Happy Tuesday, everyone! Happy Holidays! A quick note that I'm taking a wee break for the holidays, but am excited to resume with more incredible guests and chats in 2020. Until then, this week I sat down with Emmy nominated filmmaker Xan Aranda. She's a producer/showrunner/director/writer who has been described as a unicorn: a producer with both the logistical and creative brain. We've been circling each other a quite some time, so this meeting was a few years in the making. And let me tell you…it was worth the wait. Her resume is varied and impressive. Most recently, she was the EP on season 1 of HBO’s Room 104 alongside the Duplass Brothers, two of my indie heroes. In many ways, she’s been a producer for over 25 years. She’s spent her 20s and 30s working non-stop, and now finally fresh into her 40s, she’s slowing down a bit. On her terms…which for most producers usually means simply being able to eat lunch in silence. This hour is filled with gems and inspirational anecdotes. We discuss the importance of associate producers, how she's taking part in paradigm shift post #MeToo, and what real wealth means in Hollywood. Enjoy! Beijos, Caca

Once upon a time, there was a girl who grew up to be the most successful boxer in India’s history. Her name was Mary Kom. Mary was an energetic child who was naturally drawn towards sports. So she enrolled herself in a sports academy where she discovered her love of boxing, but her trainers thought she was too small. Still, Mary sparred until she improved her technique, showing up early and staying late to train. She was terrified her parents would stop her, but they eventually grew to be her biggest supporters. With her nation and family’s support, Mary boxed her way to the Olympic Games and inspired generations to come.Sponsored by:www.rebelgirls.co Use promocode REBELPODCAST to get 15% off your first purchase!About the Narrator:Poorna Jagannathan is an award-winning actress and producer. Writer/Director/Actor/Producer Mark Duplass, along with his brother Jay, has managed to jump the gap from indie darling to major Hollywood player, creating series like HBO's Room 104 and Togetherness as well as a massive slate of indie films, studio films and even documentaries like the wildly successful Wild, Wild Country for Netflix. As of May 8th, Mark and Jay can now add "Author" to their long list of talents as Random House published their memoir, Like Brothers, everywhere books are sold. Mark and I get down and dirty about collaborating with your brother without killing him, circumnavigating the Hollywood system, overcoming a lack of resources to create a mini-studio and betting on yourself. Once upon a time, there was an inventor and entrepreneur named Madam C.J. Walker. She was the child of slaves, the first in her family to be born free, thanks to the Emancipation Proclamation. As a child, she had to work in the cotton fields to help support her family. Later, as a teenaged orphan, she became a washerwoman, backbreaking work considered one of the worst and most difficult jobs a woman could have. But she dreamed of more -- for herself and her daughter. When, due to an illness, her hair began to fall out, she created a hair care regimen specifically for African-American women. It worked! She crisscrossed the country going door to door to sell her products and eventually built a beauty empire with sales representatives in every state. The formula grew to be so popular she became the first self-made female millionaire in America, and her products are still for sale today.Sponsored by:www.rebelgirls.co Use promocode REBELPODCAST to get 15% off your first purchase!Poorna Jagannathan is an actress and the producer of "Nirbhaya" ('Fearless'), the critically-acclaimed play written and directed by Yael Farber. Once, there was a girl who put a man on the Moon. Her name was Margaret Hamilton. When she was young, girls didn't study computers. But Margaret was curious about space, and she was smart. Really smart. She never thought twice about being the only woman in the room. With her cool-headedness and brilliant programming skills, she was able to avert disaster and maneuver the first successful American moon landing, Apollo 11.Sponsored by:www.rebelgirls.co Use promocode REBELPODCAST to get 15% off your first purchase!Poorna Jagannathan is an actress and the producer of "Nirbhaya" ('Fearless'), the critically-acclaimed play written and directed by Yael Farber. HBO, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, Oscar Nominated Director Whit Stillman, Cannes Directorial Winner Matt Ross, The Duplass Brothers, Chris Messina... these are just a few of Doug's esteemed collaborators. To most Cinematographers over the age of 40 being honest about their feelings, 33 year old Doug Emmett's prolific career would be the source of much envy and jealousy. But to sit down with Doug to talk shop and hear about his journey to his current place in the world of Film & TV, is to love him. Articulate and humble, Doug was uneasy about being interviewed for a podcast called 10,000 "No" s, as he feels like he's lived a charmed life. But, as with anyone in any field, Doug's path to success has been paved with patience, a willingness to fail, a lot of hard work and the ability to overcome the challenges that can sometimes be presented by prickly actors or a sunset that refuses to wait for a particular film or TV show to "get the shot". Doug's journey began early, when at the ripe age of 7, his mother offered to get him and SLR film camera if he took on extra chores to help out his father, who had just suffered a hernia. That led to a mother/son mentorship, where she taught him about lenses and F-stops, and inspired him to go out and shoot videos of neighborhood kids with his brother. A great teacher encouraged him to start a TV show in HS on a local access channel which eventually led him to NYU Film School. But through all of the learning and the success, Doug's mantra has been to serve the story, serve the project and serve the director... which, as of late, sometimes means himself: see his directorial debut of the episode titled The Internet in Season 1 of HBO's Room 104. 10,000 "No" s is available for streaming or download in the podcast section of iTunes (search Matthew Del Negro and then "subscribe" to 10,000 "No" s with Matthew Del Negro), or at: http://tenthousandnos.libsyn.com/website
Natalie and Maren are getting sweaty & giggly this week as they finally chat with the lovely Wilson Cruz! They discuss Wilson's exciting new projects, reminisce over My So-Called Life (Rickie and Rayanne = Friends 4ever!), and put an end to the 13 Reasons Why “Vasquez” conspiracy. And this week in fangirling: HBO's Room 104, Amazon Prime killing it with OG content, and Master of None's second season may be the best thing on television this year. *** Brought to you by TV Time: http://bit.ly/2rxbrSz Fangirl Merch: https://fangirlfridayspodcast.threadless.com/ Instagram: @fangirlfridayspodcast Facebook: @fangirlfridayspodcast Twitter: @fgfpodcast
