Inside DEI Backlash with Dr. Poornima Luthra

In this episode of the Chad and Cheese Podcast, the boys interview Dr. Poornima Luthra, a TEDx speaker, associate professor at Copenhagen Business School, and author specializing in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Dr. Luthra discusses her upcoming book, Can I Say That?, which explores the backlash against DEI initiatives, rooted in her 18 years of academic research in talent management and HR. Key Points: Background and Motivation: Dr. Luthra's interest in DEI stems from her PhD research and personal experiences with social inequities as a woman of color. Her work focuses on creating fairer organizational environments. DEI Backlash: She observes a global backlash against DEI, particularly amplified in the U.S., with ripple effects in Europe. Companies face pressure to remove DEI training and terminology, especially those with U.S. federal contracts. Fear as a Core Issue: Dr. Luthra identifies fear as the root of resistance to DEI, manifesting in five forms: fear of change, fear of getting it wrong, fear of personal consequences, discomfort with bias, and fear of ineffective actions. These fears affect all groups, not just dominant ones. Zero-Sum Misconception: The backlash is fueled by a zero-sum view where advancing marginalized groups is seen as diminishing others' advantages. Dr. Luthra critiques the focus on quotas over systemic and cultural change, which perpetuates this mindset. Diversity Paradox: Diversity alone doesn't guarantee positive outcomes like retention or morale without equity and inclusion. Resistance to DEI can increase job dissatisfaction and insecurity, particularly for marginalized groups. Meritocracy Myth: Dr. Luthra challenges the notion of meritocracy, noting that perceptions of merit are biased by social conditioning around gender, race, and other factors. True meritocratic systems require dismantling these biases. Corporate Responses: While some companies abandon DEI, others, like Costco, maintain commitments, aligning with customer and employee values. Share price drops for companies retracting DEI efforts suggest market consequences. Allyship: Dr. Luthra emphasizes allyship through introspection, curiosity, humble acknowledgment of privilege, empathetic engagement, vulnerable interactions, and courageous responsibility. Her book aims to guide everyone in overcoming fears to engage with DEI effectively. Book Promotion: Can I Say That? is a workplace-focused guide for bridging divides and addressing DEI fears, aimed at both supporters and skeptics. It releases in May 2025 (June/July in the U.S.) and will be available on Amazon and other platforms. The episode blends humor, critical analysis, and practical insights, urging listeners to rethink DEI approaches and commit to systemic change despite resistance. We zoom out to the economy part of the circular economy, to talk about the Post Growth concept, with Marcus Feldthus. Together with Oscar Haumann, Marcus founded the Post Growth Guide back in 2023, as a learning space for people who want to understand the social and planetary boundaries so as to make real sustainability strategies, avoiding greenwashing, going beyond compliance, and leading the way forward for their business and wider industry. The platform has a growing membership community and offers explainers, case studies, online courses, books, and public talks. Marcus Feldthus is an entrepreneur from Denmark with a Master's Degree in Business from Copenhagen Business School. Marcus, with Oscar Haumann also started a consultancy called Abel, back in 2015. Marcus will explain the concept of Post Growth, its historical roots and what its aiming to achieve, and we talk about how the circular economy fits into a Post Growth system. We discuss how Post Growth is gaining traction and how it aligns with some of the other approaches to progressive economic, including degrowth and regenerative economics. Marcus tells us more about the Post Growth Guide and course, about his new book, “The Economies of Small Scale”, coming out soon, and why conversation starters are a great tool to help us all think about this from practical, business perspectives.

What if the key to creating a more sustainable future lies not in reinventing capitalism entirely, but in looking at how it already works elsewhere? In this episode of Nordic Visionaries, a special series inside the Innovation Storytellers Show, we welcome Dr. Robert Strand, Executive Director of the Nordic Center at UC Berkeley and Associate Professor at the Copenhagen Business School. With one foot firmly planted in American academia and the other deeply connected to Nordic thought leadership, Robert offers a compelling comparison between American and Nordic models of capitalism highlighting how the Nordics are approaching profit, climate responsibility, and long-term societal well-being. Drawing on his research, leadership courses, and real-world corporate experience, Robert shares why many of the assumptions embedded in American business culture deserve to be challenged. He explains why sustainable capitalism is desirable and necessary and how it can be built on models already in practice across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Whether it's universal childcare, patient capital, stakeholder-driven innovation, or strong democratic institutions, Robert walks us through the policies and cultural mindsets that allow Nordic companies to be both competitive and conscientious. We also explore how sustainability can drive innovation and how American business leaders might need to rethink their relationship with speed, growth, and quarterly returns. Robert calls for a shift in leadership priorities, urging executives to act as advocates for society as much as for their bottom line. From planetary boundaries to AI, from corporate structures to childcare, this conversation challenges long-held ideas about what makes capitalism work. Can we borrow from Nordic approaches to shape a more resilient and just economy? And are American businesses ready to reimagine their role in a changing world? Tune in and share your thoughts.

He holds dual Ph.D. degrees in industrial economics and management from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and in industrial management from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (cum laude). His research focuses on the digital transformation of manufacturing, maritime, and healthcare sectors, platform ecosystems in the business-to-business (B2B) context, and artificial intelligence. He has published extensively in journals such as Organization Science, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Technovation, and Industrial Marketing Management. He also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Product Innovation Management and Journal of Business Research. Summary: In this episode, Marin Jovanovic discusses the evolution and characteristics of B2B platforms, contrasting them with B2C platforms. The conversation covers the peculiarities of B2B platforms, including data governance, network effects, transaction value, and the complexity of governance in multi-firm ecosystems. Marin also highlights the growing importance of data utilization, modular structures, and the emergence of generative ecosystems and meta-organizations in the B2B space. The discussion further explores the potential of AI in conjunction with platforms, particularly in the medical sector. Key Discussion Points: Definition of Platforms in the B2B Context: Marin shares his journey into platform research, transitioning from servitization to industrial platforms. Main Findings and Peculiarities of B2B Platforms: The discussion highlights differences in network effects, the higher value but lower volume of transactions, and the increased awareness and demands of participating companies compared to B2C platforms. Data Governance in B2B Platforms: Key challenges include the complexities of data governance, revenue sharing, and the project-specific nature of agreements. The Role of Humans in Matchmaking: The conversation explores whether highly specific B2B transactions might require more human intervention in matchmaking rather than relying solely on algorithms. Cyber-Physical Integration: The importance of merging information systems and management in the context of autonomous solutions is emphasized. Challenges in Explaining B2B Platform Models: The barriers in conveying the concepts of B2B platforms and ecosystems to managers, using the example of 5G technology, are discussed. Modularity and Generative Ecosystems: The significance of modularity in both architecture and management for fostering flexible and reconfigurable B2B ecosystems is highlighted. Open Innovation and Open Organization: The discussion connects B2B platforms to concepts of open innovation and broader organizational collaboration. Microservices and Ecosystem Envelopment: The relevance of microservices for customization and the increasing convergence of platforms into "platforms of platforms" or meta-organizations is explored. Data Monetization in B2B: The potential for companies to sell and leverage data, drawing parallels between B2B and B2C models with examples like smart cities and business analytics, is discussed. Physical Assets as Pivots for B2B Platforms: The idea that valuable physical assets owned by companies can serve as the core of B2B platforms, using the concept of "solution enabler platforms," is examined. Different types of B2B platforms based on control and decision rights, such as consortium platforms and algorithmic governance, are also introduced. Future Research Focus on AI and Platforms: Marin shares his current research interest in the application of AI in specific sectors like medical technology and how AI solutions interact with existing hospital systems and potentially aggregate on platforms. In this episode of the All Things Sustainable podcast, we're unpacking new proposals to simplify sustainability reporting in Europe.  Released in February 2025, the European Commission's Omnibus Simplification Package would drastically reduce the number of companies subject to corporate sustainability reporting requirements in a bid to slash red tape, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The proposals include measures to simplify the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the EU Taxonomy.   If adopted, the proposals could alter the sustainability reporting landscape for companies doing business in the EU. We speak to Marc Rotter, counsel at law firm Ropes & Gray, who explains why the timeline for the legislative process remains uncertain and could last several months.   We talk to Andreas Rasche, Professor of Business in Society at the Centre for Sustainability at Copenhagen Business School, who explains how the proposals could change investor access to data.  “For investors that, at the end of the day, means less data by less companies. And I think it should be a legitimate concern to investors as it limits access to comparable and also reliable ESG data,” Andreas says of the proposals.  And we hear from Aleksandra Palinska, Executive Director of Eurosif, a European forum that promotes sustainable investment.  This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.   Copyright ©2025 by S&P Global   DISCLAIMER   By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Ussama Makdisi, professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss the subject matter of his book Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World. Then, she speaks with Rune Moller Stahl, assistant professor in political economy at Copenhagen Business School, to discuss his recent piece in Jacobin entitled "Tesla Has Bitten Off More Than It Can Chew by Picking a Fight With Swedish Unions." First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza, the UAW's expansion, the GOP primary, GOP policy, and GOP politics, before touching on some of the opening statements at the International Court of Justice. Ussama Makdisi then joins, diving right into the deep historical context of the case against Israel at the ICJ, looking first at the roots of Zionism in the 1800s as a response to intense antisemitism in Europe, and as a project that took inspiration from Europe in its nationalist, colonialist solution. Expanding on this, Professor Makdisi explores the prevalence of multi-religious coexistence across the Middle East in that era, particularly between Arabs and Jews, how that extended to Palestine, and the culture of denialism around both pre-Nakba Palestinian culture, and the Nakba itself, before touching on the roots of said issues in the west's Islamophobia, and antisemitism. After briefly touching on the inspiration Israel takes from the white supremacist regimes of South Africa and Jim Crow USA, Ussama and Emma discuss the establishment of Israel within the context of Europe's greater colonial project in the Middle East, before wrapping up the interview by touching on South Africa's case at the ICJ.  Rune Moller Stahl then walks Emma through the evolving multi-industry and multi-national strike against Tesla in the Nordic countries, beginning with Tesla technicians walking off their jobs in demand of a collective agreement, before sympathy strikes swiftly spread across unions throughout Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. After expanding on the cultural divide between Elon Musk's anti-union attitude and the Nordic model, Professor Stahl parses through the distinct roles of unions in the United States and Sweden, and how they differ in power, organizing, and action. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they tackle John Fetterman's turn as he speaks against South Africa's case against Israel at the ICJ, Nick from Pittsburgh dives into political organizing in PA, Corey from Indianapolis discusses ZuckNuts, and Donald Trump gives a genuine answer on the GOP's fanatical pro-life segments. HIGH FINANCE: Laurie Taylor talks to Brett Christophers, Professor in the Department of Human Geography at Uppsala University, Sweden, whose latest book argues that banks have taken a backseat since the global financial crisis . Today, our new economic masters are asset managers who don't just own financial assets, they also own the roads we drive on; the pipes that supply our drinking water; the farmland that provides our food; energy systems for electricity and heat; hospitals, schools, and even the homes in which many of us live—these all now swell asset managers' bulging investment portfolios. They're joined by Megan Tobias Neely, Assistant Professor in the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School and author of a study which takes us behind the designer suits and helicopter commutes to provide a glimpse of the lives and times of the mainly white men who dominate the hedge fund industry where about 10,000 firms manage $4 trillion in assets and the average earnings are $1.4 mm a year - which can rise to several billion. Producer: Jayne Egerton
