In this episode, we're hosting Tom Ruggieri & Rebecca Graff, founders of Fair Share Farm, an organic farm located in Clay County, Missouri. Both Rebecca and Tom left their white-collar jobs in 2000 to find a way to promote community, sustainable agriculture, and healthy eating habits as their livelihood. Fair Share Farm is now operating on land that has been in Rebecca's family for four generations. Organic farming methods replaced conventional agriculture in the Fall of 2002. Soil health is their top priority. To grow the best tasting produce they can, they add organic fertilizer, grow cover crops, balance minerals and spread compost. When dealing with disease and pest pressure, they use products approved for organic production. To limit these pressures, they keep the plants as healthy as possible with daily attention. Join us today to hear about how they have built and perpetuated this thriving organic farm from the ground up! You'll hear: Tom and Rebecca's background before becoming farmers 1:49 When the fermentation facility came on board 9:37 What they prepare with their stoveless kitchen 12:06 Fare Share's philosophy around crop production 18:19 How many of their crops go into a ferment compared to those that go to market 23:54 Size of the Fair Share team 27:19 How Tom and Rebecca manage tasks to ensure everything gets done 36:56 How Fair Share Farm goes about marketing 40:47 What they would change about how they started the farm, given the chance for a do-over 42:11 Rebecca and Tom's advice they would give their past selves at the start of their farming journey 48:19 What brings Tom and Rebecca joy on the farm 57:53 Their favorite farming tools 59:58 About the Guests Fair Share Farm is a diversified vegetable farm located in rural Clay County, Missouri that supplies vegetables for a live-culture fermentation facility on the farm, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables for market sale. Rebecca Graff and Tom Ruggieri farm 20 acres using sustainable practices within the 260-acre Graff family farm. Crops include annual vegetables, strawberries, asparagus, herbs, a flock of 75 laying hens and a small flock of sheep. In 2020 we reconfigured the farm by constructing over 7,000 linear feet of berms and swales to better manage water on the farm and improve our resiliency. Hundreds of chestnuts, persimmons, hazelnuts, paw paws and elderberries were planted as a part of this project. Today's episode is a BEST OF episode, which is a replay of a previously aired episode. Enjoy! FSFS #97 Today I'm talking to a grower who's admittedly "I'm a little bit obsessive about growing high quality produce." It's an obsession that's fueled his farm's growth, and an obsession which is a bit necessary to fuel the farm's growth to bring his fiancé onto the farm full-time. And while Elliot Seldner of Fair Share Farms' obsession may be on growing high quality produce, it's not only on growing high quality produce, because Elliot realized the importance of work-life balance and the need to have a time and place to enjoy the other things created on the farm. Today Elliot is going to talk specifically how they do that, in part by focusing intentionally on making the farm more efficient through appropriate technology, no-till, and optimizing equipment. Elliot's also going to talk about how he and his fiancé are approaching farm transition. Because she's currently employed a schoolteacher, a necessary step in their farm's evolution, but one that's only a step, where the long term goal is to get her onto the farm full time. Looking into the future, it's the farming methods that Emma and Elliot use which will make this all possible, a farm that provides multiple incomes on just over half an acre. Dave Bennett interviews guests Rebecca and Tom from Fair Share Farm in Lawson to discuss the concept of “Natural vs Artificial” foods. Rebecca and Tom each have over 20 years […] The post Sustainable Natural Foods appeared first on KKFI.
Rebecca Graff and Tom Ruggieri raise vegetables for a hundred-member CSA, manage a small laying flock, and operate a cottage-scale fermented food business at Fair Share Farm, 45 minutes north of Kansas City, Missouri. They’ve been farming together on family land since 2004 after meeting in the fields at Peacework Organic Farm in upstate New York. We dig into the nitty gritty of their member-oriented CSA program, and the changes its undergone in the last couple of years as Rebecca and Tom have looked to change the farm’s economic basis and their quality of life. Tom and Rebecca share how they’ve changed their sign-up process and work requirement as their CSA goes through transitions. We also take a hard look at their fermented foods production and how that fits in with their vision for the farm and the CSA model, as well as the efforts they’ve made to reduce the overall ecological footprint of the farm with a solar greenhouse, an electric tractor, and a vigorous cover crop and soil building effort. Join Food Sleuth Radio host and Registered Dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn, for her interview with Tom Ruggieri, M.S., engineer, farmer and fermenter. Ruggieri describes the innovative biological farming methods he uses on his Fair Share Farm and CSA outside Kansas City, MO, and the benefits to soil, climate and community health. Fair Share Farm is unique in that it is a “farm to ferment” operation. Related website: http://fairsharefarm.com/

Given summer heat growing certain crops can be really tough, especially greens. Given the tendency of the normally cool weather lettuces to bolt quickly, turn bitter, and have their foliage burn, many growers simply pass on trying to grow summer greens. The challenges are too great and the returns are too low. But not for all growers. Over the past few weeks I talked to a lot of growers and I tried to track down farmers who were growing greens exceptionally well in some very adverse hot conditions. For today's show I got a group of those growers together and asked them all how their doing it, growing greens during the summer heat. And not just growing them, but growing them very successfully.
