What if a buddy didn't just mean someone you can chat with about things you like or stuff you have in common with like your taste in music or hobbies? What if your buddy also made you feel less isolated and, in your dark moments, helped save your life? On April 8th, 2013, after discovering three girls on Twitter contemplating suicide, then 15-year old Gabby Frost decided to create Buddy Project. In the same way she felt supported by online communities she joined, Gabby thought she could pair people up as buddies. With this peer support system, her goal was to to help prevent suicide and raise awareness for mental health. Episode sponsored by Riley's Way Foundation. Gabby Frost is a rising junior at Drexel University and founder of the nonprofit Buddy Project. Buddy project works to pair you with a person dealing with a similar situation you may be dealing with in an attempt to continue the conversation and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Gabby is a spokesperson for American Eagle and their AExMe council.
When Gabby Frost was a teenager, she noticed that many of her friends, both online and in real life, were dealing with serious issues like self-harm and suicidal thoughts. She offered them her support in the best way she could, but she wished there was an easier way for young people to get connected with each other and talk about their interests, and also their struggles. Rather than wait around for this to someday exist, Gabby decided to create it herself… and Buddy Project was born.
