This twisted tale of love and death begins and ends with Ray, an ordinary man who runs an ordinary business in the fictional town of LaRoy, Texas. He longs for his wife Stacy-Lynn's affections, but Ray discovers that his wife is cheating on him and decides to end his life in a motel parking lot. Just before taking action, a stranger breaks into his car, thinking he is dealing with the killer he hired. Disconcerted by this misunderstanding, Ray ends up accepting the mission, convinced that people will finally respect him. The plan had to be simple. But very quickly Ray finds himself caught in a spiral from which he will have to get out before it is too late… LaRoy, Texas is a complex plot involving love triangles real and fake, blackmail, counter-blackmail and manslaughter duly unfolds around inadvertent detective duo Ray and Skip, who will have to solve the mystery at the heart of their community. LAROY is at once a film about friendships forged from fragile masculinity and a dark Western that probes the aftermath of the financial crisis in the US. Director and writer Shane Atkinson joins us for a conversation on his film's blend of modern film noir, macabre humor and assembling a terrific cast that includes John Magaro, Steve Zahn, Galadriel Stineman, Dylan Baker, and Matthew Del Negro. Matthew Del Negro is a celebrated actor credited for roles in some of TV's most-renowned and award-winning shows such as SOPRANOS, SCANDAL, Goliath & WEST WING, and films HOT PURSUIT and WIND RIVER. He appears in all three seasons of Showtime's City on a Hill opposite Kevin Bacon as Detective Caysen. In this episode with me he referenced talking with Kevin Bacon on set the day before, and I was admittedly honored he chose to spend time with me, a little bit lesser known Kevin. I had him on the show of course to talk about what drives him. Matt said being a professional actor is a career of being told no for a living, and three years ago he decided to give voice to this journey of overcoming rejection by starting a podcast called 10,000 NOs. From the success of that podcast he was offered a book deal and his book is also titled, 10,000 NOs. That's why he's here. I was intrigued by his personal story of starting out as the peacekeeper in his family, being shattered by a breakup with his girlfriend and finally finding himself and taking up acting later in life. What were his motives? What drove him, good and bad? As you'll hear, we really resonated as we got to the heart of...motives and drive. You can find Matt's book 10,000 NOs on Amazon and find him on any podcast player at 10,000 NOs and you can see him in City on a Hill, on Showtime. Matthew Del Negro believes that we learn more about ourselves in our losses than in our victories.  He is a hugely successful actor– with major roles on the Sopranos, West Wing, Scandal, and currently starring on Showtime's City on a Hill with Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge.  Despite his long list of impressive acting credits, Matt has discovered more about his true self by overcoming the “10,000 No's” that he has been dealt throughout his career.  While some actors might prefer to keep up the facade of a perfect life and career, Matt chose to get real by starting his podcast, 10,000 No's. He interviews his guests –many of whom are also successful actors, including Lorraine Bracco and Kevin Bacon– about their own experiences with rejection and the fear of not being able to find the next great role.  Matt recognized that sharing these experiences and wisdom would help other young actors, and he quickly realized that the idea of turning a No into a Yes could be helpful to anyone–  not just actors.   Matt talks about the importance of being bold enough to take a risk and believe you will succeed.  And we talk about not caring what other people think of us when we decide to enter the arena.  Episode Links and Resources:  10,000 Nos Podcast, Book and Insider's CommunityOrder 10,000 NOs: How to Overcome Rejection on the Way to Your YESMatthew Del Negro IMDb BioShowtime's City on a HillFull Text of “Citizenship in a Republic” (a/k/a “Man in the Arena”)  Speech by Theodore RooseveltMatthew Del Negro InstagramSupport this podcast by subscribing and reviewing!Music is considered “royalty-free” and discovered on Audio Blocks.Technical Podcast Support by: Jon Keur at Wayfare Recording Co.© 2022 Silver Linings Media LLC. As I quoted at the top of the show, Matt said being a professional actor is a career of being told no for a living, and three years ago he decided to give voice to this journey of overcoming rejection by starting a podcast called 10,000 NOs. From the success of that podcast he was offered a book deal and just came out with it, titled also, 10,000 NOs. That’s why he’s here. I was intrigued by his personal story of starting out as the peacekeeper in his family, being shattered by a breakup with his girlfriend and finally finding himself and taking up acting later in life. What were his motives? What drove him, good and bad? As you’ll hear, we really resonated as we got to the heart of...motives. You can connect with Matt at 10000nos.com/ and he said to please check out Season 2 City On A Hill, on Showtime. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

My guest on this Hometown to Hollywood podcast episode is actor, podcast creator and author Matthew Del Negro. Mathew’s success has been well-earned and slow-burning. He began doing small theatre productions in New York before landing a pivotal role in Season 4 of The Sopranos. Since then his career has spanned theatre, film, and TV, and he is best known for his roles in Goliath, Huge in France, Wind River, Scandal, The West Wing, When We Rise, Hot Pursuit, Teen Wolf, and many more. In 2017, after describing his career as "being told 'No' for a living" when speaking to near-graduates of MFA Theater Programs in Los Angeles, Matthew created and launched his podcast, 10,000 Nos, which can be listened to on the Apple Podcasts App, Spotify and at 10000nos.com. On it, Matthew gets up close and personal with successful people from all walks of life about the 10,000 "No"s they've had to endure and the struggles they've had to overcome on their journey to where they are today. We cover some inspiring territory, including how heartbreak led to an epiphany that started his journey as an actor, what he did to break into the business, advice for auditions and perseverance, and some very powerful mindset advice for success in life as well as in acting. Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation: ·      “It started with a bold proclamation, and commitment.” ·      “Take action now, course correct later.” ·      “If you go in trying to figure out what they want & doing that—even if you get the job—that whole job ends up being miserable, because you never own the character.” ·      “Whenever I’ve been at my best, it’s when I’ve felt, ‘this is my take on the role, & you may like it or not like it, but this is what I’m going to do.’” ·      “It’s not so easy when you have nerves, & you’re in the waiting room & others are sitting there and posturing and getting in your head.” ·      “You need to love the actual work.” ·      “Nobody from my world became an actor.” ·      “My dad would always say, ‘failure is opportunity in disguise.’” ·      “We have to be careful of who we choose to be around, so what we’re getting is lifting us & not crushing us.” ·      “Find your people. Find the people whose values align with you. The people that GET you.” ·      “Find the people who are going to empower you, & challenge you, & inspire you, & introduce you to things you might not have seen before.” ·      “If you are listening to this podcast, you’re doing something right. Bonnie is like a guardian angel.”   Follow Matthew Del Negro HERE: Podcast:          https://www.10000nos.com Website:         https://www.matthewdelnegro.com Instagram:     @mattydel Twitter:          @matthewdelnegro Get his book, 10,000 NOs HERE   Matthew Del Negro spent years in the trenches like so many actors do, learning lessons about how to succeed the hard way. And while none of us escape some time in the trenches-- and there are no shortcuts-- there ARE some ways to soften the learning curve and save some time and money figuring everything out on your own. Matthew is an actor (Sopranos, City on a Hill, The West Wing, Scandal, Huge In France, Law & Order, and many more ), a podcast host, and now an author. His new book, 10,000 NOs: How to Overcome Rejection on the Way to Your YES, chronicles Matthew Del Negro's tough journey from humble beginnings, through a sea of rejections, on the way to his eventual rise to become a recognizable face on some of history's most acclaimed television shows. Along the way, he learned hard lessons about perseverance, persistence, and resilience.  Matthew also hosts a podcast under the same name (10,000 NOs ). A creative impulse prompted him to start this podcast, which has resulted in a very successful show, where he talks to people from all walks of life. More than anything I appreciate Matthew's brutal honesty about his struggles, his achievements, and about the power of self-belief. Matthew and I talked about his upbringing and journey to the point in his life when he decided he wanted to be an actor. We discussed the importance of hearing no, and learning from rejection, the mindset of getting into a character, his new book, his podcast, and so much more. We even go down a rabbit hole of cults and cults leaders. This was an extremely fun conversation, and Matthew is a true inspiration. Enjoy the Episode! Matthew Del Negro Matthew's Instagram My Take: Rejection is an important part of growth; it molds us, strengthens us, and ultimately allows us to grow and improve. The important thing is realizing what we can learn/take away when someone's telling you NO. Was it them, or is it something I can improve on and become better at, on the path to my goals? Never let someone else's perception of you defeat you, as every closed door is an opportunity for another door to open. You know Matthew Del Negro from “Scandal,” “Goliath,” “The West Wing,” or as Cousin Brian on season four of “The Sopranos,” or maybe, like me, you were wowed by his comedic tour de force as Jason Allen Ross in Netflix’s “Huge In France.” He’s currently filming his second season as Detective Chris Caysen on Showtime’s “City on a Hill.” He also hosts a great podcast called “10,000 NOs” where he has deep conversations with people who’ve overcome rejection on the way to success in their field. He’s just written a book of the same name which draws on his own story of survival as an actor, and it’s a gold-filled “must read.” In this hour he talks about his journey as a working actor, the benefit and drawback of having an athlete’s mindset when approaching the work, how a low point in his recent past led directly to an enrichment of his performance, the importance of connecting the role to your own story, and lots more! TIME OUT! Let's take a TO and have a few morsels of sort of random conversation. There's more of a mini story in this one, about how I got amazing health insurance by being an actor... but more of a conversation about standing up for yourself, whether you're an actor, or whatever you are! People's looks and comments can be like daggers in your heart if you haven't had enough experience yet dealing with standing strong. However, NO ONE will take you seriously until YOU do first, and that can take years... particularly in a town like LA or NY that is LITTERED with actors and creatives reaching for goals. Some people who aren't committed do "ruin" it for those of us who do work hard and are disciplined.  However, we can't wait around for people to take us seriously, because even when we are making money or have cold hard evidence of being an actor, they still might not.  Key takeaways: Stand up for yourself, no matter what. DO NOT wait for others to take you seriously. DO WHAT YOU WANT! Whatever profession you are, or want to be in, be disciplined, creative in your approach, determined and work hard and then just BE it. You are it, whether you're compensated or not.  If you're someone who asks actors what they've been in as the first question, it's time to re-think that. Let's think even just a little more outside the box and get to know the person better on the inside, as opposed to judging them from superficial tendencies.  YOU CAN EVEN GET GREAT HEALTH INSURANCE IF YOU'RE AN ACTOR! Sometimes life really shows up for you in the most unexpected ways.    Calling all writers! TRUST ME, you're not the only one who struggles with grammar, procrastination or getting a job! Writers Work is here for you! There’s a beauty in taking a failure, rejection, no, or quit and turning it into something good. It starts with reshaping our minds to see these as opportunities instead. Matthew del Negro has made his life out of accepting no’s with grace. Matthew is an actor and host of the 10,000 No’s podcast. Being an actor, he’s faced many rejections in his life from auditions and pilot episodes, rarely getting callbacks. It’s just the life of an actor! But he’s looking at the positive side of these no’s and has decided to celebrate them for what they are: opportunities in disguise. Now that we’ve established that facing rejection is a chance for the Universe to bring something else to your attention, it’s important to remember that those people you think of as an overnight success are really not. They’ve all gone through the rejection process and have come out on top. But just because you’ve succeeded once, doesn’t mean you will every time - the struggle doesn’t stop just because you’re at the top, it just changes. But Matthew says that just because you accept these no’s or the quits you decide to do, you might still feel a sense of loss and disappointment. It’s okay to feel these, but it’s not okay to wallow in those feelings. Overall, Matthew shares that you need to listen to what your heart wants because it’s rarely going to steer you wrong. One way to help reframe your feelings of rejection is to look at life as one giant audition. Matthew explains how each audition that didn’t end in an acting gig was building who he was, helping his reputation, and taking him closer to the big break. The Universe has its own path for you, you just have to trust it. Have you faced a no in your life before? How do you deal with rejection? When is the last time you put your trust in the Universe? Let us know in the comments on the episode page! In This Episode: Why “overnight successes” are anything but  Why you need to understand that the struggle doesn’t just stop when you have one success What emotions you can experience even when you’re sure you want to quit something Why you should listen to what your heart wants Why you should treat your entire life as an audition How you can trust that the Universe has its own path for you How you can reframe your idea of failure   Quotes: “They have a very different idea of what my life is from what it really is. They see that little tip of the iceberg, they don’t see everything else that goes into it.” (7:01) “Your problems don’t go away, they just morph into something different. Your challenges.” (13:02) “Are you doing it because you told everybody and you’re doing it because you care about them and what they think of you and it’s a bad look? Or are you doing something that you’re really following your heart.” (19:04) “Sometimes quitting, or sometimes a “no,” doesn’t mean you’re never going to do a thing. It just means you’re not doing this thing right now.” (22:07) Links Find Matthew Del Negro Online  Follow Matthew Del Negro on Instagram | Twitter | Facebook Get 10% off your order of Remarkable Wellness adaptogenic mushrooms with code QUIT10!   Check out the full episode post here Keep up with everything Quit Happens here Follow Lynn Marie on Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn | Instagram Podcast production support by the fine folks at Counterweight Creative

After attending a 25th college reunion and a 5th grade graduation in less than a week, Matt riffs on the benefits of stopping to smell the roses and acknowledge the progress that one has made in this solo episode.      SHOWNOTES:   Sometimes you just have to take the risk and try something you’ve never tried before, (2:50). Celebrating milestones can help you keep on track, (3:25). Don’t knock down the opportunities to evaluate yourself and find joy and meaning, (4:50). There’s something really good for the spirit to rekindle some lost paths, (5:30). We must realize that it is important to celebrate the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another, it marks the progress of our growth and change, (7:41). There will always be a next step to life but you have to get your nose out of the ground and acknowledge your progress, (9:40). How can we make the celebration and the work, the same exact thing, if you can do that somehow, you’ve really succeeded, (10:45). Keep grinding but you also have to stop and smell the roses, (13:01). Strive to tell the most empowering story of yourself that you can, (13:10). There’s no need to be someone else but you, (13:40). “You’re going to learn some things, you’re going to forget some things, be good at some things, fail at some things, you’ll be up and down and all around, and just when you think you got the answer, you’ll be challenged by a new obstacle, but the most important thing you can learn is keep taking that next step. If you fall down, get back up, dust yourself off, keep going, (14:15). Dr. Seus said, “You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left”, (15:02).      LINKS:    Matthew Del Negro: https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-92-what-you-do-when-no-one-is-watching-is-what-you-get-rewarded-for-later   Matthew Del Negro:    https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-91-how-to-let-go-of-a-no-so-it-doesnt-control-younbsp   Twitter: https://twitter.com/MatthewDelNegro   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattydel/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/matthew.delnegro2   More About Matt: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0215682/    Zander Fryer: https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-46-sht-you-dont-learn-in-college-zander-fryer?rq=zander   Cathy Heller: https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-69-dont-keep-your-day-jobs-purpose-finder-cathy-heller?rq=cathy   Rob Whitaker:   https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-5-cancer-schmancer-rob-whitaker?rq=rob     If you like what you hear, please Subscribe, leave an iTunes review and spread the word. What You Do When No One is Watching is What You Get Rewarded For Later

In this solo episode, Matt riffs on the idea that what you do when no one is watching is what gets rewarded later in public.  Revealing a guest request made by the staff of an Acting Coach to Oscar Winners and Nominees who turns out to be a passionate listener to 10,000 "No"s, Matt talks about the importance of maintaining standards and how you never know who's out there listening, watching you, or being impacted by you, both positively and negatively.    SHOWNOTES:   “Envisioning and speaking positively into the world and to yourself, (3:22). “It’s a conscious choice to say the things to yourself that will encourage you and that will get you fired up to go after the things that YOU want to go after, (3:41). “You Don’t Know Who’s Listening”, (4:50). It’s important to always true to yourself even when no one is watching or listening, (5:40). When you’re in a rud, say ‘this is significant’, (7:53). Holding yourself to certain standards and knowing that it is not always about you, (9:04). What you do when no one is watching is what you end up getting rewarded for later, (10:00). “The enemy always attacks you at the passes, so he can keep you from going forward in your life”, (10:31). “Sometimes survival is success, just staying in the game, staying in faith”, (11:59). “It’s that Rocky Balboa mentality, just staying in the game. You’re not yet fighting the prize fight but you only will have a shot at the prize fight if you stay in the game, it means just not going through the motions because at some point the passion will go away, but pro’s stay up no matter what, (12:17). If you’re a parent and you’re listening and you’re being pretty honest, you’ll realize that you’ll do things that you are not proud of but making that constant change is what’s really significant, (14:14). “In your life, how do all of your actions land on and impact other people whether it’s good or bad? Hopefully we’re all striving for the better and to leave this place better than we found it, (14:40).     LINKS:  Matthew Del Negro: https://www.10000nos.com/episodes/ep-91-how-to-let-go-of-a-no-so-it-doesnt-control-younbsp  Steven Furtick & Bishop TD Jakes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=CzP23Zti-YI  More About Matt: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0215682/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/MatthewDelNegro  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mattydel/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/matthew.delnegro2    If you like what you hear, please pass on the word. We often think of outcomes as binary – either they happen, or they don't. Think about something you want to happen – this could be a career, relationship or personal goal. Now imagine that at some point in the future, you will learn about the outcome of that objective. You get to that future point, and the outcome is a “no”. Now imagine that you can do something about that – but that this requires you to run a type of weird marathon. At every kilometre marker, you once again get to learn about the outcome to the goal you have been pursuing. In all likelihood, that outcome will once again be a “no”. However, you also know that if you keep running, at some point you will get to a “yes”. You just don't know when. What is the strategy you take to maximise the number of kilometre markers you reach? How do you get through all of those “nos”? This is in many ways, the story of this episode's guest, actor Matthew Del Negro. If you were to read through the list of Matthew's television credits, it reads like a list of some of the most acclaimed and popular shows in American, and world, TV history: The Sopranos, Law and Order; The West Wing; CSI: Miami: Criminal Minds; And most recently the Amazon Prime series Goliath You might think that Matthew's success was either pre-ordained or that it was the result of a massive lucky break. As you will hear however, that is not how it went down. Matthew had to go through many “nos” (perhaps 10,000 of them as goes the title of his own wonderful podcast), to get to the point where he could call himself “an actor”. This is a conversation about perseverance and resilience. It's not only about the necessity of having a passion and self-belief, but it is also about practical strategies and tactics necessary to achieve great things in the face of long odds. HBO, Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, Oscar Nominated Director Whit Stillman, Cannes Directorial Winner Matt Ross, The Duplass Brothers, Chris Messina... these are just a few of Doug's esteemed collaborators. To most Cinematographers over the age of 40 being honest about their feelings, 33 year old Doug Emmett's prolific career would be the source of much envy and jealousy. But to sit down with Doug to talk shop and hear about his journey to his current place in the world of Film & TV, is to love him. Articulate and humble, Doug was uneasy about being interviewed for a podcast called 10,000 "No" s, as he feels like he's lived a charmed life. But, as with anyone in any field, Doug's path to success has been paved with patience, a willingness to fail, a lot of hard work and the ability to overcome the challenges that can sometimes be presented by prickly actors or a sunset that refuses to wait for a particular film or TV show to "get the shot". Doug's journey began early, when at the ripe age of 7, his mother offered to get him and SLR film camera if he took on extra chores to help out his father, who had just suffered a hernia. That led to a mother/son mentorship, where she taught him about lenses and F-stops, and inspired him to go out and shoot videos of neighborhood kids with his brother. A great teacher encouraged him to start a TV show in HS on a local access channel which eventually led him to NYU Film School. But through all of the learning and the success, Doug's mantra has been to serve the story, serve the project and serve the director... which, as of late, sometimes means himself: see his directorial debut of the episode titled The Internet in Season 1 of HBO's Room 104.   10,000 "No" s is available for streaming or download in the podcast section of iTunes (search Matthew Del Negro and then "subscribe" to 10,000 "No" s with Matthew Del Negro), or at: http://tenthousandnos.libsyn.com/website
