This episode finds us hitting the home stretch of Black History Month, which means it's time to get moving and support Milwaukee's Black-owned restaurants (something we should do year-round). Ann gave us all a helping hand by putting together a sizable list for Milwaukee Magazine that includes everything from soul food to barbecue and Ethiopian to Jamaican.Toward the end of the podcast, we also highlight a pair of cookbooks from Black women that literally span more than a century: a new edition of Malinda Russell's A Domestic Cookbook (first published in 1866) and a compilation of Gullah Geechee recipes collected by Emily Meggett, who was 89 when the book came out in 2022.In other culinary news from around Milwaukee:The mad scientists at Discourse are serving up real ants on a log right downstairs from where I'm writing this at Radio Milwaukee.Milwaukee Public Market will hold a very rhyme-y Soup, Stew & Brew Fest on March 5.Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite will again welcome a bunch of their famous chef buddies for a collaborative dinner series at Dandan and EsterEv.Fuel Cafe officially hit empty after aprubtly announcing its permanent closing Sunday.Milwaukee's oldest Black biker bar has shifted gears and will soon become Cajun Soul MKE.

Steve and Adam recorded this episode live at Fuel Cafe with Alyssa Weninger, the Catering and Events Manager, and one of Fuel's regulars, Evan. The four of us talk through the vibe at Fuel Cafe and how to experience the place like a regular, even if you've never been there. From brunch to nightlife, what's the best way to dive into Fuel Cafe? How do you navigate the cafe / bar / restaurant? What if you want to host an event there? From our experience, most days Fuel Cafe is a pretty chill place. Even a spot to open a laptop and get some work done. But we definitely learned how rowdy it can get - take a listen for more on that! Experience Milwaukee has its home studio in Transfer Pizzeria Cafe. Our official beer partner is New Barons Brewing Cooperative. We are sponsored in part by VISIT Milwaukee. And don't forget to check out our daily text at TextMKE.com. Thanks for listening. Love you, Milwaukee.

A few years ago, before the chaos of COVID-19, I used to post up at this place named Fuel Cafe. Every Thursday, I'd go, sip on some beer or coffee and write. Naturally, I became known as a regular and met interesting people. One of those interesting people is Jesus Gonzalez. When I met Jesus, he had just opened up Mazorca Tacos, a food truck selling tacos made out of handmade tortillas. About a year later, he co-founded Zocalo Food Park, the first food park in Wisconsin. At some point, he also opened up a commissary kitchen. And if that wasn't enough, he's an investor in the semi-new startup Cashdrop, a mobile app that enables any business to create and manage an online storefront from their phone.Did you get all of that? Yeah, Jesus has plenty on his plate — no pun intended. With a bio like that, you'd think this interview is about food or business... But nope. We barely discuss any of that.Instead, I decided to dig deep into decisions he made before his business ventures. How did he set himself up to seize so many opportunities?A key decision he credits to changing his life forever was moving to New York, and later Spain after high school.Years later, he returned to his hometown fully equipped to start his slew of businesses. In this interview, we talk about internal realizations, generational patterns, and confronting the fear of the unknown as we discuss Jesus' journey.Enjoy the food for thought and good vibes from Jesus Gonzalez.PS — Get some Coffee TalkNote: Complete episode notes with useful links can be found on the website.-----Instagram: @luiscreates @enemywithinyouWebsite: https://enemywithinyou.com
I sat down w noise artist Peter J. Woods, who runs the experimental promotion organization FTAM. He also plays bass in noise rock band Credentials, curates Milwaukee Noise Fest, and regularly books shows at the Jazz Gallery. His latest solo effort "Shorter Flagpoles" may be found on Bandcamp. We discussed Peter's origins playing music, the defiance of cultural context that comes w noise music, how FTAM started, Milwaukee's noise/experimental scene then and now, and the spaghettini at Fuel Cafe. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ben-slowey/support

Being a merchant of wow in this 'experience economy'. Great lessons from my encounter with Fuel Cafe in South Brisbane. It really is the 'experience economy' so let's make sure we are focussing on the experience and not just the product we are selling.
On today's show: Grizz Training Camp starting soon and the building of the roster, Josh Gordon and teams holding players accountable (10:30). Alexis Morgan joins the show in-studio and brings Don Gaines (IG: @thatvegandude) from Fuel Cafe with her for Vegan Corner (45:00). After that, we'll have the rest of our entertainment report on Maroon 5, Jimmy Butler and more (1:31:22).
Neil talks about his business Fuel Cafe and where it all began, Neil also talks about being diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and how that has affected the way runs his business.
Well everyone in Milwaukee- Have fun at Mama Tried and Flat Out Friday. In Cali - hope you can make it to Art Ride CA. One of us will be at each of those events. Hope to see you there. Part 1: Wiggins is out, Mrs. Riding is in. I talk with my wife about motorcycles. As a non-rider, we'll discuss some terms that non-riders might hear thrown around. Part 2: Scoots - Steady Garage (www.steadygarage.com) has proven that scooters and light weight bikes can be fast and fun. Since my wife has expressed an interest in riding recently, I want to see what she would deem appropriate for her needs. She wants a scooter, so we go through a few. Part 3: Wiggins checks in from the road. I help keep him awake on his trip to Milwaukee. Does he make it? I hope you had fun at Fuel Cafe wit the Milwaukee Rivets. The 'Gram was alight with party scenes and revelry by all in attendance. Rusty Butcher showed up to rip it inside, and a mini bike was jumped off the actual bar. Have a great weekend. Check out our mugs on Zazzle, and stick around for more.
