Business and finance news from the Asia-Pacific. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda's hospitalization is generating uncertainty among investors over the central bank's messaging at its policy meeting next week, even as they remain convinced officials will raise interest rates. Ueda is expected to miss the BOJ's meeting on June 15-16 and will refrain from casting a vote, but will express his views via a statement. Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino will serve as acting chair while another deputy, Shinichi Uchida, will host a post-meeting press conference. Ueda's absence is unlikely to shift expectations of a hike, but uncertainty is growing among market participants about how clearly Uchida will communicate at the press conference. The BOJ's cautious approach to rate hikes has been weighing on the yen due to the large interest rate differential between the US and Japan. We speak to Winnie Hsu, Bloomberg's Asia Equities Reporter Plus - SpaceX has made history with the biggest-ever IPO, sending it into the top ranks of the largest public companies and putting founder Elon Musk on the verge of becoming the world's first trillionaire. The company raised $75 billion in the IPO, pricing 555.6 million shares at $135 each, according to a statement on its website Thursday. SpaceX's IPO is more than double the size of Saudi Aramco's $29.4 billion listing in 2019. Bloomberg TV hosts Haidi Stroud-Watts and Shery Ahn spoke to Jay Ritter, Warrington College of Business, The IPO Initiative Director & Emeritus Professor.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Asian losses followed a pullback on Wall Street, where the S&P 500 snapped a nine-day winning streak as renewed US-Iran clashes damped risk appetite. Some relief emerged early Thursday after the US announced a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, helping Brent crude halt a three-day rally. Also, a Tokyo inflation gauge eased to the slowest pace in more than a year as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's utility subsidies curbed household energy costs. We speak to Alice French, Bloomberg's Japan Stocks Reporter.. Plus - US and Iranian officials ended the latest round of nuclear talks in Geneva on Thursday by agreeing to reconvene as soon as next week, opening the door to further diplomacy even as President Donald Trump masses military forces in the region. With just days to go before Trump's deadline to reach an agreement, the two sides agreed to resume discussions at a technical level in Vienna. Oil pared gains given the prospect of more talks, though there was no public reaction from the US side, led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. A person familiar with the US position said the Americans were leaving Geneva disappointed with the progress of the talks. Axios reported earlier that Kushner and Witkoff were disappointed by what they heard from Iranian officials in their morning session. Eli Lilly is wrapping up 2025 with record-breaking weight loss in a late-stage trial for its triple hormone receptor agonist retatrutide. Results from the Phase III TRIUMPH-4 trial exceeded analyst expectations, leading BMO Capital markets to cleverly dub it “a true TRIUMPH.” Also in the weight loss arena, Zealand Pharma inked a deal with China's OTR Therapeutics worth up to $2.5 billion to collaborate on next-gen drugs for obesity and other metabolic diseases, and Rhythm Pharmaceuticals awaits a Dec. 20 FDA verdict for Imcivree in hypothalamic obesity.   Turning to the FDA, reports broke late last week that the agency was considering slapping a black box label—its strictest warning—on COVID-19 vaccines. Commissioner Marty Makary denied those reports on Monday, stating on Bloomberg TV that the FDA has “no plans” to make such a move. This follows an internal memo from Vinay Prasad leaked over Thanksgiving in which the CBER director claimed that “at least” 10 children have died “because of” COVID-19 vaccines. An internal safety review published last week refuted this conclusion, instead concluding that between zero and seven deaths could be linked to the shots.   Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, for one, is tired of the recent rhetoric from HHS on vaccines and hopes they are “an anomaly” that will be corrected soon. With strong words about the administration's sentiment on vaccines, Bourla prominsed Pfizer's continued investment in vaccines despite declining revenue. Pfizer this week lowered its 2026 guidance to $62.5 billion in revenue, missing analyst consensus.  The FDA has also granted several approvals in the past week, to Amgen, Milestone Pharmaceuticals and AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo. USAntibiotics also snagged a greenlight, for Augmentin XR, the first approval to be given under the agency's new Commissioner's National Priority Voucher (CNPV) program. Also this week, Johnson & Johnson scored a CNPV ticket—without even having to apply—for its investigational combo of Tecvayli plus Darzalex for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma after the FDA was impressed by Phase III data.   In ClinicaSpace this week, we highlighted 5 of 2025's Defining Clinical Wins and The 5 Most Painful Clinical Trial Failures of 2025. This past week provided a few more on each front. In the winner's circle, Immunome's desmoid tumor drug and and Kyverna's CAR T for stiff person syndrome both aced pivotal trials, while Sanofi's MS drug tolebrutinib and Gilead and Arcus' TIGIT therapy domvanalimab each failed Phase III tests.   And in BioPharm Executive, we highlight 6 Biotechs That Could Be Big Pharma's Next M&A Target, and more M&A predictions for 2026.

On today's podcast:1) President Trump sat down with CBS' 60 Minutes - as heard on Bloomberg Radio - for a long-ranging discussion on the government shutdown, tariffs, and border security. Trump says immigration raids “haven’t gone far enough” despite videos showing physical confrontations among federal agents, immigrants and protesters. Trump also said that he could use the Insurrection Act to use professional military, instead of the National Guard, to US cities “if I wanted to.” The president’s comments come after his administration expanded a federal program that deputizes local police to enforce immigration laws, signing up nearly 16,000 officers across 40 states as part of an effort to boost deportations, according to data reviewed by Bloomberg News. 2) President Trump said he would skip attending the Supreme Court hearing this week over the legality of his worldwide tariffs regime. The court is scheduled on Wednesday to hear Trump’s appeal of a lower court’s ruling that many of his “Liberation Day” tariffs exceeded the president’s emergency power to regulate imports. Trump had said he felt an “obligation” to watch in person as the Supreme Court weighed his power to impose tariffs. If he had attended, he would have been the first sitting president in US history to attend oral arguments at the high court.3) The summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Trump was a breakthrough in bilateral relationship where the Asian giant was treated as an “equal partner” of the US, according to David Daokui Li, a regular policy adviser to Beijing. Speaking to Bloomberg TV on Monday, Li described a sense of enthusiasm among his peers in Beijing following the leaders’ meeting in South Korea last week. The exchange led to a one-year trade truce, although it didn’t address core differences between the world’s two largest economies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Next week, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit will be underway. President Trump is expected to meet with South Korea President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping for separate bilateral talks that may shape trade relations for years to come. In the states, senior South Korean officials visited Washington today to resume trade negotiations to bridge their differences over Seoul's $350 billion investment pledge under a bilateral trade deal struck in July. For more on what's ahead at the APEC Summit, we heard from Kang Kyung-hwa, South Korean Ambassador to the United States. She spoke to Bloomberg's Joe Mathieu and Julie Fine on Balance of Power. And - South Korea and the US are focusing on the structure of a $350 billion investment pledge by Seoul, rather than a currency swap, according to Finance Minister Koo Yun Cheol. Officials in Washington including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent now see the potential for a shock to Seoul's foreign-exchange market from an "upfront" deployment of funds, Koo told Bloomberg TV in an interview on Wednesday that also touched on weakness in the Korean won stemming from the unfinished deal, car tariffs and AI technology. He spoke exclusively with Bloomberg's Shery Ahn about the progress of talks, on the sidelines of the APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting in Incheon, South Korea.
