This week on BEHIND THE LENS we take a look at two films and three directors, each making their feature directorial debut. SOPHIA CASTUERA brings us the "mumblecore" narrative AUGUST AT TWENTY-TWO while GARY MATOSO and CAMERON ZOHOORI take us behind the lines of volunteer firefighting in the United States with ODD HOURS, NO PAY, COOL HAT. First up is SOPHIA CASTUERA talking about her debut narrative feature – AUGUST AT TWENTY-TWO. A wannabe actress fresh out of school trying to make it in the Big Apple and filled with all the confusion and trouble that comes with being 22 from floundering in a career, making bad decisions, pushing away a BFF, jealousy, partying versus work, etc. Very much in the vein of the Duplass Brothers early "mumblecore" films, not to mention being very female-centric in front of and behind the camera, Sophia discusses the challenges and the joys of directing not just this film, but a feature film at that. Then things get hot when directors GARY MATOSO and CAMERON ZOHOORI join us live discussing their new documentary ODD HOURS, NO PAY, COOL HAT. An insightful and intimate look behind the lines of volunteer firefighting in the United States, Gary and Cameron hone in on this diverse community of firefighting brethren across the country meeting select volunteer fire companies and their members and getting "up close and personal" with these brave dedicated men and women. It may come as a shock to many that we have such a large number of volunteer firefighting companies in this country, but these firefighters are essential to the fabric of first responders, especially in more rural or very small communities without a municipal budget to sustain a career firefighter company. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Michael Tennant grew up San Diego with a “disdain” for Los Angeles. “You're taught the Dodgers are the devil,” he jokes. “LA is the worst. Don't do this. But my brother did a play, I heard him get a laugh and that first hit of dopamine, I started chasing that. I liked the idea of performing.” In the early days, Tennant wanted to become an actor. “Good Will Hunting was a seminal movie,” he says. “These two guys just got together and wrote something? And Gus Van Sant is directing it? How did these guys do that?” Tennant says he somewhat lost track of that and focused on acting. “I got stuck in the linear idea of it for a while, but then I fell into producing.” While on set one day, a producer had lunch with Tennant and this somewhat led to work in development. “I saw the sausage getting made and it made me kind of sad.” Tennant adds, “I was watching people set money on fire, never their own but other people's money, making movies for the wrong reasons and after a few years reading thousands of scripts, I thought I wanted to give writing a crack. Let me see if can do this.” Inspired originally by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and more recently by the Duplass Brothers (see the speech, “The Calvary Isn't Coming”), Tennant knew he needed to take his shot. “I keep asking other people — writers, directors, casting agents — to hand me this creative life that I want and no one is doing it. Why is no one doing it? Because you have to do it yourself.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. Today, you'll be hearing from the independent film industry's favorite duo, The Duplass Brothers. Mark and Jay Duplass are known for their generosity, creativity, and transparency. Two undercover agents who successfully infiltrated a notoriously cutthroat and self-centered industry, Hollywood. Together, they broke into the business via a seven-minute short film they shot on their parents' video camera, with a total production budget of $3 — the cost of the blank tape they purchased to shoot it. Erik, Mark, and Jay discuss allowing your work to speak for itself, embracing limits and constraints, inspiration waiting at the bus stop, the value of keeping a lot of irons in the fire and hiring for personality over experience.   You may know Mark and Jay through their acting careers. The lists are long but Mark currently stars on Apple TV's The Morning Show as Charlie Black. Whether producing, writing, directing, or acting, the Duplass Brothers have made their mark in the world of independent film and television on the strength of their quirky and empathetic approach to storytelling. Now, for the first time, Mark and Jay take readers on a tour of their lifelong personal and professional partnership in LIKE BROTHERS, a unique memoir told in essays that share the secrets of their success, the joys and frustrations of intimate collaboration, and the lessons they've learned the hard way.Part coming-of-age memoir, part underdog story, and part insider account of succeeding in Hollywood on their own terms, LIKE BROTHERS, is also a surprisingly practical roadmap to a rewarding creative partnership. From a childhood spent wielding an oversized home video camera in the suburbs of New Orleans to their shared years at the University of Texas in early ‘90s Austin, and from the breakthrough short they made on a $3 budget to the night their feature film Baghead became the center of a Sundance bidding war, Mark and Jay tell the story of a bond that's resilient, affectionate, mutually empowering, and only mildly dysfunctional. They are brutally honest about how their closeness sabotaged their youthful romantic relationships, about the jealousy each felt when the other stole the spotlight as an actor (Mark in The League, Jay in Transparent), and about the challenges they faced on the set of their beloved HBO series, Togetherness—namely, too much togetherness. From their obsession with people-watching at airports to their always-evolving “top 10 films of all-time” list to their personal email conversations to their defense of Air Supply, LIKE BROTHERS is as openhearted and lovably offbeat as Mark and Jay themselves.I highly recommend any and all filmmakers and screenwriters read this book. Rewinding back to just a decade ago that seems unfathomable today where little indie pictures could still populate several hundred screens during their release, Mike introduces Dino to one of the more contemporary offerings in our canon in I Eat Movies #28: Dino's First Time - Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011). Starring Jason Segel (TV's How I Met Your Mother) as a grieving stoner searching for a purpose in the signs that surround us everyday, this Duplass Brothers production finds Segel on a journey that finds him reconnecting with his estranged brother (Ed Helms, The Office) as they try to determine whether or not his wife is cheating on him. Along the way, their mother (played by the legendary Susan Sarandon, Thelma & Louise) is also longing for a connection not experienced since her husband passed away that will somehow lead this fractured family down a path they never could imagine. Will Mike's own emotional reaction to this charming little picture be enough to sway Dino? Find out in I Eat Movies #28: Dino's First Time - Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011).

She was asked by friend Lloyd Morrisett, who worked for the Carnegie Corporation of New York and who specialized in the psychological studies of pre-school children, to take on revolutionary experiment. Could Joan create a children's show that would "master the addictive qualities of television and do something good with them?"Inspired by the civil rights movement, Joan and Lloyd took this experiment one step further and began to envision using the new medium of television to educate all children, and specifically reach America's "inner city" children to help close the educational gap that systemic racism and poverty had created. It was the right project, at the right time, and she needed the right group of people to make it happen. To harness the burgeoning power of television and create an educational, impactful, and entertaining show that could reach children nationwide. Cooney recruited visionary Muppets creator Jim Henson and acclaimed children's television writer and director Jon Stone to craft the iconic and uplifting world of what became Sesame Street.Street Gang: How We Got To Sesame Street focuses on the first two experimental and groundbreaking decades of Sesame Street, highlighting this visionary "gang."With interviews with the original surviving creators, and their families, we hear and see how “the gang” came together. They share stories of the challenges and stumbling blocks involved to create the show and its iconic characters, and also speak to confronting boundaries that came their way with unflinching purpose. Just look at the size of that cast! The range of subjects! The Overnight works because of the cast. I've crushed on Adam Scott for ages, and he's the perfect straight man here -– the main reason this even works. Ditto for Jason Schwartzman. Taylor Schilling and Judith Godrèche are also amazing. The Duplass Brothers produced this movie, and they're also big in the mumblecore movement. The Amazon TV series Transparent is a touching tragicomedy about a trio of LA-based siblings who struggle with sex, love and relationships, while supporting their father coming out as trans. It features a Southern-born, super-capable woman with childhood trauma and a grumpy arborist hero who identifies as pansexual. He's been in love with a man in his past, and now he loves her. I love romances that bring the emotional baggage, as well as sex positivity, to relationship. It makes the story richer, deeper, and more compelling.

Jas Shelton's career has spanned nearly every genre, from comedy to horror and suspense. Jas grew up in East Texas and attended the University of Texas in Austin. He had difficulty getting into the film program, so he started shooting music videos for bands, then began shooting student films. Austin was a hub for fairly large films at the time, where Jas found work as a gaffer or on second unit, including Miss Congeniality, Varsity Blues, and The Ladykillers. When he and director Kyle Alvarez began planning for the second season of Homecoming on Amazon, they chose to use a different color palette from season one, with darker, moodier looks for the flashback sequences vs. the present day. They were influenced by the look of 70's movies and Brian DePalma films, with slow push-in zooms on the characters, several split-screen sequences and off-center framing. Jas shot all seven episodes of the series, and has received an Emmy nomination for his work. Jas had also worked with Kyle Alvarez on The Stanford Prison Experiment, which was another challenging project since most of it was shot on a white laboratory set, but careful use of close-ups and shadow helped bring more depth to the film. Jas's tight camerawork and careful planning for Homecoming was a much different approach from Jas's previous work with the Duplass brothers on the series Togetherness, The Do-Deca-Pentathalon and Cyrus. Mark and Jay Duplass favor a rough, homemade, documentary style, with lots of improvisation, so scenes often began with close ups on long lenses, with wider shots at the end. For the film Keanu, Jas's experience with more improvisational filmmaking was useful, since Jordan Peele would often rewrite scenes right before shooting.
