En Europe, les sécheresses et les pluies torrentielles de l'an dernier ont bouleversé les fleuves et les mers. Dans une nouvelle étude, l'assureur de transport international TT Club a calculé l'impact des déchargements forcés pour routes asséchées ou des zones portuaires inondées.  Le comble pour un transporteur de marchandises, être obligé d'alléger ses bateaux pour arriver à temps. Géraldine Savin, coordinatrice du rapport de l'assureur britannique TT Club, explique que l'an passé, les sécheresses des fleuves en Europe ont poussé des industriels à n'acheminer que 25 % de leurs marchandises sur des navires habituellement bien remplis. Plus légers, les bateaux évitent ainsi de s'échouer. « Il faut d'abord comprendre le risque et régulièrement revoir et mettre à jour les plans et les procédures pour rendre l'industrie mondiale du transport et de la logistique plus sûre, plus sécurisée et plus durable », affirme-t-elle.À lire aussi Dans le sud de l'Allemagne, des inondations font plusieurs victimes100 milliards de dollars perdus chaque année Inversement, l'été dernier, les pluies torrentielles en Allemagne ont provoqué l'arrêt du transport sur le Rhin, le fleuve était impraticable. Pour les entreprises, ces retards imprévus nuisent à leur réputation. Cela fait partie des risques que les assureurs comptabilisent. L'avenir du transport fluvial est en péril. Et comme les fleuves conduisent aux mers, c'est toute la chaîne qui risque d'être perturbée. D'ailleurs, selon Hervé Deiss, qui dirige la revue Ports et Corridors, les effets sur l'économie mondiale se font déjà sentir : « Le risque climatique est important. Ça a été notamment mis en exergue sur le canal de Panama. Ce canal, c'est quand même la route entre l'Atlantique et le Pacifique. En raison de pluies assez faibles, le canal de Panama a dû restreindre le nombre de passages de navires par jour. Donald Trump a dit : "Je saurai mieux gérer le canal de Panama que les Panaméens. Donc, je vais reprendre le canal." Ça n'empêchera pas que s'il y a des problèmes d'eau, il y aura les mêmes soucis. Toute la logistique aujourd'hui est dépendante de plus en plus des conditions climatiques, au-delà de ce que l'on connaît. »L'an dernier, des piles de conteneurs se sont renversées, des grues se sont effondrées. This is the second conversation I had while teamed up with Gaute Einevoll at a workshop on NeuroAI in Norway. In this episode, Gaute and I are joined by Cristina Savin and Tim Vogels. Cristina shares how her lab uses recurrent neural networks to study learning, while Tim talks about his long-standing research on synaptic plasticity and how AI tools are now helping to explore the vast space of possible plasticity rules. We touch on how deep learning has changed the landscape, enhancing our research but also creating challenges with the "fashion-driven" nature of science today. We also reflect on how these new tools have changed the way we think about brain function without fundamentally altering the structure of our questions. In September Paul Middlebrooks, the producer of the podcast BrainInspired, and I were both on a neuro-AI workshop on a coast liner cruising the Norwegian fjords. We decided to make two joint podcasts with some of the participants where we discuss the role of AI in neuroscience. In this second part we discuss the topic with Cristina Savin and Tim Vogels and round off with a brief discussion with Mikkel Lepperød, the main organizer of the workshop, about what he learned from the workshop.
