Ben Howe's brewing career reads more like that of a chef than a typical brewer—stints in Denmark, brewing jobs on both the East and West coasts, weeks spent interning at breweries that intrigued him—but one fateful visit to the Zehender brewery in Monchsambach opened his eyes to Franconian lager and inspired a nearly decade-long quest to understand the beer and its mechanisms of flavor. More recently at Otherlands (https://www.otherlandsbeer.com), he's pushed boundaries of accepted brewing dogma, mashing with pH levels far past any sensible range in an effort to build color and flavor—and the things that shouldn't work still obviously do work. In this episode, Howe discusses both his traditional methods and modern concessions, including: learning from Will Meyers and Megan Parisi at Cambridge Brewing capturing Franconian-ness in long-boiled lager beers old-style vs. new-style German lager brewing kräusening to carbonate rather than spunding before terminal never raising the temperature for a diacetyl rest while using ALDC to control precursors finding color with only pilsner malt hardening water for lager brewing with calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and gypsum mashing above 5.8 pH maintaining atmospheric pressure for yeast during fermentation boiling large amounts of low-alpha hops for a long time to build flavor and texture And more. This year marks the 25th birthday of Simcoe, and when Russian River (https://www.russianriverbrewing.com/) cofounder Vinnie Cilurzo suggested recording an episode of the podcast in Yakima to celebrate it, we weren't going to say no. Rather than sit around a table, we took to the experimental hop rows at Perrault Farms (https://www.perraultfarms.com/) and recorded while walking the field. The result is a wide-ranging conversation that covers history, business, agriculture, creativity, pivotal craft beers, hop evolution, and more. In this episode, Cilurzo and Perrault discuss: how Simcoe was bred by pioneering hop breeder Chuck Zimmerman its establishment on three family farms at the time—Carpenter, Perrault, and Smith how Simcoe brought the families' kids back to the farms developing the Pliny the Elder recipe around this hop the evolution of Simcoe over the past quarter century virus-free Simcoe and its flavor and yield impacts the impact of pick date on Simcoe flavor and aroma Simcoe's relationship with Mosaic selecting Simcoe and processing it into modern flowable formats how Pliny the Elder and the new Simcoe 25 beer use Simcoe in new formats And more. At Craft Coast (https://craftcoast.co) in Oceanside and San Marcos, California, Blake Masoner is happy if you show up for tacos and stay for a beer. The fairly priced tacos are scratch-made, down to the tortillas themselves, packing loads of flavor into every bite. Fellow San Diego–area brewers refer to them as “The best tacos between here and Tijuana”—but the beer they brew here is anything but an afterthought. Eight medals in four years at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festical—in competitive categories such as hazy pale ale, American IPA, and international pilsener—are evidence of the brewery's ambition on the quality side, and they've modified both classic and modern brewing techniques to serve their flavor and aroma goals. In this episode, Masoner discusses: abandoning a “no core beer” policy to keep customers happy brewing Mexican-style dark lager with dry yeast and vorlauf-only dark malts mitigating sulfur production with 34/70 yeast Australian-inspired XPA design without Southern Hemisphere hops using Mosaic at different times for different effects in West Coast IPA knockout hopping to find the true heart of new varieties pinpointing flavors through dry hopping building a team-wide winning mindset And more. Before joining Threes (https://threesbrewing.com), Josh Penney spent the better part of a decade brewing in Southern California, with nearly half of that time at hoppy-lager innovators Highland Park. Now at the helm of Threes in Brooklyn, he's taking the knowledge he built in lager fermentation and layering in hops of various formats to create beers that pop from the package and the glass. In this episode, Penney discusses: the preservative power of lager fermentation and modern hop products in hop-forward styles building hazy IPA to evoke “hop ice cream” that doesn't feel heavy or sweet using flowable hop products during active fermentation using thiol-enriched hops such as Freestyle's Mega Motueka selecting for positive characteristics in New Zealand hops optimizing contact time with Southern Hemisphere hops adding terpenes during active fermentation and building deeper flavor blends with advanced hop products fermentation profiles that optimize dry yeast performance adjusting the timing of diacetyl rests based on dry-hopping regimens And more. The Untappd Community Awards offer an interesting barometer of consumer excitement around breweries and beers, but for Noble Savage (https://www.noblesavagebrews.com) in Glen Cove—east of New York City, on Long Island—landing two beers among the top three hazy IPAs in the United States (https://awards.untappd.beer/region/united-states/?_sort_001=meta_value_num_desc&_beer_styles=ipa-new-england-hazy) proved quite an accomplishment. Founder and head brewer Frank Bilello has kept things small, tinkering as he goes and using an unusual creative process; his milky-pale beers get little to no boil and showcase the delicate yet pungent notes of New Zealand hops. In this episode, Bilello discusses: using 100 percent New York–grown craft malt for all his beers employing large amounts of malted wheat, flaked oats, and malted oats to soften hazy IPA mouthfeel managing pH in the mash for function and flavor making on-the-fly decisions about hopping while brewing blending yeast strains for flavor and attenuation staging dry hopping with a sacrificial round to pull out larger particulate matter before hitting with a harder second round Enigma's benefit as a hot-side hop and Southern Cross in the dry hop minimizing boils to lower heat stress, retain more protein, and keep the color light using New Zealand hops almost exclusively for hazy IPA spunding IPA for natural carbonation And more. We are bringing you a special episode, as our friends at Strata return to the podcast. You might remember our interview from Season 8 with Eric Olden, Co-founder & CEO of the company. Eric took us through the creation story of the company. Today, we will be talking with Granville Schmidt, Chief Architect at Strata, who has been instrumental in architecting and building identity orchestration for AI agents from the ground up. In our chat, we are going to be discussing how the enterprises need to take advantage of identify for agents, and can do so seamlessly, no matter their level of tech debt, disconnection, or complex migration path.QuestionsLet's break down Identity Orchestration for our audience. Can you explain what it is and walk us through a real customer scenario where it made a huge differenceEnterprises have accumulated decades of identity tech debt. What are the main problems identity orchestration solves for companies trying to modernize?I noticed you work with customers in what you call DDIL environments - disconnected, disrupted, intermittent, and limited bandwidth scenarios. Can you help us understand what these environments look like in practice and why identity becomes such a critical challenge there? You've pioneered Identity Orchestration for AI Agents. What was the moment when you realized AI agents needed a fundamentally different approach to identity management?Imagine a company with 1,000 employees but 50,000 AI agents running autonomously. This week's podcast episode is a little different. It's just me, opening up about what I've been noticing in our strata space, and in my own life and business. I'm sharing the personal choices I've made to protect my health, my relationships, and my time, while still running a thriving business I love. If you've ever felt stretched too thin or wondered if there's a better way forward, I think this episode will resonate with you. And if you're ready to go deeper, join my free online training this Thursday, 4 September. Your access to that is in this episode. ( This episode was recorded prior to yesterday's SCA(NSW) announcement about banning insurance commissions. Yes, the timing is uncanny. As I say in the podcast: it's just the universe, doing what it does best )
Making beer commercially in New York City is so difficult that it all but stopped until the previous decade's craft-beer boom rekindled the fire. Today, about 40 breweries make beer in the city, but doing so comes with its own set of rules. Beyond the regulatory and logistical hurdles, there's an underlying creative challenge: NYC is the culinary capital of the United States, and competition for space on bar and restaurant menus is pitched. Without great beer, great branding, a point of view, and a way to generate new and engaging stories, it's easy for a brewery to get lost in the noise. That's why KCBC (https://kcbcbeer.com)—opened in 2016 by homebrewers-turned-pros in the vibrantly diverse Bushwick neighborhood—leans into the city's energy with graphic storytelling through branding, and with a constantly shifting lineup that tells interesting tales about the wider world of beer. In this episode, cofounder Tony Bellis and head brewer Bobby Rolandi discuss: brewing hazy IPA with Voss kveik rather than more popular strains drier New England–style IPAs with finishing gravities around 3.5°P (1.014) developing three distinct templates for hazy IPA recipes avoiding chewier grains such as oats in favor of flaked and malted wheat fermenting cooler and with a cooler dry hop for smoother extraction achieving modern flavors in West Coast–style IPAs using classic hops experimenting with hops and fermentation in the lager space using 34/70 for IPA fermentation while using a Budvar-derived strain for lagers And more. Ben Clayton of Brooklyn's Test (https://www.thetestbrewery.com) honed his approach to brewing while working in the context of a Michelin-starred restaurant in New York City. Today, building a deep, meaningful supply chain for interesting ingredients animates him more than lighting up the beer-trading boards. Australia’s strata sector is under pressure — and it's no longer a niche issue. Following high-profile investigations by Four Corners and 7.30 Report, strata governance failures, building defects, and financial blowouts are now front and centre. With more Australians living in apartments and townhouses than ever before, what happens next in this space will impact millions. In this episode, Kate McHugh, co-founder of the Strata Futures Stakeholder Engagement and Roundtable, joins us to unpack what’s driving the crisis—and what needs to change. Drawing from her work on the Strata Futures Report, Kate outlines the six key reform pillars that emerged from cross-sector collaboration, covering everything from governance and professional standards to owner advocacy and sustainability. We explore how opaque commissions, underfunded capital works, power imbalances, and a fragmented regulatory system are eroding trust in strata—and why many apartment owners are left feeling blindsided by defects and skyrocketing levies. Kate also shares what it would take for the sector to turn itself around—before government intervention does it for them. Whether you're a strata owner, buyer, investor, or professional, this episode offers critical insight into the future of high-density living in Australia. With a background in governance, policy, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement, Kate works at the intersection of lived experience and systemic reform in Australia’s strata sector. Partnering with former NSW Strata Commissioner John Minns and a wide network of industry and consumer leaders, Kate helped convene a cross-sector discussion to explore what’s broken—and what could be rebuilt. The outcome: a collaborative report outlining six key reform areas designed to make strata more equitable, transparent, and functional. Her work is helping push the conversation forward at a time when strata’s role in housing affordability, sustainability, and urban planning has never been more critical. Hemp-derived THC products, including beverages, have exploded on the market in recent years as producers take advantage of a federal legal loophole that leaves the products legal—or at least not-illegal—in many states. Much of this nascent beverage market is focused on seltzer-style minimalism or sweet, fruit-forward drinks, but Connecticut's Float House (https://floathouse.co) is making the case for beer aroma and flavor as the category develops. In this episode, cofounders Gordon Whelpley and Jared Emerling—alumni of Connecticut and New York breweries that include Two Roads, Sixpoint, Twelve Percent Beer Project, and Stony Creek—discuss their approach to making hop-driven THC beverages that drink like nonalcoholic beers. Along the way, they touch on: launching a THC beverage brand in an uncertain environment the current regulatory framework for producing and selling hemp-derived beverages creatively designing beer-focused beverages in a space with infinite possibility building balanced flavor and mouthfeel in hopp-forward NA brews creating body using novel hop products the difference between nonconverted and converted hemp-derived THC how CBD modulates the body's uptake of THC the benefits of beverage-sipping as a slow ingestion mode for THC And more. If a $595 annual fee premium credit card hits the market, should it automatically earn a place in your wallet? In this episode, I take a detailed look at Citi's newest addition to the transferable points landscape: the Citi Strata Elite Card. From its standard 80,000-point welcome bonus to the elevated 100,000-point offer available through certain channels, we'll walk through exactly what you get when you open this card. You'll hear how its bonus categories actually work, why the time-restricted “Citi Nights” dining perk is so unusual, and what makes its non-category 1.5x earning stand out—or not—compared to other cards. We'll also dig into the real value of the credits, including the split Blacklane credit, the merchant-specific Splurge credit, and the 2-night minimum hotel portal credit—plus where this card shines with American Airlines lounge passes and where it falls flat next to Citi's own mid-tier options and the retired Prestige card. Before you sign up for the welcome bonus, I'll share the points expiration rules that can cost you big if you cancel after a year, and what I think this launch reveals about the next wave of premium rewards cards. In Whitestown, Indiana, just outside Indianapolis, this small-town lager brewery has made big waves with multiple World Beer Cup golds for its märzen, Follow the Lederhosen—not to mention a WBC silver for its pale Skool House Bock, knockout scores (https://beerandbrewing.com/beer-reviews/?q=moontown&hPP=30&idx=dato_cbb_web_review_search&p=0) from Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine® judges, and five GABF medals for various lagers. However, Moontown's (https://www.moontownbeer.com) success is a story of working within the confines of their two-vessel system to find processes that produce the flavors they want. Step-mashing is a must, and their mashout decoction—while not a traditional one, by any means—gives them an extra nudge of flavor and attenuation. In this episode, director of brewing operations Cody Peczkowski talks about the deep influence of his experience brewing for the Gordon Biersch chain, and the how his approach to recipe design has developed in the ensuing years. Along the way, he touches on: focusing on premium ingredients for better beer step-mashing a hazy IPA adjusting the step-mash regimen for body or better attenuation using a mashout decoction process on their two-vessel brewhouse brewing two different märzens with different origin malts, including both German and American craft malts bunging rather than spunding tanks managing competition beers that are “too hoppy” bringing alcohol levels down in malt-forward lager taking a hop-forward approach to West Coast–style pils asking the question, “What would Gordon Biersch do?” And more. Jo Cooper never backs down. Her career to date and the epic court battle she won a few years back prove it.Now she's tackling bystander apathy and pushing for more serious action on ending domestic and family violence. She's been at the forefront of generating community support to introduce a domestic violence disclosure scheme in the state of NSW, and potentially to see it move across other states and territories.A little bit of background: At the last NSW election, then Premier Dominic Perrottet promised a “Right to Ask” scheme — giving people the power to find out if a current or former partner had a history of violence. The Coalition lost, and the promise vanished. Two years on, advocates want the now Minns Labor Government to pick it up.South Australia has already shown a disclosure scheme can work. First trialled in 2018, it was officially introduced in 2022, with 700 applications lodged in 2024 alone. Police say the scheme has saved lives.Jo joins The Women's Agenda podcast to share why NSW needs this law, how she built grassroots momentum, and why tackling bystander apathy is her life's work. Allen and RD have Chat Room, a west coast pilsner by Celestial Beerworks out of Texas. From Untappd:"Chat Room is a fresh, crisp, punchy West Coast Pilsner! Perfect timing for the outdoorsy games we've got going today. This simple Pilsner base was hopped heavily with Citra, Strata and El Dorado Hops. It's kind of the best of both worlds: the clean crispness of a lager and the aromatic, juicy flavors of an IPA.This 5.2% beer is delicate yet complex, has clementine and cantaloupe aroma, and finished with a dry with a pleasant hop bitterness."Thanks for watching!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/strikeout-beer--2992189/support.

Recent research by Strata, Ireland's leading provider of construction time management and digital construction services, reveals that 88% of construction and engineering professionals have accelerated their use of digital technologies over the past year. In addition, nearly 70% of respondents are leveraging these tools to drive smarter decision-making and innovation across the sector. Barriers to digital adoption The 2025 Strata Report: Digital Transformation in Construction highlighted that siloed workflows are the leading barrier to digital adoption in the sector. Time constraints ranked second, driven by limited capacity for training and the pressure of industry-wide labour shortages. In third place, skillset gaps point to an urgent need for targeted training and the strategic hiring of new digital capabilities to support transformation. Knowledge of AI The research found that 81% of construction and engineering professionals report only basic or moderate knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, more than 71% of respondents believe AI will be critical in shaping the future of the sector. Despite this strong belief, over half of companies surveyed had yet to implement formal AI training for their teams. Sustainability in sector When asked about the importance of sustainability in the sector, 85% of construction and engineering professionals said it will become more important over the next one to three years. This contrasted with just 5% reporting significant progress in utilising digital tools such as carbon calculations and whole-life assessments. Commenting on the findings, Enda Grimes, Director and Founder of Strata said: "With the Government's National Planning Framework prioritising accelerated housing delivery, and the Climate Action Plan placing new demands on infrastructure and sustainability targets, meeting construction demand will require greater efficiency and new ways of working. In this context, digitalisation and AI are no longer optional efficiency tools - they are essential levers for delivering on national ambitions." "Our research shows that while digital adoption is gaining momentum across the sector, a significant gap in skills and applied knowledge remains in our industry. Addressing this challenge requires collaboration with digital experts who not only bring strong digital capability, but also understand the practical complexities of engineering and construction. As Ireland's population continues to grow, the need to improve our infrastructure becomes more urgent. By combining deep engineering expertise with digital innovation, we can accelerate delivery and build the resilient infrastructure we need." Over 250 construction and engineering professionals, representing over 170 individual companies in Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe took part in the Strata survey in the second quarter of 2025. In Strata 23: Convergence, chaos collides with destiny. Baby Zaa spirals into a neurotic meltdown, POS pulses with mysterious energy, and Suzy's Dinfants clash with Renyke and Shabra in a warehouse standoff neither side expected. When an ancient emotional mimicry orb is unearthed, secrets stir and danger explodes. A fast-paced, droll slice of post-human noir from The Book of Immersion by Sarnia de la Mare. Listen now and immerse in the glitchy heart of Strata 23.
The truth is that the current Government approach to housing which is based on building 1.2 million new homes over a 5-year period won't be met. As I reported recently the running total is 60,000 homes below what would be required to meet the target. But worse, the strategy is driving the states to permit … Continue reading "The Strata Nightmare Continues…"
Best 10 Sci-Fi Books now on the internet and beyond 2025 and why they are so great “Featuring original lyrics by Tale Teller Club and artwork by iServalan, The Book of Immersion: Volume 1 offers a multisensory reading experience that is as poetic as it is provocative. It is not merely a story—it is a threshold to another state of being.” (books.google.com)If you've ever wished a novel could sing to you, paint for you, and then whisper its last line through a vocoder, Sarnia de la Mare's The Book of Immersion is already living in your head. It's literature spliced with sound art and graphic storytelling—a proof-of-concept for sci-fi as total sensory plunge, and a perfect gateway to ten other speculative masterpieces that also stretch the genre in bold directions.1. The Book of Immersion by Sarnia de la MareAmazon listingDe la Mare's debut folds prose, lyrics, and AI-generated visuals into a layered “Strata” structure that mimics a DJ set. The central character—an autistic-coded artificial intelligence named Renyke—experiences emotion like glitching code, making sensory overload a narrative engine rather than a side note. It's part novel, part concept album, part artbook, and wholly immersive. (books.google.com)2. Dune by Frank HerbertWikipediaPublished in 1965 and still the yard-stick for epic world-building, Dune blends ecology, theology, and real-politik into a desert planet saga so persuasive that planetary scientists now name Titan's dunes after its planets. The spice-fuelled power struggles feel uncannily contemporary, reminding us that resource wars are timeless. (en.wikipedia.org)3. Neuromancer by William GibsonWikipediaGibson's 1984 cyberpunk heist hard-wired “cyberspace” into popular vocabulary and imagined console cowboys decades before VR headsets hit shelves. Its neon-noir mood and jacked-in hackers still shape everything from The Matrix to modern infosec slang. (en.wikipedia.org)4. The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le GuinWikipediaLe Guin's 1969 classic sends an envoy to an ice-world where inhabitants are biologically ambisexual. The result is anthropology via first-contact, a meditation on gender fluidity decades before the term went mainstream, and a lesson in how culture can be the strangest alien of all. (en.wikipedia.org)5. Snow Crash by Neal StephensonWikipediaStephenson's 1992 roller-blade ride predicted the Metaverse, viral memes as literal viruses, and pizza-delivery drone capitalism. It's equal parts linguistic theory and sword-swinging satire, proving that big ideas and break-neck action can share the same page. (en.wikipedia.org)6. Hyperion by Dan SimmonsWikipediaStructured like The Canterbury Tales in space, Hyperion (1989) threads six pilgrim backstories around the terrifying time-bending Shrike. Genre-hopping—from detective noir to military SF—creates a mosaic about faith, storytelling, and the cruelty of time. (en.wikipedia.org)7. The Three-Body Problem by Liu CixinWikipediaHard science meets Cultural-Revolution history in this 2008 Chinese phenomenon. Liu turns orbital mechanics into existential horror, asking what humanity deserves when the cosmos finally takes notice. (en.wikipedia.org)8. The Fifth Season by N. K. JemisinWikipediaJemisin launches the Broken Earth trilogy with tectonic apocalypse, second-person narration, and magic as geologic force. It's a brutal climate-change parable wrapped in a story about oppressed bodies weaponised by empire. (en.wikipedia.org)9. Project Hail Mary by Andy WeirWikipediaWeir trades Mars for Tau Ceti in a 2021 page-turner where lone-scientist ingenuity—and an unexpectedly endearing alien—stand between Earth and stellar extinction. A film adaptation from Lord & Miller starring Ryan Gosling just dropped its first trailer this week, so read before Hollywood spoils the twist. (en.wikipedia.org, indiatimes.com)10. Ancillary Justice by Ann LeckieWikipediaBreq, an AI once spread across thousands of bodies, is now trapped in one and out for vengeance. Leckie's 2013 debut won the Hugo, Nebula, and Clarke in the same year by queering space opera norms—everyone is “she,” and personhood is a matter of degree, not biology. (en.wikipedia.org)Why these ten? Each title here rewires science fiction in its own way—whether through multimedia experimentation (Immersion), ecological epics (Dune), digital frontiers (Neuromancer, Snow Crash), or radical takes on identity (Left Hand, Ancillary Justice). Together they map a genre that's less about rockets and more about possibilities: new politics, new pronouns, new physics, new artforms. Grab any one of them and prepare to exit the airlock of the ordinary.

What adventure besets Renyke and Shabra as they hide from the Cadre? All episodes at https://www.taletellerclub.com
All episodes at www.taletellerclub.com Welcome to Immersion, You have reached Strata 21. Strata 21: Love and Loss.Love is not always a warm hand or a soothing voice. Sometimes love is as sharp as a samurai sword and it severs deep ties once longed for. It can lacerate the flesh of existence so deep it bleeds and spews all that a human has ever known. As a mother cuts the cord, as a friend ends a lie, these ties once meant to bind are decimated. What remains when they are gone is loss in search of gain.Love, in its truest form, does not always choose comfort, it chooses survival. To lose love is to learn its weight. To survive it's loss is to grow something in its place. Its replacement is built from evolution, so deeply magnificent and important to all humans. But love does not need a host, it exists without a vessel, and it is sought.Shabra's hands were stained with blood. The echo of Renyke's cry still clung to the air. He had yelped like an animal as Shabra had pinned him down. Flex had gone, his wounded body dragged into the shadows by Redact's *runners. Renyke lay still. He was breathing and regaining consciousness, opening his eyes to a bright sun and a sense of history repeating itself. Shabra leaned close, brushing hair from his temple."You're okay," she stated matter-of-factly, though she couldn't know for sure.On the back of his neck was a wound, now stitched, cleaned and cauterised.“I had to,” she told him. “She was overriding you. I couldn't let her keep speaking through your mouth. You deserve to hear yourself, not her. *'Sides you need to let go of all that code shit, be a man."He didn't answer. His breathing was shallow but regular. The removal had gone technically well. The damage POS had done to his emotional regulators, less so.“You'll stabilise,” she murmured. “But you may not understand why it hurts. Change hurts. We move on.”POS lay on a rock, immobilised, now without a host and devoid of her power. No flicker remained and this was death, thought Shabra, who was used to death in the *zones. Humans and machines do not last forever after all.“You had your chance,” she had said as she pulled it ceremonially from Renyke's neck. “Now he gets his.”Shabra let Renyke sleep for three hours, watching his silent mind as it readjusted to its new state. He blinked once. Twice. He was alive, a strong and handsome man born of code and now transformed. He sat up too fast, then froze. "It feels so quiet, no buzz, no electricity.” he exclaimed, slightly confused as he recalled the circumstances of how he had got there.“Has POS gone?” Renyke touched his neck and winced.Shabra nodded.“Yes.”“She was part of your architecture Mr Renyke, It'll feel strange. But you'll adapt, we all gotta grow up sometime.”But it was no time to get sentimental. “You're safe for now, they can't trace you, not without POS, but we need to get moving soon. It's time to disappear. I have a feeling they'll want you dead or alive.” At Redact Flex is undergoing a serious grilling for losing POS and not killing Renyke. He stood before the Cadre in silence. He wasn't used to failure and it showed."I didn't see it coming," he expained, "she came out of nowhere and put a gun to my head. That woman is a threat to anyone, ballsy and cold. Then she knocked me out."Eventually, Cadre Dominia spoke. “We understand it was a difficult situation but you were careless. They are no doubt long gone by now.”"We need to examine the experiment "said Cadre Angelique."We believe the POS has been removed and Renyke may be value to us. The experiment may have more revelations without the interference of his POS." Flex nodded in agreement. "I can find them, the zones are my grounds, no one can hide for long," he assured the panel who looked down from their elevated plinths.Cadre Santina spoke. "This woman, Shabra, we have not been able to find her previous path, there seems to be an absence of information. Do we know anything about her?"Flex answered, "she is a maverick, works with no particular tribe, possibly a mercenary of course, I could not be sure. But she is tricky and able, certainly an asset to Renyke at this time if he does not want to be found."Cadre Dominia thought for a moment, "They have a connection, Renyke and Shabra, so perhaps the experiment was successful after all. A machine that can connect, desire, perhaps even love. One that can metamorphose into a human. This is what we wanted to prove. It was the interference of the POS that was the real threat."Cadre Santina, can we know for sure where the POS is now?," she asked"There is a faint signal at the point of the failed transition, " explained Cadre Santina, We believe it was removed form the host and it now static, probably discarded following it's removal and left as a decoy.""Send a rat scout to collect it." said Cadre Dominia, "we can have it destroyed, it remains a threat." The three women exchanged no visible glances. Flex could feel the weight of his failure.Cadre Dominia finally spoke, “You will locate the subjects. The humanoid must be analysed. The experiment has not concluded. I do not need to stress how important it is that Renyke is not to be intercepted by other powerful organisations, or, worse still, a *crim gang. His capture by an undesirable force could have dangerous consequences. Kill him if necessary, if he falls into enemy hands.”Flex drew a slow breath and closed his eyes for a few seconds to compose and re-align. It had been a difficult and highly charged few days with an intensity that had been frightening even by his warrior standards. He had bonded with Renyke, The prospect of killing him was not welcome. He would do what he could to bring him to Redact unharmed.“They'll be moving fast,” he said. “Shabra knows how to hide. And Renyke, he's altered. He won't be who we expect.”“Then find who he has become,” Cadre Santina demanded. "I do not want to send a whole army for one man. Do your job, return the experiment unharmed or destroy him if you have to and we will perform a thorough autopsy.""And what of Shabra?" Asked Flex."Collateral damage, although she could be of use as a soldier," exclaimed Cadre Dominia. "Keep an open mind but do not jeopardise your mission for her survival. On a rock within a sheltered enclave a stray ray of light reflected onto a small square of metal through swaying trees. The metal button glistened as the young *Dinfant boy, Daniel, ran into the enclave to retrieve his ball. Daniel approached carefully, watching the button glisten as he did so. The closer he moved towards the rock the more the button began to pulse. Daniel began to scream."Kairo, Kairo....come quickly!"Several Dinfants ran into the enclave."What is it, Daniel?" Kairo was concerned, it was rare that a Dinfant would be separated from his kin."What on earth is the matter?"" I found her!" screamed Daniel."Who, who have you found?" Asked Kairo.More Dinfants came, drawn by the commotion. Aghast and speechless they looked at the rock as Daniel pointed towards the pulsating button.""I found her, look, I found her, I found Mommy."to be continued...©2025 Sarnia de la Mare
What if the biggest risk in your business isn't building the product but realizing no one wants it? In this Unlearn episode, I'm joined by Alistair Croll, technologist, entrepreneur, and bestselling author of Lean Analytics, for a candid and clever conversation on rethinking product development, marketing, and demand generation.Alistair's work focuses on data-driven innovation and human behavior. He co-authored Just Evil Enough: The Subversive Marketing Handbook, a playbook for bending the rules to win in the attention economy. He has chaired global tech conferences like O'Reilly's Strata and currently leads Startupfest, where he helps founders turn clever ideas into competitive advantage.Known for blending insight with humor, Alistair unpacks why subversive creativity, not perfection, often wins. From the “fluency equation” to Burger King's clever customer acquisition tactics, he reveals how unconventional strategies generate meaningful traction. This episode explores the science of subversive marketing, reframes how we think about product launch risk, and dives into the mindset shifts leaders need to stay relevant in the AI era.Key TakeawaysStart with Attention, Not Execution: The first job is proving demand, not building features. The Fluency Equation: Adoption is driven by desire, but also requires lowering inexperience, complexity, and perceived consequence.Redefine Product-Market Fit: Medium fit — how people find, try, and pay — is just as important as what you offer.Reverse Your GTM Strategy: Work backward from demand instead of forward from the product.Additional InsightsTest Before You Build: Demand validation should come before development or scaling.Have a Disagreement with the World: Bold startups are born from challenging norms, not just meeting expectations.Use Familiar Behaviors to Drive Adoption: Anchoring new tools to existing habits lowers friction and boosts engagement.Practice Ethical Persuasion: Subversive tactics work best when they respect users and build long-term trust.Episode Highlights:00:00 – Episode RecapAlistair reframes startup risk with a clever hand-raising test: building isn't the danger, indifference is.03:16 – The Beach-Read Business BookWhy Just Evil Enough was built to entertain and educate, and how surprise fuels learning.07:30 – The Real Startup RiskMost teams focus on building because it feels safe. But the real risk is customer indifference.08:41 – Subversive Marketing in ActionThe Whopper Detour: How Burger King used playful tactics to achieve strategic goals.13:20 – The Fluency Equation ExplainedA new way to understand user hesitation and remove behavioral friction.19:14 – AI, Fluency, and Leadership GapsWhy executives aren't using AI, even when they know they should.26:00 – Decision-Making Matrix for InnovationA two-by-two framework to help teams run smarter experiments with lower risk.31:01 – The Fourth MiscapitalizationWhy companies are still over-investing in engineering in an AI-native...

As most beer enthusiasts know, hops play a vital role in the brewing process. The cone-shaped flowers impart distinct aromas that help distinguish, say, a pilsner from a pale ale. Oregon is one of only three states, along with Washington and Idaho, that commercially grows hops. Oregon and Washington are also the only two states that have their own USDA-supported breeding programs to develop new varieties of hops. But only Oregon can lay claim to the Strata hop, a variety that was bred at Oregon State University and released in 2018. Nearly all Strata hops today are being grown at just nine family farms in the Willamette Valley. But this quintessentially Oregon hop is about to get a lot more exposure thanks to Oregon Homegrown, a statewide beer collaboration launching on May 23. For two weeks, more than 20 Oregon breweries will showcase the flavor versatility of Strata to create an array of beers, from a Vienna lager to a hazy IPA to a fruited ale. Jeff Alworth is a journalist, author of several books on beer and the executive director of Celebrate Oregon Beer, a nonprofit he created last year that’s organizing the event. Gayle Goschie is a third-generation hop farmer and the co-owner of Goschie Farms in Silverton. They join us to share more details about Oregon Homegrown and what makes Strata hops so special.
Parrotdog (https://parrotdog.co.nz) has been a craft-brewing mainstay in New Zealand for nearly 15 years, and with national distribution and a production brewery and taproom steps from the beach and Wellington's airport, they reach a broad audience of consumers across a range of styles. While their core line features everything from a classic C-malt IPA to pils with “vivid passion fruit and white-wine notes,” they also constantly iterate and experiment on the brewery's five-barrel pilot with everything from fresh-hop lagers to saturated hazy IPAs. This week, cofounder and brewing director Matt Warner joins the podcast to talk hops (of course) and how they employ both domestic and Pacific Northwest varieties across a range of styles. Along the way, he discusses: growing from a contract brand to a small brewery to a regional production brewery scaling from homebrew recipes to commercial batches in the early days designing “zingy” New Zealand pils that snaps across and cleans the palate rebalancing blends of Riwaka and Nelson Sauvin yearly to adapt to crop-year differences how Motueka changes over the picking window with a bit of “ginger crunch” character instability in Motueka after pelletizing using hops to build bigger mouthfeel in otherwise dry beer new Bract Program experimental hops that show promise And more.
