In this episode, we dive into a fascinating mix of tech history, personal stories, and entertainment recommendations. We chat with Bob Martin, who shares insights from his new book, offering a look back at the pioneers of computing, including early breakthroughs and the industry's evolution. Bob talks about the challenges of leaving out influential figures like Margaret Hamilton, Donald Knuth, and Linus Torvalds, while also reminiscing about his early career as a self-taught developer during the 70s.The conversation takes a fun turn when we discuss some mind-blowing tech feats, including a wild project where Doom was implemented using TypeScript's type system—a true demonstration of the power of programming languages. For those into entertainment, we share some great picks, like the classic science fiction novels When Worlds Collide and After Worlds Collide, plus a rundown of TV shows like Reacher and the intriguing comparison between the Expanse books and TV show. Packed with history, tech talk, and plenty of geeky fun, this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of computing!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/javascript-jabber--6102064/support.

Based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, it was primarily directed by Victor Fleming, who left production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind. It stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. Noel Langley, Florence Ryerson, and Edgar Allan Woolf received credit for the screenplay, while others made uncredited contributions. The music was composed by Harold Arlen and adapted by Herbert Stothart, with lyrics by Edgar "Yip" Harburg. Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu, and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first installment of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name based on the 1995 novel, which in turn is based on the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. How beautiful is all the craft to behold on-screen as this movie unfolds? Where's the story where the town revolts against that disgusting Miss Gulch? Wait, how many times did that dog actor portray a dog named Toto? How great is all the vaudeville physical comedy these actors utilize? And in a film filled with terror, how horrifying are those talking trees? PLUS: Did the CIA put the poison in Oz's poppy fields? The Wizard of Oz stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, Charley Grapevine, Clara Blandick, and Terry as Toto; directed by Victor Fleming. Tread Perilously continues a witchy October with The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. When neighborhood kids harass Paul Lynde about his plans to celebrate Halloween, he flees to the home of his housekeeper's sister. But he soon learns both are witches with remarkable resemblances to Witchiepoo and The Wicked Witch of the West. As it turns out, they want him to be a spokesman for witches. In return, he'll get three wishes granted and a private concert from KISS. The latter aspect is not negotiable. What wishes will Paul get granted? Will KISS let Peter sing "Beth"? And will guest stars Billy Barty, Florence Henderson, and Betty White make a mark on the proceedings? Erik and Justin try to deal with a variety special making a stab at an ongoing narrative. They also conjure the Osmonds back into existence. The previous on-screen persona of Betty White is explored. Bruce Vilanch returns as Erik reads out a very long list of writers. The Pinky Tuscadero phenomenon gets explained ... including the unlikely connection to Suzi Quatro. The pair take a closer look at KISS and give "Beth" a review. Erik decries the industry for not giving Margaret Hamilton a true starring role and the long delayed Alien: Romulus chat finally occurs.
What a CreepThe Salem Witch TrialsSeason 27, Episode 1The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions that took place in colonial Massachusetts from February 1692 to May 1693. These trials resulted in the execution of 20 individuals, most of whom were women, who were accused of practicing witchcraft. The hysteria began in the Puritan village of Salem, which is now present-day Danvers, but the panic quickly spread to other communities in the region. In this episode, we explore what life was like in Salem Village and examine the factors that led nearly 20% of its population to believe that they or their neighbors were involved in witchcraft. *GREAT! VIDEO VERSION: https://bit.ly/3ZdVAuO America's favorite movie (and other countries too) is celebrating a milestone birthday. So why a scandal? Well, most people don't know that the production of this cherished family film was fraught with many bizarre difficulties and life-threatening events for certain actors. Just a sample - Margaret Hamilton, the actress that played the Wicked Witch, received 3rd degree burns in her fire scenes that required 6 weeks of hospitalization. The 123 small people playing the “Munchkins” went more than a little crazy in Hollywood/LA with the money they were paid. And (then) 15 year old star, Judy Garland, would get hooked on the narcotics, MGM studio doctors prescribed to her. A life long addiction that resulted in her untimely death at only age 47. Great, beloved movie, yes – but with an inexplicable legacy of terrible behind-the scenes calamities. Anuradha and I cover it all for you! "Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness?" We made it to 250 episodes and what an opportunity to bring you the end all be all of a literal Movie That Made Us Gay! We welcome back the hilarious H. Alan Scott to review this cinema classic starring Judy Garland and Margaret Hamilton as two of the most iconic characters of the silver screen. This movie is woven into the fabric of our culture - from casual recognition even if you've never seen it (how?) right down to the commemorative plate collecting, memorabilia fanatics. We talk about the inherent queerness of this movie, its enduring legacy in our community and we even squeeze in an FMK with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. Do we identify more and more with the Wicked Witch of the West as we inch toward Elder Gay status? Absolutely. We never thought of ourselves as die-hard Wizard of Oz gays but it turns out our commorative 3D Bluray and waaay to many pics from the Motion Picture Academy Museum exhibit might say otherwise. A number of witches were on my show throughout the years, but none as famous as the Wicked Witch of the West, played by Margaret Hamilton in the movie “The Wizard of Oz.” While filming, she was burned on her face and hand during a fiery exit from Munchinland and out six weeks before returning to the set. Margaret told the producer there would be no more fire scenes for her. She did not sue, thinking she'd never be hired to do another film. Hamilton did some radio work and had a part on three episodes of “The Addams Family.” When she appeared on “Mr. Rogers Neighborhood” she attempted to convince the children not to be afraid of the wicked witch.

TVC 644.6a: Greg Ehrbar discusses the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of The Daydreamer (1966), a feature-length live-action and Animagic-animated adaptation of some of the most famous fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen that was produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, and which featured the talents of Hayley Mills, Tallulah Bankhead, Jack Guilford, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Boris Karloff, Burl Ives, Victor Borge, Terry-Thomas, Ed Wynn, Patty Duke, and Robert Goulet. Though unsuccessful at the box office at the time it was originally released, The Daydreamer, in many respects, served as a precursor to the many television specials that Rankin-Bass produced throughout the 1970s. I sit down for a thought-provoking conversation with Kim Crawley, author of "Hacker Culture: A to Z." The discussion serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the complexities of hacker culture, cybersecurity, and the ever-changing landscape of technology. The episode begins with Kim demystifying the dark web, a term often laden with negative connotations. While it's true that the dark web is a breeding ground for illegal activities such as drug trafficking and cybercrime, Kim points out that it's also a refuge for political dissidents and whistleblowers. This perspective adds a layer of nuance to the conventional narrative, encouraging listeners to view the dark web as a more multifaceted domain. As the conversation progresses, Kim expresses her reservations about the increasing demand for user identification on social media platforms like Twitter. She argues that such requirements could potentially infringe on the anonymity that many users rely on, particularly those who use these platforms as a means to speak out against oppressive regimes or to act as whistleblowers. This leads her to discuss her migration to alternative social media platforms like Mastodon and Blue Sky, which offer more privacy and less centralized control. The dialogue then shifts to the historical aspects of computer programming. Kim highlights the seminal contributions of figures like Grace Hopper, Ada Lovelace, and Margaret Hamilton, emphasizing that the field of technology is built on collective intelligence rather than individual genius. This segues into a discussion of Kim's other book, "Agriculture A to Z," which, despite its casual tone, underscores the importance of recognizing that groundbreaking technologies often have roots in collaborative efforts, including those originating from military projects. Towards the end of the episode, the focus turns to the subject of self-education and continuous learning. Kim shares her personal learning methods, which include spending time online, reading books, and hands-on experimentation with technology. She stresses that learning is a natural process that can be undertaken by anyone, regardless of their background or previous education. This episode with Kim Crawley is a masterclass in understanding the intricate world of hacker culture and cybersecurity. It challenges preconceived notions, offers fresh perspectives, and encourages a more nuanced understanding of technology's role in modern society. Whether you're a seasoned tech expert or a curious layperson, this conversation offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie at the intersection of technology, culture, and ethics.
Everyone's favorite “Superstar”, Molly Shannon, shares why and how Victor Fleming's 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz has blown her mind. From her first viewing at age four, to her star turn as Dorothy in Cleveland's Heights Youth Theater production, The Wizard of Oz is a metaphorical reflection of many of Molly's life experiences. We hear from her about the iconic performances by Judy Garland as Dorothy and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West, an only-in-Hollywood moment at an L.A. grocery store, and art as a conduit to healing. The Wizard of Oz aired on network television every December from 1959-1991, becoming a holiday tradition for generations of Americans. Millions of us know this film by heart, but Molly's story is unique in her deeply personal connections to the movie's themes of home and belonging, friendship, self-determination, and what we hope to find over the rainbow. "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore!"REBROADCASTStill a ClassicVictor Fleming didn't just direct two movies in 1939, he directed two of what many consider to be the greatest films made – Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz. Where the former, though, has more problems to contend with in today's society, what with its depiction of slavery and race in the South during the Civil War, the latter is nothing but pure cinematic joy. Seen by more people than any other movie, The Wizard of Oz has become infused in who we are. Quotes from the movie can pop up in everyday conversation without people even realizing they're quoting it. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our ‘films of 1939' series with one of the great cinema achievements, Flemings' The Wizard of Oz. Here's a Look Into Our ConversationWe talk about what makes this film so great and why it's lasted so long, looking at everything from the story to the music to Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale. We discuss Fleming as the main director putting the film together, the 14 writers tasked with bringing this script to life, and L. Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz stories. We chat about the actors – Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Margaret Hamilton, Jerry Maren, the Singer Midgets and more (not to mention Terry the dog as Toto) – and look at what they all bring to the table here. We chat about Buddy Gillespie's special effects, Adrian's costumes, Harold Rosson's cinematography, Herbert Stothart's music adaptation, Harold Arlen's & Yip Harberg's songs and Mervyn LeRoy's & Arthur Freed's producing, tying together all the elements they each were responsible for. And we comment on the popularity of the film, chat about it being a gay icon, and look at how it started at a loss but ended up making bank over the decades.
