning guitarist, songwriter, and bandleader Ben Harper grew up listening to blues, folk, soul, R&B, and reggae. He started playing guitar as a child and began to perform regularly as a preteen. During his adolescence, he focused heavily on the acoustic slide guitar, which eventually became his signature instrument. Harper enjoyed cult status on the jam band scene in the 1990s largely due to the success of his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, and its follow-up, Fight for Your Mind, before gaining wider attention near the decade's end. During the 21st century, he transcended the genre to become a wildly diverse performer, collaborator, and sideman who has worked with artists ranging from the Blind Boys of Alabama and Charlie Musselwhite to John Mayer. Harper drew his influences from classic singer/songwriters, blues revivalists, guitar slingers, and jam bands like Blues Traveler and Phish, which meant he was embraced by critics and college kids alike. Despite finding commercial success with the radio single "Steal My Kisses" in 2000, Harper continued to explore different (and often challenging) musical textures during the early 21st century, enjoying a solid fan base at home and a considerable amount of fame in Europe, where he was named 2003's Artist of the Year by the French branch of Rolling Stone.
