This week on In the Room, we sit down with Andy Fisher, five-time Emmy-nominated and DGA Award-winning director of Jimmy Kimmel Live.Andy takes us from his Austin comedy roots, where he was making strange DIY films with friends on whatever equipment they could find, to his early editing days in Los Angeles, to the moment he was asked to step into the director's chair at one of late night's biggest shows. It's a conversation about live television, creative confidence, comedy, collaboration, the future of broadcast, and the strange little moments that turn into a career. Andy also shares stories about the Duplass brothers, the Matt Damon joke, directing awards-show segments, and why the best advice might be: say yes, then figure it out.Funny, loose, deeply specific, and full of filmmaker gold, this one is for anyone who has ever tried to make something before they felt ready.

Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton's lives are completely intertwined. They've been married for almost 20 years while collaborating on films, raising children and spending as much time together as possible. The two see the same therapist, are nearly constantly touching each other and find it hard to function when one of them is away, a dynamic they describe as codependent. Their codependency is the inspiration for their new film “Magic Hour,” which they co-wrote and which Aselton directs and stars in. For the couple, codependency has added real depth and beauty to their relationship to the point they think the entire concept needs a rebranding. In this episode of “Modern Love,” Duplass and Aselton make their case for codependency, explain what it has enabled in their lives and share what they've had to sacrifice to maintain it. Creep (2014) is one of the most unsettling found footage horror movies of the 2010s, and in this episode of Cutting Deep into Horror, Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi dig into why Patrick Brice's microbudget nightmare still works so well. This episode centers on Creep, the 2014 psychological horror film directed by Patrick Brice and built around the deeply unnerving chemistry between Mark Duplass and Brice himself. The uploaded episode notes describe the discussion as a deep dive into trust, manipulation, ethical boundaries, filmmaking, and emotional vulnerability, with the hosts also teasing One Cut of the Dead for next week.  Inside this episodeWhy Creep feels so real and why its awkward, intimate style makes the horror hit harderJosef as a manipulator, using warmth, humor, and vulnerability as weaponsFound footage tension and how the film turns normal social discomfort into dreadFilmmaking ethics and performance, including how the movie comments on directors, subjects, and emotional exploitationHenrique and Rachael's own filmmaking stories, including videography and client-boundary experiences that echo the film's anxietiesThe final act and ending, and why the movie lingers long after it is overThese themes line up closely with the episode chapters and summary embedded in the uploaded transcript file, including sections on wedding videography struggles, first impressions, the shift in atmosphere, the Peachfuzz reveal, manipulation, and filmmaking truths.   About the filmCreep premiered at SXSW on March 8, 2014. It was directed by Patrick Brice, with story credit shared by Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass, and it has gone on to become a modern cult favorite in found-footage and psychological horror circles. It stars Mark Duplass as Josef and Patrick Brice as Aaron. Where to watch (U.S., this week)Current U.S. availability appears to include Netflix, Netflix Standard with Ads, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Prime Video with Ads for streaming, with Amazon Video and Fandango At Home showing rental and/or purchase options. I'm only listing options that were corroborated across multiple sources. Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi go beyond a surface-level review and really get into why Creep feels so disturbing, how Josef weaponizes performance, and why the movie doubles as a nasty little commentary on storytelling itself.

Once upon a time, there was an inventor and entrepreneur named Madam C.J. Walker. She was the child of slaves, the first in her family to be born free, thanks to the Emancipation Proclamation. As a child, she had to work in the cotton fields to help support her family. Later, as a teenaged orphan, she became a washerwoman, backbreaking work considered one of the worst and most difficult jobs a woman could have. But she dreamed of more -- for herself and her daughter. When, due to an illness, her hair began to fall out, she created a hair care regimen specifically for African-American women. It worked! She crisscrossed the country going door to door to sell her products and eventually built a beauty empire with sales representatives in every state. The formula grew to be so popular she became the first self-made female millionaire in America, and her products are still for sale today. About the Narrator Poorna Jagannathan is an actress and the producer of "Nirbhaya" ('Fearless'), the critically-acclaimed play written and directed by Yael Farber. Based on real-life events, the play breaks the silence around sexual violence and was called by The Telegraph as one of the "most powerful pieces of theater you'll ever see.” Jagannathan gained international recognition for her portrayal of a journalist in the 2011 Bollywood film "Delhi Belly" and has appeared as series regular on HBO's "The Night Of" and Netflix's "Gypsy." In 2018 she was a member of the ensemble cast of HBO's "Room 104," created by the Duplass brothers. Most recently, Jagannathan plays Nalini Vishwakumar in Mindy Kaling's comedy series "Never Have I Ever." He often plays a character, like in PAPER MARRIAGE (2024) and SANTA CLAUS (2017), that is reserved and unsure of himself, and the stories, at least partially, revolve around how he -- and the outside world -- reacts to those personality traits. During our conversation, he talks about how he grapples with these questions in his own life and utilizes his art to get to a greater truth. And yet.In many of his short films and his debut feature, PAPER MARRIAGE, he writes, directs, and acts in a lead role. He is an extraordinarily talented, supremely unique filmmaker, which I'd argue makes for a great podcast guest. I think you'll agree. In this episode, we talk about:how he got started in filmmaking and the story behind his debut feature, PAPER MARRIAGE -- he originally thought he'd be a film critic;why he wrote, directed, and starred in his first feature -- the Duplass brothers forced him to do it! I had the opportunity to go LIVE on the RED CARPET at Tribeca for three movies. The first was interview the Duplass family for their film "Oh, Christmas Tree." This 11 minute short film was shot in their cabin in upstate NY. It truly was a family affair, written by Mark Duplass to star in with his daughter Ora Duplass, and directed by Katie Aselton, Mark's wife and Ora's mom. I asked them a couple of questions about shooting this short film and working together. It was Ora's first time in a film, so I asked her about her preparation for this role and whether it felt performative to ask with her Dad. I also asked about advice for filmmakers. I truly found this particular short very inspiring. They shot this as a family, with only one extra person to record sound. I was able to tie in a fun question at the end! Synopsis: It's been a bit of a year for 16 year-old Claire and her father Ben. All they really want to do is put it behind them. But Christmas is here and their silly holiday traditions are staring them dead in the face, practically taunting these two to give them a try after all they've been through. This short film by the Duplass family is as much an examination of mental health as it is an attempt to explore the emotional minefield of ever-shifting family dynamics. Mark Duplass - Mark is a filmmaker, actor, writer and musician. His credits include Bombshell, Safety Not Guaranteed, Tammy, The Mindy Project, and Charlie "Chip" Black on The Morning Show. To call Piper Laurie an underrated genre icon would not be entirely correct. She was an award winning actress who grabbed the spotlight in pretty much everything she was in. It is not until looking at her entire career that her contributions can be truly appreciated. We also revisit the idea of a Halloween television show and talk about the future of the V/H/S franchise.True crime stories have real life horror naturally built into them. The Man in the White Van decides to lean into horror tropes and gives an almost slasher feel. It is a good idea in theory, but the execution makes for one of the worst things we have seen this year. From confusing editing to an ending that fails to work on any level, we go over everything it did wrong while trying to find something good about it.At the other end of the spectrum is Last Stop Larrimah. For obvious reasons, there are not a lot of lighthearted true crime documentaries. This HBO documentary looks at the mysterious disappearance of a man living in the Australian outback. He lives in a small town of eleven people, and everyone is a suspect. The film is able to mix humorous moments into its dark story without ever taking away from the gravity of the case. It is a bit of fresh storytelling that injects life into the genre. The already interesting case is made even more engaging thanks to the way in which everything unfolds. It is easily one of the better things we have seen this year.Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Marking the directorial debut of long-time Duplass brothers' collaborator, Mel Eslyn, BIOSPHERE drops us into the confined lives of Billy (Mark Duplass) and Ray (Sterling K. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed a domed structure with all the systems necessary to sustain life on a planet that could no longer support it. Their custom biosphere is outfitted with basic necessities and creature comforts that make it possible to retain a sense of what life used to be like. A hydroponic garden provides fresh vegetables and a carefully managed fishpond supplies essential protein. Recently, however, fish have begun dying at an alarming rate. Mark Duplass is the living patron saint of the indie filmmaker. Honest, simple, modest, positive, affirming about the work, Duplass, first with his brother Jay and now on his own, has become a household name in the film world for producing projects in a DIY style foregrounding authenticity, improvisational humor, and human connection. As an actor, both in his own productions and also series like “The Morning Show,” he finds a way to keep that homegrown genuineness alive in front of the camera. His latest film, “Biosphere,” which he co-wrote with director Mel Eslyn, is a true two-hander (with the wonderful Sterling K. Brown) that never fails to surprise and is sure to be a summer crowdpleaser when it opens on July 7th. On this episode, he talks about how his approach to acting grew out of necessity as a filmmaker, what he loved about being directed by his trusted partner Eslyn, why he himself hasn't directed for over eight years, what he needed to adjust when working in more precision-oriented productions, why he's cautiously optimistic about the AI effect on acting, and much more! Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from  Filmmaker Magazine. Jay Duplass: Breaking Into ‘Industry'

Jay Duplass never wanted to be an actor. For years, he remained entirely behind the scenes of the intimate indie films he wrote and directed with younger brother Mark Duplass. Then, he was handed the role of Josh Pfefferman in ‘Transparent,' which transformed his life and career more than he ever could have imagined when he still thought it was a little “web show” for Amazon. In this episode, Duplass reveals how his latest acting gig as “Mr. COVID” Jesse Bloom on HBO's ‘Industry' was inspired by Jeff Bezos, opens up about the difficult decision to separate from his brother professionally, explains why it would be “unthinkable” for a cis actor to play Jeffrey Tambor's role on ‘Transparent' today—even if that's what viewers “needed” at the time—and a lot more.
