John Ruggeri's office is unlike most others. It does not have traditional air conditioning. But it does have a massive fan. That fan pushes him and his guests through a massive lake surrounded by alligators. He is a captain at Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures and has been taking people on tours of Lake Tohopekaliga for the past 15 years. Florida Fish and Wildlife recently reported Lake Toho, as the locals call it, has 6,316 gators in it. That's the 11th most of any body of water in the state of Florida. With so many, you might think it would be easy to spot an alligator, but Ruggeri told Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden on Florida's Fourth Estate, that spotting one during the late spring and summer months is harder because it's hot and the gators are doing everything they can to stay cool. That includes camping out under lily pads in the shallow area of the lake. So when you think you are looking at a rock, it may just be a 12-foot alligator. Ruggieri, who has been piloting airboats since 2008 said, “It's not so much by training your eye as it is training your brain. Once you can lock in and learn what those signatures are it becomes second nature after that.” Ruggie said his passion for taking pictures of wildlife has also trained him to spot the small eyes and tip of the alligator's nose poking out among the plants in the water. If you hop aboard a ride with Ruggieri you may not come out an expert, but he will use his expert skills to help you spot the wildlife in their natural territory. Don't be surprised when you hear him shouting out, “Hey guys look over here to your right,” “It looks like a rock with eyeballs,” and “That's a gator's head right there” much like he did when he took Matt and Ginger on a ride into natural Florida. You can learn more about Ruggieri, how he went from the Bronx to the Sunshine State, and how he accidentally became an airboat captain when he got here, on Florida's Fourth Estate.   American's 250th birthday or Semiquincentennial will be in two years. Plans are already being made for celebrations around the country. The State Museum in Harrisburg has gotten a head start with an exhibit called Pennsylvania in Watercolor by artist Nick Ruggieri. Ruggieri's project involved visiting all 67 counties to paint a representative scene he chose for each one – often a historic site, natural feature, or signature industry. There's a program at the State Museum this Sunday at 2 p.m. to highlight the exhibit. With us on The Spark Wednesday were Curt Miner, Director of Interpretation and Amy Hammond, Sr. Curator of Cultural History at the State Museum in Harrisburg, who talked about the paintings in the exhibit,"It's really versatile. There's a lot of different perspectives that you can approach this particular collection. I noticed that there were, certain themes that really stood out. Industry, which is one and it is certainly the coal mining, was an important one, but also mills and, some industries that we don't necessarily go to anymore. And there's also transportation. He addressed transportation. There's architecture from the 18th century into the 20th century. There are historic sites that he captured. And, it's really fascinating to see the different things that he was able to find within each county." One of the unique aspects of the paintings is that they were painted with watercolors as Hammond described,"He was really a master watercolor artist. And what I think was appealing about that media was that it's portable. So he did travel to all the counties and he did preliminary sketches, and he brought his watercolors with him because they were easy to take along. And also watercolors is a great media for landscapes because it captures light. And he was able to to manipulate it and paint in a certain way that is sometimes different painting to painting, depending on what he was trying to portray." Miner said Ruggieri was well known in Harrisburg as the art director of the Harrisburg Patriot-News newspaper,"He comes to the Harrisburg area as a 12 year old immigrant from Italy. His father was a shoemaker. Nick is unusually talented at art and he goes to William Penn. Graduates from William Penn High School in Harrisburg, then goes to art school in New York, actually goes to Italy to study as well, and returns in the 1940s to get his first hitch in the newspaper business in Harrisburg. But he develops a very strong attachment to Harrisburg and Pennsylvania. And in 1971, four years, five years out from the Bicentennial, he proposes a project to his publisher, which is this idea of traveling across Pennsylvania and visiting all 67 counties to do one particularly iconic scene for each of those counties. And, this is his passion for four years. Take some four years to complete this, what he ends up with, I think over 80 paintings. So he did two or more for some counties, in particular. And the exhibit premieres at the then William Penn Memorial Museum in September of 1975. It's the first that we're aware of statewide art project completed by a single artist. And it gets rave reviews because Nick understood Pennsylvania as a series of places that were often highly localized."           .Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Heather Ridenoure, Center of Excellence Segment Leader, and Maeve Ruggieri,  the Director of Product at Contigo Health, shine a light on the challenge of employee substance use disorder and the resources available for care. This chronic disease can be caused by adverse childhood events, genetic predisposition, stress, and environmental factors. Contigo addresses any substance that can be abused through their Centers for Excellence program with virtual care and in-person care options where participation is voluntary and can be accessed 24/7. Heather explains, "As far as how frequently this occurs, the newest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control said one in seven people have a substance use disorder. That's new data, and that's been increasing by 30% since the pandemic, which is pretty significant. So, this is one of the reasons we struck out on a journey to try to address some of these issues."   Maeve elaborates, "As Heather mentioned, substance use disorder being a chronic disease, is something that causes clinically significant impairment. Our final episode on Count Ugolino! Yet there's so much left to say. We're going to have to pass on from this ghastly damned soul and let him return to his savage meal of Archbishop Ruggieri's brain.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as I add on the condemnation of Pisa and try to come to terms one last time with this overwhelming figure from the COMEDY, a rival to Ulysses and Francesca in the amount of scholarly ink that has been spilled on their speeches. Here are the segments of this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:43] The passage one more time, but now through its conclusion: INFERNO, Canto XXXIII, lines 1 - 90. If you'd like to read along, print it off, or drop a comment, please go to my website, markscarbrough.com.[08:45] Ugolino points out Ruggieri as the traitor--and not himself![10:37] Ugolino is a master manipulator.[13:04] Ugolino breaks his narrative to 1) absolve himself and 2) aggrandize himself.[16:16] Ugolino breaks his narrative and shows his self-doubt, his humanity, as narcissists often do.[19:05] Ugolino is a bad father, not because he doesn't comfort his sons, but because he turns to silence when he should be helping them pray to prepare for their deaths.[22:29] Everyone debates why Ugolino is in hell, but why exactly is Archbishop Ruggieri in hell?[25:25] Ugolino's dream anticipates the dream sequences in PURGATORIO.[26:35] How can all Pisans deserve death if evil is an individual's choice?[28:49] The condemnation of Pisa is Dante's attempt to bring a deep ambivalence back under control.[32:44] Dante's rage is on full display at the end of Ugolino's monologue.

In this episode, we're hosting Tom Ruggieri & Rebecca Graff, founders of Fair Share Farm, an organic farm located in Clay County, Missouri. Both Rebecca and Tom left their white-collar jobs in 2000 to find a way to promote community, sustainable agriculture, and healthy eating habits as their livelihood. Fair Share Farm is now operating on land that has been in Rebecca's family for four generations.  Organic farming methods replaced conventional agriculture in the Fall of 2002. Soil health is their top priority. To grow the best tasting produce they can, they add organic fertilizer, grow cover crops, balance minerals and spread compost. When dealing with disease and pest pressure, they use products approved for organic production. To limit these pressures, they keep the plants as healthy as possible with daily attention. Join us today to hear about how they have built and perpetuated this thriving organic farm from the ground up!  You'll hear: Tom and Rebecca's background before becoming farmers 1:49 When the fermentation facility came on board 9:37 What they prepare with their stoveless kitchen 12:06 Fare Share's philosophy around crop production 18:19 How many of their crops go into a ferment compared to those that go to market 23:54 Size of the Fair Share team 27:19 How Tom and Rebecca manage tasks to ensure everything gets done 36:56 How Fair Share Farm goes about marketing 40:47 What they would change about how they started the farm, given the chance for a do-over 42:11 Rebecca and Tom's advice they would give their past selves at the start of their farming journey 48:19 What brings Tom and Rebecca joy on the farm 57:53 Their favorite farming tools 59:58   About the Guests Fair Share Farm is a diversified vegetable farm located in rural Clay County, Missouri that supplies vegetables for a live-culture fermentation facility on the farm, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables for market sale.  Rebecca Graff and Tom Ruggieri farm 20 acres using sustainable practices within the 260-acre Graff family farm.  Crops include annual vegetables, strawberries, asparagus, herbs, a flock of 75 laying hens and a small flock of sheep.  In 2020 we reconfigured the farm by constructing over 7,000 linear feet of berms and swales to better manage water on the farm and improve our resiliency. Hundreds of chestnuts, persimmons, hazelnuts, paw paws and elderberries were planted as a part of this project. L'uomo scoppia in lacrime. «Ma dottore,» dice, «Pagliacci sono io.» Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
