I scheduled a meeting with my boss one cold mid-March morning in New York City. Since saving up almost $40,000, I had started to taste freedom in my morning coffee. My courage came out of nowhere. I was about to do something crazy. I was on the edge, flirting with the real world. That morning, I did the dead. I quit my full-time job.Three years have passed since that fateful morning, and this week, I hosted a party to celebrate that. As I sipped white wine with my friends, I realized that despite what the crunch of capitalism would want you to believe, I'm still here. I've survived for three years without a full-time job; I also moved to Mexico City and published a teen romance novel in the process. And in some ways, I'm thriving. This article is for anyone in the corporate world who is curious about what I've learned in the chaos of building my new career as a writer, freelancing, and fun, which I'm calling my “post-employment” era. Here, I've distilled for you the five most important professional lessons that I've never shared anywhere else, as well as the most impactful things in other categories of my life.Top Five Lessons for Post-Employment Professional Thriving

In which The Curmudgeons shout before all the human race like we'll never lose. Yup, we're discussing the mighty, mighty Queen on this episode, focusing on the band's undeniable greatness from their beginnings all the way through 1980, when they peaked commercially with "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." The band managed to be unapologetically campy and occasionally naughty while more than occasionally rocking harder than just about any other band on the planet. We give Queen the hero treatment they deserve here. Steven and Ian begin this week's episode with some shocking news: It looks like Steven is going to win the Fantasy Albums Draft this quarter (1:57)! Big help comes courtesy of new albums out today from Michael Kiwanuka and Kim Deal of the Breeders, which have been very well reviewed. Then the guys talk about candidates for "Album Of The Year" according to critical consensus, including Charli XCX's Brat, Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter, MJ Lenderman's Manning Fireworks, and Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee (13:00). Then they dive into the new album from Father John Misty, Mahashmashana, and how it compares to his previous records (32:25).In the mailbag, the guys address one of their all-time best questions: Who is the most "dudes rock" quarterback of all time (45:24)?In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks about the Philly indie band 22° Halo while Steven stumps for the cult singer-songwriter Lee Baggett (56:11).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. This week on Transmissions, return guest Yasmin Williams. On October 4th, she releases Acadia via Nonesuch Records. It's her long awaited follow up to 2021's Urban Driftwood, and like that record, it's beautiful—a showcase for a one-of-a-kind artist. And while the focus remains Williams' fluid and lyrical guitarwork, she's joined by a roster of ringers to help fill out the corners: Aoife O'Donovan, Dom Flemons, Kaki King, William Tyler, and Darklingside and Rich Ruth, whose vocal and synthesizer contributions can be heard on the recently released first single, "Virga." Williams first came back on the show way back in the lockdown days, but life has changed greatly for her since then. She discusses some of those changes, and opens up about her desire to create with Acadia something of a refuge from the chaos of the world. Even though the record finds her joined by an expanded cast, it feels even more personal. In carving out enough space for herself, Williams has opened more than enough for the listener too. Ahead of her fall tour dates with Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka and an appearance at London's Pitchfork Music Fest in November, Williams joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a rousing conversation. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers.
