His parents, who are both from Herefordshire, eventually settled back there before Tom turned 10 years old - but even before then he had developed a passion for history. At first, prompted by the film Titanic, he was preoccupied by boats, steam engines, and all things maritime, only then, while Tom was studying Creative Writing at the University of Portsmouth, he developed an interest in the stories of the county he calls home.Out of this new interest his new superhero alter-ego was born: The Herefordian Historian, with Tom's blog being a brilliant repository of history, legends and all sorts of Herefordshire curiosities, which he has been maintaining since the lockdown. All the while, Tom has also become Hereford Waterworks Museum's writer and editor, and he is also a member of the Mayor of Hereford's Guild of Guides, so there really couldn't be a much better or more passionate person we could hope to speak to for this episode! To learn more about Tom, including his writing and his other work, do visit his website at herefordianhistorian.co.uk, and otherwise do please join us around the Three Ravens campfire for a chat about angry ghosts shaking cathedrals, thousands of years of territorial conflict across the Welsh Marches, little drummer boys saving cities with peas, and so much more!We really hope you enjoy it, and will be back on Monday with our brand new County Episode all about the history and folklore of Derbyshire!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Send us a textIn this month's delayed episode, Col Andy Taylor and Rev Paul Roberts take a walk out to Hoarwithy, between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye on the banks of the river Wye. The impressive Byzantine / Romanesque / Tuscan beauty of St Catherine's Church catches their eye and they explore then local men commemorated on the War Memorial there. The great great uncle of regular listener Steve Parkes was one on those commemorated here. George Edwards of the Herefordshire Regiment is buried in St Catherine's Churchyard and in 2018 a service was held to rededicate his repaired headstone. George was wounded at Gallipoli and in Palestine and died of wounds in Bristol. Other men Andy and Paul look into include 61 year old Royal Naval Reserve officer Ernest Baker, who died in September 1945.The next port of call is the New Harp Inn below the church in the centre of the village. In 1908 the newly formed Herefordshire Regiment of the Territorial Force camped behind the pub as part of a recruiting drive. The men repaired to the New Harp and managed to drink the pub dry. A contemporary newspaper account reports that a fracas ensued and several windows were broken, which had to be paid for by the Regiment. Despite their best efforts Paul and Andy weren't able to repeat this feat!Support the showIf you like what you hear, don't forget to like and subscribe to help us reach a wider audience. EPISODE 69 DETAILS Line 1 Hereford Cattle & Nebraska Cultivated Meat Update Line 1 Hereford Cattle For Sale, Division about Nebraska Cultivated Meat Ban EF1 Cattle Company: Why Line 1 Hereford Cattle Welcome to EF1 Cattle Company where our Line 1 Herefords are meticulously linebred to ensure consistent, high-performing genetics, making them a top choice for commercial beef production. Their proven predictability enhances herd uniformity, fertility, and feed efficiency, adding long-term value for ranchers focused on genetic improvement. EF1 Cattle Company Line 1 Hereford Cattle: Built For Longevity, Soundness, & Exceptional Performance At EF1 Cattle Company, our Line 1 Hereford two-year-old bulls are carefully raised using a “low and slow” approach to ensure optimal longevity, soundness, and performance in real-world conditions. These bulls are raised entirely on their mothers' milk, with no creep feed, to develop naturally. We wean in early winter and transition to a developing ration, preparing bulls for spring turnout on lush grass where their superior genetics truly shine. During their second year, our Line 1 Hereford bulls spend summer and fall grazing native grass, with access to free-choice minerals and salt. As sale time nears, bulls are moved to a 40-acre paddock near headquarters, where they receive a precisely balanced, low mega-calorie ration. Unlike other bulls pushed too hard for fast growth, our bulls develop muscle shape and thickness gradually—just like an athlete training steadily for peak performance. This method ensures the bulls have the endurance to cover more cows while maintaining their condition, making them an ideal choice for ranchers seeking long-lasting, high-performance genetics. Nebraska Ag Interests Push Back On Proposed Cultivated Meat Ban At least two major ag groups are not supporting a proposal to ban cultivated proteins as proposed last month by Neb. Gov. Jim Pillen and State Sen. Barry DeKay. The Nebraska Farm Bureau and Nebraska Cattlemen separately announced support for specific provisions in the proposal that requires special labeling and standards for protein derived from the cells of food animals, but the entities do not support a total ban of the lab-produced products. The Farm Bureau supports the restriction of plant-based and cultivated proteins being labeled “meat” and favors establishment of state-level laws covering potential mislabeling of such proteins. Similarly, the Cattlemen support clear labeling requirements for alt-proteins but not a complete ban as product developers should be able to compete in the marketplace SPONSORS Trans Ova Genetics https://transova.com/ @TransOvaGenetics American Gelbvieh Association https://gelbvieh.org/ @AmericanGelbvieh Allied Genetic Resources https://alliedgeneticresources.com/ @AlliedGeneticResources Clear Springs Cattle Company https://www.bredforbalance.com/female-sale Axiota Animal Health https://axiota.com/ @MultiminUSA Jorgensen Land & Cattle https://jorgensenfarms.com/ @JorLandCat Ranch Channel https://ranchchannel.com/ @RanchChannel Questions & Concerns From The Field? Beef on Dairy Research: Growth, Efficiency, and Carcass DataIn this episode of The Moos Room, Brad continues the deep dive into beef-on-dairy research, focusing on data collected in Minnesota. This is the second installment of a three-part series, where we examine how different beef breeds perform when crossed with dairy cattle.Key highlights include:✅ Pre-Weaning Performance: Limousin crossbred calves showed greater growth efficiency than Holstein calves, consuming less milk while gaining more weight.✅ Breed Comparisons: Angus, Simmental, Charolais, Hereford, and Limousin crosses were evaluated from birth through harvest. Hereford calves had the highest weaning weights, while Charolais and Simmental showed strong growth through finishing.✅ Carcass Data: Charolais and Hereford yielded the heaviest carcasses, while Limousin crosses had the largest ribeye areas. Angus and Hereford crosses finished the fastest, reaching market weight in fewer days.✅ Meat Quality & Economics: Most animals graded Choice, with some achieving Prime. Economic analysis showed that Charolais and Hereford crosses brought in the highest total revenue due to their larger carcass sizes.Next week, we'll wrap up the series by exploring the role of genomics in beef-on-dairy systems. Tune in to find out if genomic testing is worth it for terminal animals!

Liberty to Cider – with Elisha Mason We take an apple-tinted journey into the past with our guest this week, Elisha Mason, @museumofcider Archives and Collections Officer. Leading us into the mysterious (and, apparently, heavily haunted) archives and cellars of the magnificent Museum of Cider in Hereford, Elisha talks us through British Cider Riots, and how they inspired revolution in America, dream teapots and finding an unexpected foot in a box (different museum…) Continuing to answer the big questions we ponder who would be the best starship captain amongst historical pomologists and orchardists, ask what an ingenio is and string out the great Cider Voice debate: Bulmer's Norman vs Thorn Pear. Also, is Adam secretly the Scrooge of Wassailing (and can he even pronounce it?) We loved recording this episode with Elisha. Our end-of-year extended episode features Mandy from Worcestershire and Jon from neighbouring Herefordshire.Mandy explains the events which led to her setting-up a big cats Facebook group in Worcestershire, as a hotline for reports and discussion. Her own sighting was a close-up view of a black leopard type of cat, and instantly drew her to the subject.Jon watched a puma slink through his garden one night in 2003, close to the house he was renovating. His initial shock and concern turned to respect for big cats, as he and his wife experienced three different large cats in and around their remote garden until they moved in 2018. Jon kept a ‘big cat diary' throughout that time – he takes us through the events for this episode. Word of the week: estrangement12 December 2024
Starting out in the Angus industry wasn't easy in the 1980s and 1990s, but as the old adage goes: where there is a will, there is a way. Doug Schroeder, of Clarence, Iowa, and Charlie Boyd, of Mays Lick, Ky., talk about the beginnings of their businesses and the opposite end of that continuum, transitioning to the next generation. They cover the tough decisions they had to make while serving on the American Angus Association Board of Directors and the progressiveness of those before them. This episode takes listeners from the early years of “working at Hardee's and fixing tires” to living the dream of raising Angus cattle, kids and crops. HOSTS: Miranda Reiman and Mark McCully GUESTS: Charlie Boyd and Doug Schroeder Charlie Boyd II, Mays Lick, Ky., graduated from the University of Kentucky, and after a short stint away, returned back to his family's Boyd Beef Cattle operation. He's served as president of the Kentucky Angus Association, and he and Paula volunteered as co-chairs of the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in 2003 and 2012. He enjoys cattle shows and has evaluated cattle across the United States. Doug Schroeder, Schroeder Angus, and his wife, Glenda, were married in 1982 and started their operation near Clarence, Iowa, with the purchase of five head. Send us a textIt's an especially exciting episode this week as we welcome an author who is local to us, here in Colorado, and we'll be welcoming her to our local book club meeting next month.Lara's book, The Table: Seasons on a Colorado Ranch, was the result of completing her MFA at Western State University and submitting it for consideration for publication by the University's press. It was selected and Lara was surprised and incredibly grateful. It was a process of taking a series of personal essays and turning them into a full-length memoir. Her memoir shows her grit and gratitude for the seasons of life and reflections on the golden moments to embrace when navigating through difficult times. It's a memoir about her life on her family's ranch where they raise Hereford cows and gather thousands upon thousands of bales of hay each summer. What you'll discover as you read is it's not just the stories of her family's experiences, but an invitation to walk in her shoes and understand the experience of ranchers in our area in Colorado. You'll learn about the challenges being faced by ranchers as developers moving into the area are offering attractive sums of money to acquire land for multi-family housing developments. There's insight into cattle ranching and the meaning of its impact on our environment. She was fortunate to have the support of her family who gave her space to write her book, but there were still struggles with staying focused. You'll be interested to listen and learn about a special visitor to one of her writing spaces. Lara masterfully weaves together various threads of her life story to connect the pieces that have contributed to her family's success in their ranching business and in their lives. It hasn't always been easy, but there's a true sense of gratitude and fortitude in the work being done. There's a discussion of the editing process and how even with a publisher you can find errors after a book has been printed, but you can reach out and make sure any changes are made before future books are printed. You'll appreciate it when she talks about getting distracted and how easy it can be to be pulled away from your work. We've all been there. It's why finding a place that's not in your own backyard can be beneficial to your writing process. It can be too easy to decide to do the laundry, mow the lawn, or any other number of house chores. We invite you, like Lara does in her memoir, to join her at The Table: Seasons on a Colorado Ranch. If you've written personal essays, you're sure to find inspiration for turning your stories into a full-length memoir. Who is Lara Richardson?A former white-water rafting guide on the Arkansas River, LARA RICHARDSON lives with her husband and five kids on their family ranch in Salida, Colorado, where they raise over 300 Hereford mother cows and calves and grow over 30,000 bales of hay each summer. A voice for land stewardship, sustainable beef production, and the family farm, she is a 2021 graduate of Western Colorado University's MFA Program in Nature Writing. For over 170 exclusive minisodes, check out icmap.co.ukAt the time of recording, of the 105 Whole Life Orders issued in the United Kingdom over the last forty years, only four of them have been females. The most recent addition, was dubbed “a killer nurse” for the alarming and heart-breaking number of newborns that died in her care. Another, together with her partner, terrorised an entire region as they sexually assaulted and murdered 5 children, before burying their bodies amongst the moors. Whilst another, acting alongside her husband, used their “house of horrors” to hold captive, torture, rape and murder at least a dozen females, predominantly teenagers, between the ages of 8 and 27.But today's focus… Was a killer of men. It is believed that, over a period of ten days in March of 2013, 30-year-old Joanna Dennehy went on a killing spree across the city of Peterborough, butchering three men in the process, before discarding their remains in nearby ditches. Here, she claimed to have “Got a taste for it” and that the feeling was “Moreish”. Not satisfied by the Peterborough Spree, Joanna travelled 155 miles to the city of Hereford, where the brutal - and completely random attacks - started once again. In the space of less than two weeks, three men were dead, two men were severely injured, and Joanna Dennehy was on the run… This ultimately resulted in Joanna becoming recognised, and widely regarded, as one of Britain's most terrifying serial killers. My guest is Bob Hereford, who tells his story of how C.S. Lewis's writings and teachings changed his life. One of C.S. Lewis's books is Surprised by Joy." Hereford's book is Surprised by Jack." Jack was C.S. Lewis' nickname. Bob was surprised that C.S. Lewis could make Christianity "make sense." He now realizes that Lewis was not only making Christianity make sense, but given the world we live in today, his writings were prophetic, making our perverse world make sense - and not in a good way.
