Let's take a moment to explore the powerful and often overlooked history of women and money in America. This journey has been marked by bold shifts, surprising setbacks, and undeniable progress. The path has been anything but linear from the 1862 Homestead Act to women now leading Fortune 500 companies. This isn't just a look back; it's a reminder that your wealth-building journey is part of something bigger. When we understand the laws that shaped us, like the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974, and celebrate pioneers like Madam C.J. Walker, we begin to see that financial independence isn't just about money. It's about power, legacy, and rewriting the future. Why does this matter now? I believe every woman deserves the financial power to walk away from any job or relationship that isn't serving her. This episode is a reminder that we're not just chasing wealth, we're building freedom. Let's keep learning, investing, valuing ourselves, and enjoying the journey together. 01:15 – Before 1974: Needing a man's permission to open a bank account 04:30 – The Homestead Act and the start of women's property rights 06:15 – Madam CJ Walker's legacy of empowerment 07:45 – The 19th Amendment and why voting is part of wealth-building 10:00 – The Equal Pay Act: Progress and reality 12:45 – Janet Yellen and the rise of women in economic leadership 14:00 – From one female CEO in 1972 to over 50 today
Rags-to-riches entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker and her daughter, A'Lelia Walker, built one of the most successful African American hair care businesses in American history. But it was only after A'Lelia broke free of her mother's singular vision that she found her calling in 1920s Harlem. That search for independence and purpose is at the center of A'Lelia Bundles' new book, “Joy Goddess: A'Lelia Walker and the Harlem Renaissance.” It's our May selection for Bookmarked: the “Under the Radar” book club.
Melissa Davey took the adage about it's never too late to try something new quite seriously. This wasn't about jumping out of an airplane kind of stuff. In her sixties, she retired from a lengthy corporate career to pursue her second act and dream of becoming a filmmaker. I always tell teens I coach or meet who are stressed about picking a college major and choosing a career path, that the average American changes careers, not just jobs, seven times in their lifetimes. You never know when circumstances allow you to drop the grind and forge a new direction, like you heard Australian Maddy Reynolds do in a WASP episode a few weeks ago when she dumped the corporate world to become a pro trail runner. Melissa was the Vice President of Social Security and Managed Disability at GENEX for 22 years, sat on the company's executive team, and worked throughout the United States to create and deliver services to the disability insurance marketplace. But after a day on the set with famed screenwriter and filmmaker M Night Shyamalan, she decided to take a risk and left her career to jump into the unknown. Pursuing her dream of becoming a filmmaker became a reality in late 2018 when Melissa completed her first feature film, Beyond Sixty, which highlights stories of women making similar jumps, including the woman behind the original voice of Siri, the Madam CJ Walker biographer, and the sculptor of Lady Gaga's Fame perfume carriage. During 2019, Melissa's film was accepted by and screened at eight film festivals throughout the United States and Canada, winning awards and confirming that it is never too late to learn something new. Picked up by a distributor and released in 2021, the film is currently available on most streaming platforms. Melissa's second film, Climbing into Life, details the inspiring life story of Dierdre Wolownick, the oldest woman to ascend El Capitan, who also happens to be the mother of famed free solo climber Alex Honnold. The film is currently making the film festival rounds. Melissa is a champion to show that it isn't too late for people over 60, particularly women to explore new pathways and make a profound impact on the world. It's such a great message to share, and she does it with an infectious energy as you'll find out in this episode.Melissa Daveymelissadavey.combeyondsixty.commelissa@melissadavey.comFacebook Beyond Sixty DocumentaryInstagram @beyond60project and @climbing_into_lifeBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman Newsletter!https://mailchi.mp/dab62cfc01f8/newsletter-signup

Yvette has a lively conversation with A'Lelia Bundles, the great-great-granddaughter of trailblazing entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker. Madam C.J. Walker is often referred to as one of the first self-made African American millionaires. But what is most important is the legacy that Madam C.J. A'Lelia Bundles, an award-winning journalist and author, has been at the forefront of documenting the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker. Her book On Her Own Ground served as the inspiration of the Netflix series Self Made about Madam C.J. Walker's life.

On this day, Dec. 23, in 1867, Madam C. J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, entered the world on a plantation in Delta, Louisiana, to formerly enslaved parents. Walker left, the generational wealth she created, the women she empowered and the causes she was involved in. A'Lelia Bundles, an award-winning journalist and author, has been at the forefront of documenting the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker. Her book On Her Own Ground served as the inspiration of the Netflix series Self Made about Madam C.J. Walker's life.
It's Black History Month, and thus the perfect reason for Sara and Chloe take a stroll through all of the incredible Black Broads we have learned about since the beginning of this pod! We (briefly) revisit each Black Broad, from our very first, Madam CJ Walker, through activists who built the civil rights movement like Ella Jo Baker and Mary McLeod Bethune, to babes that won the west, like Stagecoach Mary, inventors like Sarah Goode, heroes like Chief Theresa Kachindamoto, and some of the greatest poets and feminists of our time, like Audre Lorde. If you're looking to increase the breadth of your Black Broads History, this is a great episode to dip your toes into and discover the stories that pique your interest most; the stories of the women whose voices have been the most ignored and silenced by the white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy: black women. — A Broad is a woman who lives by her own rules. The cards were stacked against Sarah Breedlove from the start. Born in 1867 to formerly enslaved parents and growing up along the cotton fields of the deep south during the Reconstruction Era. She was orphaned at 7, married at 14 and widowed at 20, leaving her utterly alone in the world with a small child to raise. But Sarah had learned from an early age to be her own advocate and her own savior. Dragging herself up from the dredges of poverty to become one of the wealthiest business owners in America. In turn she would set out to use her wealth and influence to better the lives of black citizens, specifically black women and girls across the nation.
Another way of saying “personal power” is... “we can do hard things!” Not all things are easy or hard for everyone. What may be easy for you, because of your circumstances, may be hard for me because of mine… and vice versa. * Often we get too caught up in noticing other people's circumstantial power, ignore their personal efforts, and do the opposite with ourselves… by focusing on our “lack” of circumstantial power and not being aware of our personal power. * When we get hold of our personal power, we become an example for all others like us (like us?). This is SO freaking important! * So the more women who harness their personal power, it'll be like a bunch of lit torches being lit EVERYWHERE and the more torches lit the more light there will be for all of us! * Think about it!! My light/torch won't be for every woman, and neither will yours…. But each of our lights will be for someone. It will be the right brightness, proximity, at the right place, at the right moment in someone's life… * So how do we harness our personal power? By redefining/thinking intentionally and on purpose about what we truly desire, and by changing the beliefs that brought us here. We have the ability to think and plan, in order to overcome what didn't/doesn't come easy to us. * What are some things you don't have to overcome?? * We can combine both our circumstantial and personal powers… where we can create “recipes” if you will, by choosing to use what we've been given with what we can CREATE on our own. * And if you feel you have NO circumstantial power, then by using only your personal power the fruits of your labors will be that much sweeter, and INSPIRATIONAL! Madam C.J. Walker was a brilliant entrepreneur who built a haircare empire and became the first African American woman millionaire. You might have heard about her, but not many people know that her headquarters used to be located in Indianapolis, along a once vibrant Black corridor called Indiana Avenue, a place that today is known for parking lots, high-speed traffic, and uninspiring university buildings. Why do so few people know this story? Because, over decades, government planners and private developers slowly and systematically erased Indiana Avenue's history. Luckily, however, some Black Hoosiers are working to uncover — and reclaim — what almost disappeared without a trace. In this episode we tell their — and the Avenue's — story. Guests We talk with some incredibly distinguished Black Indianapolis experts: journalist and Madam C.J. Walker biographer (and descendent) A'Lelia Bundles; Susan Hall Dotson of the Indiana Historical Society; Claudia Polley of the Urban Legacy Lands Initiative; Wildstyle Paschall, an artist and community advocate; Devon Ginn of the Walker Legacy Center; and centenarian/Indiana Avenue author, Mr. Thomas Hart Ridley. We also reference the research of Dr. Olon Dotson of Ball State University. You can find the aerial photographs we mention in the episode here: https://maps.indy.gov/MapIndy/ Sponsors This episode, the first of a two-part series on Black Indianapolis, was made possible by a grant from Indiana Humanities. This episode is so deliciously wonderful. We had the honor to sit down and speak with A'Lelia Bundles, the great-great-granddaughter of Madam CJ Walker. This episode is all about resiliency and intergenerational wisdom. A'Lelia generously shares what she learned about her lineage as she was writing her great-great-grandmother's biography. We explore how a woman who was the very first person in her family born outside of slavery was able to navigate a society they didn't value her and go on to become the first self-made millionaire woman in the United States. For more information on A'Lelia's work, visit: https://aleliabundles.com/.For more information on Luis' work, visit: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/
Three of my colleagues and I explore the life and accomplishments of Madam C.J. Walker - what the climate was like for dark-skinned Black women in the early 1900s, and all the obstacles she had the audacity to face. She didn't just pave the way for women then, she is still a shining example of getting comfortable with other people's discomfort, trusting yourself, and what it means to be a wealthy woman in America.
