This episode explores the understanding of the intersection of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and sexual violence prevention—including breaking stigmas, clarifying neurodiverse experiences in relationships, and promoting safety and respect. Individuals with ASD and neurodivergence experience the world in a unique way. However, they also face disproportionate rates of marginalization, discrimination and violence. Additionally, this group is more than 3 times as likely to experience sexual violence compared to those without disabilities. At VSC, we aim to understand the nuances of neurodivergence and how we can all be a part of protecting and supporting this community. In our first segment, we're joined by Maria Torres, a volunteer for the Autism Society of Florida, an educator in the field and a parent of a child affected by autism spectrum disorder. Maria shares some of the safety challenges that she see's children with autism struggling with today – including wandering and being drawn to water, which increases the risk of drowning. Also, Maria discusses the importance of families seeking support groups and community. In the second segment, we're joined by Michelle Zeman, a neurodivergent self-advocate, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and co-host of the REACH podcast—an initiative from the Autism Society of Florida. Michelle uses both personal experience and professional insight to uplift neurodivergent voices, challenge stigma, and expand the conversation around relationships, communication, and safety. In the third segment, we're joined by Catharine Warren, an Autism Specialist with the UCF Center for Autism and Related Disabilities. Catharine will share how CARD supports individuals, families and professionals in creating safer, more inclusive spaces for people on the autism spectrum. For many neurodivergent individuals, safety is a concern. Catharine shares some of the practical safety strategies that have been effective in supporting neurodivergent people and protecting their family.Guest SpeakersMarria Torres: volunteer, educator, parent and volunteer at Autism Society of FloridaMichelle Zeman: Host of the REACH PodcastOrganization: Autism Society of Florida. Is "do no harm" the most misunderstood phrase in medicine?

Psychiatrist Sabooh S. Mubbashar discusses his article, "Why 'do no harm' might be harming modern medicine." He reveals that the principle "First, do no harm," or Primum non nocere, is not part of the original Hippocratic Oath but a later, misattributed addition that has become a dangerously oversimplified slogan. Sabooh argues that a literal interpretation makes medicine impossible, as every intervention, from surgery to medication, technically inflicts harm. This creates a dissonance for clinicians and can paradoxically lead to overly aggressive care, especially at the end of life, where the pressure to "do everything" causes more suffering than benefit. The conversation explores how the interplay of this flawed mantra with patient autonomy and fear of liability can lead to choices that are legally defensible but ethically and clinically harmful. As a solution, he suggests returning to the oath's original, more honest language, which calls on physicians to use their "ability and judgment" to weigh risk and benefit, acknowledging that real ethics live not in mottos but in the nuanced, gray areas of clinical practice. Slator's Head of Research Anna Wyndham joins Florian on the pod to discuss Microsoft's research paper “Working with AI: Measuring the Occupational Implications of Generative AI”, a study that stirred significant debate across social media. The paper, based on 200,000 anonymized Microsoft Copilot interactions, aims to understand what tasks people ask AI to perform and how effectively those tasks are completed. Pairing this with the US O*NET database of occupational tasks, researchers created an "AI applicability score" to assess overlap between AI-capable tasks and real-world job functions.Anna emphasizes that the researchers distinguish between AI performing individual tasks and full jobs. Even the most affected roles, like interpreters and translators, show only partial overlap, around 50%, with activities AI can complete.Florian and Anna stress that the research does not claim AI will replace top-ranked occupations. Rather, it shows where AI is most often helpful, with knowledge-based activities like writing, summarizing, and gathering information topping the list. The Microsoft researchers also acknowledge key limitations. For example, jobs are more than bundles of disconnected tasks; they involve context, judgment, and synthesis, often referred to as the "glue" that AI lacks. Additionally, Anna points out that Copilot's integration into tools used by knowledge workers may bias the results in its favor.Ultimately, the duo agree the paper validates what's already known: AI is helpful for language-related tasks, but not transformational enough yet to supplant the people who perform them.

In this episode of The Dish on Health IT, Tony Schueth and Rob Dribbon are joined by Neikisha Charles Director of Quality Improvement and Risk Management of Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center (Bed-Stuy), a federally qualified health center (FQHC) in Brooklyn, NY. Together, they dig into common misconceptions about FQHCs and shine a spotlight on the opportunities they present for strategic engagement across the healthcare ecosystem—especially for health IT and life sciences organizations.Neikisha opens with her personal journey: starting as a data analyst at Bed-Stuy in 2021 and quickly rising into her current leadership role because of her knack for using data to drive quality improvement. Her story illustrates the increasing sophistication of FQHCs and sets the tone for a broader conversation about how these organizations are evolving. To help orient listeners who may not fully understand the role of FQHCs, Neikisha provides a clear definition: FQHCs are federally funded community-based providers mandated to offer care to all residents in underserved areas, regardless of insurance status. They are deeply attuned to social determinants of health and committed to removing access barriers for vulnerable populations.Rob adds context from his years in pharma, highlighting the unique value proposition of FQHCs—namely, their holistic and integrated approach to care. He urges listeners not to overlook these organizations simply because they've historically focused on commercial health systems.Neikisha then debunks a major myth: that FQHCs only serve uninsured or homeless patients. In fact, Bed-Stuy primarily serves Medicaid-managed populations, but also sees commercially insured and uninsured individuals, offering services on a sliding scale. Services range from primary care and mental health to dental, podiatry, and optometry, along with extensive care coordination and social support services. When asked what health IT vendors and life sciences companies may be missing, Neikisha makes it clear: FQHCs are not tech or data-poor. Bed-Stuy uses a robust EHR (eClinicalWorks), the Azara DRVS population health platform, and Artera for two-way patient communication. These tools aren't just window dressing—they are integrated into care delivery to close gaps, improve compliance, and monitor population health in real time. She offers a compelling case study: When colorectal cancer screening rates began to drop, Neikisha led a data-driven campaign using Azara to identify noncompliant patients, Artera to send targeted outreach texts, and a partnership with Exact Sciences to offer Cologuard kits to patients by mail. The result? A 12.3% increase in screening compliance over 18 months.Rob underscores the significance of this approach—not just the smart use of technology, but also the community-level relationships and the trust that make this kind of intervention effective. The discussion then shifts to interoperability. Neikisha notes the complexities of data exchange and the importance of dedicated roles like a Director of Health Integration to manage relationships and reporting. Bed-Stuy is connected to a regional health information organization (RHIO), uses platforms like Azara to track transitions of care, and maintains read-only EMR access with key partners to streamline care coordination. While true vendor-agnostic interoperability remains elusive, FQHCs are actively working with what's available.Tony brings the conversation back to the bigger picture: What gaps do vendors and life sciences partners need to close? Neikisha points to the need for better education about what FQHCs actually do and who they serve. She challenges companies to co-create solutions with FQHCs—offering tools that reflect real-world workflows and support sustainable partnerships rather than transactional engagements. The episode wraps with both Rob and Neikisha emphasizing the untapped potential of FQHCs. With over 30 million Americans relying on them for care, these organizations are not fringe players—they are essential infrastructure. And as Neikisha puts it, they're “here to stay.” To partner successfully, the first step is simple: reach out, learn what's needed, and build something meaningful together.Related ContentWhat Are FQHCs, & Should Life Sciences Manufacturers Even Care About Them?HIT Perspectives May 2025: FQHC Myth vs Fact Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center Brooklyn NY - Primary Care Services

In this episode of What Happens in Vagus, Dr. Stephanie Canestraro sits down with Farah Zipursky for a powerful and deeply personal conversation about chronic illness, healing, and the importance of taking a holistic approach to wellness. Farah shares how her health journey began while living in Australia, where a growing interest in nutrition and whole foods led her down the path of functional medicine. Struggling with Bell's Palsy and later receiving a Lyme disease diagnosis, Farah was forced to look deeper into the root causes of her chronic symptoms. Her exploration into gut health, nervous system regulation, and detoxification became the foundation of her healing process. Together, Dr. Steph and Farah dive into the importance of lymphatic health, regular bowel movements, and the role of environmental toxins in chronic disease. They touch on the benefits and limitations of treatments like stem cell therapy and hyperthermia, and how integrating conventional and functional medicine can lead to more effective outcomes. This episode also highlights the often invisible struggles of chronic illness and the vital role patient empowerment plays in recovery. Farah emphasizes that healing is a slow, intentional process that requires patience, persistence, and support, and that understanding your body is one of the most powerful tools on the journey to wellness. Let us know your thoughts on this episode here

Far too many software projects crash not because of poor coding, but because of poor planning. In this episode of Building Better Developers with AI, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche explore why requirements matter more than ever. They dive deep into the foundational role that clearly defined, testable, and outcome-focused requirements play in delivering successful software projects. With insights drawn from hands-on experience and AI-generated discussion points, the episode uncovers how misaligned expectations and incomplete planning can derail even the most promising initiatives. Whether you're a developer, product manager, or founder, this conversation reminds us that getting it right starts well before a line of code is written. Why Requirements Matter in Software Development Rob and Michael begin by revisiting a powerful truth: software requirements are the blueprint for everything that follows. Vague requests and incomplete specifications are the root cause of missed deadlines, blown budgets, and frustrated clients. Callout CEO: 70% of software project failures are tied to poor requirements, not bad developers. When everyone understands what's being built—and more importantly, why—teams align better, and projects succeed more often. Requirements Matter More Than Perfect Code Even flawless code can't rescue a project built on the wrong foundation. Rob highlights three common causes of failure: Misunderstood business goals Disconnects between stakeholders and developers Expanding scope from unclear requirements If the team can't agree on what success looks like, no amount of elegant code will save the effort. For more on aligning teams and expectations, check out our episode on Bridging Methodologies. Requirements Matter: Start with the Why Michael emphasizes starting with the business objective. Before diving into specs or wireframes, ask: Why does this solution need to exist? What problem is it solving? Many clients envision modern systems based on outdated workflows. Developers must educate while extracting needs—balancing modernization with functionality that still matters. Requirements Matter When Writing User Stories Rob and Michael advocate for user stories—clear, testable statements of what the system must do. A well-written story includes: A specific actor (e.g., user, admin) A goal (e.g., schedule an appointment) An expected result (e.g., receive confirmation) Michael puts it plainly: If a developer doesn't know when a requirement is “done,” it's not a requirement—it's a guess. Learn more about effective story writing with this Agile user story guide. Requirements Matter in Managing Scope and Budget Requirements aren't just lists—they're guardrails. Michael warns that unchecked feature creep can quietly drain resources and sink projects. A disciplined list of must-haves versus nice-to-haves keeps everything on track. Start with the core. A “calendar app” doesn't need AI-scheduling in version one. Build the basics first, validate them, and then iterate with purpose. Requirements Matter in Prototypes and Demos Rob is a strong advocate for visual requirements. Tools like Figma, PowerPoint, and internal “kitchen sink” demos help bring vague ideas into sharp focus. Stakeholders often struggle to articulate what they want—until they see it. Clickable mockups bridge the communication gap and reduce costly rework. As Rob puts it, “the more real it feels, the better the feedback you'll get.” Balancing Detail: When Requirements Matter and When They Don't Finding the balance between too little and too much detail is key. Rob favors lightweight specs for creative flexibility, while Michael leans on testable, bulletproof requirements. Their advice? Define what the system must do, but avoid locking in how it must be done—especially too early. The goal is clarity of intent, not rigidity in implementation. Make Requirements Matter on Your Team Before wrapping up, Rob and Michael pose a practical challenge to all teams: Can every requirement in your backlog be tested and tied to a business goal? If not, it may be time to revise or remove it. Unclear requirements aren't just annoying—they're expensive. By committing to clarity, your team reduces ambiguity, limits rework, and speeds up delivery. Every stakeholder benefits when expectations are grounded in reality. Final Thoughts From stakeholder interviews to wireframes and test-driven development, requirements matter at every stage of the software development lifecycle. Each assumption should be questioned. Each “nice to have” should be weighed carefully. Every essential feature must be validated. So the next time you're tempted to “just start coding,” take a step back and ask: Do we really understand what we're building—and why? Because when requirements matter, your software delivers. A strong project kickoff strategy can make or break your software project. In this episode of Building Better Developers with AI, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche revisit and expand upon their earlier episode, Mastering the Project Kickoff – Setting the Stage for Success. This time, they use AI not to redefine strategy, but to reflect on what worked, what's changed, and what new insights can improve how teams approach kickoffs today. The result is a deeper, more refined look at launching software projects with intention and clarity—before writing a single line of code. Why Your Project Kickoff Strategy Still Matters “Two weeks in, and no one agrees on the goal.” It's a story most developers know too well. The reason? A weak or nonexistent project kickoff strategy. Rob and Michael break down how early misalignment on goals, responsibilities, or MVPs can derail projects quickly. To avoid this, teams need a consistent, structured approach that starts before the first line of code is written. How AI Improves Your Project Kickoff Strategy AI can't replace a good team conversation, but it can support a better project kickoff strategy by helping structure discussions, define deliverables, and highlight gaps in planning. Some examples AI tools can generate: Stakeholder role outlines Risk assessment prompts Project objective statements Kickoff meeting checklists With good prompting, AI becomes a partner in better planning. Core Elements of a Strong Project Kickoff Strategy A repeatable project kickoff strategy should include the following: 1. Purpose and Objectives What are we building, and why? Define the business problem and expected outcome clearly. 2. Team Roles and Ownership List all stakeholders, assign responsibilities, and clarify decision-makers. Misunderstood roles create avoidable blockers. 3. Process and Delivery Plan Establish your delivery method (Agile, Scrum, Kanban) and how progress will be tracked, tested, and shared. 4. MVP and Scope Control Rob and Michael emphasize: everything must map to the MVP. If it doesn't, reconsider the feature. 5. Documentation and Visibility Centralize everything. Use Notion, Confluence, or shared drives, and record meetings for searchability and auditability. Warning Signs of a Poor Kickoff Strategy Michael and Rob call out red flags that reveal when your project kickoff strategy is weak or broken: No written MVP or goals Absent stakeholders during planning Overlapping roles with unclear boundaries “We'll figure it out later” mindset No documentation or decision logs Ignoring these signs leads to confusion, rework, and a breakdown in team trust. Anchor Your Kickoff Strategy with an MVP “If your feature doesn't pass a test, it's not part of your MVP.” Michael shares a practical tip: create user stories first, then turn them into pass/fail tests. This ensures that your project kickoff strategy stays laser-focused on outcomes—not distractions like UI polish or edge-case bells and whistles. Challenge: Audit Your Project Kickoff Strategy Before your next launch, hold a quick strategy review. Ask: Do we have a clearly defined MVP? Are team roles written and confirmed? Are meeting notes and decisions documented? Does every feature connect to project goals? If not, revise your strategy now—before you waste time. Gardner-Johnson sits down with Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to open up like never before and sets record straight on many questions and rumors surrounding his name and image. The outspoken safety gets real about the highs and lows of his NFL journey — from being traded and dealing with the label of having a “bad reputation,” to playing a key role in Philadelphia's Super Bowl run and the lessons he's learned along the way. Off the bat, he addresses a recent rumor involving him and NY Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers and leaves no gray area on his side which leads into a deeper discussion around how C.J. is viewed in the NFL. He talks about what it felt like to be misunderstood in the league, how his passion is often mistaken for arrogance, and how those perceptions have impacted his career. C.J. reflects on his time with the Saints and then Lions and finally feeling at home in Philadelphia after winning a championship this past season only to be faced with his biggest pivot yet. Dealing with major heartbreak and trying to sort through confusion, C.J. shares how the darkest times have taught him most about leadership, ,maturity, and accountability. Struggling with things out of his control, his voice full of emotion as he shares to Ryan, Fred and Channing how hard it was on his kids to experience the recent ups and downs of his career. Despite the anguish he felt, C.J. expresses his respect and gratitude for veterans like Lane Johnson in Philly and Malcom Jenkins in New Orleans, holding on to invaluable life lessons. With rare vulnerability and honesty, CJ shares a powerful moment of remorse — expressing what he's sorry for and how he's grown from it. Now entering a new chapter with the Houston Texans, CJ talks about the delayed excitement of joining his new team and building a strong relationship with head coach DeMeco Ryans. We talk about Kidd's rise from colonial sea captain to pirate-hunter, the murky politics of the time, his dramatic trial in London, and the love story that's rarely told. In today's world, the language of therapy is everywhere, filtering from clinicians' offices into viral social media posts, heated arguments, and everyday conversations. But with this widespread use comes a hidden problem. When words like “narcissist,” “gaslighting,” or “toxic” are misused or weaponized in our relationships, they not only muddy honest communication—they erode trust, block growth, and can even do real damage to our connections with others. In this episode, listeners are invited to take a nuanced look at how “therapy speak” has crept into our relationship vocabulary and why this isn't always a good thing. Through real-world examples and professional insight, you'll learn where the line lies between helpful self-expression and language that shuts down vulnerability, repair, and intimacy. By unpacking the ways therapeutic labels can become conversational weapons, this discussion offers practical guidance to help you communicate more consciously, challenge your own assumptions, and foster deeper, more authentic connection—with yourself and with the people you care about most. On September 12th, 1952, in Flatwoods, West Virginia, five boys witnessed a fiery object slowly descend from the sky and land nearby, seemingly under intelligent control. What followed became one of the strangest UFO encounters in American history. Joined by a 32-year-old mother and a National Guard member, the group were allegedly pursued by a towering, mist-shrouded, humanoid figure that emitted strange lights and sounds. And with seven direct witnesses and reports from several states, this was no isolated event. With some eyewitness still speaking up as recently as 2018. Misunderstood and mythologized for decades, the Flatwoods Monster deserves a closer, more accurate look — and that's exactly what we're here to do.
