A sermon preached on Article 2 of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 at First Baptist Church-Edna.

Can a people do all the right things and yet face the wrath of God- Absolutely, if their heart does not match their actions. Can someone brought to the lowest of the lows be rescued by God- Absolutely, since He has the power of life and death in His hands and in His plans. Are physical deliverances enough to be saved- No, it takes a change of heart which must be done by the Holy Spirit.

"A common misconception about the grace of God is that law and grace are equal. People try to balance the grace of God with the law. The law cannot save us - it merely diagnoses our spiritual condition. It points us to Jesus - the giver of life. Galatians 3:19-22 explains it this way: "Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one. Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe." * Please help me understand the difference between Christ "helping" me live the Christian life ... and "letting Christ do it all" through me. * I would love to hear your thoughts on Hebrews 12:5-11 where it addresses the chastening of the Lord toward his children. * How do you know when its time to move on from your current church home and find another? * Just wondering if we will literally see God the Father and God the Holy Spirit when we are resurrected and what form will they take?

Success can not just come to you without creating something for yourself to be successful at first. Matthew 5:8 NIV 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Jeremiah 17:9 NIV 9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? They followed the letter of the law, but missed the essence of the law. Religious people get nervous when you start to challenge the way they live life. Matthew 5:17 NIV 17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Fulfill- Bring the law to its intended goal. Galatians 3:21-25 NIV 21 Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. 22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. 23 Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian. Matthew 5:18 NIV 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. With the coming of Christ and what He did for us, many aspects of the law are brought to completion. Hebrews 10:1-4 NIV 1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Hebrews 10:11-14 NIV 11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. Matthew 22:36-40 NIV 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 5:19 NIV 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 23:23-24 NIV 23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. Matthew 5:20 NIV 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Those in the Kingdom of God require a greater righteousness. Romans 8:1-4 NIV 1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. BL: The Kingdom requires a greater righteousness and the King provides it. The essence of God’s law has always been to love him supremely and love people unconditionally.

This can be hard to hear. Shakes your ideology, theology, and identity. Why Jesus asked often, “Can you hear?” Hard to hear a God when we’re so sure we’re right in defending the ideologies and theologies we’ve been taught since birth. All that came from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. We have a belief system of right and wrong, good and bad. Religion is just a byproduct of mans belief system. If you went to get rid of religion you’ve got to get rid of man. Man fights over morality of who’s right and who’s wrong. Who’s belief system is superior? The Bible is a representation of the old covenant age. From the trees in the garden to Moses, up to the cross is all the old covenant. Talking to the Jewish people at that time. Jews kept thinking we can do it all through laws. Jesus came and kept dumping more laws on them (making up new ones). Every time the Jewish Pharisees kept saying they could do it, Jesus kept making up new laws. A law is a law. If it’s in the you ought to do this and ought not do this, that’s a law. He kept giving new laws until the essence was, you’re going to have to be perfect. Think you can do that? You can’t! The New Testament church didn’t get it. They still talk about unrighteousness, behavior, sin, the enemy (satan or the devil) and hell. And don’t ever introduce the finished works of Jesus or The New Covenant. This New Covenant and the finished works of Jesus Christ is the greatest gift that relieves you of judgement, unrighteousness, heavy burden, anxiety, depression, fear, doubt, and more. Yet most who know the Bible inside and out and who’ve been in the church for their entire lives, even the preachers on the pulpit, don’t know about or speak about or receive this gift from God. We’re talking about coming to know God not coming to know a program, not seeking to become a better Christian, person or whatever that program is called. Most religions or programs people are in brings more guilt, not peace and rest, that comes in trusting the God and His New Covenant with all. There are none excluded. Takes you from going through life trying to make it happen, to trusting in God who created all of this finished work before man (you and I) showed up. Thank you God for taking care of this. From my perspective it may look off, or not good at times, yet I trust in You for it all. Hebrews 8:10-12 (NIV) 10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” What could you do that would be unforgivable by God? Our message today looks at a few of the preponderance of scientific facts that support the worldview of design and theistic creation. Does science in any way disprove the existence of God? Absolutely not! In fact, science points the objective seeker to God, the creator of all of the marvellous world we see around us! Are you a meaningless natural accident living in a world of other meaningless natural accidents? Or are you one of God's unique creations, known and loved of God?

As Job undergoes an incredible level of torment and suffering, he keeps his lament directed toward God. But it is certain that not everything that comes out of his mouth makes us comfortable. For example, he cries out to God for death saying death would be so much better than life; a suicidal sentiment. Is Job right in all of the words he lifts to God? Absolutely not. But the key is that he never turns away from God even when he is in such error of thought. He always goes to God authentically right where he is in life. God can handle and correct our error when we are suffering. One of the most important things we learn from Job's lament...never let go of God. For God, when we are truly ready to receive Him will reveal Himself to us to redeem us and save us.
