This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comIt's our year-end wrap-up, and a flirtatious/contentious one! Nancy and Sarah spar over “Glass Onion,” the latest “Knives Out” mystery, before running down the most memorable moments of the past year (and 49 episodes!), from Will Smith's slap to Teal Swan's manipulation. We chat celebrity, cults, and spiritual voids. (Kwanzaa turns out to have a pretty bleak history, but Joyous Kwanzaa to you, anyway.) Why is Nancy so drawn to narcissistic liars? Why is Sarah so willing to defend terrible people? The tension grows thick. Will our hosts ever stop quibbling and admit they're in love? (That's for the paid subscribers, people.)Bonus content: Who are our picks for person of the year? Villain of the year? We share our favorite movies, TV shows, and books, and make our bid for the most important news story of 2022. Then we confess all our secrets. Or at least, like, two.

All last week and all this week we're in the throes of the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival 2020! The 15th festival has been a showcase of some amazing talent with both new acts and returning acts. One of the returning acts is Girl Brain from Edmonton. This awesome troupe composed of Alyson Dicey, Ellie Heath and Caley Suliak wowed audiences from the mainstage of Comedy Bar on Friday and Saturday night. I reached out to them and asked if there was any album they'd like to chat about while in town. They suggested Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk With Me, an album I was very familiar with having first heard it as part of an episode of This American Life. Go give the album a listen and if you're a real keener like me check out the This American Life episode as well as the movie adaptation and the special. Feel the full Sleepwalk With Me Experience!
In this episode, we talk about our horror stories with boys! We hope you're in for 45 minutes of relatable moments and good laughs! Follow us on Instagram @hypequeenspodcast --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hype-queens/support

This week, Josh talks to Ellie Heath (@ellieheath) about Sweater Zeppelins and Girl Brain (@girlbrainyeg) and… well, we get pretty deep about the potential to alienate an audience. In Edmonton, Girl Brain will be appearing at the Grindstone Comedy Festival on May 9 as part of Sketchnado and then May 12 as an opener for Stand Up Comedian, Mike Delamont. Then, they’ll host their monthly show on May 17 and 18 at the Grindstone Theater with a Mother's Day theme! Then, they’ll come to Philly Sketchfest on Sunday, June 2 at Underground Arts.
The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival is underway and Jason had the pleasure of sitting down with artists during a brunch gathering of sketch comedians. We talk with Carson Pinch about his show Carson Fears Fear Itself, Cam Wyllie about Cam Wyllie & Jon Plester Presents Fruit Cart Bonanza (and another show that we distinctly did not talk about because that's secret and we don't talk about secrets here) as well as the troupe Girl Brain consisting of Caley Suliak, Alyson Dicey and Ellie Heath. Much yummy food, zesty coffee and good conversation was consumed.
This week, Josh talks to Caley Suliak (@girlbrainyeg on Instagram) about Gilda Radner, the theater, and he mispronounces an old Greek name and feel really weird and self-conscious about it. Like Girl Brain on Facebook at facebook.com/girlbrain. They have shows in Edmonton before they head to Toronto Sketchfest on March 8 and 9. Go to girlbrainyeg.com to learn more. Then head to phillysketchfest.com for everything you need to know about this year’s Philly Sketchfest.
