In this replay from 2022, I'll share why it's so important to build a sobriety toolbox. I really wish there was a better word than “toolbox”, though. “Toolboxes” are used on things that are broken. I am not broken and neither are you. Nevertheless, today I'll share the tools that I rely on not just to cope, but to flourish in sobriety. These tools have lifted me up and given me nourishment, rest and focus. I hope you can find something here to add to your own sobriety toolbox! Do you long for the freedom of a sober lifestyle in a world that constantly celebrates alcohol? Laura McKowen joins us in this conversation to share her own experience and journey to sobriety. By unraveling the complexities of societal pressures, Laura will guide you towards a life of clarity, strength, and sobriety. Get ready to discover the solution that will empower you to thrive in a society that may not fully understand the beauty of living alcohol-free. "Leaving that mental door open just gave me a lot of freedom until eventually I knew I would never drink again." - Laura McKowen About Laura McKowen Laura McKowen is a powerful voice in the world of sobriety, providing guidance and support to individuals navigating the challenges of living in a society that normalizes alcohol consumption. With almost a decade of sobriety, Laura's journey has been marked by honesty, vulnerability, and a deep understanding of the complexities of addiction. Through her writing and speaking engagements, Laura explores the connection between trauma and addiction, shedding light on the underlying reasons that drive individuals to seek solace in alcohol. Supportive Community Her relatable and compassionate approach offers a beacon of hope to those struggling with their own relationship with alcohol. With her platform, Laura has created a safe and supportive space for individuals to share their stories and find the strength to embark on their own path to sobriety. Her insights and experiences serve as a reminder that recovery is possible and that there is a vibrant and fulfilling life waiting beyond addiction. Sobriety in a Society That Normalizes Alcohol: Laura McKowen's journey to sobriety began with a flood of questions. How did she end up in this place? Why was she the one with the problem while everyone else seemed to be able to drink without issue? And why was society so protective of alcohol, making it taboo to talk about the truth? These questions consumed her, and in her search for answers, she turned to writing. Laura had always been a writer, using journals to navigate her emotions since she was nine years old. Writing helped her uncover the underlying reasons behind her drinking and provided a much-needed outlet for her struggles. She started sharing her writings, initially with a lack of clarity about what she was going through, but as she continued on her path to sobriety, she became more open and transparent. It was through writing that Laura found her voice and began to speak her truth, no matter the consequences. Writing became her tool for self-discovery and healing, allowing her to shed the lies and embrace the power of honesty. And now, as an author, she uses her words to inspire and connect with others on their own journeys to sobriety. You can read more about Laura's writings at lauramckowen.com. Overcoming Social Expectations and Pressures with Alcohol The societal expectations and pressure to consume alcohol can quickly turn a casual drink into a perceived need. It becomes, distressingly, often easier to conform than question or challenge these deep-seated norms. Breaking this cycle requires a radical, conscious rethink of our personal choices and their alignment with societal expectations. Laura shares about the gripping social pressure to drink and the subsequent feeling of alienation for those choosing sobriety. Laura's account provided a real-life illustration of social expectations and their impacts. Her story is a testament to the strength of will it takes to question and alter these deeply entrenched patterns. The conversation amplifies the urgent need for societal change and individual resolve in choosing sobriety. If you're struggling with alcohol, find support at aa.com or The Luckiest Club. I'm home from Summer on the East Coast, ready to begin Second Summer in Southern California (find out what this means). I talk about my big blue birthday party on Broadway and the surprise visitors who flew across the country. In this episode I welcome new listeners I met (in-person) in Boone, North Carolina through Laura McKowen's weekend retreat at Art of Living Center. I answer questions, discuss Fall Wise Circle Enrollment, and share ideas related to this juicy thought by Brianna Wiest: “Your new life is going to cost you your old one. It's going to cost you your comfort zone and your sense of direction. It's going to cost you relationships and friends. It's going to cost you being liked and understood. It doesn't matter. The people who are meant for you are going to meet you on the other side. You're going to build a new comfort zone around the things that actually move you forward. Instead of being liked, you're going to be loved. Instead of being understood, you're going to be seen. All you're going to lose is what was built for a person you no longer are. Let it go.” You don't want to miss an appearance by Harvey Rose (from one of our play sessions) and my new friend, Dharamjeev. She reads a Mary Oliver poem, ‘At Blackwater Pond', live from Beech Forest, during our visit to Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Cheers. Salud. Skol. Wherever you are in the world, it seems like alcohol punctuates every celebration. But have we stopped to ask if alcohol is really good for us? Or have we paused to get curious about why we drink – and when it moves from genuine enjoyment to unhealthy numbing out? Recently, I've noticed more people having conversations about sobriety, from giving up drinking entirely to swapping a few cocktails for mocktails, and I thought it was time we talked about alcohol through the lens of The Adult Chair®. In this episode, I'm chatting with Laura McKowen, who has written extensively about getting sober and runs a global sobriety support community. She openly and vulnerably shares her story of using alcohol to numb her emotions, why and how she got sober and what her life looks like now. We talked about how our culture normalizes excessive drinking, all the emotions that come up when getting sober and ways to tell if you might have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. If you're at all “sober curious,” you're going to love hearing her perspective! Listen to discover: Laura's story of getting sober and why she chose to stop drinking How drinking culture normalizes excessive drinking Busting health myths about alcohol The connection between alcohol and anxiety How Laura's life got better when she got sober The way we use alcohol to numb our emotions How to develop a healthier relationship with alcohol, whether you choose to cut it out completely or enjoy it in moderation Like everything in The Adult Chair, we aren't talking in terms of “do” or “don't” or “good” or “bad,” but about bringing consciousness into the decisions we make. My goal for this show is not to tell you to stop drinking, but to encourage you to take a closer look at when you drink, why you drink and how you drink so you can truly live life to the fullest: present, awake and alive! "I knew I liked to drink a little too much. I loved it a little too much." - Laura McKowen [When offered a drink after a bad day] "I don't want a glass of wine. I would like to come talk to you about my emotions though." - Michelle Chalfant "We end up recreating our life in a way that decenters alcohol...my life is still my life." - Laura McKowen "When you are drinking even a little more than you want to, it keeps you from facing the truth." - Laura McKowen "Alcohol provides a really great shield to just sort of skim across the top of life." - Laura McKowen "I was in a lot of emotional pain. I know that's exactly why I reached for alcohol." - Michelle Chalfant "We don't get away with not feeling things. It goes somewhere." - Laura McKowen "Shame disconnects us from our humanity and the humanity in other people." - Laura McKowen "The not drinking wasn't the cure....it was actually connecting with other people in a meaningful way and healing in relationship with people that allowed me to heal." - Laura McKowen LINKS & RESOURCES Laura McKowen Website https://www.lauramckowen.com/ Laura McKowen Instagram https://www.instagram.com/laura_mckowen/ "Push Off From Here" (Laura McKowen Book) https://www.lauramckowen.com/books The Self-Worth Meditation Bundle https://theadultchair.com/worthy MORE ADULT CHAIR The Adult Chair® Website https://theadultchair.com The Adult Chair® Events https://theadultchair.com/events/ The Adult Chair® Coaching Certification https://theadultchair.com/certification STAY CONNECTED Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themichellechalfant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheMichelleChalfant/ The Adult Chair® Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theadultchair/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Michellechalfant

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Laura McKowen was saddened when her local AA chapter shut down. Inspired by her own journey of recovering from alcohol addiction, she has decided to start her own set of meetings. Joining Timothy J. Hayes, Psy.D, Laura shares how this simple idea grew into a proper community dedicated to achieving freedom from alcohol, which she has named The Luckiest Club. When Laura McKowen landed at her first AA meeting, she sobbed as she told strangers how she'd placed her daughter in danger one night. Afterward, a woman in the audience approached her. “I'm a mother too, and I want you to know, you can push off from here.”Push Off From Here became the title of Laura's second book, following her much-beloved 2020 memoir, We Are the Luckiest. Laura is a friend as well as an inspiration. In addition to her Substack LoveStory, she also runs an online community for folks who want to get ahold of their drinking, called The Luckiest Club.Laura and I talk about the false binary of “alcoholism,” why 12-step programs might be the biggest pain in the ass to ever save you, whether “love addiction” is a thing, and if substance abuse problems are better understood as a disease or a disorder, or neither But we talk about more than booze: Chasing boys and attention, body-image issues, quieting inner demons. Laura's book is fundamentally about change — how hard it is, but how worth the struggle. Her story is testimony to the quiet and profound choice of owning your own life. This is a public episode. In this episode I talk to bestselling author of We Are the Luckiest and founder of the international recovery community The Luckiest Club Laura McKowen about her new book Push off From Here. The stories and advice McKowen shares are specific to alcohol addiction, but the tenets are universal in their application and useful no matter what challenge you face. With profound honesty and boundless compassion, Push Off from Here provides an actionable framework for healing what pains us and proves that a life of sobriety can be synonymous with a life of magic, peace, and freedom. When Laura McKowen was two years sober, she received an email from a woman whose sister was struggling with alcohol addiction. McKowen had barely climbed out from the dark place the woman's sister was in, but she made a list of the things she most needed to hear when she was deep in her own battle. No matter how far astray you've gone or how many times you've tried and failed before, as long as you're still sitting here, breathing, and reading these words, freedom and joy are still possible. In this episode we explore her Nine Truths. 1. It is not your fault. 2. It is your responsibility. 3. It is unfair that this is your thing. 4. This is your thing. 5. This will never stop being your thing until you face it. 6. You cannot do it alone. 7. Only you can do it. 8. You are loved. 9. We will never stop reminding you of these things. In Push Off from Here, McKowen delves deeply into each of her nine points: what they mean, how they work, and how every person can live them. She addresses topics such as the correlation between trauma and addiction, the importance of radical honesty, letting go of the illusion of control, the value of community, a reminder that healing is a continual process, and that the process is a gift. Whether you're just starting out or have been sober for decades, McKowen instructs us to be kind to ourselves: Change is messy and progress is rarely linear, but we can always push off from here. It's a gem so grab a cuppa and let's chat. Love Kate x Buy the book: Connect with Laura at The Luckiest Club

Cheers. Salud. Listen to discover: ● Laura's story of getting sober and why she chose to stop drinking ● How drinking culture normalizes excessive drinking ● Busting health myths about alcohol ● The connection between alcohol and anxiety ● How Laura's life got better when she got sober ● The way we use alcohol to numb our emotions ● How to develop a healthier relationship with alcohol, whether you choose to cut it out completely or enjoy it in moderation Like everything in The Adult Chair, we aren't talking in terms of “do” or “don't” or “good” or “bad,” but about bringing consciousness into the decisions we make.

In this rendition of The Way Out I'm overjoyed to bring you my interview with person in long term recovery and life coach Hayley Scherders. Hayley shares her journey to and through recovery to this point with us with remarkable authenticity and in extremely relatable fashion, and all along the way she sprinkles practical recovery and spiritual wisdom that we can all apply to our own recovery. One of the most enlightening of which is the wonderfully powerful idea and concept of having 5 seconds of courage in order to ignite a seismic and positive shift in our lives, such as choosing to begin our journey of recovery, or starting therapy, or giving up a counterproductive thought and/or behavior pattern, or as Hayley so eloquently stated and herself experienced, deciding to turn our past into lessons instead of life sentences. Indeed, the smallest of beginnings can mushroom into meaningful, positive and sustained change, such as reading some quit-lit, going to a recovery meeting, or listening to a powerful recovery story like the one that's about to unfold before your very ears, so listen up. Episode 220 Today, we are talking about protecting your energy and paying attention to the resistance of low energy, so you stop pushing yourself to burnout. I heard about a concept from the comedian Whitney Cummings through Laura McKowen's podcast, Tell Me Something True. The concept is you have $100 daily to spend on your energy. You have thoughts, feelings, and activities, people who deposit money into your account, and thoughts, feelings, and people that withdraw and overdraw your account. In this episode, I will talk about activities that may help you gain energy and what drains your energy so you can start balancing your "energy account." I also talk about the energy drain that comes from drinking and hangovers in midlife and how I plan for low-energy days. Thank you for listening! Peace. Read this episode's full show notes here. Melissa Urban is one of the few people we've asked back to the show and there's a reason for that. She's got such a unique, magnetic energy and this strong, no-nonsense, yet compassionate way of showing up in the world. And now, she's written The Book of Boundaries: Set the Limits That Will Set You Free and, can we get a hell yes? We need this in our lives.Melissa walks us through why boundaries are one of the most important life skills one can have, common pitfalls, why she wrote a specific section for mother-in-laws, and so much more. Friends, we are not overstating it when we say it's hands-down the best book on boundaries EVER.Also, we have an announcement: we've decided to bring TMST to a close, and this episode will be our second to last. Laura will have a lot to say about what went into this decision next week, in her final solo episode. Tell the truth - how many times does the phrase “I'm so burned out?” show up around you?Burnout is both more than we think it is, and much more insidious. Burnout has been defined by the World Health Organization as a workplace-centered phenomenon, and they calculate that it's killing +750,000 people a year!Jennifer Moss has dedicated a large part of her career to researching, writing about, and educating people on burnout. She is going to get us on the same page so we can understand EXASCTLY what it is, how it's measured, and its real-world impacts. Jennifer is a journalist, former start-up founder, and brilliant thinker on how our workplaces and our society is failing us. Her book, The Burnout Epidemic, is an excellent deep dive into the topic and, like so many of us, she came to this topic through her own experience of burning out.Jennifer Moss' site: https://www.jennifer-moss.com/The Burnout Epidemic: https://www.jennifer-moss.com/booksIf you care about these kinds of conversations, we hope you'll become a TMST Plus member. Ali Shapiro arrives with a mountain of good news!We don't have to evade our relationship with food. We don't have to be ruled by stories that shame us and keep us stuck. Most importantly, those stories don't have to contribute to hating ourselves.Ali is the creator of the Truce with Food Program, which combines how we think - and feel about - food and the stories we tell ourselves. She's bridging psychology and behavioral change so we can break all the absurd, dangerous and shaming ways we approach food and our bodies. On TMST we've been open about our conflicted relationship with technology and social media. And you've heard many of our guests recount their mixed feelings, as well.Today's guest takes all of that and turns it up to 11.In 2018, Larissa May (who goes by Larz) spoke out about her struggle with depression on social media. The post and hashtag that emerged around it was called #HalfTheStory - and it sparked a global conversation about the relationship between technology and emotional wellbeing. Having just turned 28, Larz holds a unique place in our culture. She's a part of society that has had their adulthood defined by social media AND, she's also just about as old as you can be and still be able to talk to Gen Z as something like a peer. She's doing that through workshops, and creating screenless experiences, and nature immersions. Today, Larissa is asking us to consider what we get out of being the guinea pigs in Mark Zuckerberg's experiments in the metaverse. Or getting us to become aware of how prevalent the drug trade is on the social platforms - and how they're not doing a whole lot to crack down. She's is exactly the kind of person who we love to welcome to Tell Me Something True and we're excited for you to meet her today.Larissa's site: https://www.livinlikelarz.com/Larissa's IG: https://www.instagram.com/livinlikelarz/#HalfThe Story: https://www.instagram.com/halfthestory/If you care about these kinds of conversations, we hope you'll become a TMST Plus member. We don't like to admit it, but there are a hell of a lot of scripts that run us. They're the “shoulds” - ideas so woven into our lives that we don't even know they exist. For virtually all women - the scripts around motherhood are the most pernicious. They load us down with self-doubt, bake in unattainable expectations, and set us up for a life where we're always defined in relationship to others, our kids, or lack of kids.Erin Lane has spent most of her life challenging these scripts. Her latest book, “Someone Other Than a Mother” tears up the shaming social scripts that are bad for moms and non-moms alike. When we hear things like “Motherhood is the toughest job…” or "You don't know love until you become a mother" we're encountering the social scripting that defines what's “normal” for the majority of American women. This conversation with Erin is equal parts liberating and bracing. She's cracking something that we need to discuss in specific, urgent ways and we're thrilled to have her as our guest on Tell Me Something True.Resources:Erin's site: https://www.erinslane.com/Her book - Someone Other Than a MotherIf you care about these kinds of conversations, we hope you'll become a TMST Plus member. I like to ask all of my guests, “what's in your sobriety toolbox?,” but I really wish there was a better word than “toolbox”. “Toolboxes” are used on things that are broken. I am not broken and neither are you. Nevertheless, these are the tools that I rely on not just to cope, but to flourish in sobriety. These tools have lifted me up and given me nourishment, rest and focus. I hope you can find something here to add to your own sobriety toolbox! “Rachel Hollis is a manifestation of a larger ideology about women's place in society. That if you just try hard enough, all of these structural issues that are making your life really, really hard can be solved if you just wash your face. .” - Anne Helen PetersenAnne Helen Petersen is one of our most essential cultural observers. Her work at Buzzfeed culminated in her 2020 book, Can't Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation. She's an utterly captivating writer AND conversationalist. You may have first heard about Mary Laura Philpott through her first book, “I Miss You When I Blink.” Her new memoir in essays is “Bomb Shelter: Love, Time, and Other Explosives.” It was named an Editor's Choice by the New York Times Book Review and one of the Best Books of 2022 by NPR. “Bomb Shelter” had Laura laughing and crying and nodding her head as another woman (and mother) who is solidly in mid-life.There are almost no places left where contemporary authors can sit down and discuss their work. It's really important to me, and everyone, at TMST that we hold this space. If you care about these kinds of conversations, we hope you'll become a TMST Plus member. Being human means sometimes we feel deeply alone. Cut off from other people. For most people, it passes quickly. For others, especially those who also suffer from addiction, that feeling of isolation is persistent. It's a low hum that follows a person everywhere. Part of the reason why some drink is to numb that feeling and turn down the voices that whisper why we're alone.Chris Marshall knows these feelings well and he's here today to share how listening to those voices have almost killed him on several occasions. And how he's developed a support network to make them less loud. Chris learned how powerful the experience of connection can be and it, literally, helped to save his life. It led him to create Sans Bar, a community connection space that specializes in serving extravagantly amazing, zero alcohol cocktails. You may know Chris if you're a member of The Luckiest Club, the sobriety support community Laura founded where he's one of the meeting leaders.BONUS: Chris and Laura recorded some material just for TMST Plus members.
