Welcome back to Season 3, Episode 205 of the Asian Hustle Network Podcast! We are very excited to have Allison Hueman on this week's show with our host, Misa Chien. Allison Hueman is a multidisciplinary artist based in Oakland, CA. Recently celebrated for her ground-breaking NBA jersey design for the Golden State Warriors, Hueman's work comes to life in multiple mediums. Whether she is creating delicate visions on canvas, augmenting reality through video projections and other digital media, or crushing massive walls with a spray can, she often draws on the human condition to create colorful mash-ups of the abstract and figurative. In January 2022, Hueman premiered her award-winning immersive art experience, Homebody, a 20,000-square-foot experience brought to life by projection mapping and augmented reality. Hueman's distinctly gauzy art style is what she likes to call “etherealism,” a blend of ethereal realism. Her pieces explore themes of time, memory, trauma, and healing, and her layered work can be seen on streets and in galleries worldwide. She balances her time between exhibitions and creating public works while also collaborating with some of the world's top brands that include the Wynn Las Vegas, Adobe, Nike, Google, L'Oreal, Sony Music, and many more. Her work has found homes in the collections of Ava Duvernay, Usher, P!nk, and Swizz Beats. It's hard not to find a bit of pop-cultural appropriation in the roots of street art. There has always been artists who take from Disney, Hollywood, politics, and remix it into stencil art, wheat-pastes and murals. But there has been a trend over the last decade, as Big Muralism has become the trend, where we have begun to toe the line toward cultural appropriation in ways that have become insensitive and uneducated. Predominantly, we see this in depictions of Asian woman and culture, where Geishas pop-up in far away cities without context and often over-sexualized by a male artist. In this short report from Radio Juxtapoz, Doug Gillen speaks with artists Hueman and Sheena Liam about this conversation about depictions of Asian culture in street art, their own experiences and how nuanced conversations are not being had or understood for a better and broader dialogue. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 072 was recorded via Skype in London, Penang and Oakland in early May, 2021. Brett Hagler is the co-founder and CEO of New Story, a nonprofit organization that pioneers solutions to end global homelessness. They work with nonprofits and governments in the developing world to build homes better, cheaper and faster. According to a 2019 survey by the Pew Research Center, 64 percent of Americans look up to people who have served in the military, regardless of political support for conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, as the new generation of members of the military is much smaller than it used to be, many Americans don’t know a veteran anymore. But, as you may know, serving your country comes in many forms — just like doctors, teachers, first responders, mothers and community leaders who have put the lives of others before their own. Mike Burns is a former Army officer with 13 years of service and is the founder and CEO of Service First, a jewelry brand that celebrates service. Mike is also the host of the podcast “Redefining the Influencer,” one of the shows from Hueman Group Media. When people have a troubled past, they often have a hard time shaking off negative stereotypes. For this reason, those coming out of prison, homelessness and foster care have some of the highest unemployment rates in our society. Before the pandemic, these ranged from 27 to 42 percent. And COVID-19 has only worsened these numbers, as we hit the highest unemployment rate since the great depression. Our guest this week is Aviva Paley, co-founder and Senior Director of Kitchens for Good. Aviva not only helps lift people out of poverty by getting them employed, but through Kitchens For Good, she’s simultaneously alleviating hunger and food waste in San Diego, California. According to the nonprofit organization Uganda 4 Her, around half of the girls in Uganda between the ages of 15 to 24 are illiterate. Meanwhile, 10% to 25% is how much a girl’s income will increase with every extra year of education. It’s also reported that an educated woman in Uganda will invest 90% of her income into her family. It’s truly admirable when someone sees a huge problem, and takes steps to come up with a solution, even if they have to go on a long winding road to get there. That is the amazing story of our guest, friend, and partner, Liz Bohannon. It’s hard to get away from bad news these days — death, millions of people who lost their jobs and just fear of what will happen in the coming weeks, months, and even the rest of the year. And while it may be difficult to find it, there is a silver lining: more people are helping their neighbors out and demonstrating acts of kindness. In this episode, we’ll be hearing the story of Darleen Santore, the US ambassador of Global Pay It Forward Day. Darlene, better known as “Coach Dar”, helps athletes, CEOs and entrepreneurs break through barriers as a motivational speaker and therapist. Through her professional career, she found another calling — a leader and catalyst for kindness. Around 6 years ago, she was tapped to lead Pay It Forward Day in the US, a full day celebrating kindness and takes place every year on April 28th. While it isn’t attached to a specific organization or foundation, the movement is now celebrated in 86 countries. This week, Darleen will be sharing how Pay It Forward Day came about, how we can get involved and in what ways we can integrate more kindness in our daily lives. Doctors, nurses, healthcare workers and hospital staff have emerged as soldiers and heroes in our war against COVID-19. For those of us sheltering in place, we might feel a little lost or even powerless in this situation. But for people like Ben Goldberg, a native New Yorker, supporting frontliners the best way he knows how was a no-brainer. Ben is the founder and president of the New York Food Trucks Association (NYFTA), and in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the NYFTA and its members urgently rolled out "Frontline Food Trucks", a program that provides thousands of healthcare workers free servings of coffee and other nutritional snacks and meals every day via their food trucks. NYFTA partnered with brands like Sweetgreen, Chobani and La Colombe whose donated products help feed tens of thousands of frontline medical staff who are not only risking their lives, but who have also been deprived of food options due to hospital cafeterias and surrounding food establishments shutting down. In this episode, you'll also hear from Julia Perez, Digital Marketing Director at CORE Foods. CORE Foods makes organic, fresh, healthy on-the-go snacks and as a B Corporation, it's also committed to reinvesting profits back into their food, community, and movement. To support the Frontline Food Trucks program, the company donated over 10,000 of their Organic Overnight Oat Bars + Probiotics. -- To learn more and get involved with #FrontlineFoodTrucks, visit www.gofundme.com/f/frontline-food-trucks-nyc To learn more about CORE Foods, visit www.corefoods.com -- Advertise with us: sincerelyhueman.com/advertise Pitch your story: sincerelyhueman.com/contact Follow Sincerely, Hueman on Instagram @sincerelyhueman This show is produced by Hueman Group Media. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sincerelyhueman/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sincerelyhueman/support
The world has changed because of COVID-19. This pandemic has turned all of our lives upside down. Around the world, people are grieving the loss of their loved ones. Businesses shuttered and millions have lost their jobs. But in this madness and time of uncertainty, there are pockets of hope. On Sincerely, Hueman, our mission to share stories of kindness in action, proves to be more important than ever. For today’s brand new episode, we’re featuring CORE (formerly known as J/P Haitian Relief Organization), a nonprofit organization founded by actor Sean Penn. We recorded this episode with their CEO Ann Lee back in February, before the quarantine was announced. On January 12, 2010, a catastrophic earthquake hit Haiti. In a matter of 35 seconds, 250,000 lives were lost. For over a decade, CORE has been rebuilding communities destroyed by the earthquake. It has developed a holistic approach that is not only reactive, but also proactive. The organization runs life-saving programs around youth development and education, women’s entrepreneurship, reforestation and climate resilience, and community health, to name a few. CORE's programs have since expanded to Puerto Rico, across the Caribbean, and to the US gulf states. In this episode, you’ll hear about CORE’s profound impact in vulnerable communities. We’re sharing Ann’s incredible journey in the development sector, how she crossed paths with Sean in Haiti, and how she deals with injustice and channels her anger into acts of humanity. Special COVID-19 announcement: CORE is working to provide vulnerable communities with access to household items, hygiene kits, and food, during these times where access is critical and resources are limited. Additionally, CORE is working closely with the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Fire Department to provide free drive-through testing for high-risk individuals. To celebrate International Women’s Day and International Women’s Month, you’ll be hearing a story of hope, paying it forward and the power of education to transform lives. In this episode, we're sharing the story of Tiffany Drake, Executive Director of Girls Opportunity Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation. Tiffany left the private sector and found herself breaking the mold as a fellow at USAID — and eventually helping shape Let Girls Learn, a U.S. government initiative launched by former President Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Their work to help adolescent girls attain a quality education and enable them to reach their full potential, transcended the White House and is now changing lives through Girls Opportunity Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation. In the episode, Tiffany talks about the stories of women paying it forward — even when they had nothing — as true acts of kindness in action. Nicki Dingraudo had the most amazing teacher in first grade. She could tell every detail of her classroom, and she’s the reason Nicki fell in love with education. She knew teachers played a role in teaching students how to be kind and how to be human. After moving to Arizona from the suburbs of Chicago, she was able to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. But it wasn’t what she had imagined. Nicki had a really rough time and she would find herself crying on the way to work. In finding other teachers online, Nicki felt a sense of belonging and deep connection. She knew other teachers shared the same experiences and could empathize with her, especially on days when she felt like she wasn’t doing her best as a teacher. After a couple years in the classroom, she began to look for some extra inspiration and started her little corner of the teacher Instagram world, which she called “The Sprinkle Topped Teacher”. Through her posts and resources she provides on her site, Nicki created a support system for teachers who are on the frontlines of shaping the lives of future generations. In this episode, Nicki talks about why she built a strong community of teachers, how we can teach our kids kindness in the classroom, and ways we can practice gratitude in our own lives. When Jaclyn Lindsey and Melissa Burmester were at a crossroads in their career, they didn't know they would both meet at the intersection of kindness. After working as colleagues at charity:water, they both pursued to build a kinder world. Jaclyn personally experienced bullying, and it left a deep scar and painful memory. Now a mother, she longs to help shape a world where her child would be safe and treated with kindness. In this pursuit, both Jaclyn and Melissa couldn’t find solutions that were based on research and academia. Filling this gap turned into their nonprofit, Kindness.org. The organization collaborates with academics, researchers, and volunteers to investigate the "causes and consequences of kindness". Their programs include "Learn Kind", where they bring kindness and social-emotional education to classroom and "Kindlab" which uses an "interdisciplinary mix of research in genetics, neuroscience, psychology, economics, and anthropology" to share learnings around the impact of kindness, to name a few. It wasn't until college when her passion to connect people to causes took shape — upon walking into a run down classroom with no computers and no books for a school assignment. Today, Stacy works on her mission at scale as Director of Corporate Citizenship at GoDaddy for Good, the charitable arm of technology company GoDaddy. This story is about kindness through the lens of someone hurting and the person helping them find hope in spite of it. In February 2006, Jamie’s life took a 180 when he met Renee Yohe, a young woman who was struggling with addiction, depression, self-injury, and suicidal thoughts. Jamie and Renee spent time together before Renee entered a treatment center. Jamie wrote about his encounter with Renee and, while not having any experience as a writer or blogger, composed a riveting blog post titled “To Write Love on Her Arms.” In 2007, the heartwrenching and compelling story of Renee and Jamie's 5-day encounter turned into a movement and officially became a nonprofit organization. For nearly 14 years, Jamie and his team have responded to over 210,000 messages from all around the world. They’ve also created a FIND HELP Tool on their website. The tool helps people locate free or reduced cost counseling and other mental health resources in their community. The organization’s impact on those who’ve been struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide has been profound. In 2015, Jamie published his book "If You Feel Too Much: Thoughts on Things Found and Lost and Hoped For" and today continues to work at the helm of To Write Love on Her Arms. On the podcast, we often talk about kindness on a certain scale. We’ve featured leaders of nonprofit organizations that impact millions of people, as well celebrities who’ve used their platforms for good. In this episode, we want to dive deep into self-kindness and how we can try to pursue it. When AmyAnn was in graduate school, she developed a deep concern for her choices after seeing the documentary “The True Cost” — choices that ultimately impact other people, and the planet. This led her to starting her own company: The Good Trade. Founded in Los Angeles in late 2014, The Good Trade is a leading resource and community for sustainability, slow living, and self-love. Through their content, The Good Trade aims to inspire readers who seek to better care for themselves, their communities, and the planet. Also, understanding that there's spiritual essence or the ability of each plant. They all have the ability to work with us. The results could be good or harmful to your health depending on how you will use it, knowing your intention to work with it and not to abuse it. Moreover, it's important to give yourself space, let yourself work with plants and the things around you, and surrender and decline expectations. It gets you thinking outside of the box, and acting outside your capacities. It is called the healing of the planet.
