In the final episode of season three of the Conversations on Climate podcast, Chris Caldwell sits down with John Mullins, Associate Professor of Management Practice in Marketing and Entrepreneurship at London Business School, to explore the realities of entrepreneurship.    Together, they dive into thought-provoking topics like whether society is overselling the entrepreneurial dream, the myths surrounding venture capital, and how entrepreneurs can create meaningful impact in today's world.   "For entrepreneurs who want to make an impact on the climate challenges we face today? I think my advice to them would be, don't worry about trying to solve the entire climate. … rather carve out some little piece of that where you bring the skills and insights to that piece of the problem that you think you have a, technology or a business model or some other approach that can solve that piece of the problem if if we have a thousand entrepreneurs, each solving a little part of the problem we'll make a lot of progress."   This engaging conversation unveils six key entrepreneurial mindsets, shares actionable insights for navigating challenges, and offers strategies to help entrepreneurs focus on solving real problems. The Power of ESG: How Consumers are Driving Companies Towards Sustainability with Henri Servaes

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 29, 2024 70:24

In this video, Henri Servaes, the Richard Brealey Professor of Corporate Governance; Professor of Finance from London Business School discusses his research on the intersection of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and finance.   He reveals that consumers are increasingly interested in how products are made, where they are made, and how companies treat their employees, the environment, and the community. This growing interest is leading consumers to substitute away from companies that are weaker in ESG to companies that are stronger in ESG, resulting in a significant increase in sales for companies with better ESG performance.   His research indicates that a 1% standard deviation increase in environmental and social performance can lead to an almost 9% increase in sales for a given product in a given country at a given point in time. He also discusses how this trend is being driven by changing societal attitudes towards women and the importance of having women in leadership positions. Ultimately, he argues that companies that perform better on environmental and social dimensions are able to sell more products and that this is driving a stock price differential.   However, he cautions that not all academic research supports this finding and that companies need to consider the cost of improving their ESG performance when deciding whether to invest in it. Stay tuned to find out more about the Power of ESG and how consumers are driving companies towards sustainability. Companies that are stronger in ESG cannot charge a higher price per unit, but they get more sales, because just people buy more of their products... I've seen consumers now showing a lot more interest in, you know, how the product is made, where the product is made, how the company, you know, treats its employees, how the company treats the environment, how the company treats the community. The companies that perform better on environmental and social dimensions, do they actually sell more products? Do customers do consumers actually care about the environmental and social performance of the companies? And indeed, we we find that they do.   References: LBS Bio: https://bit.ly/4c52XaG Comprehensive Resources Page: https://bit.ly/3yhzE6Q Researchgate: https://bit.ly/3SqVYC2 Linkedin: https://bit.ly/4fohn8M Author page: https://bit.ly/4fpKubQ   ***********   This episode of Conversations on Climate is a podcast brought to you by UNITED RENEWABLES. They also delve into the complexities of tire emissions, the benefits and drawbacks of synthetic fuels, and the potential of nuclear power as a solution to the CO2 problem. This thought-provoking conversation aims to answer the question Why Electric Vehicles Are NOT The Future (Yet)? and the answers will leave you questioning the assumptions you have about the future of transportation and the role of data in shaping environmental policy. Stay tuned in to learn more!   …and what's happened for 30 years is we've offshored CO2 production… it's just being produced in other countries. We have moved things progressively offshore in this perverse world where you set something up as a metric which you know is not true. You lead to perverse outcomes, and it's exactly the same as diesel. You set up a test, a measure which you knew to be wrong. In this episode of Conversations on Climate, host Chris Caldwell of United Renewables sits down with Glada Lahn, Senior Research Fellow at Chatham House, to discuss the intersection of climate change, water scarcity, and migration in the Middle East. Glada shares her personal journey of focusing her career on the Middle East, initially drawn to the region's politics and Islamic art and architecture. She discusses her work on oil companies in the Middle East and how it sparked her interest in the issue of climate change and its impact on the oil and gas sector. The conversation delves into the importance of water as a shared resource and the potential for conflict and collaboration between countries in managing it. Glada also highlights the challenges of addressing water scarcity in the context of the Middle East, where many countries are highly dependent on food imports and are experiencing rapid urbanization. The conversation touches on the links between geopolitics and the environment and the impact of climate change on migration patterns. Glada emphasises the importance of considering the interconnectedness of these issues when addressing the challenges facing the Middle East. This episode provides a unique perspective on the complex issues of water scarcity, migration, and climate change in the Middle East, drawing on Glada's extensive experience and expertise in the region.   "...there's no easy answer to this to improve things in a genuine way for the long term...not just papering over the cracks, because that won't work." "Water... is a shared resource that is extremely valuable. It's essentially more valuable than oil. But it can also spill across borders. Helm emphasises the importance of focusing on capital assets, rather than just flows, and of considering the intergenerational impacts of our actions. So then how do I avoid the danger of hand-picking one story…so I wanted to write a book about misinformation, about how we need to make sure that we tame our biases and respond to evidence based on its scientific accuracy, and not whether we like these findings. …this highlights the importance of not being swayed by one particular study, even if it's published in the top scientific journals, because even editors and peer reviewers can make mistakes. …the solutions to misinformation are all within ourselves.   REFERENCES: https://alexedmans.com/ https://alexedmans.com/books/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/aedmans/?originalSubdomain=uk   ******** This episode of Conversations on Climate is a podcast brought to you by United Renewables in association with LONDON BUSINESS SCHOOL.. In this video, Sean Kidney Co-founder and CEO of Climate Bonds Initiative discusses the importance of green bonds and financing the transition to a low-carbon economy. This conversation highlights the urgency of addressing climate change and the potential for green bonds to help fund renewable energy projects, improve energy efficiency, and promote sustainable agriculture. Kidney emphasises the need for clear standards and regulations to ensure the integrity of the green bond market and prevent greenwashing. This video makes a compelling case for the critical role that green bonds can play in financing the transition to a more sustainable future. With the global bond market worth $130 trillion, green and sustainable bonds currently make up just 4 trillion of that total. However, kidney believes that this market has the potential to grow at least ten times in the next decade, making green bonds the biggest asset class in the world. Watch this video to learn more about the role of green bonds in financing a sustainable future.   “We are learning to be adults when the planet needs us to be adults... if we do grow up, we become the consciousness of Gaia. If we don't, we're toast.”  More About the Climate Bonds Initiative Their science-based taxonomy has certified $300 billion in climate bonds across 16 sectors and 20 instrument types, and they have $34 trillion in assets represented at board level.     Some of the insights in this episode include:  Climate as a species-level opportunity (if we can take it)  The trillion-dollar question: are green bonds growing fast enough?  The power of pension funds – and why they're finally waking up  How emerging green markets can solve the West's demographic timebomb  Eat quinoa, not corn (and other lessons from green bond taxonomy)  Climate resilience funding: many flavours of gelato!  Last-mile CCUS, the Icelandic volcano way  Should we just cancel COP? "… you're thinking, what are we doing?! I'm going to say, how can you not be passionate when you're looking at your future corroding before your eyes in the science?" "So my belief is that we need to change the financial system to be future-fit to meet our needs and, of course, that means bonds that are green will become the biggest asset class."   Listen to the full podcast or watch the video to learn more about the role of green bonds in financing a sustainable future.   REFERENCES: https://www.climatebonds.net/about/speakers-bureau/sean-kidney https://uk.linkedin.com/in/seankidney   This episode of Conversations on Climate is a podcast brought to you by United Renewables. THREE words to describe this episode's conversation with Freek:  Eclectic – Myth-busting - Storytelling Everyone likes to think of themselves as a highly evolved person – and a great leader to. But strip away the jargon, polish and pretence...and aren't we're all just a bunch of naked apes?   Only now they're in charge of the most powerful organisations and technologies in the history of the planet – and it turns out they are as naked as we are.   This episode digs into the truth of organisational culture – and draws its lessons from some surprising places.   What do a tribe of Papua New Guinean cannibals have to teach us about the perils of Total Quality Management?   Which other sacred cows of might actually be ‘idea viruses?'  And is your firm secretly infected?  Freek Vermeulen is Director of Strategy, and Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, at London Business School.   His erudite, bubble-bursting books include Breaking Bad Habits, and Business Exposed: the Naked Truth about What Really Goes On in the World of Business.    HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS FASCINATING EPISODE INCLUDE: GIVING YOUR PRODUCT AWAY IS GOOD FOR YOUR PAYING CUSTOMERS TOO. Aravind Eye Care began no-charge cataract treatment for India's poorest – and outcomes soared for their richer customers too. Could this surprising message help get subsidised green tech to the global South?    SOME MANAGEMENT THEORIES CAN BECOME VIRUSES. Survival of the fittest doesn't always apply in business, especially when good ideas are championed out of context – like Total Quality Management. Bad ideas can spread faster than they kill.   LESSONS FROM THE BABY-MAKERS: DO HARD THINGS ON PURPOSE. Freek's study of IVF shows that incentivising ‘selection at the gate' hurts long-term competitiveness. ESG metrics and divestment could stop firms taking on hard-to-decarbonise problems.   PUBLIC MARKETS PUNISH JARGON. Freek's analysis of 1,300+ deals shows that CEO ‘management speak' – even well-intentioned – turns investors off. Leaders who use ESG jargon risk eroding trust in their own useful climate action.  "… because we imitate this high performing firm, including the practices that may have contributed nothing to them being high performers…harmful management practices, just like cultural practices, including eating deceased relatives and like viruses can spread and survive…" "…and suddenly the world of business isn't as simple as that either …therefore not being judgmental or angry at people, but helping to understand the context and changing the context for people in organisations so that they don't make these wrong choices anymore. That's actually what's important."   REFERENCES: https://www.london.edu/faculty-and-research/faculty-profiles/v/vermeulen-f https://uk.linkedin.com/in/freek-vermeulen-a68617 https://www.goodreads.com/author/list/4558503.Freek_Vermeulen   Conversations on Climate is a podcast produced by United Renewables and this episode is in association with London Business School It brings together the best minds from academia and business, to offer their experience and expertise in the face of climate change –from game theorists to corporate diplomats, and oil industry veterans to micro-algae entrepreneurs.  For more top-quality interviews with our incredible guests, subscribe to our YouTube channel or follow us on Twitter. Its President and Founder is Bryan Garcia, and Sara Harari is Associate Director of Innovation and Strategy Advisor to the President. The fascinating conversation with Chris Caldwell takes place at Yale and covers a wide range of questions and delivers us an amazing insight into the philosophy of Green Banks and this Green Bank in particular: … having a vision of a planet protected by the love of humanity, is that you can't have environmentalism without humanitarianism. … you can't save the trees by avoiding people. It is fundamentally about caring about each other. If we do that, then we are going to solve the climate crisis. But we have to be able to put our arms around each other first and then mobilize capital investment … to deliver the results that we're after. How to Decarbonise Transport with Professor Brian Caulfield

Professor Brian Caulfield wants us to do everything, everywhere, all at once. Transport makes up a huge part of our emissions – around 20-25% in Ireland and the UK, and closer to 40% in the US.   Knocking those numbers down is no easy task. A system as complex and inter-dynamic as our transport network is a big beast: and there are so many competing visions.   Should we get behind a big public transport push – a metro for every city?   Is the answer self-driving EV's? Or redesigning cities to be car-free?   Should we use big data for efficient car-sharing? Or is the answer behaviour change, under the cosh of mandated charges and zoning laws?   This episode's guest understands that complexity better than anyone. And his number one policy priority?   Do it all – now!  Introducing Brian Caulfield  This week's guest is a leader in the field of sustainable transport science. Surviving and thriving in the age of continuous disruption. In this engaging episode, Chris Caldwell delves into a thought-provoking discussion with Costas Markides, a seasoned Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School, currently holding the Robert P Bauman Chair of Strategic Leadership.   Change, Change, Change!   The constant of change. This single word encapsulates our modern existence – a signal, an invitation, a diagnosis, a directive. But is change truly constant? Perhaps this era is uniquely different. This is the perspective of our guest this week. We've entered an era Costas describes as 'continuous disruption.' And of all these disruptions that create a sense of permanent urgency, climate change is the greatest.  Luckily, Costas has a few ideas about how to thrive – as well as survive – in this new age.   From winning hearts and minds to segmenting audiences, embracing innovation at scale, and breaking free from stagnant environments – we explore strategies to navigate these challenges effectively. Throughout such a successful career, it's no surprise that Costas has won all sorts of awards and honours for his teaching, whilst also publishing half-a-dozen books, from All The Right Moves: A Guide to Crafting a Breakthrough Strategy in 2000 to Organising for the New Normal: Preparing your Company for the Journey of Continuous Disruption in 2021.  " …why is it that some companies responded well to digital disruption and some fail … and one of the major findings is that it's not necessarily the strategy that they follow and it's not necessarily the leadership … but it was the attitude …"   This week's episode:  Section one: continuous disruption  Section two: mobilising people for climate   Section three: segmenting the green message  Section four: the knowing/doing gap  Section five: creativity, innovation, and behavioural barriers to change  Section six: can big firms be radical?  Section seven: innovation at the bottom of the pyramid  Section eight: the attitude fix    REFERENCES: Costas at LBS https://uk.linkedin.com/in/costas-markides-b848a31 Costas Markides Books   Conversations on Climate is a podcast produced by United Renewables in association with the London Business School Energy Alumni Club.  It brings together the best minds from academia and business, to offer their experience and expertise in the face of climate change –from game theorists to corporate diplomats, and oil industry veterans to micro-algae entrepreneurs.  For more top-quality interviews with our incredible guests, subscribe to our YouTube channel or follow us on Twitter. Rupert Merson is an adjunct Professor in the Department of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School. He has been teaching growth, governance and turnarounds at LBS for twenty-five years, and has written several books across a wide range of subjects. Outside of LBS he was an accountant, Director and eventually Partner at BDO Stoy Hayward until 2009, when he set up his own successful advisory shop specialising in helping family firms around the world.  The theme of this episode resides “deep in the human psyche.” It's about what matters most. And it has clues for sustainability too. What can family firms teach us about a long-term approach to business? How can we best mediate intergenerational conflict? And what works to preserve unique purpose and values in times of transition? This week's episode includes: Section one: The importance of intellectual diversity Section two: growing pains and changing attitudes Section three: clarity, purpose and communication for growth Section four: Why do we start businesses? Section five: Family firms: modelling climate conflict and transition Section six: Teaching the corporate turnaround "… there's Eisenhower's line, isn't there? … that plans are useless, but planning is important … For me, that's the thing that's most meaningful … it doesn't mean it's been a waste of time doing the planning because your plan will be wrong." "… planning is an act of lifting your head up and thinking about the future. If you do lift your head up and think about the future, doesn't mean it's going to work out well for you. But I venture to suggest is a lot more likely to end that well for you than if you take the view that because plans are always going to be wrong, the act of planning is not worth doing in the first place." Harnessing the Power of Nature to Combat Climate Change

Professor Jane Stout talks to Chris Caldwell about biodiversity, natural capital accounting, and bridging the economy-ecology divide  So many of the tenets of modern economics – from commodification and simplification to substitution and maximisation – seem to run counter to foundational truths of ecology such as holism, complexity, and the incommensurability of value.   As we face both the climate crisis and the sixth mass extinction (in large part due to the excesses of capitalism) we have to wonder if there is a way back.   Can economics and ecology work together again?  This episode's guest believes so. Jane Stout - Professor of Botany and VP of Biodiversity and Climate Action at Trinity College Dublin - is a deep domain expert in the academic field of ecology and biodiversity, with over 120 papers and €4 million in research funding to her name.   She is also a leading figure in influencing nature and climate policy in her home country, particularly by engaging economically as co-founder of Natural Capital Ireland.   "… you think about your petri dish of soil or your spoonful of soil from the ground … there's connections in that little ecosystem, but there are connections across the whole world and everything's connected." "… the ecological viewpoint of connectivity about humans being part of nature, about the physical environment and the living environment being intricately intertwined, has, of course, shaped everything I do and everything that I think about." "… I think being an ecologist gives you a fantastic perspective. It's kind of overwhelming, but it does give you that perspective about the fundamental importance of nature in our lives and that connectivity." "…and I like to think of sustainability as as as the sort of the wedding cake idea of the environment: the biosphere, the living world underpinning our societies which underpin our economies."   REFERENCES: https://www.tcd.ie/Botany/people/stoutj/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/jane-stout-8269401b/ https://www.royensoc.co.uk/about-us/people/professor-jane-stout/   This week's episode includes:  Section one: the origins of an ecological perspective  Section two: why biodiversity matters (for business too)  Section three: confronting global extinction  Section four: Montreal, 30x30 and the Biodiversity COP breakthrough  Section five: understanding the climate-biodiversity nexus  Section six: biocircularity, natural capital, and the limits of growth     Conversations on Climate is a podcast produced by United Renewables in association with the London Business School Energy Alumni Club. The one reason why industry might miss the Net-Zero window: Abel Martins-Alexandre

We are in the middle of a revolution in the infrastructure of modernity. The plumbing of the 20th-century economy – the fossil fuel infrastructure that is in everything we do – is being ripped up. New, clean energy networks are being laid down. It is the most remarkable transformation in the economic substructure in history. And yet…for all the celebration of the transformation in demand around climate solutions, infrastructure is fundamentally a supply-side puzzle. And that means commodities. Even as we shake free from the shackles of oil, our net-zero future becomes shackled to other critical minerals instead. Copper. Lithium. Cobalt. Time to ride another supply-side supercycle. But is the world ready? Can we mine what we need both quickly and sustainably? This episode's guest is the perfect person to ask. Abel Martins Alexandre spent a career in commodity financing, as VP at Natixis, Group Treasurer at Rio Tinto, and now MD and Head of Infrastructure, Energy and Industrials at Lloyds Bank. An expert both in the mining space and ESG finance – including a stint on the Financial Markets Standards Board – Abel has a sharp insider's eye on these under-discussed markets. His view is not to be missed! "… for the discussions around chips and the scarcity of chips, which is which is true, there's a broader conversation about the scarcity of metals, which I think is going to hit all of us, I suppose more in a more meaningful way in the next the next couple of years… " "Well, the best advice I can give… I'm borrowing from many others, many great people I've met in my career,  … as the motto says, if we fail to prepare, we are preparing to fail. And that's very, very important … Always to know, to prepare well, to have a plan and to be resilient around a plan, which is to adapt very, very quickly." "… because the risk to physical infrastructure is real, because supply chain disruptions are happening and also because actually even in the context of higher inflation, which many people have not witnessed in their in their careers, you need to think about what it means for the business …" REFERENCES: https://www.lloydsbank.com/business/corporate-banking/banking-with-us/our-people/specialist-heads/abel-martins-alexandre.html https://www.linkedin.com/in/abel-martins-alexandre/?originalSubdomain=uk       Conversations on Climate is a podcast produced by United Renewables in association with the London Business School Energy Alumni Club. In this episode, we sit down with Alex Edmans, Professor of Finance and Academic Director of the Centre for Corporate Governance at London Business School. Alex specialises in the integration of classical financial theory and ESG, from worker pay and diversity to climate and sustainability.   His book Grow the Pie: how great companies deliver both purpose and profit won the Financial Times award for Excellence in Sustainable Finance Education, and his TED talk ‘What to trust in a post-truth world,' has been viewed over 2 million times.    In this  episode, we discuss:  Alex's personal mission  Who we should listen to on climate?  Economics vs gut feel in ESG  Growing the pie (and taking climate seriously)  The end of ESG?  Embracing subjectivity  Stakeholders, shareholders, and getting Friedman right  Is pricing in ESG impossible?  Finding your potential  '… as we said throughout the theme of this talk, if you do something which is good for society, hopefully you will trust that the profits will follow. And I say the same thing is true for career. If you do things because you enjoy it and you think it's having a positive impact, ultimately it would lead to financial success and security later on.' 'So before coming up with a time management plan, think about what the objective of your life or career is. It's like knowing how to get to a destination. We need to know where to go to first. And so I define my personal mission statement as to use rigorous research to influence the practice of business.' '…really important topics like climate change that does attract a lot of people and with very good intentions… People do want to contribute to it, but sometimes you might be contributing without some research behind it. And so this might lead to shooting from the hip rather than saying what is based on evidence.' If you want to find the future of clean energy, where should you look?  This week's guest is here to tell us that tomorrow's climate revolution is already here – and it's Africa that is pointing the way.   It's not a question of billions in government support, ethical consumerism, or benevolent foreign aid. This is clean technology and innovation blazing a trail as the best possible solution for energy markets in the Global South, thriving on their own merits – and leapfrogging older, western models in the process.   This episode we have the pleasure of hearing from serial entrepreneur, impact investor and global clean energy expert Yariv Cohen. As founder of Ignite Power, Yariv has brought distributed solar electricity to 2.5 million homes across sub-Saharan Africa.  It's a fascinating story of innovation, problem-solving, and empowerment – and turns a lot of Western cleantech assumptions upside-down. For anyone who believes in the power of green energy to change lives, this is a must-listen!  Becoming a climate internationalist  What drives distributed solar in Africa?  Solar without subsidies  Infrastructure, innovation and the leapfrog effect  Impact investing in the Global South  Can Africa's entrepreneurs save the world?  The future of carbon markets – global or local?  How to find your climate career   So today there is close to a billion people without access to power. So imagine a hut … two rooms in the middle of Africa, which is always dark. There's no floor and there's no light. And during the day, sometimes you get a little bit of light from the small windows, and during the night you burn kerosene to walk around, not to fall … And then we come and we offer them light. We offer them a solar panel, a battery, three lights, mobile charger and a radio, and suddenly that house becomes a home. The kids come in. They're not all the time outside. They can work longer. The woman is safer in the house … And then there's the phone charging … REFERENCES: https://impactentrepreneur.com/author/yariv-cohen/ https://ae.linkedin.com/in/yarivc?original_referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F https://uk.linkedin.com/company/ignite-power https://powerupnow.org/portfolio/ignite-power/ Conversations on Climate is a podcast produced by United Renewables in association with the London Business School Energy Alumni Club. The Great Economists: How can their ideas help us today? - Dr Linda Yueh

Linda Yueh is an economist, broadcaster, and author. She is an Adjunct Professor of Economics at London Business School and a Fellow in Economics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University. In this episode we are fortunate enough to spend some time with Linda discussing the biggest economic challenges of our time. Chris Caldwell asks how these challenges are exacerbated in the face of climate change, including the cost of adaptation, the transition to a low-carbon economy, and we discuss the impact of climate change on inequality. We focus on theses challenges throughout lens of Linda's latest book: The Great Crashes: Lessons from Global Meltdowns and How to Prevent Them. She argues that financial crises are not inevitable, but they can be prevented by understanding the underlying causes and taking steps to mitigate the risks. THE GREAT CRASHES has been praised by economists and financial journalists alike. The Financial Times called it "a timely and important book" and The Economist said it was "a valuable contribution to the debate about financial crises."  Chris also talks to Linda about her best seller, THE GREAT ECONOMISTS, and about which of those great economic thinkers would she believe is most influential on the way we deal with climate and its impact on the world economy. Dr. Yueh is a frequent commentator on economics and finance in the media. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4, CNN, and CNBC. "…sometimes things happen … but I think just being prepared, being open … stay curious, always wanting to learn. But also, … what made the great economist great is that they were always engaged with the big issues of the day, even if it wasn't easy, even if it was messy, even if it wasn't quantitatively as neat as their models." "…the amount of the amount of progress with setbacks that we have seen, you know, always makes me optimistic … that we've seen challenges before, some of which have been horrific challenges … and we have come through it." Investment bankers are consummate middle-men. The wonderful thing about being in the middle is it trains you to look at problems from all sides – and when ‘all sides' takes you from Europe to South America to Canada to Asia, you develop a truly 360° perspective. In this episode, we survey global ESG trends from great heights with the help of one of the world's leading green energy bankers, Eduardo Famini Silva. Eduardo Famini Silva is Director of Renewables and Utilities at RBC Capital Markets. A specialist in M&A and financing in the energy sector, he has over fifteen years of experience working across the world – from Asia to the Americas – with an increasing focus on clean energy markets Some of our highlights include: oil to renewables – evolving a career the natural way is ESG inherently utilitarian? How clean energy can solve the trilemma (for good!) green M&A: a dance of growth and consolidation decarbonisation vs high interest rates: which is winning today? US vs EU: is a green trade war brewing? hydrogen: is there a future?  energy justice: co-investing in social outcomes an optimistic banker's view of the future '... So I would hope that in ten years... developed markets would have renewables and other energy transition technologies established as mainstream as an investable class that not only the most risk takers can bet on, but that everyone can bet on, including the most conservative investors...' Julio Dal Poz. He is a true veteran of the industry: from his beginnings as an engineer on deep-water drills; through stints as analyst and consultant for upstream explorers and energy markets (including a brief covering digital tech and transformation in the sector); to his years at Equinor, where he finished up head of the Advisory Board for Strategy, working on the clean energy transition. Today, he turns his experience and expertise towards helping energy firms design their own transition strategies for our future world, at FTI Consulting. Is there a serious future for hydrogen in our sustainable fuels mix? And how would we transition from blue hydrogen as a by-product of hydrocarbons to truly green, sustainable and affordable hydrogen production? Chris Caldwell of United Renewables and host of The Conversations on Climate podcast talks with industry veteran Julio Dal Poz. Brazilian-born Julio Dal Poz started his career in deepwater oil drilling as an engineer. Through many twists and turns – working across Norway, Brazil, the UK, and the Middle East - he is now a consultant advising traditional energy firms on making the transition to clean energy with FTI Consulting. Are CEOs really overpaid Do ESG Targets work Are stock markets too short-termist Is climate change truly a 'shareholder value' concern Do we need to get business out of politics - or the opposite '...So what's absolutely clear is that individuals can't solve this by themselves. And I think it's wrong to entirely put the emphasis on individuals. And that is part of the reason why I haven't taken an excessively harsh approach to this...But on the other hand, I think the idea that Governments have got to solve this, say, let's just wait for governments to act is kind of for the birds as well.
