fWotD Episode 3109: Hensley Henson Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 8 November 2025, is Hensley Henson.Herbert Hensley Henson (8 November 1863 – 27 September 1947) was an English Anglican cleric, scholar and polemicist. He was Bishop of Hereford from 1918 to 1920 and Bishop of Durham from 1920 to 1939.Henson's father was a devout follower of the Christian sect the Plymouth Brethren and disapproved of schools. Henson was not allowed to go to school until he was fourteen, and was largely self-educated. He was admitted to the University of Oxford, and gained a first-class degree in 1884. In the same year he was elected as a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and began to make a reputation as a speaker. He was ordained priest in 1888.Feeling a vocation to minister to the urban poor, Henson served in the East End of London and Barking before becoming chaplain of a 12th-century hospice in Ilford in 1895. In 1900 he was appointed to the prominent post of rector of St Margaret's, Westminster, and canon of Westminster Abbey. While there, and subsequently as Dean of Durham (1913–1918), he wrote prolifically and sometimes controversially. He was tolerant of a wide range of theological views; because of this some members of the Anglo-Catholic wing of the Church of England accused him of heresy and sought unsuccessfully to block his appointment as Bishop of Hereford in 1917.In 1920 after two years in the largely rural diocese of Hereford, Henson returned to Durham in the industrial north-east of England as its bishop. The area was badly affected by an economic depression. Henson was opposed to strikes, trade unions and socialism, and for a time his outspoken denunciation of them made him unpopular in the diocese. Some of his opinions changed radically during his career: at first a strong advocate of the Church of England's continued establishment as the country's official church, he came to believe that politicians could not be trusted to legislate properly on ecclesiastical matters, and he espoused the cause of disestablishment. He campaigned against prohibition, the exploitation of foreign workers by British companies, and fascist and Nazi aggression. He supported reform of the divorce laws, the controversial 1928 revision of the Book of Common Prayer, and ecumenism. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:35 UTC on Saturday, 8 November 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Hensley Henson on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ayanda.

The young Prince Edward arrives at The Temple Beautiful and complains to Richard about his uncles imprisonment. Richard tells him his uncles Rivers and Dorset were dangerous. Edward protests but is interrupted by the arrival of the Mayor of London who greets him with flattery. Edward asks about the whereabouts of his mother and brother, the Duke of York. Hastings arrives and tells Edward his mother and brother are in sanctuary. Buckingham orders Hastings to bring York to them by force. The Cardinal protests but Buckingham convinces him there's no need for sanctuary under these circumstances. Alone with his uncle Richard, Edward asks where he and his brother will be staying before their coronation. Richard tells him they're to stay in the Tower. Edward protests but is interrupted by the arrival of his younger brother. Little York teases Richard until he learns they're going to the Tower. He starts to argue but Edward tells him not to fear. They're taken away. Richard and Buckingham call in Catesby to test Hastings' loyalty. Once alone, Richard promises Buckingham the Earldom of Hereford. Later that night, a messenger from Stanley arrives at Barrington Hall to warn Hastings that Richard is going to kill him. Hastings reassures him that Richard won't harm him. Catesby arrives and hears from Hastings that he won't support Richard taking the throne, even though he had his enemies (Rivers and Dorset) killed. Stanley rolls up and warns Hastings not to trust Richard. Buckingham saunters out to meet them and takes them to the Tower for the coronation. Elsewhere, in a warehouse basement in Pomfret, Rivers begs for his life as Ratcliffe drowns him. Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. The late-Renaissance, English composer Thomas Weelkes – famed for his wonderful music and his wayward behaviour – set words from Psalm 132 in the jubilant seven-part anthem "O Lord, arise into thy resting-place" which the choir sings at the start of this reflection. He died in 1623 whilst visiting a friend in Fleet Street and so ended up being buried here at St Bride's. His tombstone can be seen in the main Crypt Chapel. Our reading is the Parable of the Widow and the Unjust Judge and Alison cautions against drawing the wrong conclusion from this in her reflection. We close with the hymn "O thou who camest from above" written by the Methodist and great hymnist Charles Wesley and sung to the tune Hereford composed by his grandson, Samuel Wesley. Recognizing and Addressing Cowherd Nutritional Deficiences Nutritional balance is a cornerstone of herd health and productivity. According to Dr. Kelly Sanders of Westway Feed Products, deficiencies often go unnoticed until performance suffers. Signs Of Nutritional Deficiencies In Cattle Poor Body Condition: Thin cows, visible ribs, or weak muscling. Reduced Fertility: Open cows, delayed cycling, or poor conception rates. Coat and Hoof Issues: Rough hair coats, brittle hooves, or slow shedding. Growth Challenges in Calves: Reduced weight gains or uneven growth patterns. How To Correct Deficiencies Forage Testing: Identify nutrient gaps in hay and pasture. Targeted Supplementation: Provide liquid or block supplements to balance protein, energy, and minerals. Management Adjustments: Ensure adequate feed availability during high-demand stages such as lactation and breeding. Dr. Sanders emphasizes that proactive nutrition not only boosts herd performance but also maximizes returns on investment in genetics. Planning For Feeder Cattle Marketing In 2026 Looking ahead, market planning is critical for cattlemen aiming to maximize returns on their calf crop. Kurt Donsbach of StoneX Financial shares insights on what producers should prepare for in 2026. Key Marketing Considerations Market Volatility: Expect fluctuations tied to feed costs, beef demand, and global trade. Uniformity Matters: Buyers continue to pay premiums for uniform, weaned, and preconditioned cattle. Leverage Genetics: Aligning bull selection with market goals increases calf value. Forward Contracts & Risk Management: Explore tools like futures, options, and video sales to lock in profitability. Action Steps For Producers Evaluate herd performance and set marketing goals early. It promises fewer parts, lower costs, and faster assembly. But Jan Griffiths asks a bigger question: if automakers can reinvent the product, why not reinvent the way business gets done? That's where Kate Vitasek comes in. As the creator of the Vested Methodology, Kate has spent more than 20 years studying how companies negotiate. She joins Jan to unpack how the old “win at all costs” mindset still lingers in the industry and why it's holding leaders back.Kate walks through the history: the 80s and 90s were all about leverage and power. The 90s brought interest-based bargaining, which used data instead of bravado. More recently, companies are experimenting with collaboration, where both sides actually work together to solve problems and create value. But change doesn't come easy. Short-term wins might seem like progress, but they often backfire. Kate describes this as “shading,” when the other side feels mistreated and resists or retaliates. She uses examples from union negotiations, supplier relationships, and even global trade disputes to show how this cycle keeps repeating.Collaboration offers a different path. Instead of focusing only on price or concessions, it creates agreements that match intent with execution, protect both parties, and provide space for innovation.Kate explains how her Vested framework turns adversarial supplier or union relationships into productive, long-term partnerships built on trust and results. Still, consistency is key: you can't have one division trying to collaborate while another sticks to power plays.Jan ties this back to leadership. Command-and-control might have worked decades ago, but it doesn't inspire people now. Negotiation that depends on control and bravado is outdated in the face of current challenges. Leaders who show up with openness, clarity, and a willingness to co-create solutions will succeed. And the advice for leaders listening? Start small. You don't need to change everything overnight. Pilot a collaborative negotiation on one deal, measure the results, and use that success to expand the approach. Themes discussed in this episode:The shift from power-based negotiation to collaborative partnerships in the automotive industryThe evolution of negotiation models from the 1980s to today's business environmentThe role of trust, transparency, and shared outcomes in strengthening supplier relationshipsWhy authentic leadership aligns with collaboration better than command-and-control managementHow adversarial union negotiations can transform into long-term, cooperative agreementsThe connection between cultural consistency and successful collaborative business modelsWhy outdated power tactics undermine innovation and efficiency in global supply chainsHow the Vested Methodology creates sustainable value for both buyers and suppliersFeatured guest: Kate VisatekWhat she does: Kate is a recognized authority on strategic partnerships and the creator of the Vested® business model, a framework that helps organizations move from “what's in it for me” to “what's in it for we.” An accomplished author of seven books and a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, she combines award-winning research with real-world...

Changes to bluetongue restrictions mean farmers can transport vaccinated livestock from Wales into England without the need for a costly pre-movement test. Sheep and cattle that have been jabbed can be taken to a market within 12 miles of the Welsh border such as Hereford, Ludlow and Oswestry. Since the start of July, trade in livestock between England and Wales has been affected by restrictions designed to stop the spread of bluetongue disease. The midge-borne virus poses no threat to public health or food safety but can be fatal for animals like sheep, cattle and goats.Routine border checks on live animal imports from the European Union are to be suspended, ahead of the introduction of the UK's new SPS - or sanitary and phystosanitary - deal with the EU. The government said the agreement would cut costs and red tape for businesses, while speeding up trade in food. Synthetic fertiliser is one of the biggest costs for salad production, not to mention its environmental impacts. One big producer, G's, on the Cambridgeshire Fens says trials of a new composting technique called Johnson-Su has led to a reduction in fertiliser use as well as increased crop health. A new rural crime strategy in Wales has made heritage crime or damage to ancient monuments a particular focus. There are fears treasure thieves are targeting Wales' most ancient sites – in an attempt to unearth rare and valuable artefacts for the black market. Nighthawkers use the cover of darkness to sneak onto protected sites and use their metal detectors. Authorities say they receive up to 20 reports of nighthawking at Wales' most precious historical monuments each year. Presenter = Steffan Messenger Producer = Rebecca Rooney
