In this episode of The New CISO, host Steve Moore speaks with Manuel "Manu" Ressel, CISO at SAUTER Group, about his unconventional journey from classroom teacher to cybersecurity leader—and why the "Four Cs" of modern education provide a powerful framework for building effective security programs. Drawing from years as both a teacher and school principal in Germany, Manu introduces Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity as essential leadership skills that fundamentally challenge how the industry approaches awareness training and incident response. After growing frustrated with Germany's outdated education system that prioritized memorization over critical thinking, Manu left his position as principal and reinvented himself as a digital transformation consultant. Working with schools and mid-sized companies to adopt cloud technologies, he eventually landed the CISO role at SAUTER, an international building automation company with 4,000 employees across multiple countries. The conversation tackles security's most persistent failure: awareness training that doesn't work. Manu reveals that 37% of security incidents in Germany could be prevented if users made better decisions, yet most organizations rely on boring click-through programs. He advocates for scenario-based, role-specific training—an approach now mandated by Europe's NIS 2 regulation—that treats people as the biggest opportunity in cybersecurity rather than the weakest link. One of the episode's most practical frameworks is Manu's Observation-Description-Interpretation method for analyzing security incidents. He explains how humans naturally jump from observation directly to interpretation, skipping the crucial middle step of accurately describing what actually happened. This leads to finger-pointing, misdiagnosis, and hasty decisions. By training security analysts to pause and describe incidents factually first, teams make better decisions and build trust with the business.Manu challenges the punitive approach many organizations take toward security failures, particularly companies that fire employees for repeatedly clicking phishing simulations. He champions building positive fault cultures where employees feel safe reporting mistakes. His three crisis questions—Is anyone dying? Major financial impact? Will someone be hurt?—provide a simple framework for staying calm and deciding when immediate action is necessary versus taking time to think strategically.Key Topics Discussed:Why the "Four Cs" (Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity) define effective security leadershipThe Observation-Description-Interpretation framework for incident analysis without biasTransforming ineffective awareness training into engaging, scenario-based programsBuilding positive security cultures where employees report issues without fearNIS 2's mandate for role-specific cybersecurity training across organizational levelsWhy Germany and European mid-market companies lag in cloud adoptionThree critical crisis questions: Is anyone dying? Financial impact? Risk of harm? Why punitive phishing training destroys trust and cultural engagementApplying teacher skills to security leadership and de-escalation...
In the Regency Era, reputation was all many working-class women had. When Edinburgh schoolteachers Marianne Woods and Jane Pirie were accused of sapphic behaviour by their student Jane Cumming, they lost everything. So they decided to sue their accuser's wealthy grandmother for libel. The legal case, Pirie and Woods vs Cumming Gordon, only fanned the flames of the scandal. THE TYRANT WHO BECAME A SCHOOLTEACHER Colleague Professor James Romm. Professor James Romm discusses the surprising fate of Dionysius II, the tyrant of Syracuse. After the Corinthian leader Timoleonarrived to liberate the city, Dionysius surrendered and was allowed to retire to Corinth rather than facing execution. There, the former absolute ruler became a music teacher, leading to the proverb "Dionysius is in Corinth," a saying used for centuries to describe the unpredictability of fortune and the fall of the powerful. On August 28, 1989, 24-year-old Jana Carol Simpson walked into her portable classroom at Glen Park Elementary School in southeast Fort Worth for her very first day of teaching in the district. Not long after, she was found dying on the steps of that classroom, stabbed seventeen times in broad daylight. Her purse and jewelry were untouched. There was no sign of sexual assault. And yet the young teacher, remembered for her warmth, hugs, and devotion to her students, had been brutally murdered on what should have been among the happiest days of her career. This episode retraces Jana's life, her path into teaching, and the events of that August afternoon. We follow the investigation that led police to a troubled 12-year-old former Glen Park student, the controversial interrogation that produced — and then lost — a confession, and the trial that ended in acquittal after only forty minutes of jury deliberation.Along the way, we examine the community's fear, the changes in school security that followed, the painful aftermath for Jana's family, and the unresolved questions that linger thirty-six years later. The murder of Jana Carol Simpson remains officially unsolved. If you have information about this case, please contact the Fort Worth Police Cold Case Unit at (817) 392-4307.Sources: The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Longview News-Journal, The Marshall News Messenger, The Austin American-Statesman, The Orlando Sentinel, edweek.comYou can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at https://patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X.Search @gonecoldpodcast at all or just click https://linknbio.com/gonecoldpodcast#JusticeForJanaSimpson #FortWorth #TX #Texas #TrueCrime #TexasTrueCrime #ColdCase #TrueCrimePodcast #Podcast #ColdCase #Unsolved #Murder #UnsolvedMurder #UnsolvedMysteries #Homicide #CrimeStories #PodcastRecommendations #CrimeJunkie #MysteryPodcast #TrueCrimeObsessed #CrimeDocs #InvestigationDiscovery #PodcastAddict #TrueCrimeFan #CriminalJustice #ForensicFilesBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/gone-cold-texas-true-crime--3203003/support.

11/5/25 - Teresa Helena Higginson (1844‑1905), born in Holywell, Wales, spent her life as a humble schoolteacher while living a remarkable hidden sanctity. From her childhood in a devout Catholic family to her work in schools across Wigan, Bootle, and Edinburgh, she quietly bore suffering, illness, and the challenges of teaching with unwavering faith. On Good Friday 1874, she received the first of her mystical stigmata (bleeding wounds in her hands and feet), and experienced repeated ecstasies in which she shared in the Passion of Christ. Teresa also promoted a deep devotion to the "Sacred Head of Jesus, Seat of Divine Wisdom." Declared "Servant of God" in 1937, her life shows the extraordinary ways holiness can exist in ordinary daily work, patient suffering, and total union with Christ.

How to bring peace to Gaza and Ukraine? Maybe the United Nations can help. Or, sadly, maybe not. But there really was a time, in the second half of the 20th century, when the United Nations could help bring peace to supposedly insoluble wars. The U.N.'s glory days were in the Sixties when it was run by a former Burmese school teacher called U Thant. His incredible story is told by his grandson, the Cambridge University historian Thant Myint-U, in a new book appropriately called Peacemaker. Thant Myint-U reminds us of a halcyon time when the UN Secretary-General could summon presidents at will, mediate between nuclear superpowers, and command respect from Castro to Kennedy. Today's forgotten history reveals how U Thant's intervention during the Cuban Missile Crisis helped prevent nuclear war—a role not-so-surprisingly airbrushed from most American and Soviet accounts. Yes, even in the glory years of the Sixties, the bureaucratized U.N. was far from perfect. But under a dedicated peacemaker like U-Thant it could help bring ceasefires to seemingly endless wars. Like in Ukraine and Gaza. 1. U Thant's crucial role in preventing nuclear war has been erased from history During the Cuban Missile Crisis, U Thant provided the face-saving framework that allowed both Khrushchev and Kennedy to step back from the brink. He articulated the missiles-for-no-invasion deal, gave Khrushchev a neutral party to respond to instead of American ultimatums, and bought Kennedy time against his hawkish advisors. Yet this intervention barely appears in American or Soviet accounts.2. The UN's decline stems from lost enthusiasm on both sides The UN's marginalization wasn't inevitable. It resulted from America's disillusionment after Vietnam-era challenges to its power, combined with a new generation of Third World leaders less interested in the global stage than their predecessors like Nehru, Nasser, and Nkrumah. Both superpowers and smaller nations stopped investing in the institution.3. Decolonization needed the UN's framework to succeed Without the UN providing a structure where newly independent nations had equal status and a voice, decolonization might have resulted in continued informal empire or Commonwealth arrangements. The UN gave these countries both legitimacy and a platform to resist neo-colonial pressures.4. The next Secretary-General selection could determine the UN's survival With the current term ending in 2025, the choice of the next leader—requiring agreement between Trump, Putin, and Xi Jinping—may be the UN's last chance for relevance. Without strong leadership focused on the UN's core peacemaking function, the institution may not survive.5. The UN worked best when it rejected Cold War binary thinking The non-aligned movement wasn't passive neutrality but active rejection of a world divided into camps. Leaders like U Thant succeeded by creating space for all parties to negotiate without choosing sides, offering an alternative to the superpower confrontation that risked nuclear war.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Bio By Richard ChuterI'm Richard. 57 years old. 2 children, one son who is 22 and a daughter who is 14. Married to Natalie. Live in Norfolk, UK. Never really bothered about the fact that mid-life with gain was happening. Took it as part of life, and the expanding belly was just something to live with. Lockdown brought a realisation that I was overweight and unfit. Health problems had started with knee pain and fluid building up around the knee. The doctor didn't suggest that it was a weight issue causing this, but lockdown walks with my family were painful and quite humiliating. My son commented about my weight jokingly, but that was part of the drive for change. Could not shift the weight with exercise and had not considered diet, as I didn't think they worked from what I knew. Xmas 2020/21 was when I found Graeme Curries book The Fasting Highway and podcast. I'm not sure what internet search brought me to you, but the front cover was exactly what I needed to see. Dramatic change was possible.Read The Fasting Highway daily and stick religiously to your suggested 16:8 routine with black coffee. It was probably 17:7 for the most part, but the change was dramatic.People noticed, and work colleagues who were struggling with weight joined in. Some are still fasting. 2025... I've been playing county sports events for over 50 years in racketball. I'm an indoor cycling fanatic, and it's great for my knees. I'm maintaining at 176 lbs. I have never felt so good about my health and weight.I do suggest fasting to people if they ask about how I lost weight and how I live now, but I wish more people knew that you don't have to live an unhappy life with obesity related health issues. Our Patreon Supporters Community - An Invitation to Join Us!Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community.
