A lot of companies use positive-sounding cliches like “people over profit” and “work-life balance”. This sounds good, until somebody pulls the sales reports and says “we need more revenue and profits”. Then, the bottom line becomes the bottom line. This is sometimes served with a side of “you come to work to do work, change the world on your own time”.Now, picture a model where putting people over profit actually increases profits. Where work-life balance is not measured using number of hours worked or percentage of time in the office vs. working remotely. Being involved with a company that breaks the rules and norms for its industry, where coming to work to do work means doing your part to change the world.Christian Agulles has created all of these things in an industry known for squeezing its engineers like getting that last drop out of the toothpaste tube.Born and raised in College Point, a little town in Queens, Christian was a devout Catholic who went to church, went to Catholic school, and had the whole Catholic experience that, as he describes it, formed him and scarred him at the same time. His father, a police officer, was shot in the line of duty when Christian was seven. Even being able to retire on three-quarters pension, that money didn't go far supporting a family including Christian and his two younger brothers. His mother went to work in the school cafeteria so she could align her schedule with her sons, and cleaned houses on weekends. By example, she taught Christian to not be afraid to do hard things and to do them with grace. While starting his family, Christian spent the first 20 years of his career with an engineering firm that moved him around the country to open new offices. But over those 20 years, his employer was repeatedly acquired and evolved into company that focused more on acquisition, revenue, and EBIDA. It was right around this time he was recruited to join PAE. Everything worked out fine, yes? Well, Fine is a 4-Letter Word. Did his moment of realization come from a coaching session at PAE with Sandy Lindstrom, known for the “polishing the diamond” principle, where he found out they did not feel he was very good at delivering feedback? Was it discovering that his foundational values around doing hard work with grace could be merged with volunteerism, altruism, and contribution? In a moment, when I bring Christian on, he's going to guide us through his experience leading a Certified B-Corporation and how he's taken one of their metrics – utilization – and redefined it to build PAE into a company that has a net positive impact not only on its employees, but on society as a whole. If, up until now, you've seen your best-laid plans get trumped by “the bottom line” when bills are due, this could be what you need to hear. Christian's hype songs are "Bring It On Home To Me" by Sam Cooke and "Right to Be Wrong" by Joss Stone.Resources:Christian Agulles' website: https://www.pae-engineers.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-j-agulles/Invitation from Lori:This episode is sponsored by Zen Rabbit. Smart business leaders know trust is the foundation of every great workplace. Brian chats with Masami Sato, founder and CEO of B1G1 (Buy1GIVE1), a Certified B Corporation that empowers businesses to make giving an inherent part of every business transaction. As an experienced social entrepreneur and speaker, Masami champions the "Power of Small" -- the belief that even the smallest acts of giving, when done consistently and collectively, can create meaningful change. In this episode, Masami shares how her entrepreneurial spirit drove her to create B1G1 and how staying rooted in her mission helped her build a business that supports more than 450 high-impact projects across 50 countries. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses keep showing up for their purpose. Masami believes that every founder can start a business with an idea to solve a particular challenge or address an opportunity. However, mission-driven businesses stay committed to their original purpose over time. “Mission-driven businesses continue to show up and make decisions based on that original mission, rather than getting sidetracked by all other things,” Masami said. A strong mission can't be replaced. Today's entrepreneurs have a unique opportunity to lead with their mission, according to Masami, since it's one part of the business that can't be replicated or automated by AI. The mission is also what attracts aligned customers, team members, and partners to the company. “Mission is the part that cannot be replaced by other things,” Masami said. “That's where the greatest opportunity lies.” Start small and build a consistent impact. Masami's mission for B1G1 actually started as a question: What if every time business is done, something great happens to create a better world collectively? As the owner of a food company at the time, Masami's answer was to donate one meal for every meal she sold. That small act grew into a much larger business idea and led Masami to create a platform of impact-driven business entrepreneurs who integrate impact and kindness into their everyday business actions. “We realized that there is opportunity for other businesses like us,” Masami said. “Over the last nearly 18 years, businesses working with us have created more than 365 million impacts in the world.” Letting go is different than giving up. Masami shared her powerful story of resilience, including starting a business while raising a newborn, navigating financial hardship, and even giving birth to her second child in her commercial kitchen sink. Her turning point came when she chose to let go of her growing food business in order to fully commit to B1G1. “Letting go and giving up are different things,” she said. “I decided to sell our business and put everything into this idea to start the B1G1 enterprise.” Resources + Links Ashlee Sang: Website, LinkedIn, X B1G1:  Website, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, YouTube Brian Thompson Financial: Website, Newsletter, Podcast Follow Brian Thompson Online: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Forbes About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast  Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and Certified Financial Planner® who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. Today's conversation with Dr. Bill Rawls and Braden Rawls is about understanding health at a cellular level.Dr. Bill Rawls is a licensed physician with over 30 years of experience in medicine. After facing a personal health crisis in his early forties, he turned to herbal and alternative medicine, restoring his health and becoming a leading voice in holistic wellness. He is the bestselling author of "The Cellular Wellness Solution," and serves as the Medical Director and Co-Founder of Vital Plan, a holistic health company and Certified B Corporation.Braden Rawls is the CEO and other Co-Founder of Vital Plan, a company she established with her father, Dr. Bill Rawls, in 2008. Under her leadership, Vital Plan has developed meticulously crafted supplement blends using the highest quality ingredients, aiming to empower individuals to take control of their health. The reason I reached out to them is that the information in Dr. Rawl's book “The Cellular Wellness Solution” had me buzzing from all that I learned because it made so much sense and provided a missing puzzle piece in my healing journey.I've been battling a couple autoimmune diseases for about fifteen years, and in that time, I've seen at least a dozen different endocrinologists, and each and every one of them told me that healing my own autoimmune condition was impossible. All solutions they offered ultimately led to surgically remove my thyroid or killing it through radioactive iodine. A major vital organ. And, I was unwilling to accept this route as a real solution (for me), and so I spent years reading books to learn as much as I could about thyroid health.Fast forward to today, and without medication, all of my thyroid levels are back in the normal range - because of what I've learned about healing through diet, lifestyle and herbal supplements. This is not medical advice. The information and opinions presented in this podcast are for generational informational purposes only and do not constitute medical advice. As the founder and CEO of CoPeace Capital, he's on a mission to use investing as a force for good, ensuring that more people—especially those historically excluded from wealth-building opportunities—can participate in equity investing.“Many communities have not had the access to growing their wealth through equity investing,” Craig explained. “And the crowdfunding platforms allow that to happen.”CoPeace, a Certified B Corporation and Public Benefit Corporation, has been actively raising capital from the crowd, successfully leveraging Regulation Crowdfunding to fuel its impact-driven investments. By embracing this approach, CoPeace is not only funding its own growth but also identifying promising companies that align with its mission. The company has already invested in businesses focused on sustainable infrastructure and social impact, proving that financial returns and positive change can coexist.Craig emphasized that success in impact crowdfunding isn't automatic—it requires effort, strategy, and community engagement. “The number one learning is that it's not magic. It takes work to develop the crowd that might want to invest in what you're doing.”A common misconception about impact investing is that it requires sacrificing returns. Craig challenges that notion, pointing out that market-based returns are not only possible but often stronger when companies prioritize sustainability and long-term value creation. “Not only are we seeing kind of market-based returns, but the data is showing that it is a good business decision to care about the future of our world,” he said. With plans to launch a larger fund, CoPeace Capital is expanding its ability to invest in high-impact businesses while continuing to make equity investing more accessible. Craig's leadership in this space demonstrates that with the right approach, anyone can leverage capital to drive meaningful change. For those looking to align their investments with their values, CoPeace offers a compelling example of how financial success and social impact can go hand in hand.tl;dr:* Craig Jonas, CEO of CoPeace Capital, discusses using impact investing to democratize access to wealth-building opportunities.* He shares insights from CoPeace's successful Regulation Crowdfunding campaign and how it supports mission-aligned businesses.* Craig challenges the misconception that impact investing requires sacrificing financial returns, highlighting data that supports market-based gains.* He explains his superpower, empathic awareness, and how it shapes his leadership and investment strategies.* Craig offers practical advice for developing empathic awareness, emphasizing active listening, reflection, and immersing oneself in diverse environments. How to Develop Empathic Awareness As a SuperpowerCraig's superpower is empathic awareness—the ability to perceive and deeply understand the emotions and perspectives of others.Craig describes this skill as an essential part of navigating the impact investing space. "I think my superpower is empathic awareness and the ability to kind of perceive what others are thinking," he shared. By listening intently to stakeholders, investors, and the communities CoPeace serves, Craig ensures that their needs and concerns shape the company's mission and strategy. One powerful example of Craig's empathic awareness took place during his time as a basketball coach in post-apartheid South Africa. Selected as the first American coach to work in the townships, he recalls sensing the fear and hesitation in the eyes of young players as he entered their community. By being present, acknowledging their lived experiences, and creating a space of mutual trust, he fostered a meaningful connection that made the basketball clinic not only a success but also a transformational moment for everyone involved.Craig believes that developing empathic awareness requires intentional effort. His tips include:* Pause and Reflect: Before reacting, take an extra moment to consider the perspectives of others.* Engage in New Environments: Step outside your comfort zone by immersing yourself in different cultures and communities.* Observe Role Models: Identify and learn from individuals who demonstrate deep empathy in their interactions.* Listen Actively: Focus on understanding rather than responding—allow people to share their experiences fully.By following Craig's example and advice, you can make empathic awareness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Along with his team, Joshua has partnered with US Bank, John Deere, Procter & Gamble, Nelnet, Ameritas, Omaha Public Power District, Farm Credit Services of America, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska, among others. As business challenges become increasingly complex, the transformative power of doing good in business creates a flywheel effect that impacts both Return on Investment (ROI) and Ripples of Impact (ROI). Joshua challenges business leaders to think bigger and more intentionally to discover the expansive value of using business for good. Episode Insight: I believe you already have what you need deep inside of you to create this difference in the world, and you've had it there from the start. Something natural, authentic—nativus—naïve. Background: Have you ever been called naïve for suggesting that businesses can do more good and have a positive impact on not only profits but also employees, consumers, and the world? Joshua Berry has. I met Joshua at the ROI of Why conference in Lincoln, NE, where I heard him speak on using naivety to drive curiosity, innovation and growth. During the episode, Joshua and I discuss his book, Dare to be Naïve: How to Find Your True Self in a Noisy World, and why focusing on being a business for good benefits all stakeholders. We discuss how more and more employees, customers, and business leaders agree that how and why money is made is increasingly as important as how much money is made. Yet business leaders often fear being labeled as naïve if they pursue social good while pursuing profit. That fear can be paralyzing, ultimately keeping them from sharing – and acting on – their biggest and best ideas. Joshua also shares his vision of becoming employee-owned and how he's setting the stage in unconventional ways. Have a listen and let me know what you think! Brian chats with Amanda Wilson, the co-founder of #open, a dating app for ethically non-monogamous relationships. On the episode, Amanda opens up about the fear she faced pivoting from running political campaigns to launching a sex-positive tech business with her business and life partner. She also shares essential strategies and tactics for navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship and how she utilizes AI to fuel growth and innovation at #open. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses balance making money with benefiting society. Amanda defines a mission-driven business as one that doesn't just focus on finances as the number one goal. As part of making #open a mission-driven business, Amanda is setting up the company to become a Certified B Corporation, which requires balancing making money with the responsibility to benefit society. “Our mission is to create safer spaces for marginalized and at-risk communities to form authentic connections,” Amanda said. “That's exceptionally important to us because we are a dating app for people that are in ethically non-monogamous relationships, which is still a hard road for people who are doing that.” Keep your customers safe. One of the goals of #open is to build a safe space for the sex-positive community. To do that, the company makes it a point to listen to its user base, including by talking to customers through the #open support team and by reading app store reviews. Amanda also says the company prioritizes safety through data privacy. “Your data is just an extension of you, so your data needs to be treated as respectfully as we would treat another person standing right here in front of us,” Amanda said. “#Open can always strive to be a safer place.” Use AI to improve your human touch. Amanda sees the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a way to improve the personal touch of businesses and marketing strategies. For instance, #open reviews every picture that goes inside its app, and AI can help flag images that may break the company's content policies. Also, Amanda uses an AI transcription tool to review her podcast interviews and find points she can improve upon for next time. “AI definitely helps us to be able to have that personal touch,” she said. “Building our community is one of the strategies and tactics we use.” Hire your potential customers. #Open emphasizes hiring people within the community they're serving, so that the people creating the tools can better understand the dynamics around the software's real-world use. “We try and hire as many women and other marginalized people as we can,” Amanda said. “My one request is if we can get more women in tech, life would be so much better for so many people.” Resources + Links B Corp Certification Otter.AI Amanda Wilson: LinkedIn #open: Website, Instagram, Facebook, X, Tumblr, YouTube Brian Thompson Financial: Website, Newsletter, Podcast Follow Brian Thompson Online: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Forbes About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. Dean set out to prove coffee around the world could be bought, sold, and delivered to our cups without compromising the health and well-being of people and the planet. Dean offered his answer to the industry and consumers alike, to the question, what makes great coffee? This episode mixes tasting with the very tactical of how we get from bean (or cherry, rather) to finished brew.   We'll talk organic coffee farming, the role of coffee cooperatives, the significance of fair trade, and also, when you should or shouldn't put cream and sugar in your morning cup.  -- --  ⭐️ *SPONSORED BY* Transform - https://www.transform.global/  A Good Company - https://www.agood.com/ Intrepid Travel -  https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us Bodhi Surf Yoga - https://www.bodhisurfyoga.com/ -- --

How do you fund a solar project? What about the business operations costs necessary to get the project going to begin with? What structures can you consider, and HOW do you choose the one that's right for you? We're pulling back the veil so you don't have to wander in the darkness here. The business of developing solar power projects is complex, time-consuming, and capital intensive. And for the last decade, hundreds of entrepreneurs have endeavored to apply their creative efforts and work ethic towards solving both the development of the solar projects (not dissimilar to other land-based development deals tbh) and the financing of them. The latter has proven the more arduous to accomplish as the solar industry had to earn its keep in the world of high finance and prove that the product and its cashflow was durable and risk-mitigated. Unsurprisingly, those who have fared the best are those professionals who were already working in finance in some way, and were able to turn their focus and skills to solving the dual issue facing solar developers - how to get an individual project financed, and how to raise enough working capital to pay the team developing those projects until they could get to cashflow. Today, you'll hear hown one such company, Encore Renewable Energy, transformed from a traditional solar project developer into a vertically-integrated Independent Power Producer (IPP), ie a project Owner & OPerator, and along the way made the choice to become a Certified B Corporation. Their impact-focused business strategy, exemplifies the transformative power of renewable energy towards the triple bottom line - People, Planet, and Profits. The company strategically channels its efforts into solar development, storage solutions, agrivoltaics, and brownfield redevelopment, showcasing a multifaceted commitment to sustainable practices. Moreover, they have successfully secured a remarkable $150 million in equity funding. Today, you'll learn a whole lot more about what that means, and how you might be able to do similarly in your own venture.Blake Sturcke, the co-CEO of Encore, delves into his journey of discovering a passion for solar, drawing on his background in investment banking and entrepreneurship.Blake discusses how Encore melds their sustainable mission with practical management strategies, the different investment structures available, insightful capital raising options, and a deeply rooted work culture that celebrates diversity and psychological safety. On this final point, Blake goes deeper still, opening up about his personal experiences dealing with mental health challenges. This vulnerable exchange is particularly near to Blake's own mission, and he hopes to normalize the topic of mental health awareness and create a safe space for employees to voice their struggles. This conversation isn't only vital for those in the renewable energy field, but also illuminates the possibility of merging success with mental wellbeing in any high-pressure corporate setting.
