As Press Play takes a break for the holidays and wrap up 2024, we listen back to a few of our favorite interviews of the year. The groundbreaking TV show “My So-Called Life” made waves 30 years ago, especially because of Wilson Cruz’s portrayal of biracial, queer teenager Rickie Vasquez. Noel Fielding is known in the U.S. for co-hosting “The Great British Bake-Off.” In his latest streaming show, he plays an infamous British highwayman, but with a twist. A new documentary series examines the world of 1980s hair metal music. KCRW talks to director Jeff Tremaine and founding Guns N’ Roses member Tracii Guns.

FX AND TRILL. The clue trail leads Discovery to Trill, which gives Adira a chance to sort out their relationship with Gray while Burnham, Book, and Culber go on an adventure with a previous Trill host who was involved in the breakup of the Progenitors tech. Will any of this make sense as characters repeat plot details or is it a simple tour de force of VFX as Burnham and Book dodge exploding barbs launched from cloaked monsters that are indigenous to Trill! Meanwhile, Rayner gets to know the crew by forcing them to give brief, 20-word statements as a way of getting to know them. Will his rough edges rub the delicate crew the wrong way or will Tilly be able to sand those edges before Burnham gets back to the ship?Joining Bryan for this voyage through Disco's 5th season is Shereese the Sci-Fi Savage (@SciFiSavage on all social platforms). She has a weekly stream on YouTube called "The Savage Stream," every Wednesday night, 6pm PT/ 9 pm ET -- check it out!The grades begin at (33:41).
Jane is a storyteller. Through her company, FilmMcQueen, she has brought numerous shorts and 3 feature films to life, winning 18 awards and another 8 nominations by envisioning strong characters in visceral environments. She has worked in film with actors such as Lukas Haas, David Arquette, Candis Cayne, Wilson Cruz, Theo Rossi and Necar Zadigan, as well as Emmy-winning sound wizard, Andy D'Addario ("Mozart in the Jungle"), Emmy award-winning DP Per Larsson ("The Amazing Race") and musician Curt Smith (co-founder of Tears for Fears). Jane focuses on character exploration and tells stories that move audiences to laughter and tears by revealing shades of gray beneath a surface of black or white. In 2017 she ventured into VR with a narrative horror short based on her feature "Don't Come Over", co-written with Guinevere Turner ("American Psycho" and the upcoming "Manson Girls") and onto the small screen with a web-series incarnation of her "Crazy Bitches" franchise.
When an emergency medical spaceship receives a distress call, James Spader's boring deep-space work release job turns into a sexy color-timed adventure. But when the crew's Captain dies in a freak nude-tube accident, taking over command means defeating the universe's most basic villain. Who was the luckiest cast member? Why will Ben be a big hit at the senior home? What is this horror movie trying to ruin? It's the episode that's notable as an artifact of its time.Link to this week's Warning BuoySupport the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social

The Democratic Convention kept the good times rolling for Kamala Harris and a rejuvenated Democratic Party. But with 10 weeks until Election Day, the race is tied. Thanks to a little-known provision in the law that compensates whistleblowers for the fraud they expose, one man has turned it into a lucrative business. The groundbreaking TV show “My So-Called Life” made waves 30 years ago, especially because of Wilson Cruz’s portrayal of biracial, queer teenager Rickie Vasquez. After a 15-year hiatus, Liam and Noel Gallagher are reuniting Oasis. The brothers are known for their decades-long feud that has troubled the band’s reputation.

It's time to dust off the gritty 90s VHS archives for an honest and gut wrenching film about growing up in NYC, discovering your queer identity, and the complexities of female relationships. Jules is along for this episode where we talk 'All Over Me' from 1997. I first rented this in high school and it has been on my list to watch again. This film grew on us as we compared to other films of the time that feel more like a documentary and a visual portrait. The soundtrack was completely up our alley with bands like Babes in Toyland, Helium, and Patti Smith. The fashion was so realistic and inspires today, we read some Letterboxd reviews, and discuss other intense female friendships on film that we enjoy.Watch the film on Youtube: https://youtu.be/OmfqcIlvd5w?si=xo1q0X8uFDy5agx8---Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! In this review, we take a dive into the third episode of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery, titled Jinaal. Wilson Cruz delivers a commanding performance as Hugh Culber/Jinaal, while Commander Rayner, albeit reluctantly, gets to know the crew of the Discovery. You won't want to miss a detail of this episode as we unpack and analyze it all.
When the poem leads an away team to the milk caves on Trill, Culber is way too eager to be inhabited by Jinaal Bix. But while Burnham and Book prove their worthiness in the quarry, Rayner learns Discovery's crew members are surprisingly verbose. Where is there never any palace intrigue? What's the first thing you want to do in Wilson Cruz's body? How do you prep a dimple? It's the episode that wants more representation eggs in more baskets!Support the production of Greatest TrekGet a thing at podshop.biz!Sign up for our mailing list!Greatest Trek is produced by Wynde PriddySocial media is managed by Rob Adler and Bill TilleyMusic by Adam RaguseaFriends of DeSoto for: Labor | Democracy | JusticeDiscuss the show using the hashtag #GreatestTrek and find us on social media:YouTube | Facebook | X | Instagram | TikTok | Mastodon | Bluesky | ThreadsAnd check out these online communities run by FODs: Reddit | USS Hood Discord | Facebook group | Wikia | FriendsOfDeSoto.social
[Discovery 503 review starts at 23:00] Anthony gives an update on the Star Trek prequel movie, then he and Laurie dig in to the latest on the Paramount/Skydance talks, talking about why shareholders aren’t thrilled about Shari Redstone’s plans and what that could mean. They discuss the new offerings from the Roddenberry Archive and new Star Trek-branded coffee, then turn their attention to Star Trek: Discovery. They talk about showrunner Michelle Paradise’s reasons for using TNG’s “The Chase” as an inspiration for the season, plus Mary Wiseman’s (not-so) cryptic comments about the Starfleet Academy show, and play some audio from Laurie’s recent interview with Wilson Cruz on the same topic. They briefly chat about the “This season on…” trailer and then dive into their review of Discovery episode 503, “Jinaal,” talking about Wilson Cruz’s strong performance, Trill mythology, the challenges of juggling multiple stories where some are less compelling than others, and more.
