In This Podcast: Gigi shares how permaculture extends far beyond gardening into communication, community resilience, and social systems change. From EcoVillage living and military service to composting toilets after Hurricane Helene, Gigi explores earth care, people care, and fair share as a lived philosophy. This conversation dives into resource-based economies, repair culture, and the power of collective action. It's a joyful, grounded exploration of how permaculture shapes both land and relationships..Our Guest: Gigi White was introduced to permaculture and foraging in college at Ithaca, New York in 2007 while studying acting and living at the Eco Village Ithaca. Which launched the rocket ship of figuring out how we can begin to work together in groups to live sustainably. After serving as an officer in the US Air Force with a tour in Iraq, she became a lifelong student of connecting nature to people sustainable. And joyful living through Improvisational music and acting. It includes communication styles, economic systems, animal husbandry, energy design, and community-building—not just food production. How can communities respond sustainably during disasters? After Hurricane Helene disrupted water systems in Asheville, Gigi organized education sessions and materials for composting toilets. By mobilizing volunteers, sourcing buckets and sawdust, and partnering with a local tool library, she helped residents create safe, low-resource sanitation systems. What is humanure and why does it matter?Humanure is composted human waste managed safely through carbon layering (like sawdust) and proper aeration. When done correctly, it becomes soil after about a year in temperate climates, reducing strain on water systems and rebuilding topsoil. How does permaculture apply to social systems?Permaculture extends into communication (including Nonviolent Communication), collective decision-making, barter systems, repair culture, and resource-sharing networks. It asks, “Why are we doing what we're doing?” and challenges systems like planned obsolescence. What lessons come from failure in sustainable...

It's claimed North and West Clare are being denied their fare share of funding for rural projects. Since 2020, the West Clare Municipal District, which encompasses both the Kilrush and Ennistymon Electoral Areas has received just below €12m in grants from the Department of Community and Rural Development. Concern has emerged however, that many key community initiatives are being overlooked such as public realm enhancements proposed for Corofin and Lisdoonvarna and works previously approved in Doolin. Lisdoonvarna Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy says more progress is needed.

Coming off the heels of an already highly partisan, controversial ballot initiative season, Golden State voters are again being presented a choice that will have ramifications for generations to come: The Billionaire Tax Act. During the upcoming general election this fall, California voters will choose whether to impose a one-time 5% tax on residents with net worths over $1 billion, with the goal of raising over $100 billion. California Representative Ro Khanna, a purported 2028 presidential hopeful whose district includes the corporate headquarters of Silicon Valley's elites, like Apple and Intel, has already endorsed the wealth tax. Makes sense? No, not really. California's roughly 200 billionaires, “pay 47% of the taxes that go into the general fund. And what we're doing here in California is we have decided that we need to make a hundred billion dollars, right? And the way to get to it is to create this tax on things that have not been sold yet. So the way to get to it is to do a one time 5% charge on the 200 earners in the state that pay the most in taxes already,” argues Daily Signal California Commentator Elaine Culotti. Wealth inequality is on the rise around the world and right here in Europe. The wealthiest 5 percent of the population in the Eurozone control 45 percent of net household wealth. Just three countries on the continent have imposed a tax on individual net wealth: Norway, Switzerland and EU member state Spain.

Today's discussion was recorded in August of 2025 between me, Nathan Greene, and our returning guest, Dr. Ansel Schiavone. Before we get into today's discussion, I have some updates for you all regarding the show. I have some bittersweet news to share: this is my final episode hosting the podcast. After 178 episodes, I, your host, Nathan Greene, am unfortunately moving on to a new role.I am an inherently curious person, and I love to learn through conversation. This podcast presented a unique opportunity for me to meet many people with interesting ideas and gain insight into how they perceive the world. While I didn't always agree with them, it was always a fascinating conversation nonetheless. I got to speak with thinkers I love, have read about, and even got to reconnect with some I had already met. Needless to say, it was an incredible opportunity.By the time you're hearing this, I will have already begun my new job. My last day with the Henry George School was September 14th, and this will be published shortly after. I hope you all loved listening to the podcast just as much as I enjoyed making it. The show will go on, though. While it may not be me behind the mic, the Henry George School will continue to put out the content you all come to love and expect. The show will be taking a break until next year. They will let you know ahead of time when the show will be back. I'm not too sure when that will be, but I know I will be listening, and I hope you do too. If you want to keep up with me and my work, I will leave some links below to my Twitter, LinkedIn, and Substack. I can't promise I'll be very active on either, though, since this new role will be quite consuming, but a follow is always appreciated, and free. I can not thank everyone who gave me this opportunity enough: from the listeners, to my coworker Kuba who helped me put the episodes out, to Andrada, the president of the school, who trusted me enough to manage the show myself. I am sad that I'm leaving. But I can't wait to see, maybe I should say hear, what the podcast does next. I hope you all are just as excited.Dr. Schiavone is a macroeconomist whose research focuses on inequality and structural change. He has worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the International Labor Organization. He has published numerous articles in journals such as Economic Modeling, Metroeconomica, and Regional Studies. Dr. Schiavone is an Assistant Professor at St. John's University where he teaches microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the economics of poverty and inequality. He earned his bachelor's from Dennison University and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah, both in economics. Together, we discussed why workers are receiving a smaller and smaller share of what they produce, some of the policies recently passed to try and correct this inequality, and why certain critiques of globalization may not be unfair. This is your host, Nathan Greene, signing off for the last time. Stay curious and keep searching for the truth. It may not be what you expect, but nothing ever is in this world. To check out more of our content, including our research and policy tools, visit our website: https://www.hgsss.org/Nathan's Links:Twitter: https://x.com/Nathan_Greene16LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathan-greene-596466171/Substack: https://nathangreene1620.substack.com/

The lads are back in the studio and delighted to welcome back Ronan Kelly of All Points Fibre Network. APFN is a UK wholesale fibre provider, so they start by finding out more about the company and how it fits into the broader market. Discussion turns to the broader economics of fibre and the UK's very competitive environment before they eventually turn to the perennial topic of ‘fair share' contributions to network costs by US Big Tech and conclude with a Scott rant about the Online Safety Act.

Gary comments on several news items, including a real head-scratcher where some liberals want to say babies in the womb are citizens, despite the fact that they will argue in other situations that the "fetus" is not actually a human baby. Apparently the mother's intention is what creates or negates the humanity of what's in her womb.

Karl Sjogren, author of The Fairshare Model, believes the key lies in a revolutionary approach to startup funding—one that reimagines IPOs with a performance-based structure to better align the interests of investors and entrepreneurs. As Karl explained in today's episode, the conventional approach to valuing startups is fraught with uncertainty. “No one knows how to value a startup reliably,” he said. This uncertainty creates two major risks for investors: failure risk, which includes market readiness and product viability, and valuation risk, which Karl describes as “the risk of overpaying for a position.” While venture capitalists often mitigate valuation risk with deal terms, Karl's Fairshare Model brings a similar approach to the IPO market, offering a fairer, more transparent system for everyone involved. The Fairshare Model introduces a dual-class stock structure. Investors receive tradable shares, while founders and employees receive performance-based shares that only convert to tradable stock upon achieving defined milestones. These milestones could vary widely, from reaching sales targets to demonstrating social impact, such as measurable environmental benefits. Karl explained, “The Fairshare Model doesn't reduce failure risk, but it dramatically can reduce valuation risk.”This model not only empowers investors but also incentivizes founders and employees to deliver results. Karl likened the conventional IPO structure to a balloon filled with uncertainty. In his analogy, traditional models place certainty on ownership, leaving performance uncertain. The Fairshare Model flips this dynamic, putting the weight of certainty on performance instead. The implications of this approach are profound. By creating a framework that ties rewards to outcomes, the Fairshare Model offers a path to reduce speculation and foster trust between entrepreneurs and investors. It's a bold vision that could reshape how startups raise capital—and how capitalism itself operates.Karl's book, The Fairshare Model, is available on Amazon, and he's actively sharing insights on LinkedIn. He's also working with a Bay Area company that plans to implement the Fairshare Model in an upcoming modular housing IPO.If you're as intrigued as I am, I encourage you to explore Karl's ideas and see how they might apply to your own ventures.tl;dr:Today's episode introduces Karl Sjogren's Fairshare Model, a performance-based structure for venture-stage IPOs.Karl highlights two major risks for investors: failure risk and valuation risk, and how to address them. The Fairshare Model uses dual-class stock, aligning rewards with performance milestones.Karl's superpower is simplifying complex concepts, making them accessible with analogies like a balloon metaphor. The episode underscores the potential of the Fairshare Model to reshape capitalism and startup funding. How to Develop Simplifying Complex Ideas As a SuperpowerKarl Sjogren's superpower is his ability to make complex, technical concepts accessible and engaging. As Karl explained, “My superpower is the ability to take something that's complex, somewhat differently than other people would, and to break it down in a way that is accessible to others.” This skill allows him to connect with audiences unfamiliar with the intricacies of capital markets, effectively translating his insights into actionable ideas.Karl shared a vivid analogy from his book to illustrate the Fairshare Model's novel capital structure. He described a balloon filled with uncertainty, where traditional IPOs place certainty on ownership, leaving performance ambiguous. The Fairshare Model reverses this, focusing certainty on performance outcomes. This analogy, he said, helped readers grasp the model's core idea. His ability to use relatable metaphors like this showcases his knack for making complex ideas intuitive and memorable.Tips for Developing This Superpower:Be specific about your goals and audience when explaining complex topics.Use analogies or metaphors to simplify abstract ideas.Write concisely—ensure every word serves a purpose.Address potential objections or concerns to anticipate your audience's questions.Break down problems into manageable parts, focusing on clarity and relevance.By following Karl's example and advice, you can make simplifying complex ideas a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileKarl Sjogren (he/him):Author, Fairshare ModelAbout Fairshare Model: "The Fairshare Model" is Karl Sjogren's 2019 book. It describes a performance-based capital structure for raising venture capital via an initial public offering. Later this year, a startup in the modular housing space expects to be the first company to use it. Karl is eager to engage with accredited investors who may have interest in bridging the startup to its IPO. He also wants to connect with entrepreneurs that may want to consider having their own Fairshare Model IPO.Website: fairsharemodel.comBiographical Information: Karl Sjogren has been a consulting CFO in the SF Bay Area for over 30 years. From 1996 to 2001, he was CEO of Fairshare, Inc., an online community of average investors that sought to make it less expensive for companies to market investor-friendly IPOs. If a company had a legal offering, passed a diligence review, used the Fairshare Model deal structure, and allowed Fairshare members to invest as little as $100, Fairshare would let the company pitch its deal for free. A forerunner to the concept of "equity crowdfunding," Fairshare attracted 16,000 members and substantially more visitors to its education -oriented website before shutting down after the dotcom and telecom busts.Passage of the JOBS Act in 2011 led Karl to feel the time had come for something like Fairshare to do well, but did not have the energy to do so. Besides, he expected some of the new JOBS Act platforms to adopt some of Fairshare's ideas. But the innovation he saw focused on new ways to sell stock. He was more interested in new ways to structure a venture round. And so, he decided to write a book, The Fairshare Model.
