On today's episode, I chat with Scarlet Hiltibidal. Scarlet is a daughter, wife, mother, and author of the books, “He Numbered the Pores on My Face,” and “Afraid of All the Things: Tornadoes, Cancer, Adoption, and Other Stuff You Need the Gospel For”—the latter of which is the main topic of today’s conversation. "Afraid of All the Things" was one of my favorite books of 2019 and the most honest and helpful book I’ve read on the subject of fear and the gospel. Now sit back, relax, and enjoy! Amy and Mike interview Scarlet Hiltibidal about her book for tweens/teens: He Numbered the Pores on My Face. When Scarlet Hiltibidal was a teenager, plastic butterfly clips were all the rage. She couldn’t understand why they didn’t look the same in her “frizzy, bulbous hair” as they did on the blonde whose mom was a professional hair stylist. Back then, she would have sanctioned the destruction of scores of actual butterflies just to own the label "pretty butterfly clips girl." And so it goes for many girls like Scarlet who strive for self-worth yet struggle to find it.  He Numbered the Pores on My Face is for teens who long for beauty, love, and rest. Any labels you long for today might as well be “looks good in butterfly clips” if you are not rooted in who Jesus says you are, because any self-centered identity is going to leave you in the same place: unfulfilled and unhappy. Girls will relate to Scarlet’s stories as she discusses hottie lists, eating disorders, and haphazard beauty in a way that is both humorous and thought provoking. Through it all, she describes how she found peace by learning to see life not through a mirror but through a Savior who shapes who we were, who we are, and who we will be.  See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Not only is Scarlet funny, but she is the mama to three beautiful girls and is married to a man who has always dreamed of being a farmer. Scarlet is the author of two recent books: Afraid of All The Things and He Numbered the Pores on my Face. Oh yeah, and she also writes a column for Family Life Magazine and Lifeway. She is an excellent communicator and enjoys speaking to women across the country about the freedom and rest you can find in Christ Jesus. Best part? She is the very first person to introduce me to sinkholes and firenados. Scarlet is the real deal. We talk about adopting her daughter with special needs, truly needing community and fighting to stay in God's Word. I can't wait for you to get to know her. Enjoy hearing from my new friend, Scarlet!

Scarlet Hiltibidal wrote "Afraid of All the Things." But many years before - as a first-grader - Scarlet read "Madeline" and became overwhelmingly afraid that she was having appendicitis.  When she wrote "Afraid of All the Things," Scarlet began to unpack her life experiences and realized the many ways fear almost overcame her completely - through many cross-country moves, meeting and becoming engaged to her husband, cancer, tornadoes, sinkholes, adoption, and one big thing Scarlet and I have in common: ectopic pregnancy. When Scarlet met her husband, Brandon, and they started dating, Scarlet says she "traded [her] fear of not being good enough for fear of not being pretty enough" and she managed to get engaged and married without Brandon knowing she was anorexic-bulimic. Finally, though, Scarlet realized she was going to die one day when she was drinking a double shot of espresso so she wouldn't pass out. It became clear to her that God kept putting His word in her face (specifically Proverbs 28:13, Jeremiah 17). Scarlet says the day she confessed her anorexia-bulimia to her husband, was the day she was healed.  Some other topics we chatted about: How the Lord speaks to her Her thoughts in what she thought were her dying moments during an ectopic pregnancy, and how that experience with the ectopic pregnancy changed her life and her faith Her fears around adoption, and how God put people in her life to get her past those fears Scarlet's current "ammunition" against fear We also chatted about her daughter's "Jesus Cheese" and how her entire family learned sign language when they adopted Joy. I'm thrilled that Scarlet is releasing another book in July 2019: "He Numbered the Pores on My Face", which is focused toward teenage girls and is all about finding your identity in Christ.  Scarlet and her three daughters and husband Brandon are the reason the internet is still a happy place so go follow her over on Instagram at @scarlethiltibal and be sure to read her books! On today's episode I had the absolute pleasure to interview and talk to Scarlet Hiltibidal. Scarlet is the author of Afraid of All the Things and He Numbered the Pores on My Face. She also writes a regular column for ParentLife Magazine and enjoys speaking to women around the country about the freedom and rest available in Jesus. Scarlet lives in Middle Tennessee, where she loves sign language with her daughters, nachos by herself, writing for her friends, and learning how to raise ducks with her husband for no reason other than cuteness. Scarlet is so relatable and I know you will love our chat. We found out we're both from the south FL area so it was fun to make that connection. Don't forget to listen to the end because I will be giving instructions for how to enter for the chance to win a copy of “Afraid of all the Things”! Enjoy my conversation with Scarlet!

My guest for The Happy Hour # 234 is Scarlet Hiltibidal. Scarlet is a wife, mother, and author of Afraid of All the Things and He Numbered the Pores on My Face. She also writes a regular column for ParentLife Magazine. Scarlet loves sign language with her daughters, nachos by herself, writing for her friends, and learning how to be a pretend-farmer with her husband in Middle Tennessee. Scarlet and I start off the show talking about anxiety. We discuss how it can sometimes be glossed over, how some don't even realize they struggle with it, and how anxiety can be absolutely debilitating. You'll hear Scarlet share how she realized she was afraid of all the things which led to an eating disorder, declining health, secrets, and living a life she was praying God would heal. Scarlet's story of how God called her to bring her secret into the light gives such encouragement to anyone feeling shame or hiding something you think could never be told. Scarlet then tells us how she began to truly rest in Jesus and realize that instead of focusing on all the things, she needed to look up, at God. Scarlet says, "if we are looking at Him, we see life, and hope and love." In the last part of the show, Scarlet shares with us the story of the adoption of her daughter Joy. You guys, adoption was one of the things Scarlet had always been afraid of, and you're going to love hearing her speak of the incredible things God did through their adoption journey.
