Send us a textToday we're chatting about Romantasy Bookcon, Los Angeles, 2025! This amazing convention put on by Fabled Fantasy Events was Liz and Ashley's first, but it surely will not be our last! We talk about our overall faves and fails of Bookcon (our faves being mostly the amazing community) and consequently, what our top five tips for attending your first book convention are plus 5 rookie mistakes to avoid. In short: get there early, map out a plan and get to know the layout, bring snacks and come prepared to trade treasures! We also want to emphasize how important and impactful the author panels were, by posing many of the questions to each other that we were lucky enough to see some of our favorite authors answering. Why do we appreciate a strong FMC? Who were the female characters in popular media who we looked up to? And what are the qualities in our favorite MMCs that make them special? Among several others. And don't worry, we have a rapid-fire Romantasy Bookcon smash or pass to wrap it all up.Check out these author interviews? ⬇️We interviewed Callie Hart all about her NYT Bestseller Quicksilver! Vann YouTube: Get Your Life Together, Girl TikTok: Get Your Life Together, Girl About our Guest: Danielle A. Vann has always had a passion, scratch that, thirst for understanding people's life stories and how those experiences are used as a benefit or detriment. Yet, it wasn't until 2016 that she turned inward and realized her own story needed to be examined and healed after a series of major life shifts, specifically the death of two parents and nearly losing her middle daughter to kidney failure within the span of forty-five days. Some call those shifts “the dark night of the soul,” as they do feel as if there is no light left in the world. However, Danielle calls them “the light of the soul” because often, it isn't until those challenging moments that the fullest expression of the person, the soul, shines! When Danielle set out to heal and fully thrive in the light of her soul, she longed for resources and support that felt intimately connected to her spirituality, mental, emotional, and physical well-being and path. Yet, no matter what she tried, outside of meditation, she continually felt disappointed by what she found. Finally, taking her healing into her own hands, she found her true calling. Now, as a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist, renowned Life Coach to women, Master-Level Advanced Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner, 100-hour Meditation Instructor through the IMMA, HeartMath Trauma-Sensitive Certified Practitioner, MSBR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) instructor, Sound Healing Therapist, Reiki Practitioner, Master-Level Emotional Intelligence Therapist, Emotional Freedom Tapping Practitioner, DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) therapist, Positive Psychology practitioner, and trained in Energy Healing Medicine, Subconscious release, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Neuroscience, PTSD and Anxiety, Danielle has created the ultimate blueprint for getting your life together, healing, creating self-love and inner peace. This blueprint combines psychology, mind and spiritual healing, somatics, neuroscience, mindfulness, purpose work, and the development of emotional intelligence. It's a total mind, body, and soul awakening through the principles of Eastern and Western beliefs and practices. This blueprint has served thousands of women as it has been uniquely tailored to their individual journeys. Danielle's mission is to help women across the globe, whether it's through teaching, speaking, her widely popular Instagram page @getyourlifetogethergirl, her in-person/online courses, 1:1 session, or on The Get Your Life Together, Girl Podcast, where you can find meditations, mindset resets, tools and practices, and fascinating conversations with other female therapist and coaches. Vann is also a nineteen-time intentional award-winning author. Prior to working in mental health and healing, she spent years as a scriptwriter, reporter, and evening/morning news anchor. Danielle earned an Oklahoma Broadcast Education Associate award, an Associated Press Award, and an Emmy nomination. Her love of storytelling led her into writing. While Vann started her publishing career as a children's picture book author, she has expanded her genres to include Young Adult and Self-Help, which are her true passions. Her internationally award-winning Young Adult five-part series, The Whizbang Machine. Vann has received nineteen international and national awards and was named to the prestigious Texas Library Association's Texas Bluebonnet longlist. She is also an inductee of the Texas Authors Institute of History, the only museum dedicated to preserving authors' works and those who support writing and reading in Texas. In addition, Vann has penned two personal development/women's motivational books entitled: Get Your Life Together, Girl & You Are Not Broken & Your Life Does Not Suck, which are forthcoming. Danielle is also the author of Gracie Lou & the Bad Dream Eater and The Very Tall Tale of Ranger, the Great Pyrenees & His Adorable Friend, Miss Keys. In addition, she co-authored the inspirational/self-help nonfiction book Building Faith Through a Carpenter's Hand with The Learning Channel (TLC) and A&E's celebrity carpenter Brandon Russell. Her daily writings are featured on the wildly popular Instagram page @getyourlifetogethergirl. Danielle has been featured on NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, iHeartRadio, USA Network Radio, Sirius Radio, and nationally syndicated radio and podcasts around the United States and Canada. Her work has been featured in Foreword Magazine, Publisher's Weekly, Story Monster Ink, Mansfield Magazine, Mansfield Now, and at numerous book festivals, including the Bologna Italy Book Festival, the Book Expo of America, and BookCon. Her work has even been featured in the White House and the Halls of Congress in Washington D.C. If you keep waiting for life to happen, it's not gonna happen. You got to make life happen. Theolder I'm getting the more I realize I have to make my life happen. Everything that I want to do, I'm going to do it because I want to get to the point where I get to the age where I can't move anymore or I can't think anymore. I would just advise people just go for it. Just do it. No matter what it is. Don't let social media let you think that your dreams are insignificant. Just go for it. Just do it. Be happy with yourself when you do it.
On the surface, it was just another writer's festival, with perhaps some local food vendors. But as soon as the Ottawa International Food and Book Expo got underway, it became clear something about this one was a little bit ... off.First, a local group warned of far-right speakers on the panels. Then the MCs pulled out. The food vendors weren't quite sure what was going on. Some sponsors either removed themselves or claimed they'd never been associated with the festival in the first place ... and, well, there was more. So what exactly happened in the nation's capital on the last weekend of April?GUEST: Luke LeBrun, editor of Press Progress We love feedback at The Big Story, as well as suggestions for future episodes. In this episode, I talk with New York Times bestselling author Eva Chen and illustrator Sophie Diao about their picture book I Am Golden, a moving ode to the immigrant experience, as well as a manifesto of self-love for Chinese American children. Eva Chen is a first-generation Chinese-American who grew up in New York City. She blames her deviation from pre-med at Johns Hopkins University on a love of fashion and beauty instilled in her by her mother, whose perfect bob and lipstick made a permanent imprint on her impressionable young mind. Previously the editor-in-chief of Lucky, Eva has also written for ELLE, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Vogue China, the New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. She is currently the head of fashion partnerships at Instagram, where she is guilty of the occasional duck-face selfie. Eva lives in New York City with her husband and two children. She is the author of Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes, A Is for Awesome, and Juno Valentine and the Fantastic Fashion Adventure. Sophie Diao is an artist in San Francisco. As research for the book Sarah and the Big Wave, she surfed a wave that she's pretty sure was over one foot tall. She loves illustrating natural wonders and is the talent behind many a Google Doodle. Fifteen years ago I interviewed Michael Cader at Book Expo in Toronto. The advice he had for publishers at the time remains remarkably fresh and valuable. Michael is the founder of Publisher's Lunch, the largest book publishing industry publication in the world. Each day it's e-mailed out to more than 45,000 people. We talk about process, and transparency, extras, the role of a creative person, finding audiences while you're alive, the satisfaction of engaging with an audience, bringing work to the public, enabling public discussion, and more.
The podcast has had a longstanding invitation to take the show on the road, specifically to Bloomington, Minnesota, for a comic book show. As a podcast that has occasionally called upon the world of comic books for source material, it seemed like a logical destination. Don't read comic books? It shouldn't matter. We talked about things even we didn't expect to.
16, 2-6-SHOW NOTES Today's poems have not been published. Some were a continuation of my writing and posting on Facebook as I had done with the poems in Living In God's Rhyme. Three of today's poems are about color. I am not an artist so I write words of color that are not seen by the eyes, but hopefully are seen by the heart. THE COLOR OF WORDS Can words paint pictures Like a brush on a canvas? That was the question. What is the answer? The brush paints a scene, But what does it mean As its many colored hues Present many varied views? The brush paints with color, The color of the rain, The color of one's pain, The color of life's strain, The color of a smile, The color of a traveled mile, The color of two in love, The color of the sky above. The colors of the world By the brush are swirled. The colors of our dreams, Just what do they mean? Colors are everywhere, A breath of fresh air. Words, what do they do In their monotone hue? Words paint the emotions Of peace and the commotions Of the life we live And what God does give. There is color in our pain, There is color in God's reign, There is color as we strain Our tear filled eyes to see Beyond the dark what will be. There is color in our story, There is color in God's glory. Through words we will see Colors, the many colored hues, Through words holding the clues To blessings from above, The blessings of God's love. Every word spoken, every word heard is another brush stroke in the painting of our story in Gods' glory. What do the dictionary and a box of crayons have in common? They tell our story. 6/4/19, tcarter (read date) It has been a few years since I had read today's poems. I was surprised when I could find three about colors. I was especially surprised at the short period of time between writing the previous poem and the next one. More on that after this, A Flood of Colors. A FLOOD OF COLORS Red, Orange, Yellow, And green, Blue, Indigo, And violet, Together become a rainbow, A promise of God so long ago. The blood of Jesus, The blood of the lamb, The blood that saves us, Salvation, God's plan. The fire of God's deliverance As we passionately praise Through our faithful observance Of the life God did raise. The glory of God now shown, Finding joy in our faith, Knowing we will see God's face. Through His reign we have grown. The new beginning, Promised restoration From lives of sinning, Now with adoration. The authority of Heaven, Fed on bread unleavened, Led by the Holy Spirit, God's word, we hear it. The infinite and the finite, One is God, the other man. Jesus is the bridge over the chasm That was created by Adam. The priesthood, the kingship, The royalty, the mediator, It is Jesus we worship Who is One with the Creator. The rainbow, a sign of the mercy of God (Genesis), The colors, the glory of God (Ezekiel), At the end, the power of God (Revelation), The rainbow, a reflection of God, Yesterday, Today, And tomorrow. Post Script: An artist paints with colors, A poet paints with words. Both tell a Story Of all God's Glory. Tim Carter July 7, 2019 (read date) At the end of June and the first day of July in 2019 I attended Book Expo in New Your City. I had been invited by my publisher, Lettra Press to be one of three authors to showcase their books. The last day was BookCon and the three of us gave out and signed copies of our books. There's a lot to say about 2020. Like every other industry, publishing wasn't spared from the pandemic. Readers and authors around the world reckoned with the current events that shaped our lives. As we say goodbye to 2020, we look back at some of the biggest changes and themes we saw in YA books and publishing as a whole. One thing is for certain: things definitely changed this year. Support Us: You can support our show and website when you buy your YA books from our Bookshop storefront. In this episode: Thank you for the kind reviews and comments we've received in recent months! Are we seeing less YA book movie adaptations? Are television adaptations the new endgame? Book marketing has really transformed this year. There are some upsides and downsides. Authors seem more accessible to international readers. This was a tough year for anyone who loved BookCon and BookExpo. Will we ever see book conventions like these again? Readers have been holding authors and publishers accountable — but that was even more true this year. Everyone should reflect on the books they choose to promote and give prominence to. Lisa Jewel joined Carol from London to discuss her newest novel, Invisible Girl. Carol and Lisa first met at BookExpo a few years ago, where they quickly bonded over Lisa’s thriller writing. Carol has interviewed Lisa before, which brings a very funny moment to the interview. They talk about Lisa’s inspiration for Invisible Girl, which came from a rather innocuous sighting, which got her imagination going. There are intertwined stories of three characters; two who live in the same neighborhood. Lisa reveals that the third character did not have a voice at the beginning and she then clearly emerged and demanded her own robust storyline. Lisa and Carol talk about the incel ideology that one of her characters has embraced, and the strange ways it's creeped into society. And the conversation leads to Lisa describing her thoughts on perfectionism, how it influences her work, and how it affects her life. Hey there word nerds! Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Marilyn Singer. Winner of the National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Poetry, 2015, Marilyn Singer has written more than 100 books in many genres. She created a poetry form, the “reverso,” featured in three of her award-winning collections: Mirror Mirror, Follow Follow, and Echo Echo. She co-hosts the Poetry Blast, which features children’s poets reading their work, at the American Library Association conference and other conventions. Marilyn lives in Brooklyn, NY and Washington, CT with a dog, a cat, and two doves, as well as her favorite dance partner, who also happens to be her husband. On a more personal note, Marilyn is someone I consider a dear friend. We first met while standing in line for a book signing at BookExpo when I was just a newbie and I remember thinking “OMG this amazing author is talking to little ol’ me!” I’ve had the pleasure of featuring her on this show before (she was one of my very first interviews) and her books are among my children’s absolute favorites. So it is truly a pleasure and an honor to welcome the fabulous poet and children’s book author, Marilyn Singer back to DIY MFA Radio! In this episode Marilyn and I discuss: The inspiration behind Follow the Recipe Tying together the illustrations and poems Structuring a book of poems The reverso form The power of constraint in poetry How to get started writing poetry Plus, her #1 tip for writers. Book festivals are the highlights of the year for book lovers around the world. In Los Angeles there is the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which is the largest book fest in the country. It often draws more than 150,000 book lovers, book industry professionals, organizations, journalists, businesses, speakers and thought leaders. There is also the annual Beach Bound Book Bash, of which Books That Make You helps present each year. It is an annual literary tea that features authors reading from their books as well as snacks, prizes and other festivities. Unfortunately, that even isn’t happening in 2020, which would have been the 5th annual BBBB. In New York there is BookExpo and BookCon which draw thousands of fans and literary professionals. Across the United States, as well as around the world, ComicCons, pop culture conventions, writers conferences and other expos and fairs that feature books are either cancelled or postponed because of Covid-19 and social distancing rules. There is a solution for people who crave this bookish community. For those who want to come together in unity, there is an option. The LA BookFest is that event. On Saturday May 9th the event will live stream and feature panel discussions, conversations with authors, publishing industry experts, thought-leaders, activists, creatives, journalists and more. Plus, there will be author AMAs, videos of authors reading from their books, a huge bookish giveaway presented by Books That Make You, a music-infused after party, and of course, lots and lots of books. The guests in this episode join host Desireé Duffy to talk about the LA BookFest. KJ Matthews is an award-winning media and entertainment journalist and regular contributor to BBC News, DW News, and previously was with Extra News and CNN for more than a decade. She is also the founder of Traveler Confidential--an eco-luxury website for travelers. Deborah Kobylt is an award-winning journalist as well. She is best known for her work on CNN, Fox11 LA, KCAL9 News, Turner Entertainment and her successful podcast Deborah Kobylt Live and president of Kobylt Media. KJ and Deborah have joined forces to bring together a panel of journalists for the LA BookFest. It is about Integrity in Journalism during the Covid-19 crisis and beyond. Find out more on LABookFest.com and check out this and other exciting panels.

Feb. 14 marked the 2020 Boskone book expo and I had a great time, as usual. I got the chance to speak to a lot of great writers, and the interviews are collected in the first of two episodes. In the first, Michael McAfee of the Post Meridian Radio Players talks about the show they did at Boskone “The Silver Shade: Help From The Shadows.” Michael tells me about the casting process and how they plan for the worst to happen. Author Tabitha Lord and I haven't spoken in years and there is a lot to recap! She's completed her sci-fi “Horizon” series and tells me about the urban fantasy story she's working on now, which includes a lot of research. Last in this episode is Vincent O'Neil, who has been hard at work shopping around the script for his “Handler Hank” short story. He goes into the transition from short story to script and what other of his works he'd like to see on the screen.
