Linda Yueh is an economist, broadcaster, and author. She is an Adjunct Professor of Economics at London Business School and a Fellow in Economics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. In this episode we are fortunate enough to spend some time with Linda discussing the biggest economic challenges of our time. Chris Caldwell asks how these challenges are exacerbated in the face of climate change, including the cost of adaptation, the transition to a low-carbon economy, and we discuss the impact of climate change on inequality. We focus on theses challenges throughout lens of Linda's latest book: The Great Crashes: Lessons from Global Meltdowns and How to Prevent Them. She argues that financial crises are not inevitable, but they can be prevented by understanding the underlying causes and taking steps to mitigate the risks. THE GREAT CRASHES has been praised by economists and financial journalists alike. The Financial Times called it "a timely and important book" and The Economist said it was "a valuable contribution to the debate about financial crises."  Chris also talks to Linda about her best seller, THE GREAT ECONOMISTS, and about which of those great economic thinkers would she believe is most influential on the way we deal with climate and its impact on the world economy. Dr. Yueh is a frequent commentator on economics and finance in the media. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4, CNN, and CNBC. "…sometimes things happen … but I think just being prepared, being open … stay curious, always wanting to learn. But also, … what made the great economist great is that they were always engaged with the big issues of the day, even if it wasn't easy, even if it was messy, even if it wasn't quantitatively as neat as their models." "…the amount of the amount of progress with setbacks that we have seen, you know, always makes me optimistic … that we've seen challenges before, some of which have been horrific challenges … and we have come through it." 2021 has seen some extraordinary economic changes. First a global economic rebound, then a global supply chain crisis, then inflation of a kind not seen in western countries for decades. And finally millions of people deciding they didn't even want to go back to work after lockdown. So what could 2022 have in store? Ed Butler discusses all this with Oxford economist Linda Yueh of Oxford University and author of the Great Economists, and Mohamed El-Erian, President of Queens College Cambridge. What can the ideas of history's greatest economists tell us about the most important issues of our time? Since the days of Adam Smith, economists have grappled with a series of familiar problems - but often their ideas are hard to digest, before we even try to apply them to today's issues. My guest today is Dr Linda Yueh, an accomplished economist, and leading writer and broadcaster in this field. In her new book, The Great Economists, she explains the key thoughts of history's greatest economists, how their lives and times affected their ideas, how our lives have been influenced by their work, and how they could help with the policy challenges that we face today. Linda Yueh is a fellow in economics at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, adjunct professor of economics at London Business School, and visiting professor at LSE IDEAS. Dr. Yueh has been an advisor to, among others, the World Economic Forum in Davos, the World Bank, the European Commission, and the Asian Development Bank. She is also a broadcaster and was the presenter of Talking Business with Linda Yueh when she was BBC Chief Business Correspondent as well as the former Economics Editor at Bloomberg TV. Here’s my conversation with Dr Linda Yueh, author of The Great Economists, in episode 431 of Informed Choice Radio.

It’s pretty rare that I have a legit economist on the show. It’s even rarer when said legit economist is a woman -- WOOT! On this episode we check both those boxes with Linda Yueh, an economist who holds senior academic positions at Oxford University, London Business School, and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Linda joined us to discuss her latest book, What Would the Great Economists Do?: How Twelve Brilliant Minds Would Solve Today's Biggest Problems. Since the days of Adam Smith, economists have grappled with a series of familiar problems – but often their ideas are hard to digest, even before we try to apply them to today's issues. In her latest book, Linda explains the key thoughts of history's greatest economists, how our lives have been influenced by their ideas and how they could help us with the policy challenges that we face today. In the light of the post-Great Recession economy, where growth has not accelerated as fast as in previous expansions, Yueh explores the thoughts of economists from Adam Smith and David Ricardo to contemporary academics Douglass North and Robert Solow. Along the way, she asks, what do the ideas of Karl Marx tell us about the likely future for the Chinese economy? How do the ideas of John Maynard Keynes, who argued for government spending to create full employment, help us think about state intervention? And with globalization in trouble, what can we learn about handling Brexit and Trumpism? Linda is also an accomplished journalist, who has spent time as an anchor/correspondent at the BBC and Bloomberg TV. With a strong social media presence, she’s worth a follow so you don’t miss any of her smart blog posts. “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment.
