The school rugby community has been left embarrassed after a massive brawl broke out at a match over the weekend. During Saturday's Noordvaal Cup match between Die Hoërskool Menlopark and Hoërskool Dr E.G. Jansen, a brawl involving players, parents and spectators erupted. The altercation occurred during the first-team clash between the two schools. Breakfast with Martin Bester sports presenter Xola Ntshinga reported that the match was abandoned a few minutes into the second half, with the score at 36–5 in favour of the hosts, Menlopark. Numerous videos of the fight were shared on social media and quickly went viral. Breakfast with Martin Bester spoke to Rigardt Dey, an Afrikaans teacher at Die Hoërskool Menlopark, about the incident. Dey condemned what took place, clearly stating that such behaviour was completely unacceptable.

A science teacher at St Patrick's College in Wellington says he is moving to make sure all assessments are done in the classroom under supervision, to combat AI. The strategy comes as the Education Review Office today released a report saying AI is becoming part of everyday life and schools want more formal guidance from the Education Ministry. 

Universities are feeling hard-done-by, after government funding for in-school teacher training heavily favoured a new-comer headed at the time by the chair of the Teaching Council. The Teachers' Institute was allowed to triple its intake of school-based teacher trainees this year, while universities' attempts to grow were knocked back in what they say was a shambolic and messy process. Education correspondent John Gerritsen reports.

The Origins of Two Cosmological Giants George Gamow was born in Odessa in 1904 to a schoolteacher father who had once taught Leon Trotsky, leading to a notable incident where Trotsky attempted to organize a student coup in the classroom by having every student sign a single letter of a protest petition to hide individual identities. Gamow'seducation eventually took him to the University of St. Petersburg, where his father famously sold the family silver to fund his studies under the mentorship of Alexander Friedmann, a meteorologist and balloonist who pioneered mathematical models of an expanding universe based on Einstein's general relativity. When Friedmann died at a young age after contracting typhoid following a high-altitude balloon flight, Gamow was forced to pivot from cosmology to quantum and nuclear physics, where he successfully modeled alpha particle decay and the process of quantum tunneling that allows particles of opposite charges to overcome energy barriers. This discovery laid the groundwork for understanding the fusion processes that fuel stars and led to the development of early particle accelerators. During his time at Niels Bohr's Institute in Copenhagen, Gamow became a legendary figure known for riding his motorcycle across Europe and using humorous cartoons to communicate with international colleagues when language barriers arose. His life took a dramatic turn when the Soviet regime began demanding that scientific research align with Marxist-Leninist philosophy, prompting Gamow to attempt a daring but unsuccessful escape in a rubber kayak across the Black Sea toward Turkey. He and his wife were eventually able to defect to the West in 1933 after Bohr arranged for him to represent the Soviet Union at the Solvay conference, allowing Gamow to ultimately settle at George Washington University and begin his influential work on the "Big Bang" theory. On August 28, 1989, 24-year-old Jana Carol Simpson walked into her portable classroom at Glen Park Elementary School in southeast Fort Worth for her very first day of teaching in the district. Not long after, she was found dying on the steps of that classroom, stabbed seventeen times in broad daylight.Her purse and jewelry were untouched. There was no sign of sexual assault. And yet the young teacher, remembered for her warmth, hugs, and devotion to her students, had been brutally murdered on what should have been among the happiest days of her career.This episode retraces Jana's life, her path into teaching, and the events of that August afternoon. On Good Friday 1874, she received the first of her mystical stigmata (bleeding wounds in her hands and feet), and experienced repeated ecstasies in which she shared in the Passion of Christ. Teresa also promoted a deep devotion to the "Sacred Head of Jesus, Seat of Divine Wisdom." Declared "Servant of God" in 1937, her life shows the extraordinary ways holiness can exist in ordinary daily work, patient suffering, and total union with Christ.
