"Digital did not ruin filmmaking. Digital gave us the Duplass brothers. Digital democratized it and then people were like, 'Oh well, it's not digital that's going to ruin it, it's this thing called YouTube that's going to ruin it.' And in fact YouTube is incredibly entertaining and good stuff percolates up all the time. And I would just say, sadly every new technology turn has been met with the same argument of it's going to ruin X, and yet it hasn't."Today's episode is a sit down with Matt's friend and award-winning film director, Ben Hansford, where they discuss AI and how it's affecting actors & the entertainment industry. Ben, one of the leading creatives in the A.I. & Machine Learning space (which he now teaches at USC), has worked on multi-national campaigns for some of the world's largest brands including Nike, Old Spice, Bethesda, Call of Duty, Bungie, Activision, EA, X-Box, Microsoft, Mountain Dew, Marvel, & more. Host Nikki Boyer sits down with Rob Delaney and Jay Duplass, who bring depth and humanity to the male characters in FX's 'Dying for Sex.' Delaney opens up about playing the enigmatic 'neighbor guy,' finding vulnerability in comedy, and creating chemistry with Michelle Williams. Then, Duplass discusses embodying Steve, Molly's well-intentioned but overbearing husband, and shares behind-the-scenes insights about filming some of the show's most vulnerable moments. Together, they explore how this story about death ultimately teaches us how to live more fully.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you're a filmmaker still hoping for a studio greenlight, you're already behind. In this episode, we break down:-Why Rodriguez and Duplass are ditching Hollywood's traditional model-The key lessons you can apply to fund and distribute your own film-Why indie filmmakers must take control before it's too late
Andrew had his first real run-in with A.I. yesterday, and he's still reeling from it. Luke's interview with the Duplass brothers went well…until the very end. And we open up the TBTL voicemail line to share a heck ton of listener messages!
Luke is headed out to interview the Duplass brothers this afternoon, and he's a little nervous about it. Meanwhile, Andrew is upset that opening day is still so far away.
Watch This Episode On YouTubeAttend A Screening Of PAPER MARRIAGE in Washington, DCTo paraphrase Walt Whitman, Jeff Man is a man that contains multitudes. He often plays a character, like in PAPER MARRIAGE (2024) and SANTA CLAUS (2017), that is reserved and unsure of himself, and the stories, at least partially, revolve around how he -- and the outside world -- reacts to those personality traits. During our conversation, he talks about how he grapples with these questions in his own life and utilizes his art to get to a greater truth. And yet.In many of his short films and his debut feature, PAPER MARRIAGE, he writes, directs, and acts in a lead role. He is an extraordinarily talented, supremely unique filmmaker, which I'd argue makes for a great podcast guest. I think you'll agree. In this episode, we talk about:how he got started in filmmaking and the story behind his debut feature, PAPER MARRIAGE -- he originally thought he'd be a film critic;why he wrote, directed, and starred in his first feature -- the Duplass brothers forced him to do it! (out of love, of course);how he handled the work flow of directing...himself...and other characters;his thoughts on the current political debate surrounding immigration, DEI, and his film, especially on the eve of its Valentine's Day screening;his relationship with the Duplass brothers and how supportive they are of his vision as executive producers;why he loves Washington, DC;keeping up an active Instagram for a debut feature film;how much we love SMOKING TIGERS and the work of So Young Shelly Yo;the real-to-life feeling of PAPER MARRIAGE and how Jeff emotionally and intellectually got there to create such a film;what's next for him.Jeff's Indie Film Highlights: 9500 LIBERTY (2009) dir. by Annabel Park and Eric Byler; DEAD TALENT SOCIETY (2024) dir. by John Hsu; BECOMING WHO I WAS (2016) dir. by Moon Chang-young; Jeon Jim; SMOKING TIGERS (2023) dir. by So Young Shelly YoTrivia:The quote "chance favors the prepared mind" is from Louis Pasteur, not Thomas Edison.Links:Follow Jeff Man on InstagramFollow Jeff Man on VimeoAttend A Screening Of PAPER MARRIAGE in Washington, DCSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content
The gang comes makes it weird this week, as they review Tyler's pick from the Wheel of Destiny, Cyrus, starring John C Reilly, Jonah Hill, and Marisa Tomei. What's the best movie trilogy? For Liz Hunt, there's only one answer to that question: The Lord of the Rings. The CEO and Chief Creative at DayCloud Studios weighs in on the original books, the 1977 animated film, Peter Jackson, and also Dune (with some Duplass-puppet-Togetherness memories), the Spider-Verse, Superman, and Batman. Plus we attempt to answer the question, "Does Henry Cavill's wig work in The Witcher?" And just for fun, we touch on board games and why being a Dungeon Master sounds like the best part of fantasy tabletop role-playing games (TTRPG). We've got a supersized episode to wrap up September as we talk about 12 individual movies! This got a lot bigger than expected…needless to say, antics ensue. We start by a getting a fresh-out-the-theatre review from Christian about Jason Reitman's new film Saturday Night. After that, he shares his thoughts on two other new releases, Transformers One and A Different Man. Then, Scott updates us with the 4 new-ish release films he caught up with on flights over the weekend. Once the new release roundup is complete, we debut a new format in the show, Booze You've Never Heard Of! We talk about one of the Coen brothers lesser seen films from the early 21st century, and round it out with early films from the Wachowskis, Radio Silence, Safdie brothers, and Duplass brothers. Did we pique your interest in any of these movies? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com. Stay tuned to hear our horror theme for October!
The House of Representatives is voting on a stopgap funding bill–but Washington expects it to fail. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) discusses the voter verification legislation that he's attached to the bill, despite limited Republican support. Actor, writer, and producer Mark Duplass is known for his roles on The Morning Show and The Mindy Project, but he's betting on a big shift for streaming. Ahead of the launch of “Penelope,” Duplass explains his inspiration for his new series and for a new approach to the entertainment business. The EU has ruled to annul a $1.7B fine on Alphabet, and Steve Cohen is stepping further back from the trading desks at Point72, and Ozempic might be targeted for a price cut. Plus, former President Trump has vowed to “get SALT back” if reelected, despite having signed the SALT deduction cap into law during his first term. I had the opportunity to go LIVE on the RED CARPET at Tribeca for three movies. The first was interview the Duplass family for their film "Oh, Christmas Tree." This 11 minute short film was shot in their cabin in upstate NY. It truly was a family affair, written by Mark Duplass to star in with his daughter Ora Duplass, and directed by Katie Aselton, Mark's wife and Ora's mom. I asked them a couple of questions about shooting this short film and working together. It was Ora's first time in a film, so I asked her about her preparation for this role and whether it felt performative to ask with her Dad. I also asked about advice for filmmakers. I truly found this particular short very inspiring. They shot this as a family, with only one extra person to record sound. I was able to tie in a fun question at the end! Synopsis: It's been a bit of a year for 16 year-old Claire and her father Ben. All they really want to do is put it behind them. But Christmas is here and their silly holiday traditions are staring them dead in the face, practically taunting these two to give them a try after all they've been through. This short film by the Duplass family is as much an examination of mental health as it is an attempt to explore the emotional minefield of ever-shifting family dynamics. Mark Duplass - Mark is a filmmaker, actor, writer and musician. His credits include Bombshell, Safety Not Guaranteed, Tammy, The Mindy Project, and Charlie "Chip" Black on The Morning Show. Poorna Jagannathan brought us the story of Indian Olympic boxer and politician, Mary Kom. Poorna is an actress and the producer of "Nirbhaya" ('Fearless'), the critically-acclaimed play written and directed by Yael Farber. In 2018 she was a member of the ensemble cast of HBO's "Room 104," created by the Duplass brothers. Most recently, Poorna plays Nalini Vishwakumar in Mindy Kaling's comedy series "Never Have I Ever." To call Piper Laurie an underrated genre icon would not be entirely correct. She was an award winning actress who grabbed the spotlight in pretty much everything she was in. It is not until looking at her entire career that her contributions can be truly appreciated. We also revisit the idea of a Halloween television show and talk about the future of the V/H/S franchise.True crime stories have real life horror naturally built into them. The Man in the White Van decides to lean into horror tropes and gives an almost slasher feel. It is a good idea in theory, but the execution makes for one of the worst things we have seen this year. From confusing editing to an ending that fails to work on any level, we go over everything it did wrong while trying to find something good about it.At the other end of the spectrum is Last Stop Larrimah. For obvious reasons, there are not a lot of lighthearted true crime documentaries. This HBO documentary looks at the mysterious disappearance of a man living in the Australian outback. He lives in a small town of eleven people, and everyone is a suspect. The film is able to mix humorous moments into its dark story without ever taking away from the gravity of the case. It is a bit of fresh storytelling that injects life into the genre. The already interesting case is made even more engaging thanks to the way in which everything unfolds. It is easily one of the better things we have seen this year.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. I invited to Laura to the podcast after binge-watching the series Beef on Netflix earlier this year and being really impressed with everything about that show, but particularly the editing and how it balances the modulating tone and storylines so deftly. Laura was nominated for an Emmy for her work on that show, and not for the first time, she previously won for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series in Euphoria. She also worked on Josephine Decker's film The Sky is Everywhere and the Duplass brothers' show Room 104. Most recently she edited two episodes of the new Apple TV+ series Lessons in Chemistry, starring Brie Larson. The first three episodes are available to watch as of today. We talk about how she developed an interest in editing, her experience of internships and assisting, including etiquette and how to read a room, being obsessive with music and making playlists for her projects, editing an actors' performance, staying emotionally engaged with the work, Avid being her first language and trusting the process. "Biosphere" had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the less you know about this two-hander science fiction story starring Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown, the better. However, you should know that it received positive reviews and is quite unlike anything you've ever seen. In this weeks episode of the world's-fastest-movie-review podcast Jackson and Mike review three(!) new films!!! First “THE LESSON”. A young author takes a tutoring position at the estate of a legendary writer. Starring Richard E. Grant, Julie Delpy and Daryl McCormack. Then a quick review of “BIOSPHERE“ In the not-too-distant future, the last two men on earth must adapt and evolve to save humanity. Starring Sterling K. Brown and Mark Duplass. And our quick take on “THE OUT-LAWS” A doofus bank manager is about to marry the love of his life, but suspects his in-laws are notorious bank robbers. Starring Adam Devine, Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin.
Marking the directorial debut of long-time Duplass brothers' collaborator, Mel Eslyn, BIOSPHERE drops us into the confined lives of Billy (Mark Duplass) and Ray (Sterling K. Brown), lifelong best friends and the last two men on earth. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed a domed structure with all the systems necessary to sustain life on a planet that could no longer support it. Their custom biosphere is outfitted with basic necessities and creature comforts that make it possible to retain a sense of what life used to be like. A hydroponic garden provides fresh vegetables and a carefully managed fishpond supplies essential protein. Recently, however, fish have begun dying at an alarming rate. With a mere three fish remaining, Billy and Ray face an ominous future. But life may yet find a way. Uproarious and tender in equal measure, BIOSPHERE was a festival favorite. Director Mel Eslyn (Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off, The Lady and the Dale) joins us to talk about making the leap from producing into the director's chair, as well as finding the credible cinematic space where humor and pathos can co-exist as well as they do in BIOSPHERE. Mark Duplass is the living patron saint of the indie filmmaker. Honest, simple, modest, positive, affirming about the work, Duplass, first with his brother Jay and now on his own, has become a household name in the film world for producing projects in a DIY style foregrounding authenticity, improvisational humor, and human connection. As an actor, both in his own productions and also series like “The Morning Show,” he finds a way to keep that homegrown genuineness alive in front of the camera. His latest film, “Biosphere,” which he co-wrote with director Mel Eslyn, is a true two-hander (with the wonderful Sterling K. Brown) that never fails to surprise and is sure to be a summer crowdpleaser when it opens on July 7th. On this episode, he talks about how his approach to acting grew out of necessity as a filmmaker, what he loved about being directed by his trusted partner Eslyn, why he himself hasn't directed for over eight years, what he needed to adjust when working in more precision-oriented productions, why he's cautiously optimistic about the AI effect on acting, and much more! Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
In which the Mister joins me in reviewing BLUE JAY (2016), currently available on Netflix. Directed by Alex Lehmann and written by Mark Duplass, we follow the story of how Amanda (Sarah Paulson) and Jim (Mark Duplass) reconnect after more than 2 decades and go down memory lane together in sometimes goofy and sometimes excruciatingly heartbreaking ways. Paulson and Duplass are heartbreakingly beautiful as two people who come together again after so much time apart but you can tell they still have a deep love for each other. The film has a run time of 1 h and 20 m and is unrated according to IMDB. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.

Meet us at Ye Olde Donut Time! We watched the most stressful Christmas movie of all time: Tangerine (2015). Sometimes the true meaning of the holidays is just not to be trippin'. We run through the streets of LA screaming about Santa standards, the Holy Trintity of Jam Ramcom, Raccacoonie, anti-Everspring propaganda, car holidays, boo boo, the Duplass duplicity, lots of crystal meth, no dice, and walking songs. We were delighted to chat with Nana Mensah, director, writer and actress. Her first feature film Queen Of Glory, in which she also stars, met with much critical acclaim and was praised for its astute, unsentimental and at times downright hilarious portrayal of a Ghanian family in the US and high achieving academic daughter. We chat about her foray into filmmaking, how she made use of available resources, recent work by emerging filmmakers and artists of African origin(s) in and she shares her experience on the relationship friends and family of Ghanaian and other African origins have with the US. Jay Duplass never wanted to be an actor. For years, he remained entirely behind the scenes of the intimate indie films he wrote and directed with younger brother Mark Duplass. Then, he was handed the role of Josh Pfefferman in ‘Transparent,' which transformed his life and career more than he ever could have imagined when he still thought it was a little “web show” for Amazon. In this episode, Duplass reveals how his latest acting gig as “Mr. COVID” Jesse Bloom on HBO's ‘Industry' was inspired by Jeff Bezos, opens up about the difficult decision to separate from his brother professionally, explains why it would be “unthinkable” for a cis actor to play Jeffrey Tambor's role on ‘Transparent' today—even if that's what viewers “needed” at the time—and a lot more. For their first screenwriting DEEP DIVE, Kay and Rob have chosen their personal, sterling example of one location ingenuity, "The One I Love" starring Elizabeth Moss, Mark Duplass and Tony Dan -- sorry Danson, Ted Danson. Kay and Rob manage to extoll the virtues of this brilliant film with NO SPOILERS (mostly), so feel free to listen and then watch the movie to see what they see. In fact, you probably should. Our Weekly Resource: "The One I love" (of course), which, is currently streaming on HBOMax, WHICH, as we discuss in the episode, now has *the* catalogue for all of those "film school movies" that are a part of curriculums across the world. From Truffaut to Kurosawa, to Duplass (and everything in between), a subscription to HBOMax is probably worth your cash. Lynn Shelton returns to team Duplass, this time with Jay. How well do they do as co-writers? Why weren't people talking about Edie Falco and her performance in this film more? We also love Kaitlyn Dever who clearly shows she's incredibly talented. And how does Shelton do with a straightforward drama? Tune in to this week's show to get answers to these questions and more!

Director Nick Bruckman and Producer Amanda Roddy talk about their upcoming film, Not Going Quietly. The film follows activist Ady Barkan as he travels the country fighting for healthcare reform. Over the course of the film, Ady's health deteriorates due to ALS, a deadly disease he was diagnosed with in 2016. Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, and Bradley Whitford serve as executive producers, and a clip of the film screened at the DNC.When they're not working on Not Going Quietly, Nick and Amanda make videos and digital campaigns for companies and non-profits at People's Television. In this episode, Nick, Amanda, and Jennie discuss commercial work vs. doc filmmaking, how they were able to capture such private moments related to Ady's declining health, and getting the Duplass brothers on board as executive producers. Not Going Quietly on Instagram, Facebook, and TwitterNick Bruckman on InstagramRough Cut on InstagramHost Jennie Butler on InstagramProducer Sky Dylan-Robbins on InstagramLearn more about The Video Consortium
Cathy and Todd discuss how self-awareness, vulnerability, and a willingness to listen upfront lead to authentic and connected conversations later. They discuss how this applies to race discussions, partnership, and parenting, and how cognitive dissonance and whataboutism get in the way of meaningful and productive communication. They reference So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo, Brene Brown's podcast with the Duplass brothers, and White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo.

The unfortunate Brian Wells walked into a bank in 2003 with a bomb around his neck; grabbed a lollipop from the counter; and set off (so to speak) a chain reaction of mayhem that led investigators back to a pair of "masterminds" who may have outsmarted themselves instead of law enforcement. Netflix's four-part docuseries Evil Genius drops Friday May 11 (so, warning: this section may contain spoilers), and returning guest Toby Ball and I watched two screeners and can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds. How much did Wells know? Is Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong really a black (common-law) widow? Does the latest true story from the Duplass bros have the same excellent build, but frustrating info gaps, as Wild Wild Country? We stuck with the bank-robbery theme for our Cold Case topic this week, FBI Files's third-season episode on a prolific Seattle thief the feds named "Hollywood," and while there's lots to discuss about the case, the show is, alas, an example of how the non-fiction crime genre has evolved over the last decade and a half...and a cautionary tale about taking the FBI's "side" in your narrative when the case in question actually kind of points up their screw-ups. On today's episode, I talk to the creators of the new HBO show Animals Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano. Phil and Mike are from New Jersey and Long Island respectively, and while working at an advertising agency together, the two created the webseries Animals, which was then shown at Channel 101 and garnered the "Best Comedy Pilot" award at the 2013 New York Television Festival. After a manager introduce the pair to the Duplass brothers, Mike and Phil moved to LA where the Duplasses helped them independently produce a season of the show, which then got sold to HBO (where you can now see it!).This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
We revisit our conversation with filmmaking brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, whose movie, Cyrus, marked a turning point in their careers. They'd made feature films but never before with studio backing, never with known actors and never with significant budgets. As darlings of the indie world and trailblazers in the mumblecore filmmaking style they gained acclaim at festivals and on blogs, but now they're rising stars in Hollywood and are currently in post production on their next film, Jeff Who Lives at Home.
